SPONSORED BY THE COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION OF MEADVIEW SERVING MEADVIEW AND LAKE MEAD CITY Community News Online at <www.comaz.info > Adrienne O‘Keeffe-Editor Jonathan Kiser--Assistant Editor JULY 15, 2016 A SELFIE TOUR OF MEADVIEW The 4th of July weekend brought more visitors to Meadview than we’ve seen in many years. Most of the visitors were drawn here by the lure of enjoying boating activities and a long holiday weekend to pack in a lot of fun. Many community activities added to the fun with a beautiful flag raising ceremony at the VFW, an Ice Cream Social at the MCA, two different band parties at Fisherman’s Landing and a fund raiser for Mt. Tipton School. Even without these special events, Meadview offers a lot of photo ops and ―selfie‖ staging places. As you travel north on Pierce Ferry Road, turning a bend near Patterson Grade offers you a breathtaking view of the vast Joshua Tree Forest. A little farther north, turning right at Diamond Bar Road and driving a short distance will bring you to the Joshua Tree Forest Kiosk. Put your ―selfie‖ stick to work taking photos on the footbridge and at the kiosk with the Joshua Tree Forest as the backdrop. If you are more adventuresome, try to find the largest tree for your photo op. As you approach Meadview, the Welcome to Meadview sign is another popular photo op location. After that, head over to the Joy Trail at Diamond Creek where seven low impact exercise stations await you for fun photo taking opportunities. Next stop is Fisherman’s Landing for a ―selfie‖ photo in front of what we believe to be the largest fishing pole in Arizona. Back on Pierce Ferry Road and heading north, you will catch the first glimpse of the lake at the Overlook on the left. But if you are staging a ―selfie‖ with the lake behind you, be careful how close to the edge you stand. It is about an 80 foot drop to the bottom. As you approach the lake, you will see the two massive monoliths on either side of the road. Thrill seeking hikers actually do climb these buttes. Watch for mountain goats as you continue the drive to the lake where they can be seen scaling the rocky cliffs. The winding road to the launch ramp offers many different views of the lake just waiting for ―selfie‖ action. If you are traveling without a boat, watch for a road on the left about midway on the ramp approach which can take you to the water’s edge for some fun in the water. The ―beaches‖ are rocky so plan on wearing proper footwear. Plan to end your tour on the patio at the Boathouse Café where you can take ―selfies‖ with the Grand Wash Cliffs at sunset as the backdrop. In July and August, you may have a late afternoon monsoon storm to add to the drama. Sunset views can be spectacular looking to the east and west. These are a few Meadview photo op ideas. How many can you find? The meeting was an opportunity for residents and local officials to talk with ADWR about the area’s water supply and to identify strategies to meet future water demands. It was noted that Mohave County has some of the largest groundwater aquifers in the State of Arizona and ensuring we have enough water for future generations and growth is crucial for future sustainability in our county. The Northwest Basin Planning Area is made up of four groundwater basins: Detrital Basin, Hualapai Valley, Meadview Basin, and the Sacramento Valley Basin. Governor Ducey’s Water Initiative for the State involved ADWR identifying and prioritizing 22 planning areas across the State. The Mohave County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jean Bishop sent a letter to Director Buschatzke in February asking for the Northwest Basin Planning Area be placed as a top priority behind Cochise and LaPaz Counties. Director Buschatzke announced at the meeting that we were being considered equal in priority. The Northwest Basin is not within any Active Management Area (AMA) or Irrigation Non-Expansion Area (INA) that requires additional water management. Under Arizona State Statue, ADWR’s regulatory authority is limited if the Basin is not within one of these management areas. Therefore there are no reporting requirements in the Northwest Basins Planning Area outside of Community Water System reporting. ADWR explained the only limitation on groundwater use is that it must be put to beneficial use and be withdrawn from a legally constructed and registered well. During the hearing, ADWR stated their goal during this process was to develop a stakeholder driven set of solutions for future water demand and supply imbalances. They intend to complete the process within a one year timeframe. While an AMA or INA is not always possible, there are other options ADWR is looking at. Some may require legislative action and we are also looking into a middle ground without having to put the Northwest Basin into an AMA or INA. Any questions regarding water resources of Northwest Basin Planning area can be directed to Mr. John Riggins at Arizona department of Water Resources at jrriggins@azwater.gov. Additional stakeholder meetings and discussions will be scheduled by ADWR regarding the Northwest Basin Planning Area in the upcoming months. TOWN HALL MEETING AUGUST 6 MEET ‗N GREET COM will host a Meet and Greet on August 6 at the MCA auditorium from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm. This meeting is to introduce candidates running for offices that are up for election in Mohave County, Arizona State and Federal legislature. This will be the only meeting being held in Meadview for the voting public to meet these candidates before the Election Primary on August 30. If any of the candidates are running unopposed, the results of whom will be elected to the office will be decided with the Primary election. Also, if there is no candidate running from the opposing party or an independent, the votes cast in the Primary election will be the decisive votes. This will be the case in many of the races in Mohave County, so the Primary Election will be very important. Refreshments will be served. If you can attend, please be sure to bring your questions for the various candidates. CAMPFIRE STARTER An easy way to get a roaring blaze going is to place a few corks in a jar with a tight fitting lid. Add enough rubbing alcohol to cover and let soak an hour before you plan on lighting the fire. Place corks under the logs, use a match to ignite the corks. Be sure to check local fire restrictions before you light that fire. COMMUNITY NEWS Page 3 JULY 15, 2016 MOHAVE COUNTY DISTRICT 4 SUPERVISOR CANDIDATE FORUM By Butch Meriwether A forum for Mohave County District 4 Supervisor candidates has been scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, August 1, 2016, at the Golden Paradise Land Owners’ (GPLO) building located at 5505 U.S. Highway 68 in Golden Valley. The forum being hosted by the GPLO is designed to highlight the candidates and to give them the opportunity to provide information about their backgrounds; give the residents a chance to ask questions of the candidates and to see what their goals, agendas and priorities are if elected. The names of the candidates who are running for the District 4 Supervisor position are (alphabetically) Rick Armstrong Jean Bishop, Mervin Pitchfork Freedom and Krystal Symonds-Gabrielson. The doors to the GPLO will open at 5:00 pm in order for everyone to have time to talk with the various elected officials and those running for office prior to the forum beginning. This forum is not a debate-type format and there will be no speeches or personal attacks on the candidates allowed by attendees of the event. If residents have any questions about the event or the format, they can contact Butch Meriwether via email at meriwether@butchsbrew.com or call him at (928) 530-8988. The four-hour boat tour departs at 10 a.m. from Willow Beach Marina. This unique chance to view and photograph desert bighorn sheep that come down from the rugged Black Mountains to drink from the river is on a first-come, first-served basis to the first 20 participants. ―If you want to see desert bighorn sheep in the Black Mountains, the best time is during the heat of summer,‖ said Erin Butler, terrestrial wildlife specialist based in Kingman. ―The animals don’t need to visit water often during the winter, but they do need to drink about every other day during the hot summer months. This is a great opportunity for people to connect with nature. Education is critical for understanding nature and the actions taken by Game and Fish and other agencies to ensure wildlife continues to thrive.‖ The registration fee is $50 per person (14 and older). Contact Joe Yarchin, wildlife viewing program coordinator, at (623) 236-7589, or e-mail jyarchin@azgfd.gov, to register. Be sure to include the number of participants, first and last names, ages of children, and your contact information (e-mail addresses, telephone numbers) in voicemails or e-mails. Participants are encouraged to bring the following: sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, water, snacks and camera. No tripods will be allowed on the boat, but small coolers are permissible. Life jackets will be provided and must be worn by all participants. All participants will receive more details about the viewing opportunity through mail or e-mail. KRMC IMPLEMENTS PARKING RESTRICTIONS IN EMERGENCY AREA Kingman Regional Medical Center will restrict access to the main hospital through the Emergency Department (ED) from 5:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily. The restricted access is necessary to free up parking outside the Emergency Dept. This action is necessary because there is limited ED parking space and people who need emergency care are being impacted. Patients and guests who do not need emergency services are asked to use the parking lot near the hospital’s main entrance, located off Beverly Avenue. KRMC volunteers offer complementary shuttle service for anyone who would like a ride from their car to any building on the KRMC campus. Additionally, volunteers provide wheelchair assistance within KRMC facilities for anyone who may have trouble walking to their appointments.
