Portion Control
Practice portion control — usually a morning
and evening meal, carefully measured. A high protein,
low carb diet with the right amount of calories for
weight loss, controlled through the portions you
feed, is what will take the weight off your Berner.
Use the right measuring tools to portion out
your pet’s meals. Grabbing what ever is convenient,
like a coffee mug or a soup spoon, will not allow you to
measure the portions correctly. Use standard cooking
and baking measuring tools.
The key to keeping your berner nutritionally fit at
the cellular level is with a high protein, moisture rich
diet fed in controlled portions, and augmented with
physical activity. Always consult your veterinarian
regarding any significant change in weight, diet and
exercise for your dog.

Factor treats you feed your pet into the daily
calorie plan. Keep in mind pre-packaged commercial
treats are a primary reason for excess weight in many
pets. Check the labels... These snacks are loaded with
carbs, sugar and fat and are specifically designed to
create intense cravings in your dog.
Use smaller feeding bowls to serve the new
smaller portions of food. From a psychological perspective, this may prevent you from piling on additional
food because the bigger bowl looks ‘too empty.’

BERNER, INC. HAS QUINTS!

A
week before the Christmas holiday, Berner,
Inc. was alerted to the plight of five Berners
who had been rescued from an abuse/neglect
situation. The five girls range in age from two
to five. They were found almost starved in an
unheated house with no water and one bag of food
scattered on the floor. They had parasites, ear
infections, worms and heavily scaled teeth. They
were filthy and matted. The dogs were frightened but
soon began to show their true Berner spirit when they
opened up to their rescuers and accepted love and care.
They were named Bertha, Summer, Gabby, Lucy and
Nirvana by their rescuers.

the NEADS
Puppy Program
in August.

was impeccable.
An hour before
I was to return Miller for the last time, Anya called to see if
we could foster a 2.5 year old BMDCNV Rescue, “Stanley”
for a short two week period. That day, I had a teary good bye
with Miller at 2:00 and then was off to pick Stanley up at 3:00.
Stanley had come into the BMDCA Rescue Program by the
assistance of a club member and pilot, Kelly Mecartney, who
flew him up from Florida to Massachusetts.
We “failed” fostering Stanley and wound upon adopting
him. All we can say is how grateful we are for this failure!
Stanley has served as a wonderful foster brother for many
BMDCNV/Berner Inc foster dogs (we have kind of lost count
of exactly how many) who have lived with us for a span of
anywhere from a weekend to six months. Almost exactly
seven years after Stanley came to us, we “failed” fostering
again with Berner Inc Rescue, Chloe, who we adopted.
I work at an educational collaborative as an occupational
therapist and therapy service coordinator. Recently at work,
I have been involved in developing policies for and starting
an animal assisted therapy and activity program in schoolbased settings.

I
live near Myles Standish State Forest in Plymouth, MA
with my husband, Jerry. We share our lives with Stanley an
11 year old BMD, Chloe a 3 year old BMD, Bright, a 4 year
old English Shepherd, and Kit’N a 3 year domestic short hair
cat. We also have a small flock of chickens.
I have been a BMDCNV member since 1996 and also
served on the BMDCNV Board of Directors for a couple of
terms. I became a board member of Berner Inc soon after
the BMDCNV voted to spin off its rescue and education
programs into a separate 501(c)(3) corporation in 2008. In
addition to fostering, I have been involved in assisting with
review of adoptive home applications and rescue dog intakes,
developing resources for foster and adoptive homes, home
visits, rescue dog transport and Berner Inc education events
at BMDCNV Fun days.
Jerry and I brought our first Bernese Mountain Dog puppy,
Annie, home on the first day of Spring in March of 1996.
We were newbies to puppy training. At the time, we had
a seven year old Catahoula mix, Rufous, who came to stay
with us while a family member went on vacation. Rufous
loved “Camp Flaherty” and being Jerry’s hiking companion
so much that he never left and lived until the ripe old age of
nearly 17 years old.
Shortly after we lost Annie in 2004, we signed up to be a
weekend puppy raiser for the NEADS Prison Pup Partnership
Program that trains service dogs for people who are deaf or
disabled. I corresponded weekly with a NEADS trainer about
the puppy’s, (Miller, a Collie) progress and received training
plan recommendations. Even though Miller was only with us
on weekends we grew to love him and it was hard to imagine
him moving on to his formal training program and eventual
adoption. We made a point to focus on the big picture that
Miller would be helping someone truly in need.

For this Clinic: Pre-sedation bloodwork is highly recommended to be done with your primary vet shortly prior to the
clinic. Sedative is butorphanol/dexdomitor which will have
the dogs heavily sedated for the xrays, then given the reversal
dose where they can walk out of the office within a short time.
