Sacrament of Baptism: Celebrated twice a month. In order to participate in this celebration,
parents must register at the Pastoral Center for our pre-baptism program.
Sacrament of Marriage: Couples planning to marry should contact the Pastoral Center before
visiting a reception hall. The preparation process is nine months before your proposed wedding date.
Call the Pastoral Center for further information.
Sacrament of Confirmation: Children in the seventh and eight grade are prepared to celebrate
this Sacrament through programs of the SSPJ school or the SSPJ Religious Education Office.
Adults prepare for this Sacrament through the RCIA process. Call the Pastoral Center for further
information.
Sacrament of Reconciliation: (Confession, Penance) Available Saturdays from 4:00-5:00 p.m. in
the Church or by appointment.
Anointing of the Sick: In the case of serious, unexpected illness, please contact the Pastoral
Center to arrange for a priest to pray with the ill person. For those about to enter the hospital, Anointing
of the Sick is held on the first Sunday of the month following the mass at 12:00 p.m.
R.C.I.A.: Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (non-Catholic adults desiring to become Catholic). Please

Dear Friends,
Today we hear the powerful story of the Prodigal Son, a parable on family life reminding us that the reality of living
family life is a challenge! Love demands a great deal from every one of us. It's not easy to be the "father" who loves
unconditionally. It's painfully difficult to face our own prodigal-like failures and sins. As the "older brother," it is
beyond comprehension not to demand accountability from those who hurt us and our family. Are you the younger or
the older son? Fr. Larry Gillick, SJ, shares:
One interpretation of this parable is that each of us combines both sons in our self. The elder part of us is ordered,
strict, obedient, logical, exact, dutiful, and pleased with our own good works. We have the proper tickets. The younger
part of us is inconsistent, envious, wandering, self-satisfying, independent, and stubborn. We each have quite a war
within. Our elder-side would like to tie down the younger-side tightly. Our self-righteousness does not want that
looser side to be seen by anybody. It wants to appear well, better than it knows itself to be....
We too live in that tension between the self-righteous and the self-redeemed-by-Christ. Those who judge others
severely are victimized by their own self-centered severity. Those who are forgiven tend to be forgiving of others.
Forgiveness begins by seeing things through the eyes of the other. It is to embrace the other’s hurts and doubts and
fears, to understand their struggle to make sense of things. This week we pray that the vision of God's love, complete
and unconditional, illuminates our vision, allowing us to see through the eyes of others, enabling us to both forgive
and seek forgiveness.
As Lent continues, our weekly gathering to pray the Stations of the Cross continues. This week the focus is The Cross
and Grief. Also continuing are the emails from Matthew Kelly, hoping to make this the Best Lent Ever. Missed a few
days? That’s okay. Just start fresh with today!
Our Parish Restoration Campaign Committee joins me again in thanking you for your warm reception last weekend.
As you heard, the active phase of the campaign will end on March 18th. If you haven’t already done so, please
consider making a donation or pledge to help us reach our goal.
This weekend, Jan Jamroz, Diocesan Director of Catholic Charities, will speak with us regarding the Catholic
Ministries Appeal. There are so many ministries which take place on Long Island thanks to the Catholic Ministries
Appeal. The presence of these ministries connects our Parish with the entire Catholic Church on Long Island. SSPJ
has been most generous in supporting the Catholic Ministries Appeal in the past. In fact, in the last six years we have
exceeded our goal! This year because we are having a Capital Campaign in our parish, the diocese has granted a 50%
reduction in our 2016 goal of $125,900. However we must guarantee that we will meet this reduced goal of $62,950.
As an added assistance to our parish, if we raise 70% of our regional goal every dollar raised over that amount up to
100% will come back to the parish.
I fully realize the sacrifices you are making by your Capital Campaign donations, but ask you to consider also making
a contribution to the Catholic Ministries Appeal which provides so many services benefitting people within our own
parish and throughout all of Long Island. I invite you to reflect on the words of Pope Francis and answer his call to
open our hearts as we work together as one, looking to the future with hope. Thank you all for being such wonderful
Apostles of Hope with your prayers and financial support of our Capital Campaign and hopefully your support of the
CMA.

Lent...40 focused days of reflection, Joy, Hope, Freshness...
Stations of the Cross
Walking in the footsteps of Jesus on the road to Calvary has been the
desire of millions of disciples. Some have been fortunate to travel to
Jerusalem and walk the Via Dolorosa, the Way of Sorrow, stopping along the path to remember
the events of Jesus’ passion. Over the centuries, people would make this journey, not in
Jerusalem, but in local neighborhoods, in churches, and in their hearts. The stops along the way
became known as stations, and following the entire journey became known as making the
Stations of the Cross.
It’s been a Lenten tradition to pray the Stations of the Cross as a community on the Friday
evenings of Lent. As we continue the tradition this year, we will focus on connecting the cross
and suffering of Jesus with the crosses and sufferings so many are experiencing in life. With the
cross of Christ always at the center, all are invited to gather to pray the
Stations on Friday evenings at 7:30pm in the church.
Friday, Mar. 11th — The Cross and Grief (praying with those coping with losses in life,
with those seeking to offer comfort and hope)
Friday, Mar. 18 —The Cross and the World Around Us (praying amidst violence and peace,
hunger and abundance, prejudice and respect, poverty and hope)
Friday, Mar. 25 — The Cross and Jesus (praying to journey with Jesus in the way
Jesus did - with faith, with love, with commitment to others)

Peanut Butter and Jelly Gang Sunday!!
PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY GANG SUNDAYS
“When did we see you hungry and feed you?”
What is this? A service opportunity aimed at feeding the hungry on Long Island
by making sandwiches for distribution to local social service agencies.
When? : Sunday March 13th
Time? : 10:15 to 11:30 AM
Where? : Auditorium
Who? Any person or family with a desire to make a difference in the
community.
**Volunteers are asked to bring three loaves of WHOLE WHEAT bread, one jar of jelly and two jars of peanut butter. In
addition, any youth volunteers are to be picked up in front of SSPJ School on Clinton Ave. at 11:45AM

include: warm-up stretches, yoga postures breathing

This is a Yoga class for all levels with variations

the end of the session.

Music update...Season Changes
You may have noticed some changes in the Music at Mass, as we have moved to the season
Of Lent.
We gather in silence, sing the Kyrie or Lord have Mercy, and the Gloria is not sung.
Also, the mass parts are different . We are now singing the Mass of Resurrection. This
can be found in the Music Issue #859.
We are in a quiet, more reflective season, and the music speaks to that..
Remember, the Music Ministry is always in need of singers and instrumentalists. I would
like to explore different musical styles but I need your help. I need experienced keyboard,
guitar and percussion players. We can only make beautiful music, together, as Apostles of
Hope. Because, together, we praise God through Music.

Fifth Grade News from SSPJ School
The 5th grade students at SSPJ were busy this month preparing poetry for the
Catholic Daughters of America Poetry Contest. The theme this year was Stewards of
God’s Creation, Caring for the Environment. The students were excited and proud of the
poems that they created. They did a fabulous job learning about different types of poetry
using various literacy elements. Winners will be announced in June.
In the area of Social Studies, the 5th grade students previously created both written
and Buncee projects about an Explorer. They enjoyed reading and researching about their
explorers, creating their technology based projects and then presenting their projects to
their peers. The students are currently learning about the Thirteen Colonies and the
events leading to the American Revolution. The students will be creating various
projects based on the American Revolution. They will also be selecting a biography to
read about a famous person, from this time period, to create a written report.

The Cries of Finitude
What most moves your heart? I was asked this question recently at a workshop. We were asked to respond to this question: When do
you most naturally feel compassion in your heart? For me, the answer came easily. I am most moved when I see helplessness, when I
see someone or something helpless to tend to its own needs and to protect its own dignity. It might be baby, hungry and crying, too
little to feed itself and to safeguard its own dignity. It might a woman in a hospital, sick, in pain, dying, helpless to get better, also
unable to attend to her own dignity. It might be an unemployed man, down on his luck, unable to find work, the odd man out when
everyone else seems to be doing great. It might be a little girl on the playground, helpless as she is teased and bullied, suffering
indignity. Or it might just be a baby kitten, hungry, helpless, pleading with its eyes, unable to speak or attend to its own need.
Helplessness tugs at the heart. I am always touched in the softest place inside me by helplessness, by the pleading of finitude. I suspect
we all are.
We’re in good company. This is what moved Mary, Jesus’ mother, at the Wedding Feast of Cana to go over to Jesus and say: “They
have no wine!” Her request here has different layers of meaning. At one level, it is a very particular request at a particular occasion in
history; she is trying to save her hosts at a wedding from embarrassment, from suffering an indignity. No doubt the shortage of wine
was due to some poverty on their part, either a shortage of money or a shortage of good planning, but, either way, they stood to be
embarrassed before their guests. But, as with most things in the Gospels, this incident has a deeper meaning. Mary isn’t just speaking
for a particular host on a particular occasion. She’s also speaking universally, as the mother of humanity, Eve, voicing for all of us what
John Shea so aptly calls, “the cries of finitude”.
What is finitude? The finite, as we can see from the word itself, contrasts itself to the infinite, to what is not limited, to God. God, alone,
is not finite. God, alone, is self-sufficient. God, alone, is never helpless, and God, alone, never needs help from anyone else. Only God
is never subject to sickness, hunger, tiredness, irritation, fatigue, bodily and mental diminishment, and death. God, alone, never has to
suffer the indignity of need, of getting caught short, of inadequate self-expression, of not measuring up, of being embarrassed, of being
bullied, of being unable to help Himself, and of having to beg silently with His eyes for someone to come and help.
Everything else is finite. Thus, as humans, we are subject to helplessness, illness, lameness, blindness, hunger, tiredness, irritation,
diminishment, and death. Moreover, within all these, we are also subject to indignity. So many of our words and actions are, in the end,
cries of finitude, cries for assistance, the cries of a baby for food, for warmth, for protection, and for a safeguard from
indignity. Although we are infinitely more sophisticated in our humanity, we are all still, at one level, the baby kitten, pleading with our
eyes for someone to feed us, and all the assertions of self-sufficiency of the rich, the strong, the healthy, the arrogant, and of those who
seemingly need no help are in the end nothing other than attempts to keep helplessness at bay. Not matter how strong and self-sufficient
we might believe ourselves to be, finitude and mortality admit of no exemptions. Tiredness, illness, diminishment, death, and painful
hungers will eventually find us all. Our wine too will eventually run out. Hopefully someone like the Mother of Jesus will speak for
us: They have no wine!
What’s the lesson in this? A number of things:
First, recognizing our finitude can lead to a healthier self-understanding. Knowing and accepting our finitude can help quell a lot of
frustration, restlessness, and false guilt in our lives. I once had a spiritual director, an elderly nun, who challenged me to live by this
axiom: Fear not, you are inadequate. We need to forgive ourselves for our own limits, for the fact that we are human, finite, and are
unable to provide ourselves and those around us all that we need. But inadequacy is a forgivable condition, not a moral fault.
Beyond forgiving ourselves for our helplessness, recognizing and accepting our finitude should challenge us too to hear more clearly
the cries of finitude around us. And so whether it’s the cry of a baby, the humiliation in the eyes of someone looking for work, the
ravaged eyes of the terminally ill patient, or simply the pleading eyes of a young kitten, we need, like Mary, to take up their cause and
ensure that someone spares them from indignity by changing their water into wine, by calling out: They have no wine!
