C. RAY WHITAKER, 33° Treasurer WILLIAM F. STOVALL, 33° Sovereign Grand Inspector General in California ILL. RONALD A. SEALE, 33° Sovereign Grand Commander RICHARD PARIS, 33° Personal Representative SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN 3 From the Personal Representative Greetings Brethren and Ladies, I can’t believe it is already June. Our May 5th Children’s Language Center 20 Year Celebration is over. I want to congratulate Dale Hammel 32° and James Wilson 32° KCCH for an outstanding evening. Thanks to everyone who helped make this a memorable evening. Thanks to our Director Tom Tatum who gave a synopsis of the last twenty years of helping children with speech difficulties. We are very fortunate to have Tom Tatum as the Director of our Fresno Clinic; he makes it look so easy. Tom loves children and they love him. We were honored to have the Illustrious William F. Stovall 33° Sovereign Grand Inspector General and Illustrious Ray Godeke, Vice Chairman of the California Scottish Rite Foundation in attendance. Illustrious Stovall gave a short but informative talk and then presented a check in the amount of $1000.00 for the Fresno clinic. I want to thank all of our 2012 Officers for their attendance and dedication to Scottish Rite. Good leadership means so much in any organization. I thank both Bill Pfister and Mike Lewis of you for your leadership in membership. Most of all, thanks to those brethren who are working hard to bring new members into Scottish Rite. New membership is so vital to our organization; however, the goal is to keep the new members attending. The best way to do that is make him feel like he is part of Scottish Rite. I ask all of you brethren to reach out and welcome those new members so they will feel like they joined an organization that is friendly. I hope to see all of you at the Fishing Derby at Shaver Lake June 23rd where the fisherman will come in with those trophy fish and have some real fisherman stories. The summer schedule is here. We will visit Mariposa on June 18, travel to Tulare on July 16 and on to Merced on August 20. Brethren please come and travel with us. The out a town members travel each month to Fresno. I think it is time that we support them by visiting their Town. We will leave Fresno Scottish Rite at 5:00 pm. If you need a ride call the office and Lou will arrange a ride for you. We will be back in Fresno September 10th for the Executive meeting and on the17th for the September Stated dinner meeting. Richard Paris Personal Representative SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN 4 From the Venerable Master Brethren, Our 20 year celebration at The Ramada Inn was a great event. Many of the people that helped start and supported the Clinic these past twenty years were honored. Brother William Stovall 33˚ SGIG of California and California Foundation Chairman spoke and let us know how many children have been helped. It was one of those evenings that everyone in attendance was happy and enjoyed themselves. Our Fishing Derby Fundraiser is this month and it is not too late to join us at Shaver Lake on June 23rd. Please come and join us even if it’s just for one of Allen Miller’s hamburgers. They say they are catching big fish from the shore. Moving from one Fundraiser to the next; it is time to ask for help with our annual Dinner Auction. Our Chairmen Vince Carter and Tommy Hyatt have the location at the International Catering Company on N West and Ashlan with an Indoor Garden Theme. Our fine Wine Stewards, Lou Jelinek and Dick Paris have already started stocking up for a fine evening. We are asking for donations of new items for our live or silent auction this year. New items or cash donations are appreciated; the cash donations will be used to purchase items to be auctioned the night of the dinner. The invitations and dinner choices will be showing up soon either in the Bulletin or mail. Please plan on joining us. Parents of one of children who have been treated at the Clinic will be in attendance to share the difference our clinic has made in their families’ lives. I will not end this message by saying how fast the year is going by, but it is. Jim Wilson, Venerable Master, Lodge of Perfection From the Wise Master Brethren, In the bulletin last month I placed an article about creating a Sunshine Committee. Based on the response to the article, it wasn’t read by anyone, or no one was interested enough to call and offer help. So once again I pose the question to the membership: Do we want to have a “Sunshine Committee”? Do we need to have communication with those that are ill or in need? Does the membership want to know about other member’s needs or illnesses? If these questions start you thinking about wanting to help and discuss this with another brother, please give me a call 439-7932 or Juliet at the Scottish Rite Office. Please give us direction. Is this something membership wants??? Dale Hammel, Wise Master SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN 5 From The Commander, Council Kadosh Brethren At the last Ring Rose and Cap Ceremony I spoke about our Scottish Rite Ring. A single flat band of gold engraved with an equilateral triangle containing the Hebrew letter “Yod” located in the center of the triangle. It is the ring of the Perfect Elu in the 14th degree. The ring’s circular shape expresses the never ending bond between Masons of all generations. The equilateral triangle reminds us of the deity. The Hebrew letter “Yod” is the first letter of the ineffable name of God. This letter reminds us of what was lost in the Third Degree and was found later in the Scottish Rite Degrees of Perfection. Engraved on the inside of the ring is the inscription “Virtus Junxit Mors Non Separabit” which translates to Whom Virtue unites, death will not separate or What Virtue has united, death cannot separate. There is no “correct” way to wear the ring it can be worn on any finger and the engraved triangle can point either inward or outward as you like. At the death of the owner, the ring should be given to his widow, an eldest son, a friend who is highly respected or a Scottish Rite Mason. Under no circumstances should the ring be worn by anyone who is not a 14th degree Scottish Rite Mason. I received my father in-law’s Scottish Rite ring and wear that ring on my little finger. This ring was awarded to him at our valleys 1949 reunion more than 64 years ago. The earliest record of a 14th degree ring goes back to the Francken manuscript of 1783. The ring that was worn over 229 years ago was slightly different then our current ring, at that time it was just a plain band of gold with the current inscription engraved on the inside of the ring. At some point in the late 19th century the Supreme Council of the Northern Jurisdiction altered the ring and added the triangle and “Yod” symbol. Our Southern Jurisdiction later adopted this design as well and we find that design still in use today. Brethren when you wear your Scottish Rite ring remember that it is not just a piece of jewelry but it is the symbol of our fraternity. Wear it proudly and with the honor it is due. Bill Pfister 32º KCCH Commander of the Council of Kadosh Building a Scholarship Donations Thank you to all who are supporting “Building a Scholarship” fund. Your continued donations will allow us to expand our scholarship program and continue to support the deserving students of the C.A.R.T. School. Donations made this month by: Richard Berger, Clyde & Patricia Johnson, Allan D. Miller, and Elmer Schott. As a Scholarship Fundraiser we have Masonic Magnetic red white & blue car remembrance ribbons and circles with Relief, Truth and Brotherly Love and the Masonic emblem in the center available at the Scottish Rite Office for $5.00. p SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN 6 From The Master Of Kadosh I would like to thank all of my Brothers and Masonic family members for their support and encouragement this past month. I am slowly, but surely, recovering from my illness. May was a busy month with the 20 year Celebration, Americanism & Patriotism awards, CART scholarships and JROTC presentations. A sincere thank you to everyone that helped make each of these events a success. We are beginning our summer activities and the upcoming events are extremely important for raising money for the Children’s Language Disorders Center. I hope you will help by getting the information out to the community and participating in the events personally. June 23rd - Scottish Rite Fishing Derby at Shaver Lake. We need sponsors to help defray the costs involved in putting this event on. Please contact the Venerable Master Jim Wilson II, 32° KCCH, if you can help in any way. Our Children’s Language Disorders Center is consistently providing quality service to the children of our community. We need to increase the hours available for treatment and that requires funding. For every $50 donated to the Clinic - a child receives an hour of treatment. In closing, I am truly grateful and extremely thankful for the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the children within our community. I am proud to be a Mason, knowing my efforts help make the world (and myself) better, one child at a time. Fraternally, David S. Kelley, 32° ROTC B.R. Hollenbeck, 33° Again this year, I wish to acknowledge the special and outstanding work of those Brothers who came forward and volunteered to help make presentations in this year’s Reserve Officer Training Corps at Fresno State University and Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps at several valley high schools awards presentation ceremonies. It had been almost exclusively the very hard and dedicated efforts of Ill. Warren Hill, 33° and Ill. Ronald Markarian, 33° and the office staff that combined over the years to handle the organization and presentations of these awards. This year for various reasons, including the unfortunate passing of Ill. Warren Hill 33°, we had a short notice requirement for help. Thankfully, the very hard working Brothers Harry Crider, 32°, Henry Howard, 32° and the Ill. James Sperlich, 33° stepped up and were able to help in the handling of all the required presentations. The annual effort selects superior students from the various high school and college venues for special recognition. The young people are rewarded with certificates and medals to acknowledge their hard work as well as their support of Americanism and Patriotism. They were selected to receive the annual Fresno Scottish Rite Bodies Certificate of Merit, Achievement, and Excellence in support of the Nation, based on peer and supervisor recommendations. I was caused to again reflect on the greatness of the youth of this nation and the generosity of the members of these Fresno Scottish Rite Bodies for recognition of these superior student efforts. During the evening that you were raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason the grip of a Master Mason helped raise the body of Hiram Abiff out of the grave. Do you know what that symbolizes? 2. The Scottish Rite black silk cap is embossed with a double headed eagle. Do you understand what the double headed eagle represents? 3. At the Ring, Rose and Cap Ceremony you received a Scottish Rite Certificate informing the world that you are now a “Master of the Royal Secret.” Do you know what the Royal Secret is? Can you carry on a meaningful conversation regarding this subject? These are only three of many questions pertaining to our ancient craft that we should know. Do you know the answer to these questions? Do you care to know? I fear that most of the Brethren think of our fraternity only in terms of pleasant association in the lodge and charity. They may know the rituals but fail to understand its meanings. Freemasonry teaches by symbols and by allegory. Scottish Rite and Craft Lodges are not “Cliff’s Notes” whereby one can find an instant answer to these and other questions. The challenge each Mason face is to commit to traveling that road which will eventually lead to discovering those answers. It is not quick nor is it easy. But the results will yield a much greater personal satisfaction than just a framed certificate hanging on the wall. Brother John L. Tracy 32° REGIONAL ORIENT MEMBERSHIP AMBASSADOR MESSAGE Scottish Rite membership is our key to success. It is built on Faith, Hope and Charity. We must not lull ourselves into thinking that we need not replace the membership losses that we suffer through deaths, demits and those members who have been suspended for non-payment of dues. New members are essential. Every devoted Scottish Rite Mason is a resource who can and should talk about our great and ancient Order to those who are worthy and well-qualified. Masonic history is untainted by crime or cruelty. Masons have always has been devoted to the discovery of the truth and our fidelity to principle is unquestionable. Masonic history and principle are our selling points! A great philosopher has said that “One truth discovered is immortal, and entitles its author to be so; for, like a new substance in nature, it cannot be destroyed.” Masonry has ever been engaged in discovering new truths. In endeavoring to preserve from obscurity the old truths that make our institution worthy of immortal honor, we perform the sacred work of brotherly love, relief and truth. Even though at times we are weary, we must step down heavily on the membership accelerator pedal. Upon our ancient and honorable Order and each of our members lies the responsibility of preserving intact the sacred privilege of helping our Fraternity continue to seek and champion truth through growing our membership. Durward C. Ayre Durward C. Ayre 32° KCCH / MC Regional Orient Membership Ambassador for the Valleys of San Jose, Fresno and San Francisco in California SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN 11 FROM THE CO-EDITOR B.R. Hollenbeck, 33° It has been the duty of the Consistory over the years to oversee the Education, Americanism and Scholarship programs of the Bodies. I am happy to report they were again this year, a great success. I would like to thank everyone for your help and support during the past few months. Thanks to the generosity of the Fresno Scottish Rite membership we were able to award scholarships at the CART school to very deserving students for their continuing education at the college level. The opportunity to present the annual scholarships to deserving senior high school students from the C.A.R.T. School at the last stated meeting was a memorable opportunity. The students and their families as well as everyone in attendance at the stated meeting seemed to enjoy the presentations. I wish to acknowledge the special and outstanding work of Brothers Bill Neal, 32° and David Kelley, 32° who were the backbone of the judging efforts where in three superior students were selected to receive the annual Fresno Scottish Rite Bodies Scholarships. This event again should cause all of us to reflect on the greatness of the youth of this nation and the generosity of the members of these Fresno Scottish Rite Bodies. The Americanism and Education efforts of the Tulare School District and the Roeding Elementary School were very well received and made for a great year. The Scottish Rite Bodies through the Consistory have for the past few years sponsored notable efforts in this area. The foremost is that of encouraging Patriotism and Americanism in the elementary grades in Fresno Unified School District. In Tulare Olive Branch Lodge #269 sponsors and handles the task in an outstanding manor. Thanks to Ill. Allan Miller 33º and Robert Myers 32º KCCH the task goes on every year almost unnoticed by those of us in Fresno. However this year the local Tulare paper again did an outstanding feature article on the work of the lodge. Over 1000 Tulare 5th Grade students participated in that school district. At the same time we in Fresno were working with the Roeding Elementary Schools 5th grade classes. This year after judging the student’s posters and essays, we were able to make presentations to the best poster and essay recipient at a school assembly and later to the first place winners at the April Stated meeting. We found it most rewarding to work with the outstanding students, teachers, and their very hard working principal. We are aware that not everyone had the privilege of hearing Anastesia Lopez, one of the students, read her essay, or seeing the poster by Angelo Burton, so we have included them below. We judged Miss Lopez and Mr. Burtons’ hand written essay and poster they where heartfelt, well thought out, and we felt, superb. Tulare Scottish Rite Club News Hope all had a great time at the business meeting at Perko’s in Porterville. On 17 June, we will be able to taste Allen’s famous Tri tip again at the annual BBQ Summer party at his place at 497 E Sandra in Tulare. The event is potluck. A-F Salad, G-L Appetizer and drinks, M-R Main Dish, S-Z Dessert. We kick everything off at 5:00 pm. It should be a fun evening, as always. Our 17 August gathering will be a short business meeting at 6:30 and dinner at Ryan’s. The address is 3103 S. Mooney Blvd. Have a great summer.
