WILSHIRE BOULEVARD TEMPLE BULLETIN Online Edition Please call to obtain a full printed copy. Volume 95, Number 23 • December 1, 2008 Giving—And Receiving חנכה Take Chanukah With You CHANUKAH A Celebration of Light A pocket guide to Chanukah 2 Got Connection? bet all our contributors do, too—what Jewish tradition teaches: that the real beauty is in the giving. That’s why we call it tzedakah—righteous contributions. Along with these images, JWW has provided DVDs for all our schools about how the solar cookers are being used in the camps, thus giving our kids the privilege of seeing the “end UN OLA point” of what a few thousand KK mensches can do…. Rabbi Stephen Julius Stein LD EP AI M In This Issue provide replacement cookers for the first two camps.” One often imagines that to receive is better than to give; after all, those who get are almost always most in need. What is given can be as fundamental as these solar cookers, which use sunlight to create drinkable water and nourishing food, as well as provide security by sparing the women from having to forage for firewood amid the Janjaweed militants. Yet, for all our faraway friends have gotten from our tzedakah, I feel—and I’ll R on’t leave Egypt without Darfur” was the clarion call we sent out to the congregation last spring, and by the time we reached the end of Pesach, almost $22,000 had been given as tzedakah to the Solar Cooker Project of Jewish World Watch ( JWW). JWW wrote us: “We’ve successfully completed outfitting our first two refugee camps, Iridimi and Touloum, and your generous donation will help jumpstart the opening of a third camp at Oure Cassoni as well as TI “D RIN G T HE WO R 2008 Retreat Hagadol Torah Portion Leah & Rachel A Lesson in Love Vayeitzei, Genesis 28:10-32:3 E very family has its share of “drama.” This is true for our families, and it was certainly true for our biblical ancestors and their families. Think about it. Cain and Abel lived and died in bitter rivalry; Moses, Aaron and Miriam balance out an intricate triangle of interdependency. Then there are Leah and Rachel, who as two sisters married to same man, probably have one of the most complex relationships in the entire Torah. As Jacob’s wives, they seem to be rivals, vying for his attention, affection and ability to produce children. However, their childhood relationship is veiled in the silence of the text. With no mention of their mother, tradition suggests that the sisters grew up in an emotional vacuum and were drawn together by a mutually supporting “self-mothering” bond. In allowing her elder sister, Leah, to take her place as Jacob’s bride, Rachel shows a deep-seated love that is equal to, if not greater than, her love for Jacob. Through this overwhelming act of kindness we see that their relationship is underpinned by a mutual concern that was never entirely disrupted. On the surface, the women seem to be competitors; however, the insights of our tradition and imaginations present a picture of silent partners, allies for a greater purpose. Our own relationships with siblings, parents, children and friends are also complex combinations of caring, competition, jealousy and concern. By getting “inside” the printed text to hear the voices of our biblical families, we can understand, elevate and heal the important relationships in our own lives. Rabbinic Intern Gersh Lazarow Adult Opportunities Taking It With You חנכה CHANUKAH A Celebration of Light You can take it with you—the chanukiyah, that is! T ake a chanukiyah with you everywhere you travel this winter. Place it on a windowsill or a hotel room porch and publicize the miracle of the vat of oil lasting eight nights—and especially the miracle of Jewish survival. I have fond memories of Chanukah celebrations in Mammoth Lakes. We’d ski all day and then place our chanukiyot on a condo windowsill and light up the winter darkness. Making latkes—well, that was another matter. With no food processor, our fingers bled as we peeled and grated the white potatoes. Olive oil splattered and salt and pepper were bought again and again. But our kids have great memories of Chanukah in the snow. This year, your clergy, faculty and staff are sending you a Pocket Guide to Chanukah—Chanukah to go! You’ll receive a gift of everything you always wanted to know about Chanukah, and it’s small enough to put in your pocket but still large enough to read. Information, activities, instructions for lighting and even a couple of time-tested recipes will be yours—and yes, you can take it with you. Part of the blessing of Chanukah celebrations is in giving. So give—give beyond the home circle. This year is a wonderful time to have your gift benefit Israel in addition to those you love. Make a simple purchase of a Mazal Tov Israel Bond and let your family and friends extend A pocket guide to Chanukah the activism of the Maccabees into our age. May the light of the chanukiyah glowing brightly in all corners of the earth extend our prayers for hope and light, compassion and peace! Rabbi Karen L. Fox Watch your mailbox! Your copy of A Pocket Guide to Chanukah is coming to your mailbox soon! But, if you can’t wait, we put everything online at www.wbtla.org/pages/chanukah 2 Brawerman Elementary School Got Connection? T his is the year of Kesher 2—or, as we say at Brawerman, “Got connection?” Brawerman is currently participating in the second exchange with our twinning school in Tel Aviv, the Ussishkin School. This year, ten Israeli students visited us for almost two weeks, living with host families, attending school, enjoying camp, solidifying friendships, touring Los Angeles and connecting with our school community. In April, Brawerman sixth graders will travel to Israel and reconnect with their Israeli friends. They can’t wait! Center for Learning & Engagement 2008 Retreat Ha’gadol O ver the weekend of November 7–9, the youth of Wilshire Boulevard Temple gathered at Camp Hess Kramer for their annual retreat—an amazing opportunity for our different youth programs to come together and celebrate Shabbat and discuss their developing Jewish identities. Children from grades 3–12 joined us for this special experience. Our high school students were engaged in programs that examined different styles of Jewish learning as well as different takes on practicing Judaism. The younger students participated in programs that focused on their developing Jewish identities. They looked at how different Jewish ritual items play a role in their Judaism, and how the three pillars of Judaism—Torah, worship and acts of loving kindness—are part of who they are as Jews. The programs were written and run by our talented Wilshire Boulevard Temple Youth board, whose leadership and dedication helped make the weekend a success. If your children missed this event, we hope they can join us for our Spring Retreat, taking place March 6–8, or the next Retreat Ha’gadol in fall 2009. These retreats offer a chance to take their Jewish experience to a new level, as our participants did this year. Seeing our youth community pray, sing, learn and have fun together was truly something to behold. It’s something you’ll want your kids to experience.
