AT HOME WITH THE WORD

Taking up the cross
The Paschal Mystery
Revelation is an amazing thing. Begin to notice connections in our Sunday Bible readings; you will be amazed
at the incredible way the Holy Spirit inspired the holy
writers and editors who shaped the Bible. Some who study
the scriptures say our first reading from Zechariah is hard
to interpret. “Him whom they have pierced” – who
was the prophet referring to back then, after all, it was
centuries before the time of Jesus? How does this passage
fit with the rest of that prophet’s book? Fine questions, but
hear this passage in light of the paschal mystery. “They
shall look on him whom they have pierced, and they shall
mourn for him as one mourns for an only son,…. On that
day there shall be open …, a fountain to purify from sin
and uncleanness.” Through the inspiration of the Holy
Spirit, Zechariah may have penned a message that had
much more meaning than even he could see. Namely, one
day, this passage would shed light on the paschal mystery.
Is it hard to see why those who put together our lectionary
(the book that organizes all the Bible readings for Mass)
chose this reading to go with the Passion prediction in
today’s Gospel? The last sentence about the fountain can
serve well for prayer in this Year of Mercy.
Messiah Jesus might be, about his identity and his
mission. Of the many possibilities, a Messiah, a Son of
God who empties himself, and dies that others might have
forgiveness and life was not so much on the radar screen.
Even though Jesus predicted his passion, as we hear in the
Gospel today, it didn’t really sink in for the disciples until
after his death, resurrection, and the sending of the Holy
Spirit. There are still many misconceptions in the world
today, and some may have seeped into our thinking. Who
do you say that Jesus is? Does your understanding fit
well with what Jesus tells the disciples in today’s Gospel?
Look up at the crucifix, quietly soak in what you see, and
ask the Lord to help you answer this vital question well.

Clothed in Christ
Even if your Bible reading hasn’t led you to read Paul’s
letter to the Galatians, being clothed in Christ should be
fairly familiar. Many of the prayers we pray and images
we use in the sacraments come right out of the Bible. At
every baptism, we pray an excerpt of Paul’s letter to the
Galatians: “You have become a new creation, and clothed
yourself in Christ.” If you brought a friend to church,
there was a baptism at Mass, and afterward they asked
you “What does it mean to clothe yourself in Christ. Have
you done that?” How would you respond? Give it some
thought and prayer!

It is a brief question, but cuts to the heart of the matter.

week's tithing will help father get a much needed car for his ministry.

Thanks for your e-mail and for the great stories about Mautuma children
that you shared with the students of St. Louis in Pittsford. I'm equally
glad that this was received with a lot of enthusiasm. Good job!
Now about my aging car information: I bought this car in 2005, meaning that it is now 11 years old. It has put on a mileage of over 445,000
Kilometers- (278,125 miles); To be safe, I have established that I will
require about $8000 (US money) to cover for recently increased value
added taxes on cars by the government to meet its deficit in the budget.
Benefits of having a car: Pastoral reasons, a car is essential in reaching out to thousands of parishioners whom I serve. The parish is divided
into 8 mission or sub-parish churches. This is due to the huge population
that cannot fit in the main parish church and also because of distance;
many parishioners stay far from the main church. Majority walk on foot
up to 5 miles to come for Mass. That is why we have the mission
churches for a priest to drive there to serve the parishioners, especially
the children and aged and physically challenged. Each out station or
sub-Parish has an average of 200 families.
I also use the car to take sacraments - Communion for the sick, Anointing of the sick to the needy parishioners in their homes which are far
from the Parish House. Sometimes I have had to carry some of these
sick to the Mission Hospital for treatment. We take Funeral Masses to
the homes of the deceased because many people cannot afford vehicles
to transport their loved ones remains to church. I need a car to reach
these homes. In a week we have an average of 4 funerals because of the
huge population and also due to HIV/AIDS epidemic. School Masses
and visits: I take Masses and religious instruction to the schools within
the parish - over 25 schools and a few colleges. Finally as Communication Director I have to drive once in a week to the Diocesan offices and
whenever I am required. Sometimes I have to drive outside the Diocese
for Communication seminars and workshops at national level and meetings with government officials. I also drive to St. Louis School (Sister
School) in Mautuma to participate in some of their programs as I watch
over their progress and needs, etc. Our roads are not good - majority
are dirt roads with pot holes, gullies and pools of water especially during
the rainy season. The terrain is not friendly to cars and this really wears
down cars easily and adds on heavy expenditure on maintenance. By the
way, at the moment my car is off the road. It veered off the road into a
ditch during a heavy down pour on a dirt road and the result was broken
windshield and passenger's door.
Thanks again for the extra mile you go in participating in creating an
enabling environment for me to better serve the people here, especially
the children here in Kenya. I pray that the mission to enable me have a
newer means of transport to reach more people that require my services
