Summer’s almost here … have you noticed the days are getting warmer? The
FREE ice cream will really help you cool off after giving blood! Ice cream provided
by the SwRC Federal Credit Union.
Save a life by donating blood. Donate at your convenience, or make an
appointment for faster processing. To make an appointment, send an e-mail
to Elizabeth Branch (ebranch@swri.org). Please indicate the 30-minute window
in which you’d like to donate, and a second time in case your first choice has
been filled.
Shine Bright!
Give Blood
Save a Life!
Decrease your chance of getting deferred by increasing your iron before you donate!
Increase your iron intake through vitamin C-rich foods (citrus fruits, red peppers, strawberries) and avoid beverages high
in tannins (tea, red wine). Excellent sources of iron are found in oysters, shrimp, sirloin, turkey, tuna, chicken and pork
loin, pumpkin seeds, molasses, lentils, spinach, kidney beans, soybeans, cashews, quinoa, hazelnuts, barley and tofu.

Spelunking at Robber Baron's Cave (www.tcmacaves.org/robberbaron)
Robber Baron is the longest cave in Bexar County and has a long history, being regularly visited since the mid-1800’s,
developed as a commercial cave in the 1920’s – 30’s, and was a speakeasy during prohibition. Today the cave is a natural
preserve to protect this unusual and complex maze cave which is also home to two endangered invertebrate species found
nowhere else on the earth.
When: 9:00 AM
Where: Corner of Nacogdoches Rd and Camellia, just inside Loop 410
Cost: Free; however, donations are greatly appreciated for the Texas Cave Management Association
Parking: Suggested parking at the HEB one block south of the cave, at Nacogdoches & New Braunfels. You can also park
on Camellia or elsewhere in the neighborhood.
Restrictions: Limited to the first 20 people who RSVP to sheri.baetz@swri.org and receive a confirmation. Open to all RRA
members and their immediate family over 14 yrs old. Waivers will be completed at the cave site before entering. Must be
in good health and physical condition (a mix of walking and stooping with some crawling and climbing over rough terrain).
When: 11:00 AM (2 hours drive to ziplining location)
Cost: $69.55 (includes gratuity – the RRA is tax exempt)
Parking: Parking is free but limited. Carpooling is encouraged.
What to Bring: Wear tennis shoes or hiking boots. Restrictions: Age 14+, weight up to 250 lbs.
RSVP: Sheri Baetz, ext 4781 or sheri.baetz@swri.org
What to expect: Participants will meet on the cave Preserve property at
the corner of Nacogdoches and Camellia. (This is actually in a residential
neighborhood.) The group will be led by Preserve Manager Joe Mitchell
(Div 14) and other experienced cavers. Lighted helmets, knee pads, and
gloves will be provided (though you may prefer to bring your own gloves).
Be sure to wear long pants and sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots. The
cave is warm, so t-shirts are fine. A small shoulder pack for carrying items
into the cave, such as a camera and water, is desirable to keep your hands
free. Be prepared to get dirty. The tour will take about 2-3 hours.
