A Chingay procession is held in celebration of the birthdays of Chinese deities or the procession of the Goddess of Mercy (Guanyin). The earliest known procession in Malaysia was held more than 100 years ago. Chingay is viewed as street art where performers balance giant flags that range from 7 to 10metres in height and weigh about 27 kg. Today, Chingay is not only performed by the Chinese, but the art has 3 KEMBARA PLUS ONLINE SEPTEMBER/OKTOBER 2015 Dragon boat races attract teams from all over the world S uccessfully attracted Malays and Indians too to become a unique multiracial performance. The popularity of Chingay in Penang has made it one of the very impressive cultural landmarks as well as an important tourist attraction. The Sarawak International Dragon Boat Regatta has an interesting history which dates back to 1872 during Rajah Brooke’s rule. The Sarawak River was then the main gateway into Kuching, especially for trading of essential goods, communication and protection from potential enemies. A regatta was held annually as a recreational sport on the river which winds through beautiful landscape and passes by colonial buildings like the Fort Margherita, the Square Tower and the Astana. Many stories also surround the Sarawak River, one of which is the famous Brooke Swim which will be revived during this year’s Regatta as a side event. 25 teams from Brunei, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, Singapore and Chinese Taipei have confirmed their participation in the Regatta. Local teams taking part are from Sabah, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Kedah and Sarawak who will be vying for the coveted “Raja Sungai” or King of the River title in longboats carrying from seven to 30 paddlers, depending on the category they are contesting in. The Sarawak International Dragon Boat Regatta offers a total prize money of RM50,000 while the top four placed teams will receive trophies and medals. Apart from the Dragon Boat races, local food and handicraft exhibitions will also be held. Other side events include 4 KEMBARA PLUS ONLINE SEPTEMBER/OKTOBER 2015 a mooncake festival, a duck catching competition, tug-of-war, canoeing and performances by local singers. A new feature this year will be the Doughnut Boat where boats shaped like doughnuts with a seating capacity of 12 people will be introduced for the public to enjoy. In Chinese belief, the dragon is the highest-ranking animal in the animal hierarchy, strongly associated at one time with the emperor and hence power and majesty, wealth and wisdom. Its origins are vague, but tradition has it that the dragon is composed of nine different animals. It is the only mythological animal of the 12 animals that represent the Chinese calendar. The next Year of the Dragon is 2024. -By K. This can be achieved through adherence to a variety of general rules, as well as the practice of specific driving techniques. TIPS STAY FOCUSED ON DEFENSIVE DRIVING • • • Keep 100% of your attention on driving at all times. Always be aware of what others around you are doing and expect the unexpected. Don’t use a mobile phone or any other electronic device while driving. PRACTICE SAFE DRIVING TIPS • Build time into your trip schedule to stop for food, rest breaks and phone calls or other business. • Adjust your seat and mirrors before putting the car in gear. PRIORITIZE CAR SAFETY • Secure cargo that may move around while the vehicle is in motion. Don’t attempt to retrieve items that fall to the floor. • Have items needed within easy reach, such as toll fees and toll cards. SLOW DOWN • Don’t speed − it gives you less time to react and increases the severity of an accident. THINK SAFETY • Always wear your seat belt and drive sober and drug-free. Extracted from www.nationwide.com 29 KEMBARA PLUS ONLINE SEPTEMBER/OKTOBER 2015 SAFETY TIPS FUEL SAVINGTIPS DRIVE MORE EFFICIENTLY • Drive Sensibly :Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) wastes fuel. It can lower your fuel mileage by 33 percent at highway speeds and by 5 percent around town. • Observe the Speed Limit : While each vehicle reaches its optimal fuel economy at a different speed (or range of speeds), fuel mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 80 km/h. Observing the speed limit is also safer. • Remove Excess Weight: Avoid keeping unnecessary items in your vehicle, especially heavy ones. • Avoid Excessive Idling: Idling can use a quarter to a half gallon of fuel per hour, depending on engine size and air conditioner (AC) use. Turn off your engine when your vehicle is parked. • Use Cruise Control: Using cruise control on the highway helps you maintain a constant speed and, in most cases, will save fuel. KEEPING YOUR CAR IN SHAPE • KeepYour Engine Properly Tuned: Fixing a car that is noticeably out of tune or has failed an emissions test can improve its fuel mileage by an average of 4 percent, though results vary based on the kind of repair and how well it is done. • Keep Tyres Properly Inflated: You can improve your fuel mileage by up to 3.3 percent by keeping your tyres inflated to the proper pressure. Under-inflated tyres can lower fuel mileage by 0.3 percent for every 1 psi drop in pressure of all four tyres. Properly inflated tires are safer and last longer. Jogging in place/ joging setempat Hebat untuk jantung. 7. Angkat Berat Tidak perlu pergi kedai beli alat sukan mahal beli besi angkat berat mahupun dumbel. Guna sahaja apa-apa yang ada di rumah.
