Christopher Canon Convicted for Murder at
San Francisco’s Metreon in 2007
A teen convicted in May of seconddegree murder for the 2007 fatal
shooting of another teen in San
Francisco’s Metreon complex was
sentenced today to 49 years to life
in prison, prosecutors said. Christopher Canon was 15 when he shot
18-year-old Michael Price Jr., of
Oakland, at the Metreon at Fourth
and Mission streets on Nov. 11, 2007.
He was arrested nearby after the
shooting and was charged as an
adult.
Canon, who is now 19, was upset
that Price wasn’t moving quickly
enough down an escalator outside a video arcade at the complex,
prosecutors said. Canon’s attorney,
David Simerly, had argued Price
was the attacker and that Canon
shot him in self-defense. A mis-
trial was declared in the case last
November when a San Francisco
Superior Court jury deadlocked on
whether Canon should be convicted of first- or second-degree
murder.
Prosecutors retried the case with
a new jury, which declined to convict Canon of first-degree murder,
but found him guilty on May 31
of second-degree murder with an
enhancement for the use of a firearm. Following the verdict, Simerly
criticized the stiff sentencing
guidelines Canon was facing in the
case. “It’s nauseating that we have
a country that subjects a 15-yearold to that,” he said. “They do not
perceive situations the way adults
do.”

The San Jose Police Department is asking for the public’s
help in identifying the suspects in these photos. Detective
Brian Meeker reports that on July 23, 2011, an armed
robbery occurred at the Safeway Grocery Store at 179
Branham Lane. Three suspects entered the store and
allegedly concealed numerous bottles of alcohol and tried
to leave. The manager and a clerk confronted the males at
the exit. One of the suspect’s then pulled up his shirt an allegedly revealed a gun in his
waistband. All three suspects then fled the store with bottles of alcohol. The victims
saw the suspects get into a red 90’s Honda 4 door and a Mitsubishi type car with a fin
on the trunk. Subsequent investigation identified Richard Flores as one of the alleged
suspects. Flores has since been arrested but police still need to identify the other two
suspects. The suspects may be driving a red 1997 Honda Civic 4 door with California
license plate# 6RZS518.

The Campbell Police Department is asking for the public’s help to identify the suspect
in these photos. According to Detective Tom Rogers, this suspect has allegedly robbed
the same bank twice. He states that on August 17, 2011, this suspect and an accomplice
entered the Compass Bank located at 70 W. Hamilton Avenue and allegedly forced all
the bank employees to lay on the floor. They then allegedly had the teller place cash in
a bag and then both suspects fled the scene through the back doors and jumped over
a wall into the parking lot of Wesley Manor.

Era Quien Cobraba Narcocuotas A Varios Casinos
Fernando Larrazabal, alcalde de
Monterrey, fue uno de los primeros
funcionarios que ‘saltó’ a las pocas
horas de haberse registrado el tétrico
ataque en el Casino Royal, mismo que
ocurrió el pasado jueves en el municipio antes mencionado.
El alcalde Larrazabal ‘corrió’ a
varios medios de comunicación para
decir que él no tenía culpa de que el
Casino Royale siguiera funcionado a
pesar de varias irregularidades que
habían sido destapadas, ese jueves
se lavó las manos, y los días siguientes siguió dando declaraciones de
que su municipio luchaba contra los
negocios de apuestas que debían ser
clausurados.
Sin embargo un nuevo e importante escándalo empaña hoy al
polémico Fernando Larrazabal, el
Grupo Reforma publicó imágenes
del hermano del alcalde, en donde
realizaba labores de recolección monetaria en varios casinos de la ciudad
de Monterrey.
Manuel Jonás Larrazabal, fue captado por cámaras de seguridad de diversos casinos cuando recibía dinero
en efectivo, ya que en varias ocasiones amenazaba a dichos negocios de
apuestas con tener problemas con el
municipio de Monterrey. El hermano
de Larrazabal acudía con frecuencia
para exigir el derecho de piso, como lo
hacen grupos de la delincuencia organizada. En días anteriores, las autoridades de Nuevo León habían señalado que gracias a las investigaciones
se conoció la versión del personal del
Casino Royale, en donde decían que
el grupo de Los Zetas les cobraba una
cuota por dejar el negocio en paz, sin
embargo el encargado de recolectar
el dinero, era Manuel Jonás Larrazabal, como se observa en las imágenes
que se muestran.
Jonás, de 53 años, operaba siempre
de la misma manera: llegaba a un casino, se dirigía a una mesa de apuesta,
esperaba al encargado del establecimiento, recibía fajos de billetes, los
revisaba, y se retiraba.
Algunas fuentes confiables, señalaron que varios dueños de casinos
acudieron con las autoridades para
denunciar las extorsiones días antes
de que se registrara la masacre en el
Casino Royale.
En las grabaciones se observa también a Larrazabal en un estacionamiento de uno de los casinos, tranquilo y con el dinero en la mano sube a su
automóvil Nissan Sentra 2011 en color
gris, con placas SNP-3283.
Durante la mañana de hoy, Fernando Larrazabal, indicó que él no tiene
nada que ver con las acciones delictivas que realiza su hermano. “Primero
que nada los ciudadanos de Monterrey
eligieron a Fernando Larrazabal, de los
actos de mi hermano no me puedo yo
hacer responsable, le voy a pedir a la
Procuraduría que sea quien investigue
y si tiene alguna responsabilidad que
sea llevado a la justicia como cualquier
persona. Yo quisiera que la Procuraduría de Justicia haga la investigación y
soy el primero en exigir que se aplique
la ley y si tuvo alguna responsabilidad
pues que pague y enfrente su respon-
sabilidad”, dijo el funcionario.
Cuando Fernando fue cuestionado
sobre si sabía que su hermano estaba
involucrado con el cobro de piso en
los casinos, él dijo que, “No, si hubiera
tenido conocimiento, olvídate, de
ninguna manera, yo seguiré combatiendo la ilegalidad porque estoy convencido de que el tema que estamos
haciendo entre los tres órdenes de
Gobierno es importante continuar
con esa tarea”.
Luego, al medio día, Fernando Larrazabal brindó una conferencia de
prensa en donde no aceptó preguntas de los reportes, solo dijo que, “El
día de hoy algunos medios de comunicación publican fotografías de mi
hermano Jonás, tomadas en algunos
de los casinos que seguramente mi
administración ha clausurado en los
últimos días, en su momento él, mi
hermano, tendrá que aclarar las dudas que surjan de este evento, que él
responda de esas dudas y a cualquier
autoridad que así lo requiera. Contundentemente se los digo, ninguna
actividad de mi hermano tiene o ha
tenido nada que ver con esta administración municipal No se seré rehén de
nada ni de nadie”, finalizó el alcalde.

succumbed to a gunshot wound
sustained the previous day while
involved in a foot pursuit.
Officer Sollohub was on patrol at
about 11:00 am when he stopped
his vehicle to make contact with a
pedestrian near the intersection
of 19th Street and Moore Avenue.
As Officer Sollohub exited his patrol car the man fled on foot.
As Officer Sollohub chased the
man around the side of a house
he was shot once in the head. A
responding officer located him
and immediately began tending to
his wound. He was transported to
a local hospital before being flown
to Birmingham. He remained on
life support until his organs could
be donated.
The man who shot Officer Sollohub was arrested later in the day
after a massive manhunt. He faces
capital murder charges in connection with Officer Sollohub’s murder.
Officer Sollohub had served with
the Anniston Police Department
for two years. He is survived by his
parents.

On Sunday August 7, 2011, Dejon Marquee
White shot and fatally wounded Officer
Henwood while he was stopped at a
traffic light in an unprovoked attack.
Several minutes earlier the White
had randomly approached a customer
getting into a car at a local fast food
restaurant and shot him in the face
with a shotgun. Moments after fleeing
the scene, the vehicle was observed by
a gang unit officer from a neighboring
city driving at a high rate of speed. The
officer, who was unaware of the shooting, gave chase briefly before the pursuit was called off due to high speeds.
Four minutes after the pursuit ended
the vehicle pulled behind Officer Henwood’s patrol car and flashed its lights
several times. When Officer Henwood
pulled into the right lane the driver of
the vehicle pulled alongside him and
immediately opened fire on him with
the shotgun, striking Officer Henwood
in the head.
The driver fled the scene as two citizens in the car behind him provided
medical assistance to Officer Henwood
and used his radio to call for help.
Approximately 30 minutes later a
woman called 911 and told dispatchers that a man had just confessed the
shootings to her. Responding units encountered the man trying to leave the
area in the vehicle and fatally shot him
when he reached for the shotgun.
Officer Henwood was a U.S. Marine
Corps veteran and had served with the
San Diego Police Department for four
years. He is survived by his parents,
brother, and sister.

The U.S. Marshals Office is currently seeking Anthony Cobb on a warrant charging
him with escape and assault on a police officer. Deputies report that Montgomery
County authorities are also seeking Cobb for allegedly failing to appear in court on
burglary charges and escaping from custody in Montgomery County. U.S. marshals
also allegedly committed the crimes: destruction of property, unauthorized use of a
vehicle, receiving stolen property, assault of a law enforcement officer and failing to
appear for court-ordered mental observations. Cobb is described as 5 foot 11 and 170
pounds and has the name “Shelly” tattooed on his neck and another tattoo on his left
forearm that says “1991 Leo.”

San Francisco police released the sketch of a suspect
they believe brutally beat a San Rafael man in a
Candlestick Park restroom during a preseason football
game between the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland
Raiders. The 26-year-old victim was assaulted and
knocked unconscious in an upper-level restroom at
the stadium sometime between 7:15 p.m. and 7:45 p.m.
Saturday. He was in fair condition at a hospital as of earlier this week. Police are
seeking a suspect in the case that is described as a Pacific Islander man between 25
and 30 years old who is between 6 feet 3 inches and 6 feet 5 inches tall and weighs
between 225 and 260 pounds. He had a goatee and long, curly hair tied in a ponytail,
and was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans. The beating was part of
a rash of violence in and around Candlestick Park that night, which also included
two shootings in the parking lot. No arrests have been made in connection with the
shootings.

San Jose police are searching today for a transient suspected of killing a woman
found dead in a Whitton Avenue home. The woman, who has been identified as
Irma Campos, a 52-year-old San Jose resident, was found dead in a home on the 1200
block of Whitton Avenue just after 11 a.m. on Friday. She was found there by another
woman, who reported the death to a nearby fire station. Police now believe Campos
was killed in a domestic-violence related incident, and are searching for 55-year-old
Juan Osornio Martinez in connection with her death, according to Sgt. Jason Dwyer.
Martinez is homeless, and known to frequent the downtown San Jose area. Campos
is San Jose’s 29th homicide victim this year.

The Oregon State Police and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office are currently
seeking Jontae Raydale Mixon on a felony warrant charging him with seconddegree escape and dangerous drugs after he allegedly escaped from jail in April 2011.
According to detectives, Mixon later fled from state troopers in a high speed chase
from Oregon to Vancouver, Washington. Washington State Police joined the pursuit
when Mixon crossed the state line. He was later allegedly involved in a hit-and-run
crash in Vancouver. Washington State Police and Vancouver police officers conducted
an extensive search but were unable to locate him. Mixon is described as black, 5’10”
tall, 140 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He has a tattoo on his left arm, left
wrist and chest.

Man Beaten Unconscious Outside Cal-Fresno State
Football Game Saturday
A man was beaten unconscious outside a college football
game at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park on Saturday, two weeks
after several instances of violence
in and around the stadium during
an NFL preseason game, police said.
The latest attack occurred at
about 4 p.m. Saturday in the parkinglot outside of the stadium near
the start of a game between University ofCalifornia at Berkeley and
California State University, Fresno.
Officers responding to a report of a fight found a victim
unconscious and bleeding with
several witnesses pointing at another man and saying he was the
attacker, according to police.
The witnesses said two
groups of fans from the opposing
teams were yelling back and forth
at each other and a fight broke
out, during which the victim was
struck, police said.
The suspect allegedly admitted to the attack and was arrested.
His name was not immediately
available, an officer at the Bayview
Police Station said today.
The victim was taken to a
hospital with injuries that were
serious but not considered lifethreatening, the officer said.
Cal ended up defeating Fresno
State 36-21 in the season opener for
both teams.
Saturday’s attack came exactly two weeks after violence
marred an Aug. 21 preseason game
between the San Francisco 49ers
and Oakland Raiders at
Candlestick Park.
Two men were shot in the
parking lot, while another man
was beaten unconscious in a bathroom inside the stadium, according to police.
All three victims are expected
to survive their injuries.
The violence prompted San
Francisco police to increase their
presence the following week at the
49ers’ next home preseason game,

Modesto police detectives are investigating a doubleshooting that left one person dead and a second
in serious, but stable condition. Investigators have
identified an estrange husband as the alleged suspect
responsible for this shooting. On July 31, at about 8:43
p.m., Officers were dispatched to the intersection
of 7th Street and B Street in central Modesto for a
reported shooting. When officers arrived they located two vehicles, each containing
a shooting victim. A female victim was found in one car and she sustained non-life
threatening injuries, while a second male victim was found in another car and he
sustained fatal injuries. Investigators have learned Conrado Lopez a 32-year-old
Modesto resident, who is the estranged husband of the female victim, is allegedly
responsible for the shooting. The investigation has revealed, the male and female
victims were in separate vehicles and were following one another. At the time of
the shooting they were stopped at the intersection at 7th and B Street. Lopez drove
up to the victims and began to shoot into each vehicle. Both victims received at
least one gunshot wound. Lopez then fled in his white Chevy Silverado truck. Lopez
is currently wanted for alleged homicide and attempted homicide. He is considered
armed and dangerous. Lopez was last seen driving a white 2001 Chevy Silverado
extended cab truck License plate 6N26553.

The San Jose Police Department is asking for public’s help in identifying the suspect
in this photo. Detective Brian Meeker reports that on July 31st, 2011, this suspect
entered the Best Buy at 181 Curtner in San Jose. The suspect activated the store
alarm when he allegedly broke off a security device from an IPod. The store manager
contacted the suspect and asked him to come to the security office. The suspect
then allegedly punched the victim in the face and ripped the cell phone from his
hand. The suspect then fled the store with the victim’s phone. Witnesses described
the suspect as a white male light complexion, about 25 to 35 years old, about 5 foot8inches tall, about 170 pounds. He was unshaven and had shoulder length brown hair
in a ringed pony tail.

On Tuesday, August 16, 2011, San Jose Police Department Homicide Detectives
identified the final suspect in the January 8th triple homicide at the Mexicali
Club. Detectives have identified 26 year old Arturo Castillo Velasquez as the
suspect. Suspect Castillo Velasquez is the suspect that can allegedly be seen on
the surveillance video footage from the crime scene which the police department
released earlier this year. In the video, Suspect Velasquez, clad in a ballistic vest,
attempts to kidnap Victim Humberto Sanchez at gunpoint. The surveillance video
can be viewed at www. sjpd.org on the SJPD YouTube channel. Detectives have
obtained a Ramey Warrant for murder for Suspect Velasquez. Suspect Velasquez’s
wherabouts are unknown. Detectives are asking for the public’s help in locating this
extremely dangerous suspect.

It is mid-August and many schools
have already begun classes. It seems
way too early to be starting, but at the
get-go parents often ask, “What can I
do to help my child be more successful in school?” Read on and you will get
ten tips to help you parent for school
success.
Marylou complained to me that
her son, Terrance, doesn’t do his
homework. Last year his grades were
horrible. “He’s a smart boy and scores
in the 80th percentile on his standardized tests. He just isn’t doing his
work. What can I do?”
Many parents share Marylou’s frustrations asking: • What can I do to help my child be successful in school? • How do I get my son to do his homework?
• How do I keep my daughter focused
on grades and not friends?
• How should I respond to my son’s poor
report card? • What should I do when all else seems
to fail?
Some parents assume they know
what the problem is -- he wastes time,
she’s lazy, he spends too much time
on the computer, she has ADD -- and
their knee-jerk reaction is to take
away rather than steer toward a more
holistic solution.
Aubrey’s father wasn’t much different. When she brought home a report
card of three C’s, two D’s, and an F, he
exploded. He took away the computer,
cell phone and her music. He made
her quit band saying she needs more
time to study. Aubrey had to come
home right after school and wasn’t allowed to hang out with friends. Being
isolated left her feeling hopeless. And
predictably, her grades did not improve.
Some parents try to motivate kids
by comparing them with siblings or
friends. “Why can’t you get the grades
your brother earned?” Or “Your cousin
is a good student; what happen to
you?” This approach does not work,
either. Guilt and blame may scar a person’s self-esteem.

Parent for School Success
Micro managing can backfire, creating dependence on parents. Teens are
moving toward independence and too
much of a watchful eye sends a message that “You can’t do this yourself.”
This may unintentionally thwart their
development.
All the yelling, shaming, comparing,
pleading, punishing or lecturing in the
world will not motivate your child to
be successful in the classroom. In fact,
increasing anxiety can make things
worse. A brain over loaded with cortisol, a stress hormone, will begin to
shut down.
What may help is a softer, kinder,
more holistic approach to your teen.
Here are ten tips to help you parent
for school success.
• Trust your child. Believe in his
abilities to do things on his own.
Let go of your attachment to the
outcome that you want.
• Get to know your teen. She
changes daily and if we have her
locked into a stereotype (lazy,
crazy, air-head adolescent) then

by your own ignorance.
Ask your child what his concerns are. And then listen to
what he has to say. Value your
child’s inner world.
Discover what your teen likes
and dislikes with total acceptance. Without judgment.
Engage your son in conversations about his future. Ask

Appreciate them no matter how
outlandish they seem to you.
Know your daughter’s daily
activities. Be involved and
interested in her life. Support
extra-curricular activities, such as
speech tournaments, school plays
and concerts, and sporting events.
Your participation in school programs is a great way to support
your teen’s success in school.
Attend school functions. Make
it a priority to attend school
programs, such as Back to School

Night, PTA meetings, and ParentTeacher conferences. • Be a partner in your child’s education. Get to know your child’s
teachers and form a working relationship with them. Engage in
dialogue with the teacher to stay
on top of any trouble spots. Use
the phone or e-mail to keep in

will not want help. Others will

school has little to do with you being a
good or bad parent. It has more to do
with the learning style, temperament,
talents, personality and life journey

Second Suspect Arrested In Alleged Connection
With 2009 Saratoga Murder
Santa Clara County sheriff’s
deputies arrested a second suspect in the murder of a 96-yearold man during a Saratoga home
invasion robbery in 2009. Juan
Cortinas, 33, of San Jose, was arrested late last week on suspicion of beating Charles Maridon
to death in the 20000 block of
Wardell Road on Dec. 3, 2009,
according to the Santa Clara
County Sheriff’s Office. Cortinas
will be arraigned on one count
of murder and one count of robbery on Wednesday afternoon,
according to Lisa McCrary, a
spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office.
Cortinas is the former co-worker
of 34-year-old Sonny Lopez, of
San Jose, the first suspect in
the case who was fatally shot by
Fremont police officers on March 7,
2010, in Cupertino. Lopez was wanted on suspicion of fatally shooting
his uncle, 49-year-old Larry Lopez,
inside his Fremont home in the 100
block of Sycamore Street on March
1, 2010, according to Fremont police. In the Maridon case, two men
broke into his home around 11 p.m.,
beat Maridon and his 64-yearold daughter and fled with their
property, according to the sheriff’s
office. Both victims were found the
next morning by a landscaper who
worked at the home.
Maridon’s daughter survived, but
Maridon died of his injuries on Dec.
18, 2009. Cortinas was in custody
and awaiting a pre-trial hearing
on Sept. 14 for a separate charge

Hey, officer, let’s party, dude!
If you’ve had way too much to
drink, a police station probably
isn’t the best place to be - let alone
party. However, that didn’t stop a
Toronto motorist.
The driver, with a bottle of rum
beside him, mounted the curb and
pulled up beside an officer directing traffic. The driver told the
officer he was headed north but
pulled over, saying he could see a
party and wanted to join in, acting
Staff Sgt. Jed Handy said Tuesday.
Problem was, the party was part
of the Police Week festivities at 31
Division. “The officer went to talk
to him and sees an empty bottle of
rum and a half bottle of rum in the
seat of the car,” Handy said.
Man reports to probation officer in stolen car
A Tampa man, already on probation for auto theft, is back behind bars after deputies say they
caught the guy visiting his probation officer in a stolen car. “This
fellow was on probation for auto
theft and he chose to report to his
probation officer driving a stolen
car,” stated Major Ron Spiller of
the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s
Office. It really didn’t take a lot of
police work. There aren’t many
Honda Accords with Washington
State plates reported stolen in
Hillsborough County, Florida. The
one in question had been reported
stolen a week earlier.

Man grows marijuana 50 yards
from Police Department
A 20-year-old is facing multiple
charges after marijuana plants police
say he was growing were found about
50 yards from the Georgetown, South
Carolina City Police Department.
Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office
agents on Thursday arrested a resident after a month-long investigation,
according to a news release issued
Friday. Agents found and seized 55
marijuana plants - with a street value
of around $66,000 - from the residence
and the woods behind it.
Police said the man, who was inside
the home at the time of the search,
was arrested without incident. He was
charged with manufacturing marijuana; possession with intent to distribute marijuana; possession with intent
to distribute marijuana a half-mile
from Georgetown High School; and
possession of drug paraphernalia.
