The World’s Finest Panama Hat
Where the real Panama Hat comes from.
The Panama Hat has its roots in the Inca Empire. The Spanish arrived to Ecuador and
found the local people wearing these amazing hats made out of a natural straws that
they named “toquilla” straws. After some years the hat got known in other countries,
and the main trade point was Panama.
But what really gave the name of “Panama Hat” is the fact that Theodore Roosevelt
was wearing this hat at the opening of the Panama Canal in 1913, the name was then
spread by the medias as “Panama Hat”.
The Art behind this unique piece
The manufacturing of a Panama Hat can be considered as an art, every hat is unique.
The Panama Hat is hand woven, and the knowledge of the weaving is handed down
from generation to generation.
The micro-climate in the Pacific coast of Ecuador is the ideal place for the growing of
the plant with the scientific name of Carludovica Palmata, the local people ensure the
well-tended plantations and then a manual process of treatment of the leaves starts.
The leaves are cooked and then dried under the equatorial sun's rays.
The fibres are then shipped to the two famous weaving cities of Cuenca and
Montecristi, where the know how of the Panama Hat is a question of having it in the
blood. The all process is manual, for the Finest Panama Hats the weaving can go up
to five months.
A word about the country
Ecuador
Diversity is the word that can describe the best this wonderful country of South
America. Galapagos Island, the Pacific coast, the Andes mountains and the Amazonian
forest. From the cold wind of the glaciers to the tropical humidity of the jungle.
Amerindians, Europeans, Africans and Asians came to the land and as a result the
Ecuadorians are the best example of diversity.
The gold of the Incas
In 1532 the Spanish Conquistador, Francisco Pizarro began his conquest of the Inca
Empire. Very fast he had Atahualpa, The Emperor, as his hostage, but in exchange of his
freedom, The Emperor promised to fill a room with gold. Before the room could be filled
with gold, Atahualpa was garrotted and then burned.
The legend holds that the Inca general Rumiñahui was on his way with an estimated 750
tons of worked gold for the ransom when he learned that Atahualpa had been murdered.
The furious general, returned to a mountainous region of Ecuador called the Llanganates,
where he hide the gold. When Ruminahui was captured by the Spanish, he was tortured
but he never revealed the location of the treasure.
Since colonial times, famous explorers and treasure-hunters have launched numerous
expeditions in an effort to find the legendary treasure, but without success.
