Courageous Cougars
At the beginning of each month, Cumberland students are presented with the
Courageous Cougar Challenge as part of our PBIS program. In March, the theme was “Being A
Good Listener.” Our staff watched closely in all different settings to see how the students were
meeting the challenge. Classroom teachers then chose a student who exemplified the Courageous
Cougar theme for the month. We would like to congratulate the following March Courageous Cougars:
Mrs. Gierszewicz AM & Ms. Joyce – Andrei Mociran
Mrs. Gierszewicz PM &
Miss Smith/Miss Carlborg - Leandro Villa
Mrs. Mullane – Matthew Jaworski
Mrs. Breitzman – Evlin Mathew
Mrs. Huffman – Althea Amon
Mrs. Adams – Samay Joshi
Mrs. Pantelin – Gabby Szewczyk
Mrs. Andersen – Miah Pena
Miss Strom – Mitch Buczek
Mrs. Brown – Matt Lowery
Mrs. Wasserman – Sabina Kurkowska
ELS Primary – Fatima Shehadeh
ELS Intermediate – David Ruvalcaba
News and Reminders...
• Book Donations - The PTO is collecting elementary age gently used children’s books for the
Book Donation Table at our next Scholastic Book Fair. It creates a very difficult situation when
the whole class visits the book fair and not all of the students come with money to purchase items.
The donation table would allow every student to walk out with a book from the book fair. A collection box will be
placed outside the office.
• Dogs on Property - Please remember that Des Plaines has an ordinance stating that dogs are not allowed on school
property unless they are certified therapy or service dogs. With the nice weather upon us, we see an increase in the
number of parents walking dogs to school to pick up students. If you choose to do this, please stay across from
school property and have your child safely cross to meet you. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.
• Box Tops - When you see a Box Top on a food product do you just toss it in the trash because you
don’t think one will matter? Think again; so far this year we have raised over $1,200 from all of you
dedicated Box Top clippers out there. We would like to congratulate Mrs. Huffman’s class for being
our 2nd trimester winner with 433 Box Tops collected. Keep them coming; they sure do help out our
school, and we can’t thank you enough for your efforts.
• Reading Program - The due date for The Schaumburg Boomers Bookworm reading program is April 17th.
Students who complete the reading goal that has been decided by their teacher will receive 2 tickets to a
Schaumburg Boomers baseball game and a Boomers Bookworm t-shirt.
• Lost & Found - Last call to remove items from the Lost and Found Table. These items will be
donated to charity the week after spring break. Please have your child check the table for lost items.
• Art Exhibit - Come visit the School District 62 Art Exhibit in the Des Plaines Public Library lobby
March 21 - April 1. Artwork from several Cumberland students will be on display.
Friday, April 17 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
