You need to find a good cleanser that your skin responds well to and stick with it. Do not overwash— once in the morning and evening is all your skin needs. Use lukewarm water— never wash your face with hot or cold water (both can cause broken capillaries). 2 3 4 To tone or not to tone? Some people skip this step, but it is a great way to remove residue or cleanser left on your face, restore your skin’s pH balance, shrink pores and remove oil. Apply a small amount of toner to a soft cotton ball or pad and gently blot your face. Moisturizer They come in all shapes and sizes, and finding the perfect moisturizer for you is essential for healthy, glowing skin. Apply morning and night; if desired, get one with anti-aging/correcting benefits. When you start caring for your skin — by good hydration and strong collagen and elastin — not only will you see a huge difference in four weeks, you will look more radiant and your makeup can be applied effortlessly on your fresh canvas. Eye Cream I get asked all the time: Can I just use my face cream under my eyes? Although in theory it sounds OK, you are not giving your eyes what they need. The skin under your eyes is much thinner than the skin on your face, creating two completely different skin textures … with two very different needs. Unlike general face cream, eye cream targets specific eye-area issues, like puffiness, fine lines and dark circles. It also tends to be more emollient since skin under your eyes is much drier than your face. Think of your skin like a grape: If the grape stays nice and moisturized, it is smooth and round. As soon as it starts to lose moisture, it becomes a dry raisin, which in our skin means wrinkles! This last step soon became my favorite when I saw how much better my concealer looked when I applied it after using eye cream. My mom died of breast cancer when I was young. I can remember going with her to her doctor’s visits and playing in the lobby and in the parking lot. One of my goals is to help build a kids’ zone at our local breast cancer treatment center so that kids can come with their mom and be supervised and play games and do activities while waiting. My foundation also helps kids with Crohn’s and provides encouragement and instruction to young kids about being healthy and active. JLL: The Jaguars traded up to draft a young quarterback out of Missouri, Blaine Gabbert, giving up a second-round pick in the process. You will be asked to mentor the “quarterback of the future.” How do you view that role, and what will be the first piece of advice you give him? JLL: Every kid playing sports likes to emulate their favorite player. Is there a football player that you wanted to be like when you grew up? What was it about that player that made you want to be like him? DG: Lawrence Taylor. I loved the way he approached the game and his attitude toward winning. He gave it his all and was the ultimate team player. JLL: You lost your mother to breast cancer at a young age. How did that impact you, and what is your fondest memory of her? Who were some of the most influential people in your development after she was gone? DG: I remember a lot about my mom. She was my hero. The way she handled her diagnosis was amazing to me. She never gave up and was always positive about life and her circumstances. When she was gone, my oldest brother, Anthony, took on the parental role. He made sure that we — my sister, Andrianne, and brother Quincy and I — did our schoolwork and completed our responsibilities. I remember one time, Anthony told me to 48 | July /August 2011 take out the trash and I forgot. He got me up at 5 a.m. to make me do my chores. JLL: You were diagnosed in 2004 with Crohn’s disease. This painful disease affects 1.4 million Americans, but it is not widely known. What do you think people should know about it? DG: They should know that although the disease is very personal and private, you shouldn’t be ashamed of it. I know kids have a hard time dealing with the whole going-to-thebathroom stuff at school and having to explain to their friends what they are going through. I would tell them, ‘Do not be ashamed!’ I feel like the Lord has blessed me with Crohn’s so that I can be a blessing to others. JLL: You started the David Garrard Foundation. Tell me about it and what your goals are for the foundation. You have an impressive list of corporate sponsors. How do people get involved? DG: The David Garrard Foundation is my way of helping those who have gone through or DG: I remember coming into the league, and Mark Brunell was the starter. He was such a mentor to me both on and off the field. I am actually a member at his church now and have been since coming to Jacksonville. He did more for me than he will ever know beyond the football field. My advice to Blaine would be to not get caught up in the hype that accompanies the QB position. The same people that love you one week will scream for your head the next. Keep your priorities straight, because before you know it, you’ll be on the backside of your career. Work hard and play hard, but remember who you are and what is most important. JLL: At 34 years of age, how much longer do you want to play football? What do you see yourself doing once you retire from the NFL? DG: I still feel young, and as much as I would like to keep playing for 10 more years, I know that probably won’t happen. My family and I love Jacksonville, and after 10 years here, I can say that I feel like this is home to me. My goal is to win a Super Bowl for this city, help Blaine take over the role as starting QB and then retire a Jaguar. How many years that will take is yet “My message to Jaguar fans would be to stay supportive. ... they are our 12th man and they get us hyped on game day.” to be seen, but if I could have it my way, that’d be my goal. JLL: The Jaguars had a good chance to make the play-offs last year but couldn’t “get over the hump” and win the game(s) they needed to win at the end of the year. What is going to make the difference this year to propel the Jaguars into the play-offs? DG: It all comes down to execution. We have the talent to be an elite team. We started off very strong this past year but couldn’t put the nail in the coffin when the time came. Although I am a veteran and we had quite a few on our team, we were still young. We are a team that is built around a team mentality. To win, we must all be contributors. JLL: What message do you have for Jaguar DG: Both sides need to figure it out fans? What can we expect to see this season? and stop trying to ruin it for the fans. There is enough money to go around DG: My message to Jaguar fans would be and a solution cannot be that hard to to stay supportive. We are not a team like the come up with. Steelers that has a nationwide fan base. That makes the fans that we do have that much JLL: We all see a tough, competitive David more important. They are our 12th man and they get us hyped on game day. This year, our fans can expect to get 100 percent effort from each and every player that wears teal. Obviously that doesn’t translate into a championship, but that is and will be our ultimate goal in the end. It always has been, and this year is no different. Garrard on the field. Who is David Garrard off the field? What do you like to do during the offseason? Do you have any hobbies? DG: David Garrard off the field is a big teddy bear. I love to golf, fish and, most important, spend time with my beautiful wife and awesome son. During the off-season, we love to deep-sea fish and go on trips, whether it’s JLL: What are your thoughts on the ongoing to St. Augustine or someplace further. dispute between the NFL owners and players?
