I will be missing you
and I will never
forget how much
you did for the
world of boxing and
for me.

The Committee decided to review each weight class and, when possible, declare some titles vacant. The hope is to avoid the stagnation of activities and,
on the contrary, ensure to the boxing community a constant activity and the possibility for other boxers to fight for this prestigious belt.

Don José and those unforgettable WBC gold times
CRUISERweight
Mikki NIELSEN has suddenly decided to relinquish this title
on voluntary basis (Tuesday September 13, 2016).
The Committee had no alternatives but to consider the decision taken by the Danish
fighter who was rated at #10 in the WBC September Ratings.
At the same time, the Committee has considered it urgent and important to ensure a
regular activity and, therefore, decided to approve a fight for the vacant title:
November 4 in Corona, California
by Banner Promotions
WBC #16 Stjvens Bujaj (Albania) against unbeaten Constantin Bejenaru (Moldova)
Both based in USA.
The bout will be for the vacant WBC International 200 Lbs title.
More news to come soon.

LightHeavyweight
Joe Smith Jr
rated at #34 before beating WBC #2 and defending champion Fonfara.
Long Island, New York, USA - Record: 22-1-0, 18 Kos - aged 26
The light heavyweight division has a new face and the name is Joe Smith, Jr. In one of boxing's shockers of the
year, Long Island knockout artist known as "The Irish Bomber" (22-1, 18 KOs) stunned defending champion Andrzej
Fonfara (28-4, 16 KOs) with a first round stoppage to win the WBC International Lightheavy weight title.
The event was staged by Warriors Boxing on Saturday night (June 18) at UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Illinois – USA.
Smith first floored in the center of the ring his opponent with a monstrous, punishing overhand right.
The furious onslaught continued with a flurry of punches that had the Fonfara in trouble again.
A jaw-jarring left hook had Fonfara down a second time and the bout was halted. Fonfara was unable to withstand the
barrage from the concrete fists of the Union 66 construction worker and referee Hector Afu stopped the annihilation at
2:32 of the opening round.

Former WBC International champion
Charles Manyuchi (Zimbabwe) again goes
into the other man’s back yard and
comes away with a win as he lifts the
prestigious WBC Silver World title. In
a hard fought battle both fighters
showed well early looking to
dominate. Manyuchi was quicker
and more accurate and established a
small lead and when Mikhaylenko
looked to starting to get into the fight
Manyuchi put the Russian down in
the tenth then staged a strong finish
to emerge the clear winner. Scores
118-110, 116-114 and 115-113 all for
Manyuchi. With no boxing in
Zimbabwe , the 26-year-old from
Masvingo has had to base himself in
Zambia and travel for fights. He went
to Burkina Faso to beat Patrice Sou
Toke (17-1) for the ABU title, Italy to
defend his WBC International title
against Gianluca Frezza (23-2-2) and
now to Russian to beat the 21-0
Mikhaylenko. Manyuchi was No 9
with the WBC but will get quite a
boost for beating Mikhaylenko. The
30-year-old Russian had beaten
Sechew Powell, Ronald Cruz, Johan
Perez and Karim Mayfield and was
top rated. So, a great win for our
former WBC International king.
See photo….
The Committee was practically forced to reconsider this situation after a fight
was to be contested between WBC #12 Ceferino Rodriguez and Aitor Nieto. The
fight, which was to be for this vacant belt, was supposed to be held in Oviedo
(Spain) but never actually took place.
Therefore, the Committee believed it was important to
recover the time wasted unnecessarily and sanctioned a
vacant title bout to keep the activity going.
The Championship will now take place in Birmingham
next October 22 and the vacant belt be contested
between two British stars:

Why the Silver Championships are important
Based upon the feedback and request that we had received
from several promoters, managers and trainers;
in 2011 we have started with the WBC International Silver
Championships .
The Interim Championships had previously turned out to be an
innovative activity , but overcome by the events and by the
new demands of the pugilistic world market in recent years.
Therefore, the Committee decided to support the Silver
Championships in order to replace the old Interim title bouts.
The Silver Championship is not an age-restricted title, but
instead does factor in the boxers’ respective quality and ability.
Like the full WBC International title, the Silver belt will be
available to boxers who intend to pursue their career within the
World Boxing Council and are supported by a good record.
So far, the results have proved us right and it is encouraging to
see that the boxing community has responded with enthusiasm
and gratitude .
Many WBC International Silver Championships have been
successfully promoted in the last five years.

TITLE now VACANT
Spain’s Nicolas Gonzalez Perez had won the vacant WBC International 140 Lbs
title last May 27 when he stopped Belgium’s Steve Jamoye in six spectacular
rounds.
Then, Nicolas fought for another organization and was stopped by Ruben Nieto.
Therefore, the WBC International title was automatically declared vacant.
The Committee has now approved Silver champion Cletus Seldin
to fight for this vacant belt.
Joe DeGuardia (photo) will soon announce the date of the fight and
the name of Seldin’s contender .
In the meantime, the vacant Silver belt bout will be contested
in Russia. See next page.

Pasquale Di Silvio
(Italian champion)
Dodd wins the vacant WBC International title with
a unanimous decision over brave Italian champion
Pasquale Di Silvio. The local fighter boxed intelligently
and did everything well. He worked behind a sharp jab
and used it set up his hard rights , while Di Silvio struggled a bit to get into the fight.
The latter did have a good third round landing his best punch of the fight a right that stopped
Dodd in his tracks, but the English fighter banged back to hurt Di Silvio in the fourth.
From the mid-point of the fight Dodd got stronger and Di Silvio tired. The Italian never gave
up, but Dodd stayed strong to the end to make sure the decision went his way this time.
Scores 98-92 twice and 97-93. The 31-year-old “Masher” , losing and drawing two very
controversial fights with Scott Cardle in his last two fights, is a very popular fighter and it was
good to see him get his just reward in the shape of the prestigious WBC International title.
Di Silvio proved a durable and brave contender , showing he had deserved this chance.
The champion has been reported he will make his first defence next October 15 in
Liverpool. More to come.

Josh Warrington (24-0, 5 KOs) scored a ninth round KO over Patrick Hyland (31-3, 15 KOs). Warrington dropped Hyland in round eight and twice
in round nine. After the second KD in round nine, referee Ian John Lewis did not proceed with the full count and stopped the fight. Notes:
*Patrick Hyland stepped on the scales on Friday July 30th at 1.35 pm LT
He scaled an over-the-limit weight (128.6 Lbs) and was given the regular two hours to
make the limit. We were then told by his team manager that he would not be revisiting the scales. The interested parties agreed at the rules meeting to proceed
with the non-title bout. Warrington had actually retained the title having scaled a regular 125.2 Lbs on his first attempt.
Warrington outboxed tough Hyland and then showed real power in his finishing. Hyland was trying to walk Warrington down in the first round; he looked bigger and
stronger and scored with some long rights to the body , but the round was Warrington’s as the champion slotted home quick jabs and then got though with some
rapid combinations. Hyland kept marching forward looking for a big punch to turn the fight but in the sixth Warrington
was confident enough to stand and trade and Hyland was taking plenty of head punches.
They both had some success as they traded punches at the start of the seventh, but by the end of the round Warrington
was again getting through with fast combinations and landing heavy rights to the head.
Warrington started the eight with another series of head punches and did land two rights which sent Hyland down on
one knee. Warrington finished it in the ninth.

International Promotion’s Night of Champions 2 held at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall in Pasay City,
Wednesday evening. Noynay, who was fighting for the vacant belt for the second time, used his
length and speed advantage in landing quick punches against the smaller Pumicpic in the early-going
of the match. Moreover, Misako was able to weave his way out of his opponent’s punches that
frustrated his opponent. Pumicpic, a former WBC Youth Silver titleholder, tried to close the distance
in the third round by aggressively charging towards Noynay with body shots.
It proved effective , as Noynay buckled down but was able to throw counter shots – including a welltimed left uppercut in one of their exchanges. The fourth stanza of the bout was a close-knit affair
that saw the Zamboanga del Norte-native pressuring his opponent to the ropes. Noynay though was
able to get out of harm’s way and eventually landed his combinations on Pumicpic.
The action picked up in the latter rounds as both men trade hard leather, but was momentarily
stopped in the fifth after Pumicpic suffered inadvertent headbutt. Misako committed the same foul at
the sixth round that resulted to a point deduction for him prior to the start of the seventh round.
The fight ultimately ended at the 1:08 mark of the eight round when both men clashed their heads.
Ringside doctors decided the fight had to be stopped and all three judges scored the bout in favor of
Pumicpic with a close 76-75×3 scoresheet.

Ryan BURNETT - Born on 21 May 1992 - 14-0, 9 inside
Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK
Burnett retained his WBC International title last July 30 in Leeds with
Points win over more than expected Mexican Cesar Ramirez. After a
slow first round, Burnett switched to southpaw in the second and took
control. Ramirez was competitive and made Burnett work hard in the
third , but the Belfast man was doing the cleaner work and scored with a
hard right. Ramirez came back into the fight in the fifth showing a strong
jab and , although Burnett also had some success , Ramirez did enough to
take that round. With them both landing with good punches in the sixth
that one was close. Still at southpaw Burnett was landing some good
combinations before switching back to orthodox. Burnett had a dominant
eighth and Ramirez was down late in the round from a body punch. From
there Ramirez was looking to survive and Burnett handed out some fierce
punishment in the ninth and tenth with Ramirez almost going down a
couple of times but lasting to the final bell.
The 24-year-old Burnett (14-0, 9) was making the first defence of this belt
he had won last February in Manchester against tough Anthony Settoul
(France). The talented Burnett was a gold medallist at the Youth
Olympics and had just 4 loses against 94 wins , but his move to the pro
ranks was delayed firstly by a back injury and then by aneurism.
He is an outstanding talent. Ramirez had won his last four fights.

Arthur Cordero Villanueva (Philippines) , the former champion, has
decided to move up in weight.
He had won the vacant belt last November 28th with a split decision
nod over Victor Mendez (19-3-2, 15 KOs) of Hermosillo, Mexico.
Recently , Villanueva found it difficult to comply with the 115 Lbs
limit and decided to move up to Bantamweight.
The WBC International Superfly weight title is now vacant.
The Committee would like to encourage promoters to apply for a
vacant Championship in short terms.

Jonathan Mark C. Refugio (Philippines) won the WBC International LightFly-weight title last
February 20 against at that time defending champion Richard Claveras.
Since that, Refugio did not make his first title defence.
Last July 16 Refugio lost by UD against Melvin Jerusalem without a WBC authorization.
The Committee tried to give Refugio the opportunity to keep his belt subject to a title defence to
take place by Mid September.
This situation has caused the division to be frozen up with no activity.
The Committee had no alternatives but to declare the WBC International LightFly-weight title
vacant in order to crown a new champion in short terms.

Former title holder Xiong Zhao Zhong decided to fight for another
organization. There is a bit to say about Zhong, but the main reason why
the Committee vacated this belt is simply due to the decision of the former
champion to fight an IBF Eliminator .
Zhong lost that fight in China last May 25th by SD12 to José Antonio
Jimenez.
Before that, Zhong was dropped from WBC # 3 to WBC #18 after he lost on February 11th
against AIBA APB World Champion Lyu Bin. Bout on 2-11-16 in Lu Zhou, China. Lyu Bin W

… about the ………
WBC International
Championships
Backed by thirty years of great success and many outstanding WBC International
Championships that have taken place, it is now very clear that this success would have never been achieved without
proper direction and good control of the international boxing scenario both from a technical and ethical point of
view. This great success could never have been earned without the participation of the worldwide boxing
community. We are today very proud of the superb standards we have set. But, that doesn’t mean we are
complacent. We want to do more work and achieve more. We want to discover further productive areas and
unearth many more great champions. There is no doubt that we have set standards for other sanctioning bodies, to
help promote this great sport of ours.
It is also very clear now that only the WBC, with its outstanding organization and unity, could have established this
revolutionary and innovative programme, which has helped promote and develop boxing in the world. This great
innovation to boxing took place in the beautiful city of Aruba during the 1986 Annual Convention we held, amid the
noise of the rolling waves and hundreds of tourists. The first country to promote a WBC International
Championship was Thailand, on 10th December 1986, when mexican Raul Valdez stopped in four rounds Rocky
Chitalada to win the bantamweight belt in Bangkok. Since then, we have set out to many wonderful lands and
staged out sensational fights, plus promotional activity. The WBC flag has fluttered all around the world, it has
been raised in many wonderful sites and in several new venues. What beneficts have the WBC International
Championships brought to the world and how has it helped boxing ? How have fighters who are the leaders of our
great sport benefited ?
The WBC International Championships have been a boon to boxing because they have helped spot new talents, brought
out new fighters who would have never seen the light of the day for years if not for this great talent-spotting
championship. In other words, it has been a great stepping stone tournament for many boxers to reach stardom. This
innovative activity has helped create great champions. The WBC International Championships have helped promoters
and managers all over the world. It has guided them in the right direction and placed them on a platform of progress.
This outstanding championship has showcased rising stars who, under normal circumstances, would have been hidden
for years, without any opportunity to forge ahead. This unique event has helped the growth of several fighters who were
denied in the past of excelling in boxing and have been forced to remain hidden due to lack of opportunities. Like me, I
am sure, many are aware that several young fighters we see in our midst have surfaced because of these championships.
As Chairman of the WBC International Championships Committee I am naturally happy that we have so many top
world champions who have blossomed from the WBC International Championships ranks. They have thus opened the
doors for others to follow through the beautiful example they have set. Yes, the WBC has indeed taken a revolutionary
step by launching the International Championships activity which has been productive, revolutionary and has been a
great boon to boxing.
We must always thank our beloved, late and greatly missed WBC lifetime President
Don José Sulaiman Chagnón for having come up with this brilliant idea.
Our President had always been a man of broad views who had devoted his life for the
good of boxing.
Sincerely yours,
Mauro BETTI
The WBC International Championships were created by President José Sulaiman in Aruba
in 1986, during our annual Convention.
Att. Antonio Sciarra was appointed as Chairman of the Committee.
Antonio was indeed a very close friend of Don José.
As two real brothers, they were often at odds of ideas even if, in the end, their true friendship
always made them reconcile.
In 1993 I was attending the WBC Annual Convention in Las Vegas, while Antonio did not
come because seriously ill.
I was suddenly reached by a phone call from Rome to be sadly informed that Antonio had
passed away.
While informing the General Assembly that Antonio had passed away, President Sulaiman
appointed me as new Chairman.
Antonio was for me like a second father.
I am still missing him very much.
I will be forever grateful to Antonio and to Don José and I must consider myself a lucky man
for having met them during my life.
I had known Don José Sulaiman since 1982 and Antonio since 1981.
This year in Kunming (China) I have celebrated my 29th consecutive WBC Annual
Convention. I have never missed one single Annual Convention in 29 years.
After giving me the great honor to inherit the office of Antonio as Chairman of the Committee
back in 1993, Don José appointed me as member of the WBC Ratings Committee during the
WBC Annual Convention held in 1998 in Johannesburg (South Africa).
In 2004, during the annual Convention in Pukhet, I entered the WBC Board of Governors as
International Secretary and in 2014 in Las Vegas I have been elected as WBC Vice President.
Back in 1981 ( I was only 25 ) I started working for boxing at the Italian Olympic Committee
in Rome. It was there that I met Antonio and started working for professional boxing. Antonio
introduced me to the WBC the following year, when the WBC Annual Convention was held in
Venice, Italy. I have always been a WBC man and I will never join another Organization.
Very truly yours, Mauro
Too often today envy and arrogance dominate the world and it is not to be considered a
rarity to see how easily the mud is thrown on the face of a possible opponent or
competitor by those who have nothing to do with ethics and good faith.
Something must be done to fight with all our strength in order to defend
the credibility of our Sport.
Fortunately, the World Boxing Council has always been united, even
in times of great difficulty as when we saw the world collapsing during the amazing
“Rocchigiani case”.
Thanks to the personality and the wisdom of President Don José Sulaiman , together with
the great unity of the WBC Board members, the nightmare was over and the sky clear
again in the WBC planet.
Remarks
It is indeed important to remind that, during the above mentioned amazing period,
Graziano Rocchigiani did fight for the WBC Green belt. It was for the vacant WBC
International Lightheavyweight title. The fight was promoted by Universum Box
Promotion on 10th May 2003 in Stüttgart (Germany) and Rocchigiani lost on points to
Thomas Ulrich. That fight happened when the WBC was still in the trenches to fight
against the absurd sentence decided by a judge of New York.
Therefore, all those ( ... too many today ... ) who spit venom on
their potential antagonists should understand that, only by
fighting against envy and bad faith, we will be able to ensure a
better future to boxing.
I hope these few lines have not bored you to tears ….
... any reference to events or persons is purely coincidental ...
Friendly yours,
Mauro Betti, chairman
