CONFESSIONS: Saturday 8:30am to 10:00am FROM THE DESK OF O FATHER DAVIS: ur Scripture readings this weekend confront with an obvious but sobering reality. Our earthly life is very fragile. In fact, it is temporary and passing. It will end one day. We should, therefore, never take it for granted. All we but have to do is to reflect on the recent typhoon in the Philippines and other natural disasters, to easily know how life can be here one day and gone the next. It certainly gives us great reason for pause! Each one of us should see life for what it is and, in the light of its eventual and unavoidable mortal conclusion, live it in a way that reflects a deep spiritual appreciation for its meaning, while we have it. Our contemporary world often blinds us, even anesthetizes us, to the question of death, and reflections on the ultimate meaning of life. So much of our culture puts emphasis on the here and now, on anti-aging potions and creams, on products and lifestyles that attempt to turn back the hands of time, on the things that help us forget, if not deny, that time marches on, that we are getting older. The truth is, however, that no matter how hard we try, we cannot escape the “end game” of life. For most of us, the reality of life’s very fragile nature should make us shed a tear or two, in remorse, for our lack of focus, for all the distractions that we allow to consume us. We all need a bit more reflection on the branch of philosophy, known as teleology, i.e, the study of the ultimate goal, the target, or the final end of life. This would surely pave the way for us to begin to probe the deeper questions of life and consider their spiritual meaning. Each one of us should put to ourselves the following question: “how would I fare if I were called before the judgment seat of God today?” I am sure that the best among us would certainly want to be as prepared as we could be. There is so much good that we have left undone, so many faults for which we have not atoned properly, so many uncharitable thoughts in our minds about our friends and neighbors, so many acts of generosity that we keep postponing, so many acts of thanksgiving and praise we have not made to our loving God. Yes, I am sure we could all handle things in our personal lives a little bit better, especially in the light of eternity. The conclusion of our earthly life, one day, is an assured fact; and Jesus teaches us to be ready. This life is tending toward the next. Our personal eschaton is directly related to our daily choices and the way we live our lives now. Our treasured faith powerfully assists us in properly orienting our lives to what they should be in Christ. Let’s be sure that we are ready, then. We never know the day nor the hour. Let’s be clear, though. While there is assuredly a certain level of accountability we must all face for our stewardship of the life we have been given, our treasured faith also positions us to live in the hope of the promises of Christ. We, therefore, take confidence in the words of Jesus, which bring us hope, light, and life. It’s a great case for church, sacraments, prayer, piety, devotion, and a healthy spiritual life. They keep us strong and focused as we wait in living hope for Lord of glory. Both the prophet Malachi and Jesus in the Gospel according to Luke offer graphic pictures of a terrible future. But we are missing the message if we use these passages to speculate about when the world will end. The troubles predicted have already occurred, and then some. In the last century alone we have seen devastation beyond anything the ancient prophets could have imagined. We weren’t given these passages to strike fear in our hearts, but faith. The sun of justice will rise, Malachi assures us, for those who are faithful. And Jesus promises, “By your perseverance you will secure your lives.” But it is Paul who brings the message down to earth. The Thessalonians were so sure that the end of the world was upon them, some of them had stopped working! Paul states his case clearly: “If anyone was unwilling to work, neither should that one eat.” We are not called to worry about how things will end, but to live today faithfully. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION W e are faced with strong and disturbing readings today that hold a certain fascination, since they seem at first glance to be blueprints for future inevitable wars and hardship. A fundamentalist interpretation focuses on this aspect. Yet we hear them at our Sunday celebration of the Eucharist, which infuses them with hope and optimism. Rather than dreading the future, today’s liturgy assures us that God is with us in all of life’s inevitable trials, and that we have a role in shaping the outcome of human history. Occasionally, some Christians have attempted to decode these readings for an exact measure of the world’s end, but they have thus far been disappointed. “Nothing lasts forever” is a lyric from a Broadway show. Stars fall from the sky, leaves wither and fall, mountains wash into the sea, human projects and governments totter and collapse with great regularity. Today’s liturgy opposes this idea as incomplete, reminding us that Christ has made a permanent change in human history, and that life in him is life forever. Rather than inviting us to throw in the towel, today’s liturgy strengthens us for acts of goodness and grace in our families, communities, and world. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. As Catholics, we know that God created us male and female for a reason: our bodies, psyches, and biochemistry differ because our vocations differ. Only by rediscovering our identity as either male or female can we discover the gift of our lives and the genuine happiness that comes from living according to either the masculine or the feminine mode of loving. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, © Copyright, J.
