Notre Dame Academy Names New Principal Meet NDA’s New Principal, Mr. Jack VonHandorf From the President Greetings Alumnae, Parents and Friends of Notre Dame Academy, Celebrating Sisterhood - Our 2014–15 school year was, in so many ways, a true celebration of sisterhood at NDA. This summer issue of the Notre Damian highlights many parts of that story, celebrating students, alumnae, faculty, and friends of NDA. The class of 2015 is an outstanding example of the success of our school year and an ongoing expression of our mission to educate young women to make a difference in our world. With over $14 million in scholarship offers, these young women have excelled in academics, athletics, the arts and service. As our newest Alumnae, pursuing opportunities at 32 different colleges in 13 different states, they are poised to welcome the many challenges and opportunities that await them. Most importantly, they begin the next phase of their journey with a sense of confidence, courage and hope. This year I have had the opportunity to connect with many other Alumnae who are women making a difference in their own way. I have also met many NDA supporters who make an excellent Catholic education a reality at our school through the time, talent and treasure they so generously give. Our spiritual mother, St. Julie Billiart, invites us to have “hearts as wide as the world.” This call to open our hearts to the world begins and ends with a deep sense of gratitude for all those who support our Notre Dame education. While we give thanks for the past and celebrate the present, we must also anticipate and plan for the future. We challenge ourselves to continuous improvement through our Strategic Plan: Building Confidence, Celebrating Excellence, and Enabling a Future without Boundaries. This plan includes facility enhancements that reinforce our Catholic identity, support our commitment to innovation in student learning, provide for a spirited and vibrant community and offer accessibility for all who learn, teach and visit at NDA. Please watch for more details as the plan develops. As I complete my fifth year as principal and first year as president, I’m excited to welcome our first male principal, Mr. Jack VonHandorf, to our leadership team. Mr. VonHandorf brings a wealth of experience as a teacher and educational leader. He has personally experienced the charism of the Sisters of Notre Dame through many family members who are NDA Alumnae. (Please see more about Mr. VonHandorf on page 6.) I am confident that we will work well together, along with our dedicated faculty and staff, to ensure the tradition and legacy of our Notre Dame education and lead our school in preparing young women to be courageous and faithful leaders serving our world. I hope you enjoy reading about the many women of NDA and all those who support them. May you know God’s goodness each day, Dr. Laura Dickman Koehl ‘75 Our Newest Alumnae CLASS OF 2015 We proudly welcome the following graduates to the ranks of the Notre Dame Academy Alumnae Association and wish them success as they enter the next phase of their lives. For the first time in its 109-year history, students will address their new principal as “Mister.” In mid-April, Notre Dame Academy President Dr. Laura Koehl announced that NDA had selected its next Principal. After an extensive search process that included several well-qualified candidates, Mr. Jack VonHandorf was named principal of Notre Dame Academy. He began serving in his new position on July 1, 2015. Mr. VonHandorf is uniquely qualified to be the next Principal of NDA. He has 27 years of experience in education as a high school teacher and administrator. Mr. VonHandorf has demonstrated a strong commitment to Catholic education as a successful math teacher, Dean of Students, and in his most recent role as the interim Upper School Director at Summit Country Day School in Cincinnati. He also has experience in athletics as a coach and collegiate Assistant Athletic Director. Mr. VonHandorf is a graduate of NKU with a B.S. in Mathematics and M.A. in Education. Mr. VonHandorf has a personal connection to and appreciation for the heritage and charism of the Sisters of Notre Dame. “I feel honored to be in this role knowing the positive impact it has had in shaping the lives of generations of women in my family. My mom, my sisters, my wife and daughter are all graduates of Notre Dame Academy, and they attribute much of their success to their experiences at NDA,” says Mr. VonHandorf. Through his work at Summit, Mr. VonHandorf has developed knowledge of St. Julie Billiart’s spirituality and the value of a Notre Dame education. His own educational experience includes two schools within the Diocese of Covington: St. Augustine and Covington Catholic. His educational philosophy and approach to leadership are formed by this experience and consistent with the SND tradition. Dr. Koehl, NDA’s first lay Principal and now first lay President, served as both Principal and President for NDA during the 2014-15 school year. She is very pleased to welcome Mr. VonHandorf to the administrative leadership team at NDA. “The President/Principal leadership model has served NDA well, and I look forward to working with Mr. VonHandorf to advance the mission of Notre Dame Academy and work towards continuous school improvement and success,” said Dr. Koehl. She added, “I trust our NDA community will find him a very capable educator and trustworthy leader who will work effectively with all stakeholders to make sure NDA continues its tradition of excellence in SND education.” Mr. VonHandorf is married to Terri Meyer VonHandorf ‘88. They have two children, Drew and Kylie. Welcome to NDA, Mr. VonHandorf! Campus Notes NDA’s MAY CROWING TRADITION 10 NDA STUDENTS SELECTED FOR KY GOVERNOR’S SCHOOL PROGRAMS The Kentucky Governor’s Scholars Program (GSP) recently announced that seven Notre Dame Academy students have been named Governor’s Scholars for 2015 with one as an alternate. Audrey Field and Kimmy Birrer (below, right) were selected as alternates. On Friday, May 1, the NDA community gathered to honor Mary by crowning her their Queen. As is the NDA tradition, the honor of Crowning Mary went to a senior. All seniors were invited to submit a reflection about Mary and how they have viewed her as a role model. This year the honor of crowning Mary went to Shannon Wilson. Brittany Whtie carried Mary’s crown in the procession. Samantha Darpel, Rosemary Plunkett, Abigail Kennedy, and Hailee Scheper made up the honor guard. All six of these young ladies showed great devotion and appreciation for our Blessed Mother in their reflections. The Notre Damian | Summer 2015 7 CLASS OF 2015 HONORED AT ACADEMIC SIGNING On Wednesday, May 13, Notre Dame Academy held an Academic Signing in honor of the Class of 2015 for their outstanding academic achievements. NDA’s Class of 2015 earned over $14 million in scholarship offers. Over 50 seniors (39% of the class) received at least half the cost of tuition through scholarships and grants at the institutions they plan to attend. This is a true testimony to the education and preparation young women receive at NDA! CELEBRATING SISTERHOOD NDA students participated in the Orange and White Flag Football Game this year with St. Ursula. Together the NDA and St. Ursula communities raised $4,705.50 for Leukemia research at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Not only did the NDA Pandas raise money for a great cause, but more importantly, they joined their sisters across the river to remember Natalie Bradley, an Ursulan student who lost her battle to Leukemia. The St. Ursula Bulldogs may have won the game but the NDA Pandas certainly took the prize for school spirit! Next year, NDA will host the event. NATIONAL HISTORY DAY WINNERS NDA had two winners at the National History Day state contest held at the University of Kentucky this spring. Both groups won first place and qualified to compete at the national contest at the University of Maryland this summer. 1st place senior group documentary on Benazir Bhutto: Harper Lamb, Paige Montfort, Brooke Schulte, and Julia James. 8 The Notre Damian | Summer 2015 1st place senior group performance on Princess Diana: Lauren Reinersman, Bridget Plunkett, Alecia Radford, and Liz Urban. TOP HONORS for CLASS OF 2015 Upcoming Events July 29 Each year at NDA’s Senior Breakfast, a graduate is awarded the Distinguished Graduate Award from the Sisters of Notre Dame. This year, two NDA seniors were recognized with this special award. Shannon Wilson and Paige Hignite both received the Distinguished Graduate Award from the Sisters of Notre Dame. The Sisters of Notre Dame Distinguished Graduate Award recognizes graduates in schools sponsored by or affiliated with the Sisters of Notre Dame National Education Partnership, as being outstanding witnesses to Notre Dame education. The names of the award recipients are recorded each year in a book kept in the Motherhouse (international headquarters) of the Sisters in Rome, Italy. Its place is on the altar dedicated to Sr. Maria Aloysia, the founder of the Coesfeld SNDs and an outstanding educator. Hope to see you all there! The Notre Damian | Summer 2015 15 Advancement Dear Friends of Notre Dame, Three years ago I decided to leave my nine-year position as Notre Dame Development Director and set sail for a life of relaxation. While the time off certainly afforded me the opportunity to travel and spend more time with my family, in the quiet times I quickly discovered that I was not very good at “leisure.” I don’t know how to quilt, my homemade jams are not prize-worthy, and one can only read so many books. I discovered that I needed more, so when the position of Major Gifts Coordinator became available, I decided that I was ready to get back in the game and accept the challenge. Needless to say, I am very happy to be back at Notre Dame Academy. Over the past three years, some faces have come and gone. Although the Sisters of Notre Dame continue to sponsor Notre Dame Academy, the leadership of the school has now been entrusted to a lay person, Dr. Laura Koehl. It has also hired its first male principal, Mr. Jack VonHandorf. It is an honor to work with such capable individuals who will lead NDA into its bright future. While my title has changed, so many of my responsibilities remain the same. I will be working closely to cultivate relationships with our alumnae, parents, and supporters of NDA. It will be my responsibility to oversee the Corporate Sponsorship program and to increase the number of scholarships which will provide more need-based tuition assistance and additional revenue. I will also work closely with Dr.Koehl to secure capital funding for facilities that will allow Notre Dame Academy to remain competitive and innovative in the 21st century. As I continue to settle into my new role, I have had the wonderful opportunity to rekindle so many of my past relationships with our alumnae and friends of Notre Dame. I am excited and look forward to meeting and cultivating many new ones in the days and months ahead. I can’t promise you a pint of jam, but you will get a sincere hello and help where I can. My door is always open. Sincerely, Nancy Goeke Major Gifts Coordinator SCHOLARSHIPS PROVIDE LASTING LEGACIES Would you like to create a meaningful legacy for your family or loved one? Establishing a perpetually named scholarship at Notre Dame is a wonderful way to honor an individual or group, while at the same time providing essential student tuition assistance to deserving students who will benefit from your generosity and commitment to educating women to make a difference. Scholarships may be created at the $10,000 level or greater. The funds are kept in the Notre Dame Endowment Fund and are invested in a variety of ways, including stocks and bonds to generate income. Each year, five per cent of the money invested is awarded in the form of NDA scholarships and grants, or is applied to programming needs as determined by the establishing party of each scholarship. When you decide to create a perpetually named scholarship at NDA, you make the decision regarding the profile of the student(s) who become your recipients. Would you like your recipient to excel in a particular subject area? Should they demonstrate a sincere financial need or come from an inner city school? The decision is yours. Your generosity will allow Notre Dame Academy the freedom to provide more need-based tuition assistance and additional revenue which will serve as an effective counterbalance against spiraling tuition increases. It will enable NDA to continue its investment in a highly trained and skilled faculty, the backbone of the NDA program. This year, through the generosity of its benefactors, Notre Dame Academy was able to distribute over $750,000 in much-needed tuition assistance. However, the needs are escalating, and your generosity is needed more than ever. For further information regarding the establishment of scholarships and endowments, please contact NDA Major Gifts Coordinator, Nancy Goeke, at 859.292.1851 or goeken@ndapandas.org. 16 The Notre Damian | Summer 2015 Would You Like to Become a Corporate Sponsor? The Notre Dame Academy Corporate Sponsorship program continues to provide successful partnerships between NDA and the local community. As a corporate partner with us, you’ll have the opportunity to showcase your product and gain exposure to local consumers. As a partner, you will gain advertising opportunities to those who directly impact your business. Furthermore, you will experience important business and networking opportunities with other professionals like yourself. The Corporate Sponsorship program offers four different sponsorship levels: Diamond, Platinum, Gold, and Silver. The cost for each sponsorship varies and provides attendance, advertising incentives, and other benefits for the annual Women Making A Difference Luncheon, the NDA Golf Outing, and the Autumn Gala. The program allows sponsors the benefit of supporting NDA on a year-round basis. A Corporate Sponsorship also offers the opportunity to invest in the lives of young women and future leaders in our community. A sponsorship with Notre Dame Academy sends a message that the sponsor’s brand is strongly aligned with our mission to educate young women to make a difference in the world. We appreciate the opportunity to work with you as you invest in the lives of young women and future leaders in our community. To request a brochure or to get further information about becoming a corporate sponsor for Notre Dame, please contact Nancy Goeke, Major Gifts Coordinator, at goeken@ndapandas.org or 859.292.1851.
