May 8th, 2016
Happy Mothers Day!
from Old St. Patrick's Church
Risen Lord, the angel that announced your rising spoke
to an audience of but a few women from Galilee.
And then you appeared, risen in the body,
but first only to Mary of Magdala.
We look back on all the centuries of your Church,
born of this small, faithful band,
nurtured through the ages so often by the special grace given to women.
Lord, teach us to honor women, in body and in spirit.
For these great disciples have taught us to heal the sick,
to feed the poor, to sow mercy and justice, to make peace.
And we call on them now to pray for us,
as we take up the cross ourselves.
Lord, as we are heirs to the Gospel, so too you have made us heirs of these women.
Teach us to sing the song, in our words and deeds,
that our sisters and mothers have taught us:
That Jesus Christ is risen from the dead.
Amen.

Invisible Mothers
(and Fathers)
Mother's Day May 8, 2016
It all began to make sense,
the blank stares, the lack of
response, the way one of the
kids will walk into the room
while I'm on the phone and
ask to be taken to the store.
Inside I'm thinking, 'Can't you see I'm on the phone?'
Obviously not; no one can see if I'm on the phone, or
cooking, or sweeping the floor, or even standing on my
head in the corner, because no one can see me at all. I'm
invisible. The invisible Mom.
Some days I am only a pair of hands, nothing more: Can
you fix this ? Can you tie this? Can you open this? Some
days I'm not a pair of hands; I'm not even a human
being. I'm a clock to ask, 'What time is it?' I'm a satellite
guide to answer, 'What number is the Disney Channel?'
I'm a car to order, 'Right around 5:30, please.'
I was certain that these were the hands that once held
books and the eyes that studied history and the mind
that graduated summa cum laude - but now they had
disappeared into the peanut butter, never to be seen
again. She's going, she's going, she's gone!
One night, a group of us were having dinner, celebrating
the return of a friend from England. Janice had just
gotten back from a fabulous trip, and she was going on
and on about the hotel she stayed in. I was sitting there,
looking around at the others all put together so well. It
was hard not to compare and feel sorry for myself. I was
feeling pretty pathetic, when Janice turned to me with
a beautifully wrapped package, and said, 'I brought you
this.' It was a book on the great cathedrals of Europe. I
wasn't exactly sure why she'd given it to me until I read
her inscription:
'To Charlotte, with admiration for the greatness of what
you are building when no one sees.'
In the days ahead I would read - no, devour - the book.
And I would discover what would become for me, four
life-changing truths, after which I could pattern my
work: No one can say who built the great cathedrals
- we have no record of their names. These builders
2
gave their whole lives for a work they would never see
finished. They made grea t sacrifices and expected no
credit. The passion of their building was fueled by their
faith that the eyes of God saw everything.
A legendary story in the book told of a rich man who
came to vi sit the cathedral while it was being built, and
he saw a workman carving a tiny bird on the inside of a
beam. He was puzzled and asked the man, 'Why are you
spending so much time carving that bird into a beam
that will be covered by the roof? No one will ever see it.'
And the workman replied, 'Because God sees.'
I closed the book, feeling the missing piece fall into
place. It was almost as if I heard God whispering to
me, 'I see you, Charlotte. I see the sacrifices you make
every day, even when no one around you does. No act
of kindness you've done, no sequin you've sewn on, no
cupcake you've baked, is too small for me to notice and
smile over. You are building a great cathedral, but you
can't see right now what it will become.'
At times, my invisibility feels like an affliction. But
it is not a disease that is erasing my life It is the cure
for the disease of my own self-centeredness. It is the
antidote to my strong, stubborn pride. I keep the right
perspective when I see myself as a great builder. As one
of the people who show up at a job that they will never
see finished, to work on something that their name will
never be on. The writer of the book went so far as to say
that no cathedrals could ever be built in our lifetime
because there are so few people willing to sacrifice to
that degree.
When I really think about it, I don't want my son to
tell the friend he's bringing home from college for
Thanksgiving, 'My Mom gets up at 4 in the morning
and bakes homemade pies, and then she hand bastes
a turkey for three hours and presses all the linens
for the table.' That would mean I'd built a shrine or a
monument to myself. I just want him to want to co me
home. And then, if there is anything more to say to his
friend, to add, 'You're gonna love it there .'
As mothers, we are building great cathedrals. We cannot
be seen if we're doing it right. And one day, it is very
possible that the world will marvel, not only at what we
have built, but at the beauty that has been added to the
world by the sacrifices of invisible women.

Providence
By: Clare L Hurrelbrink
Today’s reflection is dedicated to
Sophie, one of our second graders
at FXW who just lost her mother.
At the celebration of her mother’s life, Sophie’s dad so
eloquently and affectionately shared stories of his love..
his heart, although now broken, beats holding on to his
memories of her. He spoke of Providence at work in their
lives, describing how they met. Their love story was no
coincidence. Friends and family will help Sophie and her
dad in the coming days…for Providence placed them in
their lives. Providence is defined as “divine guidance or
care; God conceived as the power sustaining and guiding
human destiny.” God calling her home was providential.
Mother’s Day is singlehandedly one of the most profound,
emotional, and blessed days of the
year. Witnessing Sophie’s strength
and perseverance these past couple
weeks has both inspired and saddened
me, as the memories of my own
mother’s untimely death 38 years ago
came rushing through my heart. Back
then I stumbled upon the first steps
of my own journey as a ‘motherless
daughter’. With a strong foundation
of faith, I knew God had wrapped me
in His loving arms…it felt like a warm
and toasty blanket on a cold day. I believe today He has
wrapped Sophie.
I have long forgotten many details of those first few
days, weeks and months after her death. What I haven’t
forgotten are some of the memories that warm my
heart…25 goodnight kisses every night, wearing Chanel
#5, singing in her church choir, Lilies of the Valley, and
sweetly singing “Good Morning Mary Sunshine” to us
every morning. She left me with her spirit, her strength
and her passion.
Our loving God cares for all of us without ceasing so we
can grow in faith and in His love. He helps us to abide
always in Christ, our true vine. As mothers, our branches
are endless, so also is our love. These branches of love
constantly reach out and touch our children, spouses,
families and friends. These branches of love know no
boundaries. A mother’s gift asks nothing in return but a
smile.
3
There is a Chinese proverb “an invisible red thread
connects those who are destined to meet regardless of
time, place or circumstance. The thread may stretch or
tangle, but it will never break.” Chinese folklore uses the
image of the red thread to describe destiny. It says that
invisible, red threads connect newborn babies to all the
people who will be important in their lives. The threads
shorten as these people, bound from birth, come together.
Our belief that God guides our paths sometimes leaves the
faithful troubled. How do we reconcile the idea that God
has a divine plan with the reality of losing someone we
love too soon? In the face of such difficult challenges, we
often don’t know where to turn. As simple as it sounds,
Jesus offers us an answer in John’s Gospel: “My children,
I will be with you only a little while longer. I give you a
new commandment: Love one another. As I have loved
you, so you also should love one another. This is how all
will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for
one another.” The greatest lesson a mother can
teach her young is how to love one another as
well.
Motherhood is filled with questions, comfort,
discipline, hugs, words of encouragement,
and unconditional love. Motherhood can also
be filled with distance, uncertainly, fear, and
harshness. Relationships between mothers and
children are messy, complicated, frustrating
and joyful all at the same time. Motherhood is
by far the most demanding, exhausting, worry
filled, joyful and celebratory job in the world.
Pope Francis believes “To be a mother is a great treasure.
Mothers, in their unconditional and sacrificial love for
their children, are the antidote to individualism; they are
the greatest enemies against war.” We remind ourselves
that we are able to love as Christ loves because we are
immersed in the Paschal Mystery. We must love with
compassion, mercy, and forgiveness, and work for a just
world.
The worship aid from the celebration of Sophie’s mom
included the following quote by Anne Lamott, “I do not
at all understand the mystery of grace—only that it meets
us where we are but does not leave us where it found us.”
May God’s grace hold our mothers and those seeking
motherhood in the gentle palm of His hand.
Blessings for a delightful Mother’s Day!

WITH AUTHOR AND NATIONALLY KNOWN CATHOLIC
COMMENTATOR
JOHN GEHRING
FOLLOWED BY Q&A AND BOOK SIGNING
Praise for The Francis Effect
“John Gehring has created a stirring, multidimensional account of
Catholicism in the twenty-first century.”
— Sister Simone Campbell, author of A Nun on the Bus
Tuesday, May 17th
About The Francis Effect
7 - 8:30 p.m.
Pope Francis, the first Latin American pope, is shaking up a church that
has been mired in scandal and demoralized by devastating headlines. His
bracing critique of an out-of-touch hierarchy, pastoral style when it comes
to divisive issues, and humble gestures rejecting the trappings of papal
power have changed the conversation about the world’s most powerful
religious institution. The Francis Effect explores how a church once known
as a towering force for social justice became known for a narrow agenda
most closely aligned with one political party, then looks at the opportunities
for change in the “age of Francis.”

Visit and comfort the sick - year of mercy
Here at Old St. Pat's, our
Social Action Ministry
invites you into the corporal
works of mercy as a way to
enrich this special Year of
Mercy. Join us as we bring
the Gospel message beyond
our church walls in service,
kinship, and justice.
Most holy Mary, Mother of Goodness, Mother of Mercy. You are constantly nurturing our souls to develop our inner Christ. You appear before us to nourish the God flame within each of us, You encourage us and teach us to walk our path of faith in beauty. Teach us to comfort those in pain, and to cultivate the virtues of mercy, grace, forgiveness and love. As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may we feel the light of Your presence, and that of your Son. On a Mission of
And Mercy
Last September, at the beginning of our Partners/BluePrints/Foundations year, we dove
right into Pope Francis’ Year of Mercy. We began to think about the Corporal and Spiritual
Works of Mercy.
Pope Francis reminds us that we are called to be missionaries, called to be witnesses of faith,
witnesses of joy… He tells us that Mercy grows when we love as Christ showed us. Mission
is the perfect way!
Our continued hope is that through your experiences here at Old St. Patrick’s and with our
Family Ministry Department, you have experienced the many variances and dimensions of
family. We hope that you have challenged yourself to do what Jesus did, and to embark on a
mission of love and mercy..
We are most grateful to all those who helped in that effort -- especially to the following
volunteers who gave so much of their time, talents, and creativity in teaching or providing
services for our children and for helping us to share the gift of love and friendship with one
another.
I’d like to take just a minute to thank the following people who served us this year as
Partners Catechists, Foundations Leaders and Family Advisory Board Members.

"Praying with Body and Soul: Movement as Prayer"
with Susan M. Pudelek, M. Div.
There are many ways to pray! Movement is a language of the soul that can express deep longings of the heart without
words. In this program we’ll explore the body as a center of prayer. Integrating mind, body and spirit, we’ll honor
the sacredness of the human body, learn how to read Scripture through awareness of the body, explore movement,
meditation including postures and gestures used at mass, and learn to “dance on behalf of” as a method of
intercessory prayer and praise.
Susan M. Pudelek, M. Div., is Director of Pilgrimage Ministry at the Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii where she creates
programs of spiritual support and is a part of the pastoral staff. She is a graduate of Catholic Theological Union
where she earned the M. DIV. with a concentration in Word and Worship. She is also a liturgical dancer, actor and
singer. Susan has led programs in movement prayer and danced in liturgies locally, nationally and internationally for
many years including several tours of the Holy Land.

Sundays, as well as for holidays and holy days of
obligation. It would be most appreciative if you would
give us 5 days of advance notice. To request access to
a sign language interpreter at Mass, please contact Katie Kearns
at 312.831.9372, or katiek@oldstpats.org.
