Leviticus 5:15 “If a person wrongfully deviates and unwittingly sins [by using the] sacred
property of Adonai, he shall bring his guilt-offering to Adonai, an unblemished ram, from the
sheep, based on the valuation of holy silver shekalim, for a guilt-offering.”
What does it mean to take something from God’s property? Rashbam suggests that this
implies stealing from the Temple treasury, while Rashi thinks it means taking anything sacred
for personal beneficial use. Regardless, taking that which is holy and using it for base
personal advancement is prohibited. How do we do the opposite, that is, using that which is
holy to better ourselves specifically because it is connected to God? We do things like
lighting the Shabbat candles, shaking the lulav, eating matzah during the Seder, all as
expressions of cleaving to God, and we better ourselves by doing so (spiritually, mentally and
emotionally). However, if we do these acts only for base personal gain, we are no greater than
the object itself, and have significantly reduced the holiness—both of the object and of our
present state of being. -AO

Michael Davis
March 16, 12:15 p.m.
Learning Center
As American Jews, often we
focus on Israel advocacy or on
questions of Israel's security.
But internal issues within Israeli
society are not less important
or volatile. Israelis response to the plight of
African asylum seekers is one such issue. With
first hand knowledge of the situation, Michael
will explore and expose us to this issue. Michael is the founder and managing attorney
of Davis and Goldfarb Immigration Lawyers.
Mussar Circle with Miriam Chaya Charney
April 4 through May 9,
Thursdays at 6:15 p.m.
Six weeks from Pesah to
Shavu'ot. $90.00 per
participant. Financial aid
available upon request
Would You Like to Join a
Mussar Circle? Would you
like to become closer to God in your day to
day life? Would you like to become more
patient, more generous, more compassionate?
“Mussar” work gives you that opportunity.
Mussar is working on our character traits, such
as humility, patience, generosity, compassion,
etc. Mussar work has the same goals as
Kabbalah, just a more practical and down-toearth approach. Miriam Chaya Charney,
Spiritual Director, has an undergraduate
degree from Harvard College and a law
degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
Miriam worked as a Wall Street Lawyer
before realizing her path lay elsewhere, and
she began to teach. Miriam has been trained
in the art of Spiritual Direction through the Lev
Shomea program. Please contact Raquel
Swanson at 952-873-7315 or
rswanson@bethelsynagogue.org to register.
