A note to father frank - Cathedral of Christ the King
October 28, 2012 thirtieth Sunday in ordinary time Feast of All Souls The Feast of All Souls is in November, a month traditionally dedicated to remembering our ancestors and loved ones that have died. The Cathedral of Christ the King, celebrating its 75th anniversary as a parish, will offer its moving remembrance of all those who have preceded us in a very special All Souls liturgy. On Friday, November 2 at 7:30 pm, an All Souls Day Eucharist will be celebrated featuring music from Maurice Durufle’s Requiem. The Solemn Mass will be celebrated by Cathedral Rector Frank McNamee, with special musical support by The Cathedral Choir of Christ the King. The Choir will be joined by cellist Charae Kruger and the work’s dazzling organ accompaniment will be played by Cathedral Organist Timothy Wissler. 2699 Peachtree Road, NE Atlanta, Georgia 30305 404-233-2145 www.cathedralofchristtheking.org Continued on Page 7 A note to father frank Dear Father Frank, WHAT’S INSIDE: Around the Parish Page 2 Anniversary Mass Page 3 Recreation Page 4 CKS Open House Page 5 Thank you for your generosity in supplying the items needed for the Evening for Hope Mass celebrated by Archbishop Gregory. Stewardship of Treasure How shall I repay the Lord for his goodness to me?” Psalm 116 In today’s Gospel, St. Mark retells the story of Jesus’ healing of the blind man Bartimaeus. After his healing, he chooses to be Christ’s disciple by following Him on the way to Jerusalem—to the Lord’s passion and death. The prophet Isaiah also describes the journey to deliverance through the Lord. The Letter to the Hebrews describes God’s call among men to the priesthood. In our quest for discipleship, do we have the faith and courage to answer God’s call to our own life’s vocation? Stewardship of Treasure This weekend is Stewardship of Treasure Weekend. It is a time to make a commitment to support the operational needs of Christ the King parish for the year 2013. Pledge envelopes are available at the entrances to the Cathedral or at the front desk. Please return your completed pledge envelope as soon as possible. It will take the financial efforts of each of us to continue the mission of Christ the King parish – “To Know, Love and Serve as Jesus Did”. If you have any questions, please contact the Cathedral at 404-233-2145. REGISTER ONLINE: www.cathedralofchristtheking.org/SundayU FOCUS ON THE CATECHISM: The Desire for God On October 11, 2012, the opening day of the Year of Faith, we celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. What a gift and blessing to have the Catechism to turn to for edification and encouragement in our faith journey. In Part One: The Profession of Faith and Chapter One: Man’s Capacity for God, we read the following paragraphs: 27 The desire for God is written in the human heart, because man is created by God and for God; and God never ceases to draw man to himself. Only in God will he find the truth and happiness he never stops searching for: The dignity of man rests above all on the fact that he is called to communion with God. This invitation to converse with God is addressed to man as soon as he comes into being. For if man exists it is because God has created him through love, and through love continues to hold him in existence. He cannot live fully according to truth unless he freely acknowledges that love and entrusts himself to his creator. (Gaudium et spes) 30 "Let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice." Although man can forget God or reject him, He never ceases to call every man to seek him, so as to find life and happiness. But this search for God demands of man every effort of intellect, a sound will, "an upright heart", as well as the witness of others who teach him to seek God. You are great, O Lord, and greatly to be praised: great is your power and your wisdom is without measure. And man, so small a part of your creation, wants to praise you: this man, though clothed with mortality and bearing the evidence of sin and the proof that you withstand the proud. Despite everything, man, though but a small a part of your creation, wants to praise you. You yourself encourage him to delight in your praise, for you have made us for yourself, and our heart is restless until it rests in you. (St. Augustine, Confessions) 6 Will you take the challenge to focus on the Catechism of the Catholic Church during this Year of Faith? Go to this link for daily excerpts from the Catechism: www.flocknote.com/catechism THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Feast of all souls continued This annual mass is celebrated with all the mystery and reverence befitting the occasion and is particularly devoted to all those who have passed away in the last year. Father McNamee notes that “for me, one of the most moving symbols used in the Mass, is the Cathedral’s Death Registry, which contains the names of all who have been buried from Christ the King since the Cathedral’s dedication. And this year, as the Cathedral parish celebrates its’ 75th anniversary, it is fitting that this book, with its significant history and memories, takes a central place in the liturgy.” The prayers and music for this special liturgy are filled with images of eternal rest and perpetual light, and ask more of us than mere reflection on past losses. They encourage us to bring to the present those we have loved and known; to acknowledge their continuing presence in our lives; to pray for them not in the past tense, but in the present and future tenses. The entire diocesan family is encouraged to attend this profound and deeply moving liturgy. Pastoral Care Ministry Dottie O’Connor • 404-233-2145 x440 • doconnor@ctking.com Who Are Stephen Ministers?
