A helmet that folds
Jeff Woolf has invented a helmet,
called Morpher, that folds to the size
of a textbook. A traditional helmet’s
bulk is a major turnoff for casual
riders. What’s more, their domed
shape makes it difficult to store and
carry them at the destination.
The Morpher addresses both problems
by collapsing to just 1.4 inches thick. It
is compact enough to fit in a laptop
bag or backpack. The latest prototype
has passed European-grade safety
tests at a factory.
Made of hard plastic and
foam, like that found in
traditional helmets, it
protects a wearer’s head.
An internal, flexible layer
links segments of foam,
acting as a hinge and
allowing the helmet to fold
in half while neodymium
magnets inside the helmet
lock the Morpher in a
closed position.

1. Menguatkan jiwa di mana orang
yang berpuasa sentiasa melatih
diri dalam menguasai hawa nafsu
sehingga jiwanya semakin teguh
bukannya menjadi hamba
kepada nafsu
2. Mendidik keinginan orang berpuasa
ke arah melakukan sesuatu yang
baik dan positif dengan menjauhi
segala yang buruk dan negatif
sehingga melahirkan umat yang
bertaqwa
3. Memberi kesihatan kepada
tubuh badan dengan mengawal
pemakanan sehingga penghadam
dapat berfungsi dengan baik
4. Mengenal nikmat kenikmatan serta
melahirkan hamba yang bersyukur
atas nikmat yang dianugerahkan
oleh Allah sehingga redha dengan
apa yang ada dan tidak tamak
terhadap apa yang bukan menjadi
miliknya
Vertical take-off airplane
Inventor and entrepreneur JoeBen
Bevirt - known for designing wind
energy turbines has created an
electric airplane called S2 that takes
off vertically, like a helicopter, and
flies aerodynamically, like an airplane.
NASA has taken notice and is now
funding the development of a
55-pound
unmanned aerial
vehicle.
Supercomputer simulations of a
full-scale, 1,700-pound S2 suggest it
could fly two people about 200 miles
in an hour on 50 kilowatt-hours of
electricity, or roughly equivalent to 1.5
gallons of fuel used by a typical
two-seat airplane - which would make
the new aircraft about five times
more efficient.
A dozen compact electric motors
operate three times more efficiently
than a typical personal airplane’s
combustion engines. Retractable arms
reposition the motors to transition
between vertical takeoff, forward flight,
and landing.
S2 wouldn’t have been possible just a
decade ago but with new compact
and efficient motors, ever-increasing
power density in batteries, smarter
control systems, and tinier sensors
mean his plane will soon be a reality.
5. Mengingati dan turut merasai
penderitaan orang lain yang lebih
susah kehidupan mereka.

New Developments
Thinking Skills
The International Thinking Skills
Conference 2014 which was held on
June 16 and 17 provided a platform for
educators to exchange ideas, information
and discuss new development that could
be incorporated in Thinking Schools.
Professor Steve Higgins, Durham
University speaking on the subject of
“Thinking and learning: skills for the 21st
Century” said while technology was
perhaps best understood as a tool for
teachers and for learners in supporting
their developing skills, knowledge and
understanding, it was also a key
challenge in terms of assessment and
understanding learners' progression in
different areas of thinking, and in relation
to specific curriculum goals as well as
wider challenges of educational
accountability.
“Like a spectre at the feast, assessment
influences both curriculum and pedagogy
in what is taught and how it is learned.
However, teaching for thinking and
developing the quality of learners’
thinking is central to the aims of
education, not just in terms of its utility,
or as a response to an increasingly

summarised in Sutton Trust/EEF
Teaching and Learning Toolkit
(details in

n.org.uk/toolkit/).
“This highlights the utility of
developing these skills in terms of their
impact on key areas of the curriculum
such as literacy and numeracy. In the
current climate there is also pressure to
change educational goals in relation to
the increasing use of technology in
today’s globalised world or '21st Century
Skills', but this also needs some
challenge in terms of the teacher’s role
and assumptions about
what constitutes an
effective pedagogy
for developing
thinking,” he said.
approaches can be used to start lessons
with energy, focus, challenge and
thought.
The workshop on “Developing the
Thinking Teacher” which was moderated
by Rachael Walsh explored the changes
and shifts in attitudes that teachers
needed to adopt before asking children
to commit to developing their own
thinking.
“Exploration of how to develop ourselves
as thinking teachers will be the key,” she
said and provided the participants with
practical advice on how to overcome
barriers the thinking teacher may face.
Denise Shepherd’s workshop on
“From a Thinking School to a Thinking

delved on trusts, academies, teaching
schools, support schools, federations,

“We believe a possible direction is by
creating strong and permanent school
partnerships based on an educational
vision of a family of thinking schools
working together. We have a unique Trust
developed with support from Thinking
Schools International - all our schools are
committed to becoming accredited
thinking schools. We are not “corporate”
but believe this is an exciting and
innovative model. It has at its heart an
educational vision of planned cognitive
education raising standards and
underpinning school improvement,” she
said.
Dr. David Hyerle speaking on “Visual
Tools for Generative, Analytic and
Conceptual Thinking Designs for
Thinking” said depictions of people’s
experiences, ideas, and emotions as well
as content knowledge and thinking
processes have been created through
ancient cave drawings, cartography, road
maps and now GPS tools and brain
mapping.
“The uses of visual tools are many and
complex, literally ‘drawing’ out meaning
from our rich networking brains and
minds,” he said.
Bill Lowe speaking on “Managing
Creative Teams: Can Schools Learn from
Creative Industries?” said the generation
of new ideas and the translation of those
into action are seen as key goals in
industry.
“It is the same in forward thinking
education settings. It is argued that the
leadership of creative people needs
expertise,” he said. His workshop
explored the tactics used by successful
leaders when working on creative
projects in industry and identified the
strategies already being used and those
which can be adapted and the ones that
will never work for us.

Thinking Schools
in the UK
Teresa Williams on
“Six Starting Points to
Becoming a Thinking
School” provided an
insight into the
framework developed
by Thinking Schools
International (TSI) to
support schools in
becoming “Thinking
Schools”.
“Schools developing
independent thinkers and
learners will already find
themselves engaged in
the Six Starting Points for
a Thinking School. The Six
Starting Points provide schools with
the means to evaluate current activities,
identify strategies for further
development and enable them to
consider where and how attention
should be focused,” she said.
The interactive workshop demonstrated
the Six Starting Points and show how
they create a climate in which
independent thinking may be grown and
sustained.
The Six Starting Points - Visual Mapping,
Reflective Questioning, Structuring the
Environment, Thinking Skills, Developing
Dispositions and Collaborative
Networking, are the first elements a
school needs to consider in order to
research, understand and become a fully
developed Thinking School. They are the
foundation upon which the TSI principle
of Growing Thinking Schools from The
Inside Out is predicated and enable
schools to follow a facilitated and
structured approach to preparing for
transformational cultural change.
A delegation from Agensi Inovasi
Malaysia and the Ministry of Education
visited the United Kingdom from June
14 to 20 to attend the International
Thinking Skills Conference. The
conference, in its sixth year, is a
well-established event attended by
hundreds of delegates from across the
globe.
The event was a good opportunity for
the i-THINKERS to further develop and
also enhance the i-THINK programme
in their schools. Additionally, it also
provided an opportunity to network
with other school representatives
interested in finding out more about
the whole school approach to the
teaching of thinking.
2013, drive teams from 1,000 schools
were trained in face-to-face workshops.
In 2014, 405,000 teachers from 9,000
schools began this journey using online
learning,” he said.
The delegation also visited three
Thinking Schools after the conference
to allow delegates the chance to
understand and experience how other
Thinking Schools manage their
teaching and learning.
The objective of the visit is for the
delegates to understand and
experience the thinking culture in the

This annual conference focused on the
latest developments in cognitive

Apabila diitanya mengenai
pelaksanaan kaedah itu di sekolah lain,
Idris memberitahu, pihaknya amat
menggalakkan usaha tersebut namun
ia memerlukan kerjasama semua pihak
berikutan perbelanjaan yang tinggi.
“Kita menyokong penuh inisiatif ini,
namun ia boleh dilaksanakan
sekiranya mendapat kerjasama
daripada Persatuan Ibu Bapa dan
Guru (PIBG), pertubuhan bukan
kerajaan (NGO) termasuk swasta
untuk merealisasikannya.
“Mereka ini mungkin boleh
bersama-sama membantu dalam
soal kewangan dan ini merupakan
tanggungjawab bersama ke arah
memajukan sektor pendidikan,”
katanya.
Che Kamaliah, Pengetua Kolej Tunku
Kurshiah berkata “Kelas Masa Depan”
itu telah dimulakan sejak Februari lalu
melibatkan pengajaran serta
pembelajaran bagi pelajar tingkatan
satu dan dua di kolej berkenaan.
“Kaedah ini berupaya menjadikan guru
sebagai pengawal bahan pembelajaran,
di mana guru akan memilih bahan
bersesuaian untuk diajar menggunakan
aplikasi TKC dengan menarik, interaktif
dan berkesan.
“Apa yang menarik lagi, kaedah ini
menyediakan akses pendidikan moden,
sehingga kehadiran pelajar turut boleh
diakses pada hujung jari kerana setiap
pelajar akan diberi tablet ketika
menghadiri kelas,” katanya.
Tambah beliau, pemberian kerja rumah
juga akan dimuat naik sebelum pelajar
menghantar kepada guru untuk
semakan melalui e-mel.

PEOPLE
Living at
Cause and
Not Effect
er
Sheila Singam, a former teache
turned trainer, writes about th e
b
need to live life at Cause and
in charge of your outcomes.
Many people look to others to make them happy, but
happiness does not come from outside. It doesn’t come
from living in a world that is as calm and dull as a glass
lake, with not a ripple to disturb our peace.
Happiness comes from embracing who we
are within, from loving ourselves and
looking at our circumstances, no
matter how painful, as the
opportunity to evolve into
better people.
Motivational speaker
and author Steve
Maraboli said,
“Happiness has to do
with your mindset,
16
not with outside circumstance.” The
art of looking at tough times as an
opportunity to conquer a mountain
is called Living at Cause. The act of
blaming people and circumstances
for the pathetic people we may
have become is called Living at
Effect.
Which side of the equation do you
fall on? You may say, “Well, I live my
life 90 per cent at Cause and 10 per
cent at Effect”.
My reply to this is “Well, that’s
good… but not good enough. You
need to live your life 100 per cent at
Cause if you want to be in charge
of your outcomes.”
An amazing example of how to live
life at Cause is the motivational
speaker Nick Vujicic, who was
born with tetra-amelia syndrome, a
rare disorder characterised by the
absence of all four limbs. After
struggling for years with his
condition, he came to terms with it
and started Life Without Limbs, his
own non-profit organisation.
When a man with no arms and no
legs shows the able-bodied how to
live life to the fullest despite
limitations, we really have no
excuse not to do likewise.
So what do you do the next time
you complain that bad things are
happening to you because you have
no luck?
You remember that you have a
choice. You have the choice to
decide that the day is going to be a
good one because you said so.
There is no such thing as bad luck,
only a bad attitude and poor
choices that are limiting you from
achieving your full potential and
becoming the human being you
want.
Many of us believe we cannot
change, that we cannot
adapt to our circumstances
to emerge strong. The fact
is, we all have the potential
to be and do whatever we
want. You and I have been
blessed with immeasurable
power to make positive changes
in our lives.
It’s a tough journey to
believing that but a
highly empowering
and rewarding
one. When you
operate 100 per
cent at cause, then
nothing can truly
steal your peace.
Someone yells bad
words at you, you have
a choice to not react
and let the words slide
away without stinging
you. If you choose to
get upset, then you give
power to the other
person.

This is a great thinking map to help students visualise all the components in something. In the classroom, students
can use a brace map to describe the parts of the year, parts of an animal, parts of a plant, parts of the world and also
parts of different systems, like the body system and the solar system. An example of a Brace Map is:
What are parts and subparts of a body system?
Petal
Pistil
Flower
The Brace Map must be used with concrete objects in order to identify the physical parts of the whole object and
they almost always use nouns within the map because the purpose is to name the parts of one concrete object. The
map is great for vocabulary development because specific words are needed to label the parts.

Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2015:
Initiatives Show Encouraging Results
Details Published on Tuesday, 17 June 2014
PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysia Education
Blueprint 2013-2015 saw encouraging results
and performance since its implementation a
year ago.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin
Yassin said out of the 25 initiatives that were
introduced in 2013, some have seen
encouraging results.

He said: "A total of 12 initiatives have seen
positive and significant performance since the
education blueprint was introduced."
The blueprint was officially launched on
September 6, 2013, although several main
initiatives were already introduced at the early of the year.
Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said among the initiatives that have achieved positive
results were among others pre-school enrolment, vocational education transformation plan, higher
order thinking skills, literacy and numeracy skills (Linus), and English Language Teachers Proficiency
(ProELT).
He had earlier launched the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2015 report card which outlined the
achievements and rooms for improvement that is needed for the education sector.
