It is achievements and country pride such as
this that attributed to Mr Wharton’s accolade
of being named the 2012 Scone and Upper
Hunter Horse Festival VIP.
Humbled and honoured to accept the role,
Mr Wharton and his dear wife Dorothy have
already begun their busy festival schedule
attending the King of the Ranges Stockman’s
Challenge last weekend.
Born and bred in the Upper Hunter, Mr
Wharton’s family have run their cattle property
near Gundy since 1854 where he worked for
many decades before handing the role onto
his son John.
Starting out in sporting events, Mr Wharton
has always competed on the horse, enjoying
a fruitful career in campdrafting.
But he wasn’t just a horseman, the 79-yearold also tried his hand at bullock riding in his
younger days.
With his stock whip in hand and dogs at his
horse’s heels, Mr Wharton did a lot of stock
work and droving, where he broke and rode
horses for himself and others.
Over the years, he has been involved in many
different capdraft and rodeo committees

including Gundy and Scone, as well as the
P&C, church affairs and other community
groups.
Mr Wharton was one of the key players
in establishing the Roughriders and
Campdrafters of Yesterday and Today
memorial plaque in Scone and he is now the
joint president.
Mr Wharton said he was very excited and
honoured to take on the role of VIP and was
looking forward to the next few weeks of
events.
“I hope to get to as many events as possible
as I always really enjoy the festival,” he said.
“I feel very privileged to attend these events
as this year’s VIP.”

String Quartet Performs
L to R: Jennifer Kershaw, Katrina Constable, Tammi Low and Gillian Miles.
The Upper Hunter Conservatorium of Music is proud to offer the local community an opportunity to experience
the exceptional talents of its own Strings department when the UHCM String Quartet performs at a once only
concert at the Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre on Friday 11 May.
The UHCM String Quartet features three of the Conservatorium’s dedicated teaching staff – Jennifer Kershaw, Katrina Constable and Gillian
Miles – and special guest Tammi Low from Newcastle. They are all accomplished musicians and performers in their own right, and will delight
the audience with their performances of a variety of string arrangements in the magnificent acoustics of the Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre.
Director for the UHCM, Adam Wills, said, “the concert will be a special opportunity for the local community to see some first-class music
performed by our gifted staff”.
The concert follows an educational tour by the String Quartet to local primary schools, involving a concert and discussion at each school to
introduce local students to string instruments and engage their interest in music generally.
The String Quartet concert and tour has been funded by Arts NSW as part of the UHCM’s 2012 Visiting Artists Series for the benefit of local
music lovers. The performance will commence at 7:30pm at the Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre on Friday 11 May. Tickets are available
through the Conservatorium or at the door. Please phone 6541 4888 for more information or to book your tickets.

Alan Young Campdrafting Clinic
Do you have a dream of campdrafting or
simply need some guidance in educating
your horse?
Then Alan Young has the answer for you.
With more than 40 years experience riding, breaking
and training horses for all disciplines, Alan’s calmness
combined with his knowledge and outstanding ability on
horseback make him an excellent choice of instructor in
the Upper Hunter.
Being the winner of numerous campdrafts, including
a number of open titiles at the Australian Bushmen’s
Campdraft and Rodeo National Finals in consecutive years,
Alan and his horses including his stallion Acres Liberty
Beau are a great example of the sport of campdrafting.
But this is not all he has to offer, based near Aberdeen,
Alan operates a training institution and later this month he
will offer his time and expertise at a three day campdrafting
and horsemanship clinic at Tinagroo.

The clinic is ideal for people who know how to ride but are looking to
take the next step or advance their skills, and it will also be ideal for
anyone who may be having difficulties with their horse.
Alan said he would be more than happy to help people with their
horses, no matter what sport they compete in or what level of riding
they are up to.
“My clinics will suit any rider as I adapt my teaching to suit the
individual horse and rider’s needs,” he said.
“I love to ride and compete and I just want to share that passion with
others.”
The campdraft and horsemanship clinic will be held on May 26 and

Scone to Host Professional Bull Riders Pro Tour
Saturday 12 October, 2012 has
been announced as the date for the
inaugural Pro Series Professional
Bull Riding (PBR) event at White
Park Rodeo Complex.
PBR Australia bull riding events are held
across Australia throughout the yet. The
Scone event will be run as a Touring Pro
Series event with points accumulated to count
towards the major Cup and international
events.
It is anticipated that the event will run on the
same weekend each year.
PBR will run the actual bull riding event whilst
Council will coordinate and manage all other
aspects of the event including sponsorship,
event ticketing, security, ambulance, lighting,
marketing, running of bars and food stalls.
The inaugural Scone event will bring a
huge night of extreme action with superstar
match ups between the best bulls and
most accomplished bull riders from around
Australia.
PBR events are not your average type
of competition, the whole event is
choreographed to deliver great bull riding,
which culminates into a final championship
round where the top 10 scorers in the event
go ahead to head with the 10 toughest bulls in
pen. To win this level of competition one needs
to not only make the whistle consistently but
hope that he has drawn the best bull in the
competition that can deliver him the highest
score possible as they are competing
against other riders of equal ability. Points
and money that each competitor wins on the
PBR Touring Pro Series counts towards the
multi-million dollar World Finals in Las Vegas
each year. The Australian Champion receives
an automatic wild card entry.
Council has underwritten $200,000 towards
the cost of redevelopment of the White Park
Rodeo Complex to facilitate events of this
type at White Park. Community and service
groups as well as sporting associations will
have an opportunity to express their interest
in being involved in the event as fund raising
activities.
“This is exciting news for Scone,” says UHSC
Mayor Lee Watts. “Scone is set to witness
some edge of its seat sporting entertainment
which I imagine will be of great appeal to a
large number of people both locally and from
outside the Shire. We are delighted that the
PBR Associations has chosen to include
Scone on their annual Pro Circuit.”
Racing NSW Thoroughbred Retraining Program
Racing NSW’s Thoroughbred Retraining Program is an innovative not-for-profit program dedicated to finding
new homes and careers for retired racehorses.
Horses retired from racing are sourced by Racing NSW and first sent to St Heliers facility where they spell for approximately 6 months before
their re education. The first 6 weeks is carried out at the prison by inmates under the watchful eye of experienced horsehandler/warders. Once
spelled the horses move to Sydney where they are schooled in preliminary/novice dressage and are given an introduction to jumping. From
here the horses are put up for sale.
Former Mounted Police horse trainer, Scott Brodie, will be presenting a demonstration of some these horses on Thursday 17th May at White
Park in Scone. Scott uses natural horsemanship techniques and the practical application of classical dressage to produce quality performance
horses with a foundation to set them up for a future in any discipline. For more information contact scott.brodie@optusnet.com.au

The NSW Minerals Council has launched a new website to
outline the facts about mining in NSW and to dispel any being
perpetuated about the minerals sector.
“We’re launching www.landcarefacts.com.au in response to
misinformation that is out there about mining and the State’s
land use,” NSW Minerals Council CEO Stephen Galilee said.
“Actual mining operations accounts for just 0.1% of NSW land,
compared to 76% for agriculture, 3.7% for forestry and 1.8% for
urban and rural residential. Mining does not and cannot happen
in the State’s National Parks, which account for 7.6% of State
land.”
