FIRST READING
Exodus 17:8-13 (147C)
When Moses raised his arms to God in prayer,
the battle went well. So Aaron and Hur
supported his arms, lest the attackers defeat
Israel. By sunset, Israel won the fight.
SECOND READING
2 Timothy 3:14 - 4:2
Paul urged Timothy to remain faithful to
sacred Scripture because God inspired it.
God’s inspired word, the source of wisdom in
Christ, helps people learn goodness and
holiness.
GOSPEL READING
Luke 18:1-8
Jesus taught a lesson about the power of
persistent prayer by telling the story of a
persistent widow who wore down a corrupt
judge by continually demanding her rights.
The judge issued a settlement in her favor, lest
she do him in.

The Month of October is dedicated to
Venerable Pierre Toussaint
Pierre Toussaint was born into slavery in Haiti in the
late 18th century, but died a freeman in New York
City on June 30, 1853. Pierre was a man of great
faith, who lived his life in generous service of others--- regardless of race or religious beliefs. He is
credited by many with being the “Father of Catholic
Charities” in New York City. Pierre was a successful
entrepreneur, who did not hesitate to share the fruits
of his labor with others. In recognition of his virtuous
life, Pierre was declared “ Venerable” by Pope John
Paul II in 1997. During this Year of Faith, the United
States Bishops have designated Venerable Pierre
Toussaint as the Venerable Person for the Month of
October, 2013.
