Jubilee Year of Mercy
February 21, 2016
Second Sunday of Lent
Many icons depicting Jesus’ transfiguration bear
the Greek title Metamorphosis, a technical term also
for nature’s springtime transformation. Fittingly, this
Jubilee Year of Mercy coincides with the Lectionary’s Year of Luke, for only Luke specifies Moses
and Elijah speaking about Jesus’ “exodus that he was
going to accomplish in Jerusalem” (Luke 9:31). Israel’s exodus liberated from slavery; Jesus’ exodus
liberates from sin’s living death of selfishness. Pope
Francis suggests that Lent’s prayer, fasting, and
works of charity can transfigure the world, if Christians translate Isaiah’s challenge into our daily lived
experience of Jesus’ life-giving exodus by releasing
those bound unjustly, setting free the oppressed, sharing your bread with the hungry, bringing the afflicted
and homeless into your house, clothing the naked, not
turning your back on your own. “If you remove from
your midst oppression, and malicious speech . . . then
light shall rise for you in the darkness . . . you shall be
like a watered garden, like a spring whose water never
fails” (Isaiah 58:9, 10, 11).

deseo en los lugares áridos y dará vigor a tus huesos;
serás como huerto regado y como manantial cuyas
aguas nunca faltan” (Isaías 58:9, 10, 11).

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT
Nosotros podemos abstenernos
(renunciar) de comer carne en otros
días diferentes a los requeridos, dejar los dulces, pastelitos, postres,
refrescos, chicles, café, té, fumar,
cerveza, vino, licores fuertes, comer entre comidas, y dejar nuestras
comidas o bebidas favoritas, etc.
Ayuno
plano no ver televisión.
Haz Buenas Obras
Visita a los enfermos; visita a personas en hogares de convalecientes;
aconseja, demuestra o reza frente a
Aumenta tus donativos a la Iglesia;
ayuda por embarazo; apoya los programas de comida para los pobres;
ayuda a los pobres.
Haz Trabajos de Apostolado
Lleva a alguien contigo a misa; invítalo a confesarse; invita a alguien
a convertirse y hacerse católico:
comienza por hablar con él o ella;
Haz Lectura Espiritual
Proponte tu mismo hacer cando
menos 15 minutos de lectura de algún buen libro católico cada día;
debemos imitar).
Consagra tu vida a Dios
Haz tu ofrecimiento de obras cada
mañana, consagrando tus oraciones,
trabajos, gozos y tristezas, a Dios a
través del Inmaculado Corazón de
la Virgen María.

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT
Rite of Election
While many of us would probably agree that
our national, state and local elections are rituals of a
special breed, we hardly expect to find a “rite of
election” in church. But long before any of our
ancestors thought of electing their leaders, God was
electing a people, selecting Israel, a rag-tag clan in a
tiny corner of the earth, to be special, holy, a chosen
people. God did not choose them because they were
noteworthy in any way; they were not powerful,
strong or particularly clever. But once they were
chosen, they were God’s forever. Even when they
strayed, looking to other gods for hope or help, God
clung to them fiercely, calling them back again and
again when anyone else would have gladly let them
go.
It is the same with us. God chooses us, elects
us, in Christ, to be a holy people, to be a church, to
be signs of the reign of God on earth. The catechumens who have been preparing for Baptism and
those who have been working with them for months
and years believe that God has chosen them to be
one of us, the baptized. At the rite of election last
Sunday, their godparents, sponsors, catechists,
pastors, and friends testified before Archbishop
Gomez that God had chosen these people. They
offered the evidence of their lives among us, hearing
and following God's word, praying with God's
people and taking part in the work and the communal
life of the God's church. After listening to this testimony, Archbishop Gomez declared they were
elected for Baptism, chosen to be God's own in
Christ Jesus - not because they have earned, but because God wants it. That is election by a landslide!
Let us surround our
elect - Ramon Perez,
Christopher Perez, Erin
Sosa, and Jewel Chavez
in prayer and loving
support during their
final preparation for the
sacraments of Baptism,
Confirmation, and
Eucharist at the Easter
Vigil on Saturday,
March 26th. Keep, also,
our candidates William Franklin,
Maria Bernal, and
Leticia Ramirez in your
thoughts, prayers and loving support as they
continue their preparation for the reception of the
sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist at the
Easter Vigil on March 26th.

SEGUNDO DOMINGO DE CUARESMA
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The treasures of our tradition can often be traced
to one source, but like the waters of a river branching out on its way to the sea, are received differently
as they filter through various cultures and customs.
Long ago, mostly because of the preparation of candidates for baptism, the annual feast of the Lord’s
death and resurrection was preceded by a period of
preparation. In the West that comes to us as Lent, a
word drawn from the Old English word for springtime, referring to the lengthening hours of sunlight
in this hemisphere.
In the East, the tradition of preparing for Easter
is received as “Great Lent,” to distinguish it from a
secondary “Lent” preceding Christmas, and a twoweek period, a kind of “pre-Lent,” that gradually
introduces the faithful to the austerities of Great
Lent. One of the major differences between East and
West is in the vigor of the Lenten fast. In Great Lent
the customs of fast and abstinence are far more strict
than we are accustomed to. For us, meat is off our
Lenten tables on Friday, but in the East, meat disappears from the diet completely, along with dairy
products.

WE ARE TO BE TRANSFORMED
Today’s showing forth of God’s glory is filled
with a light that astonishes and reveals. Jesus transfigured on Mount Tabor energizes even the sleepy
apostles, who see but cannot get hold of it. They can
be forgiven for not apprehending the full meaning of
this extraordinary vision of a transfigured Jesus with
Elijah and Moses. The whole of the Law and prophets is summed up here on this mountain.
The transfiguration on Mount Tabor is handed
over to us this Sunday. As Paul reminds us, it is we
who are to be transformed. The light and life of the
Resurrection are set forth here so we do not lose
heart and fall entirely asleep. This Sunday looks to
Easter. It looks to transformation. It asks us to lift up
our heads and acknowledge the risen Lord as our
light and our salvation.

he sembrado en varias parroquias.

LET NOTHING DISTURB YOU
Let nothing disturb you,
Nothing frighten you.
All things are passing.
God never changes.
Patient endurance attains all things.
Whoever possesses God lacks nothing,
God alone is sufficient.
—St. Teresa of Ávila
NADA TE TURBE
Nada te espante.
Todo se pasa.
Dios no se muda.
La paciencia todo lo alcanza.
Quien a Dios tiene nada le falta.
Sólo Dios basta.
