“W
hoever loves me will keep my word,” says Jesus. “Whoever does not love me will not keep my word.” These statements
should be of no surprise to us. They stand to reason.
Jesus had lived, taught, inspired, healed, risen, appeared, and was now preparing for the Ascension. It stands to reason that the eye
witnesses would be men of great conviction and love for Christ; ever ready to keep His words. And so, the question became: what were
the disciples going to do? Would they remain faithful? Would they follow-through? Would they keep the Lord’s words, and help others
to do the same? These are questions that surely apply to us, as well. Now that we have been counted among the baptized, now that we
have been anointed with the Spirit and fed with the Bread of Life, now that we have been instructed and assisted in our journey of faith
by the ministering Church, what are we going to do about it? As for the Apostles, so now for us, it’s really a question of conviction and
loyalty. “Whoever loves me will keep my words.”
Our world would have been very different had the Apostles not followed-through on Jesus’ words. Sorry, indeed, it would be if we,
ourselves, who have been given so much, were not to follow-through for Christ. Conviction and loyalty flow forth from love. “Whoever
loves me will keep my word,” says the Lord. Do we really love the Lord at the core of our being? Do we, therefore, keep his words?
Our modern world thirsts for the witness of men and women who, out of love for Christ, authentically keep his words. Without the
life-giving word of Christ, and the lived witness of his followers, whose lives are enriched and made different because of their love of the
Lord, our contemporary world, which is becoming more and more secular, more and more commercial, will increasingly run the risk of
a mere cultural Christianity, a cultural Catholicism. Perhaps a religiosity that is even devoid of the words and meaning of Christ.
I met someone the other day at a restaurant. He was a waiter who attended to my table, as I had lunch with a friend. The waiter
was wearing a necklace, which had a crucifix attached to it. My friend said to the waiter, “I see you are Christian.” The waiter didn’t
understand what my friend was talking about. So my friend then followed-up, “I notice the cross you are wearing around your neck.” To
our astonishment the waiter said, “Oh, that? That’s just jewelry. I am not a religious person.” My friend said, “Really? Why not? You
should consider it.” My friend and I later lamented how our culture has many of the trappings of Christianity, as if the faith were an
ancient event of no modern import. Sadly, it makes me wonder, “is this what 2,000 years of Christianity has done: merely becoming
jewelry?” Surely our love for the Lord is more valuable than that! What can we, as church, do better, to manifest our love for Christ and
keep his words? Indeed, we must bring Christ to the world, manifest our faith, and make known his love to all. Bring Christ to the
world, showing that we are his by the way we live. It is a witness that is sure to draw.
Yes. Our contemporary world surely needs more men and women who bear witness to Jesus Christ and his words. This
happens when we are sincerely motivated by love for Christ and the fulfillment of his words, allowing them to shape our daily lives
and our decision-making. May our convictions and loyalty be of no surprise to anyone.
“E
¿Iban a permanecer fieles?

POPE FRANCIS - @PONTIFEX
“The royal road to peace is to
see others not as enemies to
be opposed but as brothers
and sisters to be embraced.”
May the peoples praise you, O God;
may all the peoples praise you!
— Psalm 67:6
Father Alex McCullough, soon to be a newly
ordained priest for the Archdiocese of
Cincinnati, Ohio will be coming to Little Flower
to celebrate his first Spanish Masses on the
weekend of June 5th. As you may recall, he spent
two summers with us, learning Spanish by
participating in the Spanish summer camp,
as well as weekly Spanish Masses, weddings,
funerals, and Baptisms. He is thrilled to be able
to come back and celebrate Spanish Masses at
the parish that helped him in so many ways.
Welcome Father Alex!

Oh Dios, que te alaben los pueblos,
que todos los pueblos te alaben.
— Salmo 67 (66):6
S

Continuing our bi-annual custom, on May 2nd at 7:30pm, we will have an outdoor candlelight
international rosary ceremony in honor of the Blessed Mother at the Marian Grotto of the
Immaculate Conception on the rectory house lawn. The prayer service, done during the Marian
month of May, will be followed by a reception on the carport patio. All members of the parish,
families with children, and ministry groups are welcome. We will pray for our parish as we
continue to celebrate the 90th anniversary.
We will be having a parish yard sale on Saturday, June 11th, from 9:00am to 1:00pm at the
parking lot across from the parish office. All are welcome to peruse the items. As the saying
goes, “one person’s trash is another person’s treasure.” Anyone who would like to rent a
space to market and sell their own items can do so by calling Jorge Perez at our
Advancement Office, 305-446-9950. Limited spaces will be available for $10.
Father Davis, our Pastor and former Director of
Liturgy at two seminaries, will be offering an adult
education opportunity in June, a four-session
instructional module, which will explore the historical
beginnings of the Catholic liturgical and sacramental
tradition. This primer on liturgical history is based on
the course that he taught seminarians as they
prepared for the priesthood. Available for the first 16
people who sign up, the power-point mini-course will
take place on four consecutive Wednesday evenings
beginning on June 8th, from 7:30pm to 9:00pm, at the
second floor conference room in the Parish Office.
To reserve your seat, free of charge, call Maria Elena
Chialastri to get your name on the list. There’s only 16
seats in the conference/media room!
305-446-9950, ext. 306.
Father Davis will be leading our second “spiritual
field trip” to visit two archdiocesan locations of the
Jubilee Year “Holy Doors” on Thursday, September
1st. The details have just been confirmed. We will
leave Little Flower at 8:30am, arriving St Anthony’s
Church in Fort Lauderdale at 10:15am. We will be
greeted by the Pastor, enter through the Holy Door,
take a brief tour, and be on our way to our next stop.
Then we will go to Our Lady of Mercy Church
in Deerfield Beach. We will arrive at 11:45am,
be greeted by the Pastor, enter through the Holy
Door. Celebrate Mass, and have a catered lunch by a
chef from the parish. We will return to Little Flower
by 2:45pm. We can only accommodate the first
50 people who sign-up. Tickets will be $49.95 for the
day trip excursion. Call Jorge Perez at our
Advancement Office, to get your name on the list.
305-446-9950, ext. 318.
Have you ever wanted to go to the Holy Land? Our next international pilgrimage trip to Israel is scheduled for
March 10-19, 2017. Designed by the nationally renowned Catholic Travel Centre from California, we will embark
upon a ten-day spiritual journey, entitled “A Lenten Retreat with Father Davis in the Holy Land.” It will be a
particularly awesome way to journey through Lent and prepare for Easter 2017. Planning, of course, takes time.
A formal program will soon be announced. Only 50 seats will be available. Bethlehem, Nazareth, Carmel,
Caesaria, Cana, Jerusalem, Jericho, and the Dead Sea will be among the highlights. Mass at the Church of the
Holy Sepulcher too! Contact Father Davis to get your name on the mailing list. 305-446-9950, ext.301.
BISHOP BALDACCHINO VISITS COTLF
The Auxiliary Bishop of Miami, the
Most Reverend Peter Baldacchino,
was on hand this week to preside
at the children’s Mass for Saint
Theresa School this past Wednesday.
He will soon be here at the parish
again for our Spring Confirmation
ceremony on Wednesday evening,
May 10th, at 7:00pm. All are welcome.
Mount Saint Mary’s Seminary in Cincinnati will be
sending two seminarians to our parish this summer to live
in residence and help out at Spanish liturgies, as they do a
ten-week volunteer pastoral care experience at nearby
Mercy Hospital. Christian Cone-Lombarte and Ambrose
Dobrozsi will be here to develop their skills in pastoral
Spanish and ministry in a Latin-American context.
It’s another way that Little Flower is assisting the needs of
the broader Church to the glory of God.
As we inaugurate this year’s Fortnight of Prayer for Religious Freedom initiative (June 18 thru July 2), our parish has
been selected to be the host site for public veneration of the RELICS of the famous martyrs, Saint Thomas More and
Saint John Fisher. The relics will be at our parish for nearly 24 hours, accompanied by the Sisters of the Pierced Hearts
of Jesus and Mary. The arrival of the relics and the official start of the Fortnight of Prayer will be presided over at the
5:00pm Vigil Mass on Saturday, June 18th. All are welcome. More information to come.
Join us in honoring America at our annual Patriotic Prayer Service on Thursday, June 30th, at 7:30pm in church.
As part of the annual Fortnight of Prayer for Freedom, replete with hymns that will engender love of nation,
sung by our parish choir, the 45-minute para-liturgical service will include readings as well as candle-light
intercessory prayer. The event will be followed by a social in Comber Hall. All are welcome.
SPONSORSHIP AVAILABLE FOR THE
90TH ANNIVERSARY CHALICE
Sacred vessels are of great importance to the
liturgical life of any parish. They are made of
precious metals and are hand-crafted so as to last
for many years. As we prepare for our parish’s
90th anniversary liturgy to be held this Fall on
October 17th, we’d like to purchase a beautiful
chalice and paten which will mark the occasion
and serve for years to come, holding the precious
Body and Blood of Christ for the life of our
people. If you would be interested in contributing
towards or sponsoring this chalice and paten,
memorializations are available. The total cost of
the personally commissioned initiative from an
artisan in Spain will be approximately $13,000.
For more information, contact Father Davis or
the Advancement Office, 305-446-9950.
Considering all the streaks, stains, cracks,
plaster damage, and paint chips that have
been increasingly so evident on the exterior
of our church, it has been decided that is
needs a make-over and a fresh paint job.
Bids have been acquired. Archdiocesan
permissions have been secured. Hopefully
all will be done in time for the 90th
anniversary liturgy on October 17th. Almost
all of the fundraising has already been done
for this expensive project. We need
approximately $10,000 more to reach the
project goal. Sponsorships are welcome.
Please contact Father Davis or our parish
Advancement Office, 305-446-9950.
