Bryan Chapell, in his book Praying Backwards, begins with this thoughtprovoking question, “How would your prayer change if you began where you normally end?”
.
In some ways,
August is a sort of “beginning” month. It marks the beginning of a
new school year. This year especially, it marks the beginning of a new season of
ministry for First Baptist. It makes sense then to ask, “How do we begin well?”
For at least two reasons, I think Chapell’s question is good for us to think about as
we consider beginning well.
First, prayer is crucial in beginning well. I want you to know that my family and I
are so grateful that you have been praying for us. We have been praying for you as
well. As Paul noted in his letter to the Colossians, “since the day we heard about
you, we have not stopped praying for you.” I want to be able to say the same when
speaking of you. If we are to begin well, we must begin and continue in prayer for
one another and our community.
Second, to begin well we should begin with the end in mind. Chapell’s encouragement is that we truly offer all of our prayer “in Jesus’ name.” He calls this praying
backwards and notes, “Praying backwards simply ensures that [Jesus] comes first
in our thoughts so that we are prompted to make him first in our priorities.” Not
only is this a good way to pray, it’s a good way to live.
Think of the end when Jesus is completely magnified and our delight is in him
alone. Paul tells us “that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven
and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ
is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” As that reality becomes more vivid in our
hearts and minds, our priorities, plans and pursuits will begin to fall more in submission to Christ’s and our lives sill shine more brightly for his glory.
I look forward to beginning well with you all as we do so prayerfully and purposefully for Christ’s glory. I wonder, how will our lives change as we begin with the
end in mind?
Our living room is
the place we commune with God. Everyone is welcome to sit in
this room and explore how to deepen their love for God and their
journey as Jesus’ followers.

On the last Sunday of each
month we take up offerings for the
Shoe Box Ministry. With the coins
and bills that the youngsters collect
from the congregation, we purchase
items that can be sent to children
throughout our world who otherwise
may not receive a Christmas gift.
Shoebox Ministries would like to remind you to
please save your empty pill bottles for this ministry. We
have filled 705 boxes to date, so supplies are low. We
are looking for donations of thread, shears, straight
pins, needles and as ALWAYS, save your shoeboxes.
You may leave them in the office, or give them directly
to Lorlea. Thank you for your continued support.
It will soon be time to go to Denver (November 27th) to
take the shoeboxes to the distribution center. Planning
for the trip needs to happen long before November.
Please prayerfully consider going on this trip to help
prepare the boxes for shipping. Please let Lorlea know
if you may be interested in going this year.

That’s the feeling we have now that Pastor
Kyle, Sherry & Anna are in our midst!

We are still taking donations for One Great Hour of
Sharing. This year we will be sending our donations
toward disaster relief from the massive flooding that
took place in West Virginia in June 2016. Steep mountains, narrow valleys and a deadly train of storms came
together to cause the horrendous flooding that killed 23
people., forced thousands to evacuate and destroyed or
damaged thousands of homes and businesses.
Donation envelopes can be found in the foyer or
in the pews.

Dear First Baptist, Greetings in Christ!
We arrived in Brazil May 19th with our feet running! We got started setting up the house, fixing the
things that needed fixed, making connections again with those we work with, and visiting each place where
we minister. Today is July 26th, and we don't see anything in the immediate future that indicates things will
slow down until after August.
The biggest news concerns the Indian village! But before that, let's recap the last month.....
When we arrived, we found out the Utility companies had continued to bill us the normal amounts for
the entirety of our visit to the U.S., nine months. After discussing these things with them, we reserved ourselves to pay the bills(Over $2200) and start the process of taking them to court. After billing us for the first
5 months and us not paying, because we did not know, they cut the electric wires from the house and took
the water line out of the ground to our house. They would not reconnect anything until we payed everything
in full.
Thank the Lord of Hosts for our local church, Igreja Batista em Dom Pedro for giving us a place to stay
during this time(2 weeks) and for all they did to help with our ministry in the last year!
When we started ministry, but do you know, we found opportunity to minister in the midst of our utility
storm also? Ministry never stops when you are a witness and testimony for Jesus! He promised that in John
15:26-27a, "But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of
truth, which proceedeth from the Father, He shall testify of me: And ye also shall bear witness..."
We went to Jardim Tropical. We started this ministry 3 years ago. Our local church has kept the ministry
going through children's ministry and outreaches. We talked with Artur and his family, who were the first
family to let us into their house. He has started preaching 3 times a week from a small pulpit platform he
built there in the community. He said that the drug dealers converted, died or left after he started preaching
in January. Praise God! We hope to continue leadership training with him to equip him for the ministry
God has called him to.
We went to ITV, Institute for Transforming Lives. We help with this ministry. We focus on the parents
and young mothers while ITV focuses on the children. We reconnected with the people there. We saw much
fruit in the attitudes of the children and youth, and in the eyes of the parents and adults as we passed by
their houses again.
I, Brad, went to the Indian Village for ten days in June. Josiah and Doug, a friend of ours, went with me.
The people are doing great, growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ! God has been
speaking to Oscar and Analucia, two of our disciples there of returning to the village we evangelized last
year, 14 hrs further up the river, and we are now making plans for that trip, possibly in February 2017. They
want to start the same type of work that we are doing in their village, making disciples and teaching the
word verse by verse.
Melissa and I, Josiah, Veronica and Benjamin will all return to the village August 2nd. Melissa and the
kids will stay for 10 days and return to Manaus. I will continue on until August 20th teaching Inductive Bible Study methods and the major stories in Genesis.
There is so much ministry to talk about and so much fruit to be reaped! Luke 10:2, "Therefore said He
unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest,
that He would send forth labourers into His harvest."
Please pray for each of these ministries. Please also pray for Andrea, our oldest daughter. She moved
back to the U.S. last week to begin school in Virginia. Some of our church family there have taken her in and
are caring for her. One family from a local church donated a car for her to use to get to and from school.
Others are helping with her documentation, Drivers License, and getting a bank account set up. God is good
and provides the things His children need.
God bless you all, Thank you for your prayers,
Brad and Melissa, Andrea, Josiah, Veronica, and Benjamin
I emailed Brad asking the status of the boat and got this reply:
I had planned on writing personal notes out to people in the last month, but with the business of things
here, I never did . We had a group of 23 in our house/base 2 weeks ago, and since then we have been hosting a young couple and their two children. They leave tonight for the U.S. Perhaps this week I will be able
to get some stuff done around the house that we have been putting off.
We went into the Indian village in June and now we are returning next week. The whole family will go
in. Melissa and the kids will return on the 12th of August. I will be in the village until the 20th. When I get
back, we will begin the process of boat shopping/building. They are all built on an as need basis. I would
hope to have one purchased and running by November or so.
