Larger solar panels are powering homes, road signs, call boxes, buoys and lights. Photovoltaics -- which were once used almost exclusively in space, powering satellites' electrical systems as far back as 1958 -- are being used more and more in less exotic ways. The technology continues to pop up in new devices all the time, from sunglasses to electric vehicle charging stations. The idea that one day we'll all use free electricity from the Sun, sounds like an exciting prospect because on a bright, sunny day, the sun's rays give off approximately 1,000 watts of energy per square meter of the planet's surface. If we could collect all of that energy, we could easily power our homes and offices for free. Photovoltaic cells are made of special materials called semiconductors such as silicon, which is currently used most commonly. Basically, when light strikes the cell, a certain portion of it is absorbed within the semiconductor material. This means that the energy of the absorbed light is transferred to the semiconductor. The energy knocks electrons loose, allowing them to flow freely. PV cells also all have one or more electric field that acts to force electrons freed by light absorption to flow in a certain direction. This flow of electrons is a current, and by placing metal contacts on the top and bottom of the PV cell, we can draw that current off for external use, say, to power a calculator. This current, together with the cell's voltage (which is a result of its built-in electric field or fields), defines the power (or wattage) that the solar cell can produce. That's the basic process, but there's really much more to it. So students who are interested should go to the Internet or refer to relevant books to learn more. The solar cells on calculators and satellites are also called photovoltaic (PV) cells, which as the name implies (photo meaning light and voltaic meaning electricity), convert sunlight directly into electricity. A module is a group of cells connected electrically and packaged into a frame (more commonly known as a solar panel), which can then be grouped into larger solar arrays. 05 LAPORAN KHAS HARI GURU 2014 DISAMBUT DENGAN MERIAH "May 16 every year is celebrated as Teachers' Day throughout the country to give appreciation to the deeds and sacrifices made by the teachers who had TOKOH GURU KEBANGSAAN Berasal dari Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Tengku Azuan memulakan karier sebagai guru pada 1976 di Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Zainab sebelum bersara pada 9 Oktober 2007. A study team is travelling to all the schools to observe the use of i-THINK methodologies in teaching and learning. The objective of the study is to determine the Showcase Schools’ receptiveness of the i-THINK programme practices that illustrates programme adoption. The study will also help examine the schools current capacity to implement the i-THINK Programme and identify processes that require improvement apart from measuring the impact of thinking skills in teaching and learning. The study will also assess the Senior Leadership role in monitoring the i-THINK Programme, determine students awareness, application and understanding of Thinking Maps and Habits of Mind and also gauge parents awareness of the i-THINK Programme. The assessment exercise includes review of school planning and operational documents, learning walks (surveying different learning environments), review lesson plans and observe the conducting of lessons. The team will also conduct focus group interviews with Heads of Schools, PK1, PGK Hem, PK Ko-Ko, teachers, students, JPN/PPD and parents. 08 SMK Convent Muar, Johor; SMK Kota Marudu, Sabah; SK Tan Sri Datuk Haji Mohamed, Sarawak; SMK Gaal, Kelantan; SMK Tun Hussein Onn, Pulau Pinang; SJK (T) Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan; SK Paya Pulai, Pahang; SK Kiaramas, Kuala Lumpur; SJK(C) Wen Hua, Melaka; and SK Pusat Bukit Besar, Terengganu. 09 LEARNING Workshops on IBMYP in selected schools The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme workshops to introduce IBMYP to teachers and parents were held in May in selected schools in Pahang, Sarawak, Kelantan and Putrajaya. The IBMYP Introductory Workshop for Teachers and Parents held in Pahang, Sarawak, Kelantan and Putrajaya are aimed at highlighting the teaching and learning of IB and the elements that are involved in the programme. The workshops are designed to encourage and enable participants to understand that the mission and philosophy of the programme support an assessment driven, learner-centred environment. The participants were informed that the MYP is a framework that is designed to help students find a sense of belonging in an ever-changing and increasingly interrelated world. It was also highlighted that the IBMYP helps create conceptually-based and contextually-grounded MYP units that engage student inquiry. The workshops also helped the participants understand that the MYP assessment model was criterion-related and is not intended as a way to compare one student’s progress to another. Parents were also exposed to the philosophy of the IBMYP, the benefits of the programme and how they can support the students and school in the implementation of the programme. One of the aims of the workshops is to introduce the IBMYP to teachers and parents so that they get a better understanding of what the students would be exposed to when they embark on the programme. The workshops will continue in other schools over the next few months. It is defined by six global contexts for teaching and learning that are developed from and extend the PYP's transdisciplinary themes explored using knowledge and skills derived from eight subject areas, with a powerful emphasis on inquiry-based learning and is flexible enough to accommodate the demands of most national or local curriculums and provides the best preparation for students to engage in the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. 10 11 GALERI n o s p o h s k r Wo IBMYP SMK Sg Tapang, Sarawak SMK Seri Tualang, Pahang 12 13 LEARNING Flies in the air Size cannot change Runs only on kerosene Modes of Transport Revisiting Double Bubble Maps Runs on rails For people & goods Able to add carriages Various fuels used Driven by engines The Double Bubble Map is useful to compare and contrast two things, issues or ideas. In the drawing of the map some of the key words that can be used to churn out the contents for the map are compare, contrast, similarities, differences, distinguish between and differentiate. The map is drawn with two circles with words of the two things, issues or ideas that need to be compared - one at the left and another at the right. Then draw circles (middle bubbles) between the two large circles where words and phrases that indicate similarities are written. Outside bubbles connected to the two circles which show the things, issues and ideas to be compared are drawn for words or phrases that identify the differences. This is an example of a question: What are the similarities and differences between Datuk Lee Chong Wei and Datuk Nicol David? The tree map is used for classifying a main idea and its supporting details. It helps sort things and ideas into categories or groups. When creating the Tree Map you have to write the category name or the main idea of the topic on the top line. Then add a connecting line down to link to individual sub-categories or supporting ideas. Below each sub-category or supporting idea you can add lines for the specific members of the category or specific details for the supporting ideas. Tree Maps can also be used for an informal grouping of themes, concepts or ideas or for gathering details about story elements. Digitising Malaysia's Education Co-organised by the Ministry of Education Malaysia, MDeC and Terrapinn, the Digital Education Show Asia hosted 60 seminars where the delegates exchanged information and expert opinion. Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin whose speech was read at the event reminded the people on the contrasting relationship between information and communication technology (ICT) and education. “ICT does make a difference. And I think, this is our stand. We cannot afford to take a chance with the future of Malaysia,” he said. Muhyiddin said he was keenly aware that ICT and technology changed at a faster rate than change at the school level. “Education thus needs to be flexible in incorporating ICT in schools. I also fear that the rate of technological change may result in teachers who are perpetually novices at technology. “Other dangers such as social and ethical challenges need to be addressed. A coherent and structured implementation needs to accommodate these changes as well as support the inclusion and participatory nature of technology and society,” he added. Deputy Minister of Education P. Kamalanathan said MOE was targeting 100 percent 4G internet connection in schools nationwide by next year. “We are still short of 14 percent and will reach it by 2015. Focus is on schools in remote areas that have access to 2G internet,” he said. Among the topics that were discussed included digitising Malaysia's education, mapping Malaysia’s education blueprint, fixing the past or inventing the future: The role of technology for educational transformation, leading school transformation to a digital ecosystem and teacher training - inspiring teachers to innovate and take action (resulting in a generation of pro-active and creative learners). 19 CONTEST PEOPLE Andrik Lim Kai Shan Menerima Hadiah Andrik Lim, berumur 11 tahun, adalah murid Ke las 5M dari SJK (C) Wen Hua, Batu Berendam, M elaka yang telah memen angi sebuah Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 dengan m enjawab semua soalan Pe raduan HOTS dengan betul.
