response to his message for his mission appeal Special
Missionary Cooperative envelopes which were in last

BAPTISM PREPARATION CLASS THIS SUNDAY
Attention New or Expecting Parents: Deacon Tom will hold
the next Baptism Preparation Class THIS Sunday, September
4th from 11:30—12:30 AM in the rectory basement. This
class is for all parents wanting to have their child baptized either
here at St. John’s or at St. Kateri Parish.
If you can’t attend this Baptism Preparation Class, the next one
will be held on Sunday, December 4th. For any questions,
contact Deacon Tom Boldin at stboldin@verizon.net or 3554234. To schedule a Baptism, call the rectory at 355-3134.
SCHEDULING MASS INTENTIONS
We are now getting caught up with having all of our “hanging”
Mass intentions offered. These intentions were some that were
back-logged because of the volume received in the past. We
did NOT send any intentions away to be said. If you have not
seen yours offered yet, it/they are still on the roster and will be
scheduled soon. However, we also have ample openings now
for new intentions, so we encourage you to call in and again
schedule Masses to be said for your deceased loved ones. We
are also scheduling intentions for our 2017 Masses.
“HEALING FROM GRIEF” GROUP MEETING”
Our next “Healing Through Faith” Group meeting is scheduled
for next Tuesday, September 13th. It will be held at 9:00 AM in
the rectory basement meeting room . Everyone is welcome to
attend and share in the discussions with Fr. George.
JARED BOX ITEMS NEEDED
A few weeks ago we published a “Thank You” from both the
Foundation for Mount Nittany Medical Center and The Jared
Box Project. Students from our Kindergarten, First and Sixth
grades CCD Classes had assembled Jared Boxes earlier this
year from items they and you, our parishioners had donated.
The Mount Nittany Children’s Advocacy Group of Bellefonte has
again notified us of a desperate need for these Jared Boxes.
We have a bin in the back of the church to collect the items that
are needed. The suggested items are as follows: crayons/
markers, coloring books, small toys, bubbles, pens/pencils,
small notepads/journals, small puzzles, card games and travel
size board games. All items should be able to fit in a shoebox.
Please do not give any dolls or food items. As a reminder,
these boxes are given to the young patients in the Surgical,
Emergency, Pediatric and Children’s Inpatient Units of The
Mount Nittany Medical Center. Your help with donating any of
the items requested is greatly appreciated.

ADULT AND FOLK CHOIRS SEEK NEW MEMBERS
The Adult and Folk Choirs are starting up once again this
fall. Both groups during the past 2 years have seen a substantial
drop in personnel for various reasons. So we are actively recruiting new members. The Adult Choir traditionally sings at
the 8:00 AM Mass and is run by Jay Zimmerman. The Folk
Group sings 2 or 3 times a month on a rotating Mass schedule
and is led by Tim Kasper.
If you enjoy singing, please consider becoming a part of the
music ministry and contact either Jay at 383-4385 or Tim at
355-2090. The Adult Choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings
and the Folk Group has their practices on Thursday evenings.

ICON PAINTING WORKSHOP
The Bethany Retreat Center in Frenchville (about 50 minutes
from State College) is offering an opportunity to learn about and
create an icon painted in the ancient Byzantine style. Mary Kay
Laplante will lead the class in creating an icon of the
Mother of God, ‘Tenderness,’ using ancient techniques and
all natural materials rich with symbolic meaning. This workshop is similar to the one she lead last year, with a different subject for the icon.
Previous artistic experience is not necessary, a s w r iting an icon is as much a contemplative form of prayer as an artistic discipline. Students will receive step-by-step instructions
and all necessary materials will be provided. The underlying
theology will be equally emphasized with each technical step
demonstrated.
The days will include class instruction and painting, personal
prayer time, optional Centering Prayer, daily Mass and home
cooked meals.
The workshop will be held from November 6th - 12th (Sunday
to Saturday). Ar r ival is after 4:00 PM on Su n day w ith
supper at 6:00 PM. Departure is on Saturday after 1:00 PM.
The offering for the class is $800 per person with a nonrefundable deposit of $250 required. This amount includes lodging
and meals for the week, class instruction and all icon materials.
These materials provided include: a prepared icon board, set of
brushes, palette, 23K gold leaf, pigments, and all other necessary
materials to complete the icon.
Partial scholarships are available.
Save $15 by bringing your own single sheets and towels.
Please indicate prior to your arrival if you have special dietary
needs.
To register, please call Bethany Retreat Center at 814 263-4855
or contact them via email at bethanyretreatcenter@gmail.com.
