President’s Perspective
Worship Service Schedule
I am honored to be writing to you as
the new President of Congregation Beth
Emeth. Let me begin by offering a special
thank you to our outgoing president, Garry
Sanders, who has left his distinctive mark
during twelve years of dedicated lay
leadership.
In assuming the presidency I follow in
the footsteps of a long line of men and
women whose efforts have enriched and
sustained our congregation. Their hard work
has had a very personal impact on my
family. It enabled our sons to become b’nai mitzvah and
confirmands here. It has provided a nurturing community in
time of illness and following the deaths of our parents. It has
created an environment in which some of our closest friendships have been forged. As a result, I feel strongly that it is my
privilege to work with you for the betterment of Beth Emeth.
The next two years will undoubtedly be filled with
challenges and opportunities for us as a community. As we
honor our rich history with the celebration of our 175th anniversary, we will also be looking to our future. We will make a
meaningful effort to reach out to all of you to learn what you
think we are doing well and what we can improve upon. As we
move forward, I am excited about having the opportunity to
collaborate with you, our loyal congregants, our hard working
officers and board members and our dedicated clergy and staff
to sustain and strengthen our congregational community.
I wish you all a healthy and a happy summer!
Shalom,
Jill Goodman, president

Outreach Committee
Tikkun Olam: Healing the World
What is an interfaith family? At Beth Emeth there are
multitudes of family dynamics that define an interfaith family. It
may be a couple, each raised in a different religion. It may be
parents of an interfaith couple. It may be adult children who
grew up with the influence of more than one religion. Or, it may
be grandparents of children being raised in an interfaith home.
Perhaps you have another example?
The Interfaith Outreach Committee is forming an
Advisory Council. Unlike a traditional committee, this group
will have all of their discussions online. The purpose will be to
offer advice, suggestions for programming, feedback and other
information, all intended to help meet the needs and enhance
the experience of interfaith families at Beth Emeth.
If you are interested in knowing more about this new
endeavor, or if you would like to be included in the Advisory
Council, please contact outreach@bethemethalbany.org. We
look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks to Cheryl Gelder-Kogan for chairing the committee
and helping me to a running start as the new Committee Chair.
I am so proud to join the ranks of Cheryl, Barbara Zaron and
Arlene Stein who are the three previous chairs who made my
membership on this committee such a special experience. I am
proud to chair this committee which spearheads our congregation’s efforts in Tikkun Olam, Healing the World.
The committee is always looking for new members who
want to get involved in helping determine our Social Action/
Justice agenda. We always need volunteers for the Sunday
Soup Kitchen. Watch for the grand opening of our on-line registration for working the Soup Kitchen. Please continue or start to
bring non-perishable food items for the Focus Food Pantry. We
are also still collecting school supplies. Check the web-site for
updates on the Garden we hope to be launching soon.
I also want to express a very warm and special thank you
to Ron Miller for his exceptional service to the operation of the
Soup Kitchen for many, many years. Beth and I personally
benefitted from his support and guidance when we became and
served as crew chiefs. I also want to recognize the work of
Roberta Fox (487-4754/ rffoxylady@verizon.net) in procuring
and scheduling volunteers to staff the soup kitchen. Kudos also
to Lucy Siegel who has organized the Tzedakah collection at
Friday night services for years. I urge you to be generous as
you can be in your contributions. The money collected is
essential if we are to continue making a difference.
As we begin to focus on celebrating the 175th anniversary
of Beth Emeth, please let me know of any stories you might
know of congregational members who may have been active in
the major social movements in the last 175 years such as Underground Rail Road, Abolitionist movement, Women’s Suffrage, Civil Rights, Labor, etc. If you have any questions, concerns or want to get involved please contact me.

Shabbat & Holiday Toolbox
Religious School is over for this year; most weekday
programming at Temple has also come to a close for the
summer. Some ideas to stay “Jewishly” connected:
* Check out 5:30 p.m. Friday Erev Shabbat Services
or a Torah Study at 9:30 a.m. on Saturdays
* Can’t get to services? Watch them live on your
computer. Go to our website: www.bethemethalbany.org
and click on the “worship” button. We stream our services live or you can watch at a time of your choosing as
our services are also archived
* Join us for the various “Beth Emeth CommunityBuilding” activities that are going on this summer: Park
Playhouse; Valley Cats Day; Day at the Races; Glimmerglass Opera; Mah Jongg; Knit & Nosh; Chapter One
Book Club
* Summertime offers us more family reading time.
For family’s with children age 6 months-6 years, sign up
for PJ Library – you’ll receive free Jewish-themed books.
Go to www.jewishfedny.org and type in “PJ Library”
* For more adult Jewish reading/learning – check out
this web-site – www.kveller.com - from the creators of
MyJewishLearning.com (another wonderful web site).
This site is packed with information geared to today’s
families, whether intermarried, gay or with two working
parents. Topics from a baby-name finder, to grand parenting articles, to how to talk about the Holocaust.
* Volunteer as a family at the Beth Emeth Soup
Kitchen. Registration information is on our web site.
* Make challah together as a family and have a
picnic Shabbat dinner!!
Whatever way you share in our traditions – wishing
you all a wonderful summer!

Reyut: Our Caring Community
A group of Reyut volunteers have begun regularly visiting
our Beth Emeth members who reside at Daughters of Sarah.
It's a wonderful way for our resident members to learn about
what's going on at Beth Emeth as well as a chance to reminisce and, most of all, to know that they are remembered and
cared about.
Reyut volunteers have also been busy preparing and delivering mitzvah meals for those who are home from the hospital
as well as brand-new parents, and other committee members
have been delivering bereavement baskets and offering
comfort to those who have suffered losses.
Serving on the Reyut Caring Committee is ideal for those
who would like to help our Beth Emeth family in some way but
whose time is limited. Your participation is welcome. If you are
interested, please contact Marlene Pressman at
mpressman@nycap.rr.com.

Thank you Beth Emeth Volunteers!!
Thanks to our Garage Sale Volunteers
Thanks to our Health Fair Volunteers
Our annual Giant Garage Sale held on June 9th-12th
broke all kinds of records. Hundreds of car loads of
terrific merchandise, donated by our congregants, was
sorted and organized by dozens of volunteers who
labored for a full week preparing for the sale. More than
85 volunteers worked tirelessly over the three sale days
assisting customers and selling off the inventory. Also,
this year we had twenty new volunteers who had not previously participated in the sale.
We broke our record for the number of customers on
opening night – we had 228 customers on Saturday and
record crowds on Sunday as well. Special thanks to
David Galletly, our publicity chair, for his efforts in this
area.
The Garage Sale is a fundraiser which helps Beth
Emeth provide a broad spectrum of programs and activities for its members, while at the same time providing a
service to the larger community by offering quality
merchandise at a very reasonable price. Many of our
returning customers consider our sale to be the “BEST IN
THE CAPITAL REGION”. One of our customers was
overheard saying, “they have more stuff here than
Walmart!”
The Garage Sale is part of Beth Emeth’s Social
Action programming. At the conclusion of the sale, unsold
merchandise was donated to community based non-profit
agencies to assist them in serving their clients. Our goal
is to sell or donate everything and to throw away nothing.
We acknowledge the generous support of ShopRite
and Armory Garage whose donations were most valuable
in adding to the success of the sale. Thanks to our
CBEYG volunteers who assisted with a variety of duties.
Thank you to the wonderful Garage Sale Committee—cochairs Margie and Rob Dorkin, Janis Campo, Janis
Englestein, David Galletly, Karen Gerstenzang, Wendy
Keyser, Julie Levin, Jill Peterson, Arleen Stein, Gary
Weitzman, and Barbara Zaron ---and to all the volunteers. Thanks to Joan Paley, Gail Kendall, Steve, and
Punky for the many things they did so that things ran
smoothly. We couldn’t do it without you all!!
Thank you to all who volunteered at the April 29th
Beth Emeth - Albany JCC Health & Services Fair for
Adults.
With your help, this event ran smoothly,
hundreds of people received free health screenings and
information about area resources. In addition, it was a
successful fundraiser for CBE and the AJCC.
Our heartfelt appreciation,
Claire Sigal and Sally Greenblatt, Fair Coordinators
Mitzvah Heroes
Here are this month’s Mitzvah Heroes! Remember,
if there is someone (youth or adult) who you feel should
be acknowledged for a mitzvah, let me know and I will
list them in this column. E-mail or call Debbie Sokoler
(432-1392 or dsokoler@bethemethalbany.org). It’s that
simple!
Emma Farman’s Mitzvah Project is called “Smile ~
Pass It On!” Emma is going to give out pictures of smiles
to encourage others to smile and pass it on!! Her goal is
to give out 1,000 smiles!
Kate Farman is the manager of an A Capella group,
“Bethacapella.” She and three other girls meet weekly to
rehearse and they then perform at Nursing Homes and
at local events such as the Down Syndrome Annual
Buddy Walk.
Kyle Katlan is involved with an organization, “Pitch
In For Baseball.” Kyle is collecting new and gently used
baseball equipment as well as money he has earned that
will be donated to kids in struggling communities.
Oliver Miller is volunteering at the Beth Emeth Soup
Kitchen. He plans to do this on a regular basis as he is
interested in helping feed those less fortunate than himself.
Thank you Ron Miller for all you do for the Soup Kitchen!
Thank You!
Hearfelt thanks to Jan ReissWeitzman for once again this
year providing the beautiful
flower plantings at the
Temple entrance.

If You Would Like a Clergy Hospital Visit
The Clergy of Beth Emeth take great pride in making
themselves available to the members of our congregation at the
time of their pastoral needs.
However, in recent years the realities of hospital visitations
have changed dramatically. First, because of the HIPPA Laws,
the Temple is only notified of the hospitalization of a member IF
the hospital is specifically instructed to do so OR if a family
member chooses to inform us. Secondly, the typical length of a
hospital stay has decreased significantly and many procedures
require a minimal stay if any.
In addition, we understand and fully respect the privacy of
our members in that many individuals do not want or require a
pastoral visit while hospitalized and, in fact, an unscheduled visit
might well interrupt their recuperation, rehabilitation schedule or
testing procedure.
In light of this, please be reminded that if you are hospitalized and would, indeed, welcome the visit of a member of our
Clergy or are in need of pastoral attention, PLEASE either have
the hospital chaplain or nurse be in touch with us (as they can
easily do) OR have a relative or friend let us know. The Clergy
are not routinely in the hospitals and ONLY make calls upon
request because of the aforementioned reasons and out of
respect for your privacy.
