November 2003 - Bay Area Snow Sports Council
Representing 35 Ski & Snowboard Clubs
November 2003
Word from the President:
Happy Thanksgiving early!!
November is when we hope for
early snow before the Thanksgiving Holiday. Let the
snow dance commence.
October has been a busy month. Lots of events to plan
and attend. The October BAC General meeting hosted
two guest speakers. Becky Moore of Squaw Valley, who
updated us on what’s going on at Squaw. Majority of their
village construction phases are complete. Underground
parking is plenty for those concerned about skiing at
Squaw. The new bridge also provides additional parking
for the day. New restaurants and shops are opening so
there is lots to do at the village after a day of skiing. They
have a new beginners area in the lower portion of the
mountain and they made improvements to the terrain
park for the snowboarders. They also increased the
number of VIP day lockers in the basement area of Gold
Coast. So lots to see at Squaw this year.
Our second guest was Rich Fullernbach who is an
independent ski tech. which is the best way to describe
him. He was nice enough to come in and talk about ski
equipment. In specific, Rossignol and Blizzard racing
skis’ for both men and women. He was very informative
and he got the crowd all excited about skiing and racing.
We are looking to have a BAC shopping night at a shop
he represents in Davis in conjunction with Sierra League.
More details to follow. If you are interested in having
Becky or Rich to come to your general meetings please
contact your BAC Reps or myself.

The time has come when BAC elects a new presidentelect for the 2004-05 year. Elections for President will be
held on Monday, January 12, 2004. We will take
nominations from the floor at the November and
December meetings. We will also take nominations on
January 12 before voting. The president-elect will get
trained for 3 months and take office during the May BAC
Board meeting. If anyone is interested in leading a great
group of people please contact me either at
Linda_yamaguchi2000@yahoo.com or call me at 650595-5008. Not only do you get to be President of BAC
and help direct BAC to the next level, you get to meet
new people from other councils and from the ski industry.
It is a job where you build lasting relationships.
Remember to look at the BAC Website www.skibac.org
for all-important information such as upcoming events,
like the Bota Bagger Party October 25th and the
Snowchaser/Parallelers Ski Club Halloween Party on Nov
1st. Singles League is hosting the annual Snow Ball on
November 8th.. Corporate Discount Lift ticket information
was sent to the BAC reps. Contact Paula Kinahon for
more details. There is space available for the Ski Weeks
at Telluride and Big White/Silver Star. Contact Steve
Grevstad at skiersteve@aol.com. Singles League will be
going to Sun Peaks in March. Contact Dennis Heffley at
skiheffley@aol.com. One last thing, get your rosters and
dues to Michelle Nightengale. You must be a club in good
standings to order Corporate Discount tickets and race.
Aloha,
Linda Yamaguchi

EUROPEAN TRENDS MAY HOLD CLUES
AS TO WHAT'S NEXT
Trends that catch on in Europe don't necessarily
become big hits in North America (ski bikes, for
example), but if we look to Europe for what might be
coming down the pipeline, a travel item by the
Associated Press may hold some clues. It notes that
Les 2 Alps in France "is ideal for trendy and upcoming
sports like skawl (a hybrid between skiing and
snowboarding), paraskiing (a sail generates wind to
glide skiers across ice or snow) and freestyle skiing.
With DJs blasting to accompany slope-goers, the
resort particularly suits a younger crowd." Other
trends: "the 'airboard,' a svelte inflatable body board
that allows the boarder to surf headfirst down slopes
at high speeds" and a retro contribution, ski joring horse-powered cross-country skiing.

Speaking of Benefits
Membership
The adage, “it’s never too late”, sadly does not apply to
submitting your BAC corporate lift ticket order. See below
for key dates and important information on this year’s
program:
Greetings, from Membership. Hope everyone is looking
forward to some snow and cooler weather, as I write this
article it is suppose to be 92 degrees today. I have just
about received all of the clubs rosters and dues
payments, I need to receive a few more. Some of the
clubs used the roster that was sent electronically and this
seems to work very well.
We have FWSA Membership cards for all of your club
members. I have been able to distribute them to the BAC
Reps at the meetings. If I do not see your clubs BAC
Rep at the meeting in November, I will mail the FWSA
Membership cards to your club Membership Chair.
If your club would rather have the electronic version of
the roster sent, please email your request to me. My
email is listed below. For your dues payments, please
mail them to me at 1340 North Pointe Place, Modesto CA
95355.

Clubs must submit a single consolidated ticket

Speaking of Alpine, the BAC price for Alpine tickets is 50
cents more than the resorts at-the-window price. You’re
probably asking yourself, “Why would anyone willingly
pay more for something?” Well, there is one excellent
reason: complimentary tickets. By purchasing Alpine
tickets through BAC, you help support the rewards
program that provides dirt-cheap tickets to clubs, reps,
and hard-working council volunteers. Fifty cents is truly a
small price for the many services BAC brings to you.

Helmet Recommendations
A recent federal recommendation that skiers and snowboarders wear helmets on the slopes has made
resorts nervous that the endorsement may be one step closer to helmet laws. Earlier this month, the U.S.
Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued the results of a snow sports study it conducted on
head injuries last season, with a recommendation skiers and snowboarders wear helmets. The study
concluded helmets could "prevent or reduce the severity of 44 percent of the head injuries to adults and 53
percent of head injuries to children younger than 15. Additionally, the CPSC study indicated helmets might prevent up to 11
deaths per year. The CPSC's recommendation prompted a swift, written response from the National Ski Areas Association
(NSAA), which emphasized responsible skiing and boarding as the first line of defense in avoiding injury. "NSAA urges all
skiers and boarders to consider wearing a helmet as one of many safety considerations - the first of'which should be always
skiing and boarding in a controlled and responsible manner.
Skiers apparently have decided that trees and unprotected heads aren't such a good match. As you might expect, helmet
sales increased dramatically in the weeks following the deaths of Michael Kennedy and Sonny Bono. Both died of head
injuries after colliding with trees. From the frantic media coverage that followed, skiers learned that Kennedy's and Bono's
deaths shared many similarities with other fatal slope accidents - experienced skiers on intermediate slopes, accidents late
in the day when the snowpack turns slick, heading off into the trees, not paying full attention to their skiing. Chris Stagg,
director of skiing at Taos, N.M., a resort that has been beleaguered with three skier fatalities this past season, believes
attention lapse is the single most important cause of most skier fatalities. "Skiers," he says, "always have to be thinking, just
as though they were driving a car, what would happen if I stop paying attention?" Many have speculated whether helmets
would have saved any of these skiers' lives. Dr. Jasper Shealy of the Rochester Institute of Technology, an academician
who has made a life long study of skier injuries, claims that the sort of helmet protection being considered for recreational
use typically offers some direct contact protection in speeds of up to 12 mph but limited protection at speeds in excess of
that. There's much evidence, says Shealy, that the catastrophic direct impact of skiers with trees or fixed objects involve
much higher speeds than this threshold. Nonetheless-and although the debate rolls on and no definitive consensus has
been reached - many adults have decided the extra protection can't hurt.
Alpine skiing helmets will be required for all junior racers this season.
Helmets remain strongly encouraged for all racers. One director mentioned that Tri-City Sporting Goods in Fremont
currently had a 50% off sale on last years helmets.
