Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church TOWER NEWSLETTER THE Volume 162, Number 45 March 13, 2016 28th Annual Community Easter Sunrise Service Please make your plans now to join us at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 27, at the First Security Amphitheatre in Riverfront Park for the 28th Annual Community Easter Sunrise Service. Once again, PHUMC is planning, coordinating, and sponsoring this special event, which will include representatives from other churches, schools, and community organizations. Over the years thousands have attended this uplifting service held on the banks of the Arkansas River in downtown Little Rock and open to all. Our own Reverend Britt Skarda will deliver a message of hope, and various community members will offer greetings, prayers, songs, and scripture readings. An offering will be collected for Immerse Arkansas, a program that prepares older and former foster youth for adulthood by connecting them to existing resources and sustainable networks of support. Participants in this year’s service will include Rev. Carissa Rogers, Pastor of Quapaw Quarter UMC; Rev. William Robinson, Pastor of First Baptist Church - NLR; Kevin Scanlon, Former Arkansas Razorback Football Player; Mallory Brooks, KARK Channel 4 News; and Eric Gilmore, Director of Immerse Arkansas. Liturgical Dance will be offered by New Creation Dance. Music will be offered by Justified, Ozark Point Brass, Veena Akama-Makia, and the combined choirs of PHUMC, First Baptist Church - NLR, and St. Edward Catholic Church. Gather with us at the river as we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ! We look forward to seeing you there. IN TRIBUTE TO WAYNE LINDSEY Wayne Lindsey pictured with appreciation plaque presented by Bill Mann on Jan. 31. In 2005 when Phil Dixon passed away, I was asked to assume the responsibility of coordinating the scheduling of ushers for the traditional services held in the sanctuary. Of course, nobody could replace Phil but I set out to do the best I could. One of the mainstay ushers at the time, upon whom I relied heavily, was Wayne Lindsey. Wayne was and is the most loyal and dependable usher to ever serve at PHUMC. He has been a fixture at the front door of the church, welcoming members and guests with a warm smile and greeting. Please bring plastic egg donations/or bags of candy by this Sunday, Mar. 13. Recent Baptisms Late last year, Wayne told me that it was time for him to step down. Those were words I did not want to hear. But, Wayne was firm in his decision. Our church has been fortunate for as long as I can remember to have Wayne as an usher. He is faithful, caring and one of the finest gentlemen I have had the pleasure to have known. I hope you will join me in thanking Wayne for his many years of dedication to PHUMC and the usher ministry. All of us who serve as ushers will miss him, but we are all better ushers as a result of his example. Bill Mann Scott Carter Smart, Jr. with parents Margo & Scott Smart The PHUMC Columbarium Garden Board recently announced that Jennifer Shannon has been asked to serve as Executive Director. The Staff Parish Relations Committee approved this decision. Jennifer will assume the position recently vacated by Rev. Lynn Lindsey, who retired January 31, 2016. She has served with faithfulness and competence as Assistant to the Director for over five years. She is married to Mike Shannon and they are the parents of Alex, Claire, Robert, and Beth. She and Mike have been active PHUMC members since 1993, serving in many capacities in Children, Youth, and Administration Ministries. Jennifer will guide Guy Dillahunty, Board Chair, and the Columbarium Board in its policies and procedures. She will work with the clergy staff and church administrator in the planning of inurnments and interments in this very important ministry. Jennifer is very dedicated to the ministry of the Columbarium Garden and will be happy to assist PHUMC members and their families in any way. She can be reached at 978-0533.
