In today’s first reading, Wisdom is imagined as a
woman rich in poise and grace. She moves smoothly and
confidently about her temple like home. She doesn’t flutter about, nervous with worry. Wisdom sends her maidens
to invite all to her open house. The guests do not possess
any particular genius or insight. They need only be a people of good will and common sense. They are summoned
to leave behind foolishness and to find for themselves a
place at Wisdom’s table. There they may and can eat and
drink deeply.
Today’s Gospel draws us back to the table of the Eucharist. Jesus addresses those who seek to understand his
words and, sadly, those who seek to avoid them. As people
born of God, we are called and equipped to seek God’s
will and act on it.

SACRED HEART RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS
Mrs. Arroyo and Fr. Corry are very grateful to the parishioners who recently bought raffle tickets. $170 was raised for the Catechetical Office of the Archdiocese.
The word catechetical is one of a group of words used in connection with religious education. A catechism (such as the Catechism of the Catholic Church promulgated by the Holy
See in 1992 and the Baltimore Catechism older parishioners will remember from their younger
days). A catechist is a teacher in a religious education program, one who uses a catechism (as
either a resource or a textbook). Catechesis is the process of teaching and learning in such a
program, and catechetics is the art and science of this process. Catechetical, therefore, is “of
or relating to” catechesis or catechetics.
Embedded in each of these five words is another word, which is the key to understanding them all. That word is echo. The Father sent the Son who sent the Apostles upon whom
then the Father and the Son sent the Holy Spirit. Throughout the twenty centuries of the
Church’s history the teaching of the Apostles (which they received from the Triune God) has
echoed from generation to generation!

WITH REVERENCE AND RESPECT AS WE CELEBRATE EUCHARIST
Dear Parish Family,
The celebration of the Holy Eucharist by the community is the primary worship that we
give to God each week. We need to approach the Holy Eucharist with an attitude of reverence
for God and respect for others. The heartfelt participation and positive friendly attitude of the
people of Sacred Heart parish is welcoming and inspiring. The people choose to sing and actively participate in the Holy Eucharist. We pray that the preaching is meaningful as well.
Our faith helps us find meaning in the Eucharist. We prepare ourselves for participation
in the Mass by fasting for an hour in advance of receiving the Holy Eucharist. We begin to prepare ourselves for Mass even at home when we are getting dressed, or perhaps slowing down
our activities to leave for Church. Daily prayer, even as a family, is important in making our
spiritual lives more fruitful.
What we are doing in celebrating the Holy Eucharist is of the highest importance. We
should reverence the altar by bowing when entering and leaving the pews. We should genuflect/bow to the tabernacle in honor of the Blessed Sacrament. We show reverence by our actions.
We should be cautious in how we choose to dress for Mass, even in the summer. We ask
that both men and women cover themselves in an appropriate manner. What “appropriate”
means! Shorts, tank tops, and very short skirts are seen as being too casual, and “strapless” and
“spaghetti strap” garments are not appropriate. We respectfully ask that an attitude of modesty
and reverence be shown by those attending the Holy Eucharist.
Some things cannot be helped, but other things are very much within our control. If a
child cries loudly, that cannot be helped, but there is a foyer/vestibule where Mass can be
heard. When we hear a telephone ring we know it could have been silenced in advance. We ask
that children be watched carefully and accompanied to the restroom by their parent or guardian. We can certainly refrain from chewing gum, or bringing food and drinks into the Church.
The use of toys or electronic devices during Mass is under our control. We allow the hurry of
life to limit our prayer and peace with God when we leave Mass before it ends. We can make
the Church a more prayerful place when we refrain from loud talking.
Thank you for your attention and thoughtfulness in these matters. God bless you.

Sharing is Caring
Catching her in the act, I asked my 3-year-old daughter, "Are you eating your little sister's
grapes?"
"No," she innocently replied, "I'm helping her share."
