I became better at looking. The influences are easy to identify: the daily view of the château garden and the exposure to painting sharpened my eye. The tour of contemporary architecture at the end of the session convinced me of the pertinence of practice in Europe. California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo • What is / was your profession? Architect_Studio 451, Montreal. My time in Fontainebleau was the beginning of curiosities and connections to the world. The travels, the friends, the music, all started then and continue today. Many of my evenings were spent in the basement of the Chateau with a bottle of red wine and a baguette, cutting stone for the wall of mosaic. I remember Marion Tournon-Branly coming down to the mosaic gallery and kindly asking me to stop work and leave... at midnight… and telling me that a young man does not say ‘bonne nuit’ to a woman. Senior Project Architect / Manager Taking projects from Concept sketches through Schematic design & Construction documents to revealing a successfully completed building “Duet” – a musical composition for two voices or instruments. • Influence of Fontainebleau: At Fountainebleau I was taught a new meaning to “Duet”; it became collaboration, a complement to two different forms of art creating one masterpiece. Sculpting and Photography, Landscape and Urban Design, Scenography and Textile, Architecture and Music were some of the Duets I experienced. Practicing Architecture is a series of Duets. I have the opportunity to collaborate with all trades in construction & design, with artist, communities, humanitarian organizations, with poor and wealthy clients, all on a daily bases. Fountainebleau has given me that clarity and growth. My practice of architecture is evolving now toward design/build installations. I strongly believe that my persistent movement toward work that bridges the gap between design and craft has its roots in my foundational experience as a student at Fountainebleau. Clearly, those few weeks in Fontainebleau brought me the idea of my thesis, and from that thought came the act of a year of research, and here I am pursuing the same interest I had two years ago as a profession. An ability to articulate a root interest through a unique sense of form, be it devoid of known content or narrative was essential to that encounter. That experience and those aspects of the creative process that might be called timeless or universal in nature were apparent to me at Fontainebleau. I’ve been able to retain those impulses to the benefit of my work.
