GOOD SHEPHERD
On the walls of underground corridors
and cemeteries where early Christians hid
from their Roman persecutors, the most
ancient representation of the risen Lord
was the image of the Good Shepherd.
Figures of a beardless young man bearing
a lamb on his shoulders or playing a flute
gave countless potential martyrs courage
at times of great danger. A shepherd
leads and protects. Two thousand years
later who are our “good shepherds”?
Heroic men and women who make
advances at great personal cost? Older,
wiser people who watch out for us and teach us by their
lives? Children who dare to trust? Who is Christ for us
today? Text, James A. Wilde, PhD © 1998, OCP. All rights reserved.
vidas? ¿Hijos dispuestos a confiar? ¿Quién es Cristo para
nosotros hoy? Texto: James A. Wilde, PhD. © 1998, OCP. Derechos

DAUGHTERS OF DIVINE ZEAL – MISSION
APPEAL
The weekend of April 23-24 Sr. Mary Lilly, a
native of India and a member of the Daughters
of Divine Zeal will be here for the Mission
Appeal. The “Daughters of Divine Zeal” is an
international religious congregation founded by St.
Hannibal Di Francia in 1887. Their spirituality is
founded on the command of Jesus to “Pray the Lord
of the Harvest to send workers into his harvest.” (Mt.
9: 37-38; Lk. 10:2). The sisters’ ministries include:
parish and missionary works, evangelization, social
work for human and Christian advancement –
schools, homes for the elderly, nutrition centers and
clinics. Some sisters are presently working at the St.
Salle School in Reedley, CA. Sr. Mary Lilly will be
speaking at all the Masses on Saturday and Sunday.
The proceeds from this appeal will benefit the
formation of Novices and young sisters, and
orphaned children in our mission in India. The
Daughters of Divine Zeal sisters will remember you
and your family in prayer. May God bless you all for
your generosity!

Christian Symbols 101
We see these images in stained glass windows,
websites and other religious literatures. But
where did they come from and what do they
mean? Here is some background…
Símbolos Cristianos 101
Podemos ver estás imágenes en ventanas de
cristal, sitios web, y otras literatures religiosas.
¿Pero de dónde provienen y qué significan? Aquí
hay algunos antecedents...
Chi-Rho: This Greek symbol, first
used by pagan rulers in military
standards, superimposes the Greek
letters chi (shaped like an X) and rho
(shaped like a P) upon each other. It
was adopted by Christians because
these are the first letters in the title
“Christ”, and because the cross shape
evokes the Crucifixion.
Chi-Rho: Este simbolo Griego,
primero utilizados por los gobernantes
paganos en estánderes militares,
superpone las letras Griegas chi (en
forma de una X) y rho (en forma de P)
mutuamente. Fue adoptado por
Cristianos porque son las primeras
letras en el título “Cristo,” y porque las
forma de la Cruz evoca la Crucifixión.
