It all Starts With a Puppy, and You
Canine Companions donors, volunteers, puppy raisers, breeder caretakers
and graduates banded together to form chapters, host DogFest Walk
‘n Roll events and more in 2014. What did this collaboration all lead to?
Record-breaking assistance dog placements and fundraising success!
We are pleased and proud to report that in 2014, we matched 289
assistance dogs with people with disabilities, our professional trainers
made over 950 in-person visits with current graduate teams as part of our
support program, and our community helped us raise over $22 million.
We also celebrated 2014 with the success of new collaborations with
other organizations. We began construction on our new South Central
Training Center, named the Baylor Scott & White Health Kinkeade Campus,
thanks to our partnership with the non-profit Texas healthcare system and
Judge Ed Kinkeade. We also were selected and began training dogs for a
research study by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to determine
the benefits of canine support for veterans with post-traumatic stress
disorder (PTSD).
2014 is a tough act to follow. We appreciate former CEO Corey Hudson
and previous Board Chair Anne Gittinger who allowed us to step into our
new leadership roles at a time when Canine Companions is in the best
shape it has ever been, and poised for growth.
Additionally, Paul was named president of Assistance Dogs International
to guide the coalition that provides education about assistance dogs,
advocates for the legal rights of people with disabilities partnered with
assistance dogs, and sets standards and guidelines for assistance dog
training.
The list of successes at Canine Companions is long, and is the direct
result of the hard work and generosity of the entire Canine Companions
community. In the pages that follow, you’ll read about 2014 highlights
and some of the people who helped make 2014 a banner year.
We’re excited to be a part of the long-term growth at Canine Companions
and look forward to continuing to band together to help build our programs
and services for people with disabilities.

Expanding Help for
Veterans With PTSD
With the increase in military veterans returning from combat with
post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a new study is underway to see if
a service dog or an emotional support dog can help. Canine Companions
for Independence was selected as a contractor to furnish dogs for a study
being performed by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to determine
the potential benefits of canine support for veterans with PTSD.
“Canine Companions is always at the forefront of canine assistance
and therapy,” states Paul Mundell, CEO of Canine Companions. “This
study is an opportunity to support our veterans and provide insight into
the potential benefits of a highly trained assistance dog for individuals
living with PTSD.”
Canine Companions has placed assistance dogs with 118 wounded or
disabled veterans through its Wounded Veterans Initiative, and now is
one of three organizations awarded contracts to provide quality dogs
for the VA study.
For the study, Canine Companions will be training dogs to complete five
specific tasks that will potentially help veterans with PTSD, in addition
to dozens of basic obedience commands and skills for public access.
Canine Companions will also be providing emotional support dogs as a
part of the research study.

Joe and Service Dog Ansel III
Isaac and Skilled Companion Kaylor
“I lost a piece of my soul and everything that defined
my very being—as a husband, a father, a friend and a
business partner,” explains Joe as he recounts his 2010
sailboat accident. “The accident left me a quadriplegic
without the ability to move or feel anything below my
neck. There was lots of mending to be done—both
physically and mentally.”
Joe attributes a lot of his recovery to Canine
Companions for Independence, thanks to Service
Dog Ansel. Joe and Ansel were matched together in
2012 free of charge. “Other than caring for Ansel and
providing follow-up reports, Canine Companions
asked for nothing in return for this gift I have been
given,” says Joe. “He has given me a renewed and
positive sense of self.”
Joe and his wife Denise have become very involved
with Canine Companions, joining the North Central
Region Board of Directors, becoming a top fundraiser in
the Columbus DogFest Walk ‘n Roll event, and working
tirelessly to develop a course of action that may result
in a new North Central Region campus.
Joe received the 2014 Jack Warnock Volunteer
Service Award, a national award that honors one volunteer annually who has exhibited significant dedication
to Canine Companions and its mission. “Contributing
to such a wonderful organization that revitalizes other
recipients’ lives is actually one of the most meaningful
and rewarding things I’ve done in my career and my
life,” explains Joe.
Kaylor jumped onto the bench and sat facing the
camera. His buddy, Isaac, watched as the lights flashed
with every photo taken.
Kaylor is a skilled companion dog that was matched
with Isaac free of charge in 2014.
Prior to receiving Skilled Companion Kaylor, Isaac
had overwhelming fear and anxiety and was unable
to even enter the room with all the big photography
lights. But after Kaylor showed Isaac how it was done,
Isaac was able to have his yearbook picture taken for
the first time.
“Isaac’s lack of social skills and the fact that he
is non-verbal and unable to make friends is what
pushed us to apply for an assistance dog,” explains
Dawn, Isaac’s mom. Isaac was diagnosed with severe
autism and cognitive delays. “Isaac’s developmental
pediatrician agreed that getting an assistance dog for
Isaac would be a good idea.”
Isaac, who uses an iPad to communicate, is already
engaging more with Kaylor by his side. “He is teaching
Kaylor to listen to commands from the voice on his
iPad, and Kaylor picks it up so quickly!” says Dawn.
“Having Kaylor has helped Isaac when interacting
with his peers. In the past, Isaac stayed 30 feet away
from anyone, covering his ears and never looking at
anyone, but Kaylor made Isaac visible.”
Dawn attributes the success of Isaac and Kaylor’s
partnership to Kaylor’s temperament, “Kaylor doesn’t
get overly excitable or get in Isaac’s face. He has the
perfect temperament. He is now my third child and
Isaac’s best friend.”

Hearing Dog Hazel is always working for Karen, whether
alerting Karen to her alarm clock, someone calling her
name or an emergency vehicle coming down the road.
“I don’t have to depend on someone to wake me
up. I am less dependent on my family because of my
hearing dog,” explains Karen. “When I am not wearing
my cochlear implants, I am 100% Deaf. People may
not realize I am Deaf, because I use my voice to speak.
When I’m in public, Hazel helps people realize I’m Deaf
and can’t hear them.”
Karen received her first hearing dog from Canine
Companions in 1991 and recently received her third
hearing dog, Hazel. “I keep coming back to Canine
Companions because I’m so impressed with the quality
of the dogs I’ve received. The staff are so friendly and
helpful. They’re always there if I need them,” says Karen.
Thanks to Canine Companions supporters, Karen
has received each of her hearing dogs free of charge.
“Canine Companions dogs love to work and want to
help. My dogs were trained to alert me to sounds that
are important to me. Those sounds become important
to them,” says Karen. “They are so eager to please and
to do their job.”
The U.S. Paralympic Sailing Team’s coach, Betsy Alison,
has a unique assistant—Canine Companions Facility
Dog Morrow. After observing the Paralympic sailors
with their pets, Betsy saw the potential that a team
dog could act as a stress reducer and psychological
motivator for athletes. She consulted with several
sports psychologists who agreed. In May 2007, Morrow
joined the sailing team.
Of the team’s nearly 20 disabled athletes, many
have spinal cord injuries and about half the members
use wheelchairs. “Morrow has been more of a physical
and emotional support to the athletes than anyone
anticipated,” shares Betsy. “Physically, Morrow picks
up out of reach items, carries athlete bags and gear,
and even assists with docking the boats by bringing
fenders to the sailors. Emotionally, Morrow has been
a training constant for the athletes who must often
travel away from home, leaving their support systems
to attend camps and competition.”
Thanks to his training at Canine Companions,
Morrow is a constant professional. He is unperturbed
by common sounds aboard the coach boat. Air horns,
whistles, wave action or shouted greetings from other
boats don’t distract him in the slightest.

One Team. Two Heroes.
In 2011, U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Brian Boone was on tour in Afghanistan
when he was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED). He was
lucky to survive, but lost his leg below the knee and sustained injuries
to his back.
During his recovery, he met a fellow wounded veteran with a Canine
Companions service dog. Brian realized the positive impact a service
dog could have on his back and his life. “I really needed a dog to help
pick things up. I struggle to bend over and knew a Canine Companions
service dog could save me from a lot of pain,” says Brian.
In September 2014, Brian was matched with Brindle, a yellow Labrador
and Golden Retriever cross, trained by Canine Companions and provided
entirely free of charge. Brian and Brindle were one of four teams matched
in the inaugural class at Canine Companions South Central Region.
“I felt an immediate connection with Brindle,” explains Brian. Brindle
is a character and adds a whole element of excitement to the Boone
household. Brian’s son, who has autism, loves Brindle. Brindle goes
everywhere with Brian and even helps by retrieving Brian’s’ prosthetic leg
or grabbing his own leash. He is attuned to Brian’s every need. “I didn’t
realize at first how much a dog would be able to help me, but he is so
well trained,” Brian says. “He has really changed my life.”

A cover photo on a Life magazine over 20 years ago captured Anne
Gittinger’s attention. “A one-page article inside that magazine warmed
my heart,” recalls Anne. “The magazine article motivated me to make a
small donation and the subsequent years of support just evolved.”
Anne and her late husband Wayne’s generosity of time and funds built
Gittinger Hall and Gittinger Park at the Northwest Training Center and
underwrote several Canine Companions galas year after year. Anne has
provided leadership on the national board since 1994.
“Wayne created the concept for Gittinger Park while waiting for me on
campus when I was in board meetings,” shares Anne. “I am most proud of
Gittinger Park and Gittinger Hall and what both of these projects provide
for everyone there, people and dogs.”
“It is not possible to list all we owe to Anne for her guidance and
leadership, but it’s clear that many of our accomplishments and growth
would not have happened without her,” says Paul Mundell, Canine
Companions CEO.
It has always been the matches between assistance dogs and people
with disabilities that have inspired Anne and kept her commitment to
Canine Companions strong. “The marriage between a dog and human
partner is priceless,” says Anne. “It makes that recipient’s life full, allowing
him or her to be more independent if possible. It allows for a fuller and
more meaningful life. The adage, ‘a dog is man’s best friend’ is true. The
union brings dedicated love and life enrichment, which is irreplaceable.”
“Listen to our stories, visit a campus and get to know the wonderful,
hard working staff,” says Anne. “You’ll realize that the work being
done enriches the lives of those in need in such a special way.”

“To me, being a Canine Companions puppy raiser can be simplified into
one thought: The more you give, the more you open yourself up to
receive,” says Erin.
Erin grew up in a household that included a pet toucan, six parrots, a
spider monkey, a squirrel, a three-toed sloth, two dogs, two kittens and
even a coatimundi, all living under one roof. She also has been able to live
in Europe, Central America and all over the United States, the advantage
of being a military brat and military wife. “Let’s just say my idea of ‘normal’
was compromised at a young age—in a good way!” laughs Erin.
Erin first heard about Canine Companions while living in Davis, California
in 2012. “After talking with my then 15-year-old daughter, we decided to
raise a puppy together. We thought it would be a great way to share a
really special experience with the end result, hopefully, being that we
could improve someone’s life.”
Erin loved watching Maggie grow and learn while raising their first
puppy, Luna V. “I was so proud of her; doing this to benefit someone she
hadn’t even met. Maggie is a better person because of it.”
Now raising their second puppy, Kastner, they will be sending Kastner
off to professional training at Canine Companions in August 2015. “I keep
telling Maggie, who is now 17-years-old and soon ready for college, that
I have to turn Kastner in and then a week later I have to turn her in too.
Surprisingly, she doesn’t like the phrase ‘turning in’ when I refer to her
going to college,” laughs Erin.
Erin knows it will be hard to say goodbye to Kastner, especially with
Maggie leaving soon afterwards, but then she remembers the moment of
handing over Luna’s leash at a Canine Companions graduation. “Seeing
the dog I raised standing proudly with her new partner, Steve, was worth
every bit of love, time and effort I put into raising her,” explains Erin. “It
was one of the greatest moments in my life.”
