In the annual comparison study of 69 German cities, which was published in December 2014 in the business journal “Wirtschaftswoche”, Braunschweig once again achieved an excellent score: 1st place as the most business-friendly city and 6th place for dynamics - one place better than last year. Braunschweig has a future: as regards population development figures, the city has been in the black for eleven years. Perhaps partly because property investments are worthwhile here. In a Wirtschaftswoche ranking (6/2015), the city achieved third place from 26 cities of its class; for Spiegel Online (3/2015), property experts placed Braunschweig in fourth place in a comparison of 111 cities. One reason for this is certainly the municipal business development agancy BRAUNSCHWEIG Zukunft GmbH (Zukunft = future), which has established itself as point of single contact for the business community, for those wishing to settle here and for startups. We mediate between the interests of private enterprises and the municipality. This enables us to help companies to fulfil more quickly the requirements of the city administration, as package solutions from a single source speed up approval processes. This has a favourable effect on the company‘s success and the economic climate. The diversity of modern society, influenced by globalisation and demographic change, characterises our economic life. The City of Braunschweig and its businesses have therefore signed the “Charta der Vielfalt” (Diversity Charter). They stand for a culture of solidarity in our society, for reciprocal acceptance and mutual trust. In a broad regional skilled workforce alliance and together with labour market partners, enterprises and the public sector, we create a co-ordinated framework of promising measures for safeguarding the availability of a skilled workforce in the city and the region. BRAUNSCHWEIG Zukunft GmbH advises on location issues, procures commercial space, promotes business-founders and manages a successful technology park, which has already twice received the title “Anerkanntes Innovationszentrum” (Recognised innovation centre) from the ADT – German Association of Innovation, Technology and Business Incubation Centres. This was the starting place for many companies which are today conducting business both nationally and internationally from Braunschweig – proving that technology transfer functions perfectly with us. Braunschweig is indeed an excellent residential and business location. Cultural monuments and mediaeval squares provide the city on the Oker with a special flair and turn a stroll through the city into an experience. The city offers quality of life and many recreational opportunities; furthermore, the Harz region and the heathlands of the Lüneburger Heide are located nearby. Braunschweig is at the centre of the most research-intensive region in Germany. Science and research co-operate closely with the economy – a particularly impressive example of this can be seen at the Research Airport, where successful knowledge networking has made Braunschweig a European centre for mobility research. Recent settlements here include the Lower Saxony research centres for aerospace and automotive engineering - collaborations between the Technical University of Braunschweig and the German Aerospace Center and Volkswagen respectively. Together with more than 40 companies, they form an innovation network at the Research Airport with exemplary co-operation. It is not only science that has charisma: The Braunschweig State Theatre with four sectors and a renowned orchestra has a reputation which is just as excellent as that of the museums, of which the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum possesses a collection of paintings of leading European importance. Diverse leisure opportunities are offered by the lively cultural scene as well as the sport sector. Furthermore, Braunschweig is also very family-friendly: early childhood education and care of schoolchildren are being intensified, the proportion of all-day schools is being increased and school refurbishment is being accelerated. Children can choose from the full range of school forms - including an international school. In addition, Braunschweig is an important university city in Lower Saxony, with its Technical University (TU), University of Art (HBK) and the Welfenakademie. Mehr Informationen: www.braunschweig.de www.braunschweig.de/bestchoice www.braunschweig.de/stadtfilm Photo: BSM/okerland-archiv Photo: Stadthalle Braunschweig Betriebsgesellschaft mbH Science is also expanding in the university district, where the Braunschweig Integrated Centre of Systems Biology was formed – a further co-operation of the TU, in this case with the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research. Here, biologists, mathematicians, computer scientists and engineers want to work together to make fundamental biomedical research more efficient. Another interdisciplinary example is the research which will be conducted into the field of personalised medicine at the Centre for Pharmaceutical Process Engineering, which will be completed at the end of 2016. 4 5 Braunschweig in figures Transport links Photo: BSM/okerland-archiv Braunschweig‘s geographic location in the centre of Germany and the good transport links make the city and the region an excellently-reachable transportation hub in the heart of Europe. Flughafen Braunschweig-Wolfsburg The Braunschweig-Wolfsburg Airport, directly next to the A 2 motorway, is a transport hub in the region for charter and private flights and is, through the Forschungsflughafen Braunschweig (Research Airport Braunschweig), a significant location for cross-modal mobility research. Hanover International Airport is only around 60km away. www.flughafen-braunschweig.de Local public transport Braunschweig has an excellent local public transport network which extends beyond the city limits and far into the region. Numerous regional express (RE) trains, regional (RB) trains and regional bus lines connect the city with its surrounding area, whilst the dense network in the city is served by trams and buses. www.zgb.de Hafen Braunschweig The Port of Braunschweig on the Mittelland Canal enables connections via the waterways throughout the whole of Europe. The cargo turnover reaches an annual magnitude of around 1 million tonnes. Two gantry cranes and two reach stackers guarantee fast container handling. Braunschweig has the largest inland port for containers in Northern Germany. The ideal location of the port, directly next to the intersection of the A 2 motorway from east to west and the A 39 southbound, ensures fast and direct transportation of inbound and outbound goods. Direct access to the Deutsche Bahn rail network is enabled via the port railway of the Hafenbetriebsgesellschaft Braunschweig GmbH (port operating company). www.braunschweig-hafen.de (excerpt; as at 30.06.2014) Other service providers including: freelance, scientific and technical services other economic service providers publ. administration, defence, social security information and communication financial and insurance services 6 27.068 (22,3 %) 20.974 (17,3 %) 4.135 (3,4 %) 94.426 (77,7 %) 24.557 (20,2 %) 69.869 (57,5 %) 16.671 11.653 (13,7 %) (9,6 %) 6.981 4.079 3.206 (5,7 %) (3,4 %) (2,6 %) Photo: Hafen BS including: manufacturing industries construction industry Service providers, total/tertiary sector thereof: trade, transport and storage, hospitality sector Photo: J. Sperber Production industry 7 Business and research The attractiveness of a city can be seen in its beauty and flair, but sometimes also in rational data. Braunschweig has both: a city centre with flair and an exceptionally high retail trade centrality index of 144 points. In 2013, the city achieved a turnover of nearly 750 million euros for a sales area of approximately 180,000 square metres. structure of Braunschweig. The New Yorker Group, one of the largest companies for young fashion, also expanded outwards from Braunschweig into around 40 countries. A further example is the company Auro, pioneer and market leader in the production of natural paints and ecological coatings or Solvis, technologically leading manufacturer of solar energy equipment in Europe. Braunschweig’s power of attraction is by no means characterised solely through trade. More than 75 years ago, the Volkswagen AG success story began in the Braunschweig “Vorwerk”. At that time, nobody could imagine that the car manufacturer would one day become one of the greatest players on the global competition field. Even today, the Braunschweig plant is one of the most important companies in the city, with approximately 8,700 employees producing vehicle components for the entire VW group. The aspiring GOM GmbH develops and manufactures optical measurement systems and solutions for 3D co-ordinate measuring technology, material and construction component-testing in industry and research. Fujitsu Semiconductor, a supplier of semiconductor components and system solutions for the market segments automotive, digital TV, mobile telephones, network and communication technology, has a development laboratory in the city. Rapid development also occurred for the Volkswagen Financial Services AG, founded in 1994, which has responsibility for the co-ordination of the worldwide financial services of the Volkswagen Group in 51 countries. Together with the Braunschweigische Landessparkasse (savings bank), the Öffentliche Versicherung Braunschweig (insurance company) and the Volksbank Braunschweig-Wolfsburg (co-operative bank), a significant financial cluster with approximately 8,500 employees has thereby been created in Braunschweig. Braunschweig is at the centre of the most research-intensive region of Germany, in which 7.32 percent of the gross domestic product is spent on research and development (Eurostat 2011). Today, more than 15,000 people work and research in Braunschweig in around 250 companies from the high-tech sector and 27 research institutions. Along with Volkswagen, the company is one of the focal points for the high level of competence of the city and the region as regards the subject of mobility. Together with the expertise of the Technical University of Braunschweig, the German Aerospace Center, the companies resident at the research airport and further research institutions, an internationally-renowned mobility cluster has developed. 9 Scientists from the Technical University of Braunschweig and the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) examine micro-organisms which cause infections or which can be used in the manufacture of pharmaceutical agents. www.tu-braunschweig.de/forschung/zentren/brics Bundesamt für Verbraucherschutz und Lebensmittelsicherheit (BVL) The Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) is an independent higher federal authority within the operational division of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture. www.bvl.bund.de Bundesstelle für Flugunfalluntersuchung (BFU) The German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) is a higher federal authority within the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure. All manner of projects can therefore qualify for grants or loans from EU, federal, state or other funding bodies, which may also be supplemented through guarantee or shareholding programmes. Good funding opportunities exist for research and development projects from small and medium-sized businesses if they want to develop or further develop their own products or want to optimise development processes. Particularly at European level, their access to a number of programmes has been simplified significantly. BRAUNSCHWEIG Zukunft GmbH provides orientational guidance for business projects as well as advice on suitable funding opportunities. The cultural and creative industries are moving more and more into the focus of support from the federal government, states and municipalities. The City of Braunschweig thus subsidises initiatives or projects which are suitable for assisting the industry in general. These include, for example, improving the public presence or an improved networking of sub-sectors. Braunschweiger Gründerfonds In 2007, the City of Braunschweig established Gründerfonds (founder funds) for start-ups and young companies with headquarters in Braunschweig. From these, grants are provided for the founding or acquisition of a company as the entry into self-employment as well as for the expansion of a company. The grants can lie between 1,000 and 7,500 euros. Excluded therefrom are freelance entrepreneurs - with the exception of the field of cultural and creative industries - as well as start-ups in the fields of gastronomy and manual skills without a “Meistertitel” (title of master craftsman). Additional requirements: • A conclusive business concept with business plan. • The application must be submitted no later than 36 months following the initial commencement of entrepreneurial activity – prior to entering into contractual obligations which are related to the planned investments. • If necessary, the required authorisations for the founding must be submitted. • The company headquarters must be located in Braunschweig for at least three years. • The number of employees must be less than ten. • The annual turnover or annual balance sheet total must not exceed two million euros.
