Resident 2014-2015 Resident Officers: President Vice Pres. Secretary Elizabeth Cromack Theresa Schwartz Chyrel Hayes Thank You From Our Staff SHOW OFF! ARTS and CRAFTS We have a good time during Arts and Crafts! Our residents’ creations are simply beautiful. Take a look! Creativity in Seniors With Dementia Dan Cohen of New York had a simple idea: Furnish people that have memory loss with an iPod loaded with their favorite music. It’s helping people reconnect with themselves by listening to their personal playlists. Cohen notes, “Residents who were formerly idle become engrossed in listening to their favorite music. They choose the songs they want to hear. They become engaged as the music triggers memories. Sometimes the experience can even make people more social.” Headphones are recommended to minimize distractions. Sit together, turn on the iPod and watch for smiles of delight. Ms. Sullivan’s “Little Peeps Hanger” How Times Have Changed Ms. Wright shows off her handmade envelope. Some of your experiences that were once part of everyday life are now foreign concepts to today’s generation. See if you remember these things that have faded away with the changing times. Party lines. Between 1930 and 1950, phone service for many rural and suburban homes consisted of a party line—a telephone line shared among several households. It was possible for anyone on the party line to pick up their phone receiver and end up in the GLAMMA! Aren’t these nails GORGEOUS! They belong to one of our residents. Her daughter comes by every week to give her a new mural for her nails. Who is this sassy Glamma? Look on page 3. middle of someone else’s call, so conversations were not always private. S&H Green Stamps. Similar to today’s rewards programs, many retailers offered S&H Green Stamps as bonuses to shoppers based on the dollar amount of their purchase. Shoppers could save up stamps and exchange them for merchandise from a catalog. S&H and other stamp programs were most popular in the mid-1960s. TV stations signing off. Before the days of 24-hour broadcasting, TV stations would often end the day’s programming in the early morning hours by playing a recording of the national anthem. Today, instead of signing off, infomercials are often the norm for overnight schedules. Volunteer Guess Who!! Corner “The human contribution is the essential ingredient. That was the largest loss of firefighters in the line of duty ever in the United States history. Our facility did not forget the lives of those men and women who served our country. GHCC, Texas City marked the anniversary by serving an appreciation breakfast to all firefighters, EMTs and law enforcement officials in our community. Here’s a picture of some of Texas City’s finest firefighters. Below that, our Dietary Director and Social Services Director. Why it’s Guadalupe Russo! ————————————— Resident Party On Aug. 29 our seniors celebrated Labor Day with a knock-out party that was combined with August birthdays. You had to be there to see all of the action! D.J. Latimer rocked the facility with music of the ’50s and ’60s. The music could be heard down any hall and our bed-bound residents were clapping their hands to the beat! After all that dancing, the group cooled down with a game of indoor volleyball. Our nursing staff reported that most of the residents fell asleep early that night. You don’t say! We did it again! Another trip to Isle of Capri Casino in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The minute we got off the bus, we made our way to that delicious buffet. So much to choose from! We stopped just one shrimp away from being too full. No time to nap.....Cha Ching!!! Our caregivers did a wonderful job of making sure our five residents were happy. You can look at this photo to tell who won and who didn’t! 39 43 44 47 48 52 57 29 30 33 36 37 40 41 45 64 65 42 46 49 50 53 54 58 38 59 66 60 51 55 61 62 67 69 70 72 73 63 53. 55. 56. 57. 58. 59. 60. 62. 63. 64. 65. 67.
