President’s Message
Spring is upon us and it’s fabulous. I wish all of our riding and showing could take place in weather like this all of the time. By the time you read this, we’ll have had our first rescheduled Spring Schooling Show at Toad Hollow, which we had to reschedule from the 24th of April to the 1st of May due to low rider turnout caused by a variety of reasons. It is important for us to make sure that we get together with other groups in the area and schedule the shows and events to ensure the best participation for us all. I’m excited to report that we have filled our Fundraising Clinic with Allison Brock which is on the weekend of the 19th and 20th of June at Toad Hollow Farm. We have 9 riders scheduled per day and the clinic will be kicked off with a pre‐clinic seminar on Friday the 18th. Auditors are welcome at $10 per day for Adults and free of charge for Juniors. All auditing proceeds and 50% of the clinic proceeds will be donated by Allison to our Chapter for the purchase of a new “ring” to be used at future licensed and schooling shows. We are actively looking for class and high score sponsors for our own licensed show as well as advertisers for our program. If you personally or someone you know might be interested in this opportunity, please contact me at gardy@gardybloemers.com so that I can send you more information. Obtaining sponsorships and advertisers will count towards your volunteer requirements! As you will notice, our new newsletter team, Eliza Temeles and Krister Swartz, have been improving our newsletter and are trying to feature our members, their horses and accomplishments more and more. If you have anything you’d like to share, please do so! For those of you showing actively during the month of May, good luck! I’m looking forward to seeing you all around and about. VADA-CH April Board Meeting Minutes
Submitted by Gardy Bloemers The March minutes were approved. Currently we have $6,246.18 in our bank account. The only expenses outstanding are those for the newsletter which GB must send to Sherri. We have a total of 77 members to date which is far less than our end of year member count for 2009 of 117. Gardy agreed to send out a reminder to all 2009 members who have not yet renewed for this year. We need to promote sponsorship and advertising opportunities for our Labor Day Twin Shows. Nancy reported via email that everything is moving along according to plan. All Certificates of Insurance have been sent out to the USEF, USDF and Commonwealth Park. All judges are in place as well. Gardy needs to follow up with Tigger to discuss sponsorship further and start to reach out to the usual vendors and businesses that support us with our annual show. In addition she needs to put together information to share with all interested parties regarding this opportunity. Potential advertisers and sponsors include VTO Saddlery, Dover Saddlery, Christina from Stuebben, Cowboy Magic, Blue Ridge Trailers and County Saddlery. Gardy reported that the Allison Brock Clinic was full. We have 8 riders booked of which one will be a junior who is fully sponsored for the two day clinic. There may be the possibility of including the two wait‐listed riders in the clinic. Gardy will follow up with Ame Hellman to determine if this is possible. (Subsequent to the meeting, Ame informed me that this was and so we now have ten riders booked in the clinic). Carter Bass reported that Chris Hickey did let her know that he would not be available on the proposed clinic dates in July of this year. Carter agreed to go back to him to find out when he might be available. At the same time, Carter will investigate the following alternatives for both this year and next year. They include Linda Sommers, Lendon Gray, George Williams and Sue Madden Mandes and Jane Weatherwax. The intent is to hold our 2011 Chapter Grant Clinic in March. Gardy identified that Blue Ridge Trailers was interested to sponsor our three schooling shows in 2011. We agreed that this was an excellent proposal and that we would do so as follows: 2011 Schooling Shows sponsored by Blue Ridge Trailers. Gardy will revert to Blue Ridge with a proposed sponsorship fee of $500. The issue was raised by Nancy Lowey via email that we should investigate the possibility of alleviating Tina of her website responsibilities. Gardy suggested she would follow up with Eliza Temeles to find out if she would be interested to take over this responsibility. Our next meeting will be held on the 10th of May at 7pm at Topeka’s. Robin Silke reports that Cash Advance, owned by Carolyn Maki and ridden by Robin, was 3rd with American Hanoverian Society at Training Level and 23rd out of all the horses in the country in 2009. There was quite a VADA‐CH presence at the March Magic Dressage show down in N.C. Anne Aloi, Martha Mellish, Pati Pierucci, April Shultz, and Kim Schmidt all won classes. And Anne, April, and Pati all brought home scores of 70% or over!  April Shultz and Halifax Middelsom won their Training 3 class with a 




win both of her Second 3 classes with scores of 69.302% and 65.349% Anne Aloi and Doc Holliday rode to victory in Third 3 with a 67.907% and in Third 1 with a 70% Martha Mellish and Wiseman won their class with a 64.865% at Second 2 Kim Schmidt and Portobello scored a 69.211% to win Intermediate 1 Pati Pierucci and Liberache won Third 2 with a 63.590% while Pati also took home the blue with Dolfi (owned by Joanne Balling) with a score of 71.429% in First 3. Congratulations also to Melyni Worth for showing PSG for the first time at March Madness. The Dressage Tail: Trimming the Dock
By Miranda Ottewell The tail of a dressage horse is an extension of the spine, and the way it swings reflects a soft, swinging back. Many hunters highlight the hindquarters and achieve a clean look by braiding the tail along the length of the dock, but this can make the tail stiff, and for dressage you want it to have maximum freedom to move. When the horse is working well, its tail is usually held slightly away from its body in a soft arch – interestingly, this carriage of the tail often mirrors the muscle tone of the back and hindquarters, so that a lower‐level horse might carry its tail closer to the body than a highly toned upper‐level horse. Shaping the tail shows off a lovely natural carriage by revealing the line of the dock. There are three ways to shape the dock: by pulling, by clipping, and with scissors. Pulling seems equally unpleasant for horse and human, so I’ve never done that. Clipping can work well but is potentially disastrous—one slip, and the tail will take a year to recover. I use clippers only on a quiet horse, and only to neaten up a slightly grown‐out tail that had already been shaped with scissors. Scissors take longer, but it isn’t so easy to make a mistake. The goal is to remove the short hairs that stick out or hang down on the side of the dock, to achieve a tail that is narrower at the top and becomes fuller lower down. In general, trimming to around the point of the buttocks works well, but this can be adjusted to suit the individual horse. A heavier horse can look good with a thicker tail just neatened at the top, while a narrower trim that goes farther down suits a narrower horse. How to do it: Stand to the side, and work on one side at a time. Hold the scissors pointing up, angled so they lie flat along the skin. Start from the point of the Before and after: Our model is Arthur buttocks and trim up to the base of the tail in a thin strip along the bottom of the McBride, a young Irish sport horse who’s just arrived at Manor Minor after a year living in dock, then work up onto the side so that you end up with a half‐moon shape, a field. He’s trimmed quite conservatively narrower at the base and top. Pull the short side hairs outward and trim them so here, since there was so much to take off. that you have a natural‐looking line along the side, blended into the top hairs. Some tips:  Trim the tail a week or two before a show, so it has a chance to grow out in case you cut a little too close.  Stand back and check the shape often, especially when you’re doing the second side and want the two sides symmetrical. Better too little than too much!  Use blunt‐tipped scissors (some types of bandage scissors work well). You don’t want to poke a restless horse in the rear with a sharp point!  Start with a well‐brushed tail. I like to drizzle a little Cowboy Magic on my brush.  Trim only the side hairs! You should see the trimmed area only from the side. If short top hairs stick out, damping the tail and then wrapping it with a tail bandage will make it sleeker before a show. 4

I also just got another Connemara cross, so we'll see what I end up doing with him. I have a Pony Club (C2) and eventer background but have become more interested in dressage and freestyle lately. Q. What do you do for a living? Or are you in school? A. I'm a 7th‐grader at St. Anne's–Belfield. Q. What are you reading now? A. To Kill a Mockingbird. Q. What's on your iPod? A. Well, I mainly use it to practice my freestyle. I'm using a lot of Disney music. For walk, "When You Wish Upon A Star"; trot, "I've Got No Strings" (both from Pinocchio), and the Muppet theme song for the canter. Q. What's your favorite food? A. Pizza. Q. Paris or Jamaica? A. VADA Board Meeting Minutes:
April 19, 2010
Submitted by Alison Douglas Members present: Alison Douglas (Central), Tina Longaker (Charlottesville), Beth Rippel (SVDA), Gardy Bloemers (Charlottesville), Shelly King (NOVA), Jane Palmer (ShenVADA), Tracey Smith‐Oliver (SWAVDA), Robyn Nunnally (SVDA), Lea Ann Hanson (Central), Catherine Kern (Charlottesville), Anne Draine (Central/Nevada), Rachel Gannaway (Fredericksburg) Meeting was called to order at 8:00 pm. and the minutes from the last meeting were emailed to everyone and approved as printed. Treasurer’s Report‐ Jessie Ginsburg sent an update via email. Combined balances from all accounts ‐ $112,877.38. The data for the tax returns is being gathered and Jessie will take it to the accountant. They will file an extension if necessary. Funds earned by chapter for the silent auction were: Central $177, Charlottesville $744, Fredericksburg $118, Nevada $100, NOVA $909, ShenVADA $242, SVDA $127, and SWVADA $50. These are much lower numbers than in past years. The board appointed a financial committee that will be chaired by Jessie. Rachel Gannaway, Gardy Bloemers, and Tina make up the rest of the committee. The committee is tasked to look at the club’s finances and make recommendations to the board regarding how we can improve the silent auction, other fundraising activities (i.e. a Stallion auction on‐line at a different time of year), increasing chapter grant funds, and starting a separate “rainy day” fund. Alison Douglas made the motion to increase the Chapter Grants for 2010 from $400, $600, and $700 to $600, $800, and $900. The motion was seconded by Rachel Gannaway and Shelli King and passed unanimously. Any increase for future years goes to the finance committee for further review. Membership Report‐ Beth Rippel reports that we have 723 members as of this date. Tina reminded the board that USDF is increasing its membership fees for 2011 and that the chapters need to be aware and look to increase their fees accordingly. Feedback from the annual banquet was that the room was better, food okay but getting boring, Nancy did a wonderful job as auctioneer and it was disappointing that the wireless microphone didn’t work. There was some feedback from members that they didn’t know to send a picture of their horse for the wonderful plates that Nancy Lindamood does, but the board consensus was that the information was out there. Nancy will also do additional plates on an individual basis. Tina wanted everyone to know that the scarves given as President and Newsletter Editor awards were from “Moxie” and remind members that we get a discount (info is on our website). 6

VADA Board Meeting Minutes, con’t… Chapter Reports  ShenVADA‐ Their Kassie Barteau clinic was wonderful. They had 18 riders and she rode the horses before the rider did. The chapter used two years worth of grants to help fund this clinic and it was especially beneficial to several junior riders.  Central‐ Their first 2 day licensed show will be May 15‐16 at the new Meadow Event Park in Doswell. Lea Ann Hanson reported that she has checked out the footing and is pleased with it. Anne Draine reported that the schooling show run by and as a fund raiser for the juniors was good and that there is a fix‐a‐test clinic Saturday April 24th with Nikki Vogel.  Charlottesville‐ Their twin shows in connection with the Adult Team will be September 4th and 5th in Culpepper. Nancy Lowey reported via email that the prize list is on the Region 1 website and in the Omnibus. Culpepper has new concrete wash areas, has re‐graded their roads, and is building a new large pavilion. The sponsorship info has been sent out and chapters are encouraged to help with the fundraising efforts. Please make sure it gets in chapter newsletters. Nancy is the volunteer coordinator (remember that this counts for VADA awards), Robin Dannels is doing the program, and Molly Armentrout will be the stable manager.  Fredericksburg‐ They had a successful clinic with Patrick Tigchelaar. Their schooling show on May 9th has a change of venue to Westwood Farm and their licensed show will be at Rosemont.  NOVA‐ Their April show was full and their June show will be an Eastern Qualifying Finals for Young Horses, making it a level 4 show. Tina will be the secretary. It will be a three day show, but Friday will only be young horse classes. They’ve had one clinic (3 in 1 clinic) that had low entries, but two successful schooling shows. In July, they will have a sport horse versatility clinic at Frying Pan Park.  NEVADA‐ Their 4‐18 schooling show was cancelled due to low entries and they will have another on May 2nd.  SVDA‐ The two schooling shows they’ve had so far were full. They are having a licensed show May 2nd in Williamsburg. Beth reported that entries are low so far. The show is offering Opportunity Classes.  SWAVDA‐ Their fix‐a‐test clinic in April had 13 rides and their schooling show on April 17th had 51 rides. They are having another schooling show on May 29th. More discussion on the Adult Team Competition was held. VADA will do a High Score Award that excludes Intro as the “Edgar” does not, and usually ends up going to an Intro Team. Regarding an equitable way to split expenses, Tina and Gardy will work together. There is no “team fee”, the class fees substitute for that. The Charlottesville Chapter has paid for the insurance and facility. The premise is that expenses will be proportioned out based on how many rides were for the team competition vs. the licensed show. Tina also noted that the prize list for the Adult Team will be an addendum to the licensed shows. 7

2010 BLM’s‐ Tina reported that this is now a separate organization, CBLM, LLC. There was some discussion regarding how much chapter licensed shows pay for the BLM qualifiers‐ its $35. The sweatshirts will be maroon this year. 2011 GAIG’s‐ VADA won the show by a landslide. NJ got the 2011 BLM show and VADA voted for them on the premise that we want to ensure NC has a successful championship show before granting them another one. Donations for the VA Horse Center‐ Tina would like our donation to fund replacing the footing in the stalls but that is not listed as one of their campaigns. She recommends we donate $5000. This is another item that can be given to the finance committee. Purple Book‐ Shelli King discussed the fact that it is very expensive to produce and perhaps we should only use it more as a directory of members and put the rest of the information on our website. After discussing that many members like the “hard copy” of information and it is also a marketing tool, it was decided that board reps should take this topic back to the chapters for recommendations. April 2‐3 2011 Clinic‐ The following names were suggested Jan Brink, Sue Blinks, Monica Theodoresceu and Lilo Fore. Headsets‐ Beth Rippel will provide a quote to Tina on price. They need to be one band, and one has to be a transmitter. We no longer have access to the radios we had been borrowing. Headsets are used during some of the freestyle classes at the championship shows to allow a commentator for the audience. VADA Radios‐ Chapters are able to rent them for shows by sending Beth Rippel $100 deposit. Website‐ Tina sent updates to Wendy today. Chapters need to double check that the information is correct, especially email addresses. Information should be sent to Tina and not Wendy directly. Gardy would like the meeting minutes on the website as well. The next board meeting will be Wednesday, May 19th and will also be via teleconference. Meeting was adjourned at 9:37 pm. 8

Please note there was a typo on the VADA‐CH Schooling Show prize list. The Cedar Creek schooling show will be on Saturday, June 12th – not Sunday as originally listed. Nancy Lowey passed along news of new upgrades at the Commonwealth Park show grounds in advance of our September USEF show and the Adult Team Competition: 1. New concrete wash racks have been installed. 2. New footing in Hunter Ring 1 next to the Pavillion. 3. By July 1, there will be a new covered Master Pavillion installed where the other older and decrepit Pavillion was(it was torn down).We will not need to order a tent this year!! 4. All roads and parking areas have been re‐graded including the barn areas. 5. Unfortunately the barns have had no major changes but they are looking to tear those down next year and re‐install others.
