• Influence of Fontainebleau:
After Fontainebleau my work became more precise, and more
colored. I became better at looking. The influences are easy to
identify: the daily view of the château garden and the exposure
to painting sharpened my eye. The tour of contemporary
architecture at the end of the session convinced me of the
pertinence of practice in Europe. I met my future husband
at Fontainebleau, fell in love, and moved back to France four years
later.

Fontainebleau is a unique oportunity to mix architecture
and music through various projects, and to develop our sense
of creativity. It reminded me of how much I love hand drawing!
The international side of this program is definitely its best asset,
and I will never forget all the wonderful architects
and musicians I met, and everything that we learned together.

• Influence of Fontainebleau:
The summer of 1984 lives fondly in my memory. My time in
Fontainebleau was the beginning of curiosities and connections
to the world. The travels, the friends, the music, all started then
and continue today. Many of my evenings were spent
in the basement of the Chateau with a bottle of red wine and
a baguette, cutting stone for the wall of mosaic.
I remember Marion Tournon-Branly coming down to the mosaic
gallery and kindly asking me to stop work and leave...
at midnight… and telling me that a young man does not say
‘bonne nuit’ to a woman.

• What is / was your profession?
Senior Project Architect / Manager
Taking projects from Concept sketches through Schematic design
& Construction documents to revealing a successfully completed
building “Duet” – a musical composition for two voices or
instruments.
• Influence of Fontainebleau:
At Fountainebleau I was taught a new meaning to “Duet”; it became
collaboration, a complement to two different forms of art creating
one masterpiece. Sculpting and Photography, Landscape and Urban
Design, Scenography and Textile, Architecture and Music were some
of the Duets I experienced. Practicing Architecture is a series of Duets.
I have the opportunity to collaborate with all trades in construction &
design, with artist, communities, humanitarian organizations,
with poor and wealthy clients, all on a daily bases.
Fountainebleau has given me that clarity and growth.

a Masters of Architecture candidate at the Cranbrook Academy

• Influence of Fontainebleau:
Throughout my career, I have explored design and craft at various
scales via architecture, sculpture, and jewelry. I have spent many
years working with fused glass, a passion I can directly attribute
to my time spent in the caves of Fountainebleau hand-cutting
glass for mosaic work. My practice of architecture is evolving
now toward design/build installations. I strongly believe that my
persistent movement toward work that bridges the gap between
design and craft has its roots in my foundational experience as
a student at Fountainebleau.

J’ai travaillé le verre en fusion, passion que

• Influence of Fontainebleau:
As one of the past Premier Prix awardees, the Fontainebleau
opportunity has allowed me to further my design research at a
lifetime experience and fellowship, of which I am pursuing this
Summer of 2013. Fontainebleau was a program that allowed me
to develop friendships and build on my passion of design, while
experiencing the multifaceted and culturally rich town of
Fontainebleau, City of Paris, and other parts of France.

Self-confidence in design and life and learning. An overwhelming
sense of design aesthetics and its principleswere discovered
during the summer at Fountainebleau with its varied fine arts
present. This understanding grew and developed while given
the opportunity to live + study in Paris and travel throughout
Europe the following year as part of the Fellowship. An ongoing
relationship with Marion Tournon-Branley throughout the past 32
years has pushed me into areas of self-exploration and expression
that I wouldn’t have discovered otherwise. More to the point is the
understanding and acceptance of the fact that “I am still learning”.

«In fact, my current job as a facade designer was an outcome
of my thesis, which was a blending of the density I experience
daily in urban Hong Kong, my awareness of the vast temporary
scaffoldings, the joy of being awarded the scenography award
when in Fontainebleau by chanting and acting with trees and
bamboos. Clearly, those few weeks in Fontainebleau brought me
the idea of my thesis, and from that thought came the act of a
year of research, and here I am pursuing the same interest I had

• Influence of Fontainebleau:
The focus of our projects at Fontainebleau was Clair-Obscur.
This effect sometimes described as light and shadow, for me,
is exemplified in gardens I create using the transitions of the
ephemeral plants/flowers appearing and disappearing through
the seasons to create desired feelings in the spaces. During that
summer, great friendships were forged which remain positive
influences that are clearly permanent though absent of the
luxury of daily contact.

• Influence of Fontainebleau:
I wished to have association with young artists (architects,
designers and visual artists) who were making things separate
from «familiar» forms and conversant with fresh motives. An
ability to articulate a root interest through a unique sense of
form, be it devoid of known content or narrative was essential
to that encounter. That experience and those aspects of the
creative process that might be called timeless or universal in
nature were apparent to me at Fontainebleau. I’ve been able to
retain those impulses to the benefit of my work.

Ce que vous a apporté Fontainebleau :
Mon expérience de Fontainebleau m’a rendue
consciente de ma passion pour la peinture
et a changé le cours de mes études. A mon

was during the summer of 1969. It was an exciting summer

painted under Idoux. I was experimenting with ideas of circular

of the Fontainebleau fine arts instructors gave me the courage
