It takes dedication, discipline and passion. Not only on the part of the student but also the teacher. At Hoffman we recognize the importance of the arts in the day to day lives of our students. Our art education program offers challenges, builds on individual differences, and provides opportunities for students to express themselves and develop positive self-concepts. Providing opportunities for students to develop positive self-concepts. !1 FEBRUARY 2, 2015 HOFFMAN ELEMENTARY ART PROGRAM 2014-15 Curriculum The sequential art curriculum is organized in three strands: PROCESS: idea development, planning, material processes, and reflection. PRODUCT: media, techniques, subject matter, content, craftsmanship, and presentation. “Every child is an artist, the problem is staying an artist when you grow up” Pablo Picasso UNDERSTANDING: art history, cultural context, criticism, aesthetics, and vocabulary. The curriculum is designed to develop content knowledge and skills in the following areas: personal expression through art production (the students favorite part), creative problem solving, recognition of the role and importance of art and artists in society, culture and history, critical assessment of art works from aesthetic and cultural perspectives and technical processes. Learning Target Classifications KNOWLEDGE: Factual information, procedural knowledge and conceptual understanding that underpin each academic discipline. Form the foundation for each of the other targets. REASONING: Specify thought processes. Ability to apply knowledge in authentic contexts. Reasoning applicable to subject area curricula; also, life beyond. SKILL: Real-time demonstration or physical performance. Skill development as central core of discipline. Procedural knowledge. PRODUCT: Products are assessed to yield evidence of intended learning. Creation of product is the stated learning. Clear and concise learning target were designed by a Visual Arts committee for District 34. They were developed to provide coherency instruction as the students progress through the district. These targets are presented by the teachers in ways that inform and engage the learners. In addition they discover how they can change the world with art. !2 Henking School – News From The Art Room We have had an outstanding year thus far in art! Your child has been busy learning about a wide variety of artists, materials, and techniques. Each week kindergarten classes participate in art for 30 minutes once a week, while first and second grade children learn for a weekly 1-hour session. During class, children gain confidence and satisfaction from hands on activities as well as their own beautiful creations. Every lesson begins with a presentation or discussion where your child is able to participate in rich conversations and think critically about their own observations. They are able to approach materials in new ways, while also reflecting on their own artistic process. Some of these materials and processes include: painting, drawing, collage, printmaking, clay, and sculpture. Every child is given the opportunity to practice new techniques as well as problem solve. They are encouraged to express their ideas and imaginations through their artwork. Some of the units we have explored so far this year include: Kindergarten Project: “Mo Willems’ Pigeons” Students learned about: –Drawing with simple shapes –Using speech bubbles & text to communicate ideas -The style of author/Illustrator Mo Willems. First Grade Project: “Matisse Cutouts” Students learned about: -Geometric vs. organic shapes –Primary & secondary colors – The life & work of artist Henri Matisse. Second Grade Project: “Textured Bowls” Students learned about: -Proper & responsible use of clay tools -3D vs. 2D art –Texture –The multi-step process of ceramics. Student art portfolios were sent home in recent weeks. Please feel free to talk with your child about their own artwork as you look through their projects. Portfolios will be sent home again in May, and some of the above projects will be included in them. So far this school year the second grade students did a wonderful job creating artwork for their performance “Citizens of the World”. Student work was featured in the programs that were handed out at the performance, as well as in the backdrop and school hallways. Coming in March, Henking will be hosting Fine Arts Week for kindergarten & first grade students and families. Please keep an eye out for more details soon. In May there will be an art show held at The Glen’s “BookMarket”. The Glen show will include all District 34 schools, as well as a number of Henking students’ works. More than 100 families gathered at Hoffman School on February 7 to enjoy a traditional breakfast of pancakes, sausage and bacon. In addition to visiting over breakfast, families participated in a raffle to win a fantastic array of toys, games, electronics and other goodies for kids. This year also featured a new event in which students could enter a raffle for the chance to cover their principal in sundae toppings. Hoffman Principal Mark Walther and Henking Principal Irene Villa gamely turned themselves into “principals à la mode” with students covering them in chocolate sauce, caramel, sprinkles and whipped cream. Mr. Walther and Ms. Villa are still finding a few stray sprinkles on themselves this week! Our annual event could not have been a success without the many wonderful families who volunteered, donated raffle items, and came out to enjoy a delicious breakfast with friends. Thank you! We receive 40% from every online purchase! February 2015 Dear Parents, This year, Illinois is transitioning to a new state accountability assessment. Replacing the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) is the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) assessment. PARCC has been designed to measure students' proficiency of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), which were adopted by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) in 2010. District 34 has been using Common Core-aligned curriculum for the past several years, and teachers have been implementing aligned instructional practices and strategies to support students' learning of these new standards. PARCC was developed to be fully aligned with the CCSS and measures a broad range of skills including problem-solving, critical thinking and purposeful writing, all essential skills for future success. PARCC will assess the degree to which students are on the intended trajectory for college and career readiness. The performance results from these assessments will provide teachers with timely feedback regarding student progress and will help to target instruction and provide enrichment or interventions as needed. Students in grades three through eight will be assessed in the areas of English/Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics. PARCC will be administered in two sections. Performance-based components will be administered in March, and an end-of-year assessment will be administered in late April/early May. Please see the attached Frequently Asked Questions sheet for more detailed information regarding PARCC. Sincerely, Molly Anderson District 34 Assessment Coordinator Hoffman Elementary 2014-15 February 13, 2015 5TH GRADE MUSICAL Tick Tock Tick Tock The anticipation is rising as the students speculate what the 5th grade musical will be. The title of the musical will be released the week of February 16th. Until then, review the following tips from “Family Matters”, a parents guide to the magic of the theatre. Musicals. Because who doesn’t want a world where everyone bursts into song and dance. ! ! ! ! Keep Calm and Love Musical Theatre 1 Hoffman Elementary 2014-15 February 13, 2015 The Process Each director is going to approach producing a show in a different way, but you can generally expect the following: Audition announcement Auditions Posting of the cast list Rehearsals Technical rehearsals Dress rehearsals Performances Strike Audition Announcement and Preparations Before your child signs up for auditions, there are a few things you should discuss: ! A musical is a commitment of time and energy. Make sure you review the rehearsal and performance schedule in advance. Do you anticipate any conflicts with soccer, piano, or other activities? If so, it’s important to be honest and let the director know of conflicts in advance. If this is the case, you might also want to encourage your child to take on a less time-consuming position with the production. Remember, every contribution is important! ! What function or job is your child curious to explore? For example, does your child want to perform onstage as an actor or offstage as a part of the crew? Student Director: assists the director in all aspects of the show. Stage Crew: works backstage during the show. Costumes: helps dress the actors. Actor: performs in the show. Props and Sets: helps build and paint the set (all 5th graders participate in this aspect in their visual arts class). Public Relations: help create the posters, some will be made in art class. Sound -FAMILY MATTERS, MTI and Lighting: backstage crew assists with sound and lighting for the production. “All the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players” Shakespeare, As You Like It “Remember, EVERY contribution is important!” ! Aside from the support and guidance you’re bound to offer your child, any extra time you have to volunteer on the production is more than welcome! Parent groups will be organized in the near future to assist with costumes, props, and set design. The artists have been working hard following directions, experimenting with mixed media, developing their fine motor skills and having fun creating! Keep up the good work!! Hoffman School has a star in its midst — it’s Drama Teacher Kristen Cone! Ms. Cone will be performing in the group opening and closing numbers at GEF’s Dancing With the Local Stars fundraiser Saturday, March 7, at the Accelerated Center. She will also serve as the show’s stage manager. Ms. Cone got called into action for the opening and closing numbers — the understudy who got her big break, so to speak — when District 34 School Board Member Cathe Russe’s original dance partner relocated to Texas. Ms. Cone and Ms. Russe will hit the dance floor as a team for GEF’s Dancing With the Local Stars group performances, while Ms. Russe will perform with partner Paul Meyers of Ballroom Dance Center in Northfield for the pairs competition. These three individuals now comprise Team Cone/Russe/Meyers, and they are currently in a competition with the 11 other Dancing With the Local Stars teams for the People’s Choice trophy. People’s Choice goes to the dance team that receives the most dollar votes between now and March 7. You can help Ms. Cone and her team win this portion of the GEF’s Dancing With the Local Stars competition by either voting with your dollars online: http://www.gef34.org, or placing your dollars (in any denomination) in Ms. Cone’s cash collection jar, located in the Hoffman School office. $1 = 1 vote, so as they say in Chicago, vote early and often! Memory Book Cover CO N TEST Once again we are having a contest for the front and back covers of the 2014-2015 Memory Book. Please draw on a sheet of 8 1/2” x 11” paper using black ink or a fine point black marker for your design. There must be a 1/4” border around the edge of your paper. The front cover must have the year 2014-2015 and HOFFMAN SCHOOL incorporated into the design. Please print your name neatly on the back. All drawings are due in the office by Friday, February 27. Covers will be selected on Monday, March 2 and submitted for printing. Have fun with this project! If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Schober or Mr. Walther. THANK YOU! ☺ OUTDOOR RECESS PROCEDURES . . . . . The benefits of an outdoor recess are many and Hoffman makes every effort to see that all of our students go outdoors every day. Children are able to exercise, socialize and experience a variety of activities with friends and this all helps to enhance their learning experience. Starting the afternoon after a time of fresh air definitely improves learning, alertness, and overall productivity. Please make sure your children are dressed appropriately for outdoor play. In cold weather, boots, mittens or gloves, warm jackets, snow pants, hats and scarves are a must. If your child wears boots to school, please remember to send in shoes for them to use during physical education. The wind chill factor must be zero or below or it must be too wet or raining before we cancel outdoor recess. The children are out approximately 20 minutes. We are often presented with requests for children to remain indoors at recess generally as a result of allergies or as part of a recovery from illness. If it is necessary for your child to be indoors at recess a note from the doctor will be required. We appreciate your support and cooperation with our recess procedure. ______________________________________________________________________ _ REMINDER – Daily Absence Each day your child is absent, call the health office to report the illness. Before school hours, a message may be left on voice mail. If your child is ill with a strep infection or other illness that is contagious, report this at the time of your call. Your child should be free of fever for twenty-four hours before returning to school. Students arriving after 7:55 am are considered tardy. Thank you so very much for helping your child to start their school day on time! 10 Steps to Keep Ahead of Head Lice 1) Watch for signs of head lice, such as frequent head scratching, flaky or irritated scalp, scabs, or the presence of nits. Anyone can get lice, mainly from direct head-‐to-‐head contact or possibly by sharing hats, brushes, beds, pillows, towels, etc. 2) Check all household members and close contacts for lice and nits (lice eggs) at least once a week. 3) Be sure not to confuse nits with hair debris (i.e., dandruff, hair spray droplets, or hair casts). Nits are yellowish-‐white, oval-‐shaped, and are attached at an angle to the side of the hair shaft. 4) Consult a pharmacist, physician, or school nurse before applying pesticides or other lice treatments. If anyone to be treated is pregnant or nursing, has allergies, asthma, or has nits in the eyebrows or lashes, contact your physician. Never use a pesticide or lice treatment on or near the eyes. 5) Consider all of your treatment options. Remember, lice-‐killing products are pesticides and must be used with caution. If you choose alternative methods, they may not have been studied thoroughly enough to determine long-‐term outcomes. The most effective and safe alternative is manual removal by combing. 6) Remove all nits. Separate hair sections and remove nits with a lice comb, baby safe scissors, or your fingernails. 7) For lice treatment, follow package directions carefully. Use the products over the sink, not in the tub! 8) Wash bedding and all recently worn clothing in hot water and dry in high heat for at least 30 minutes. Combs and brushes should be soaked in hot water (not boiling) for 10 minutes. 9) Avoid lice sprays! Vacuuming is the safest and best way to remove lice or fallen hairs with attached nits from furniture, rugs, stuffed animals, and car seats. 10) Notify your child’s school, camp, child-‐care provider, play partners, and neighborhood parents. January 23, 2015 Dear Hoffman Family, On Saturday, March 21, 2015 Hoffman School will be hosting a special Dodgeball for Diabetes event! Our fifth Dodgeball for Diabetes event is an exciting service opportunity and fund-raising effort for the American Diabetes Association (ADA) that teaches students the benefits of making healthy life choices, including getting daily exercise and eating nutritious foods. Diabetes is a chronic disease that impairs the body’s ability to use food properly. Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas that is necessary for the body to convert food into energy. In people with diabetes, either the pancreas doesn’t make insulin, the body cannot use the insulin properly, or both. Without insulin, glucose (sugar) – the body’s main energy source – builds up in the blood. Nearly one child in every 400 develops diabetes. Only Hoffman School students are invited to participate in this special event to raise funds to help the ADA accomplish the mission – to prevent and cure diabetes and improve the lives of all those affected by the disease. The programs and research supported by the ADA help more than 23 million people living with diabetes today. Interested students are asked to organize themselves into a team of 6 members who will play Dodgeball in a tournament format against other students of the same gender and grade level. Please read the attached registration form carefully, and turn in your team’s application and registration fee of $60.00 before Friday, March 6, 2015. Hoffman Dodgeball for Diabetes Tournament Official Rules NADA RULES The Hoffman Dodgeball for Diabetes rules are in line with the NADA (National Amateur Dodgeball Association) rules set for on their website http://www.dodgeballusa.com/rules.html. Some changes have been made in order to accommodate different team sizes, as well as some rules have been eliminated (no substitutions or timeouts). ADULT SUPERVISION Each Team must have a minimum of 1 parent/coach that will stay with and supervise the team the entire time the players are at Hoffman School. THE TEAM & TOURNAMENT Teams will be made up of 6 players. Five(5) players will compete on a side. There will be six divisions. DIVISIONS: 3rd Grade Boys, 3rd Grade Girls, 4th Grade Boys, 4th Grade Girls, 5th Grade Boys, 5th Grade Girls. The round robin tournament will determine the seeding for a single elimination bracket tournament. 3rd Grade Division Division 7:00-8:00 A.M. check-in check-in 8:00-10:30 A.M. tournament tournament 4th Grade Division 5th Grade 10:00-11:00 A.M. check-in 12:30-1:30 P.M. 11:00-1:00 P.M. tournament 1:30-3:30 P.M. THE FIELD The playing field is a rectangle, divided into two (2) equal sections by a center-line and attack-lines approximately 3m from, and parallel to the centerline. MEASUREMENTS: Approximately 50’ x 22’ – Similar to a volleyball court. THE GAME The object of the game is to eliminate all opposing players by getting them "OUT". This may be done by: 1. Hitting an opposing player with a LIVE thrown ball thrown below the shoulders. 2. Catching a LIVE ball thrown by your opponent before it touches the ground. Definition: LIVE: A ball that has been thrown and has not touched anything, including the floor/ground, another ball, another player, official or other item outside of the playing field (wall, ceiling, etc) If a player is hit in the head with a LIVE ball, the player will not be eliminated. The player that threw the ball will also NOT be eliminated and no penalty will be given. BOUNDARIES During play, all players must remain within the boundary lines. Players may leave the boundaries through their end-line only to retrieve stray balls. They must also return through their end-line. If a player exits the field anywhere other than their end-line, they are eliminated. If a player dodges a ball to the side or jumps backwards off the court while dodging, they are eliminated. THE OPENING RUSH Game begins by placing the dodgeballs along the center line – three (3) on one side of the center hash and three (3) on the other. Players then take a position behind their end line. Following a signal by the official, teams may approach the centerline to retrieve the balls. This signal officially starts the contest. Teams may only retrieve the three (3) balls to their right of the center hash. Once a ball is retrieved it must be taken behind the attack-line before it can be legally thrown. TIMING AND WINNING A GAME The first team to legally eliminate all opposing players will be declared the winner. A 90 second time limit has been established for each contest. If neither team has been eliminated at the end of the 90 seconds, the team with the greater number of players remaining will be declared the winner. In the event that there is an even number of players on the court, a sudden death overtime period will be played. The team that eliminates an opposing player first will be declared the winner. 5-SECOND VIOLATION In order to reduce stalling, a violation will be called if a team in the lead controls all six (6) balls on their side of the court for more than 5 seconds. Nuestro quinto evento de Dodgeball para la Diabetes es una oportunidad emocionante para servir y recaudar fondos para la Asociación Americana de Diabetes(ADA) que enseña a los estudiantes los beneficios de tomar decisiones saludables, incluyendo hacer ejercicio diariamente y comer alimentos nutritivos. La diabetes es una enfermedad crónica que afecta la capacidad del cuerpo para usar la comida adecuadamente. La insulina es una hormona producida en el páncreas que es necesario para el cuerpo para convertir los alimentos en energía. En las personas con diabetes, el páncreas no produce insulina o el cuerpo no puede usar la insulina adecuadamente, o ambos. Sin insulina, la glucosa (azúcar)- la fuente principal de energía- se acumula en la sangre. Casi uno en cada 400 niños desarrollan la diabetes. Sólo los estudiantes de la Escuela Hoffman están invitados a participar en este evento especial para recaudar fondos para ayudar a la ADA cumplir su misión- prevenir y curar la diabetes y mejorar las vidas de todos los afectados por la enfermedad. Los programas e investigaciones apoyadas por la ADA ayudan a más de 23 millones de personas viviendo con diabetes hoy en día. Reglas Oficiales del Torneo Hoffman Dodgeball para la Diabetes REGLAS “NADA” Las Reglas del Tornamento Dodgeball de Hoffman para la Diabetes se encuentran en Internet junto con las de la Asociación Nacional de Aficionados del Dodgeball (NADA, por sus siglas en Ingles), el sitio establecido en Internet: http://www.dodgeballusa.com/rules.html. Algunos cambios se han hecho a fin de acomodar diferentes tamaños de equipos, así como también algunas reglas han sido eliminadas (no substituciones o descansos) SUPERVISION POR ADULTOS Cada Equipo debe tener como mínimo un padre/entrenador que permanecerá y supervisara el equipo y a los jugadores el tiempo completo en la Escuela Hoffman. EL EQUIPO Y EL TORNEO Los equipos se compondrán hasta de 6 jugadores. Cinco (5) jugadores competirán al lado. Habrá seis divisiones. DIVISIONES: Niños y Niñas de 3er Grado, Niños y Niñas de, 4º, Niños y Niñas de 5º Grado. El Grupo del Torneo “Round Robin” determinara la eliminación del Grupo del Torneo “Bracket” pasando así al siguiente nivel. División 3rd Grado 7:00-8:00 A.M. Registrarse 8:00-10:30 A.M. Torneo LA CANCHA La cancha del juego es un rectángulo dividido en dos (2) secciones iguales con una línea al centro y unas líneas de ataque paralelas a la línea que miden aproximadamente 3m paralelas a la línea del centro. MEDICIONES: Aproximadamente 50’ x 22’ – Similar a una cancha de voleibol. EL JUEGO El objetivo del juego es el de eliminar a todos los jugadores del equipo opuesto, sacándolos, del juego, esto se hace de la siguiente manera: 1. Pegarle a un jugador opuesto con una pelota ACTIVA tirándola por debajo de los hombros. 2. Capturar la pelota ACTIVA que tiro el equipo oponente antes de que la pelota toque el piso. Definición: ACTIVA: Una pelota que ha sido lanzada y no ha tocado nada, incluyendo el piso/otra pelota, otro jugador, un oficial u otro artículo que este fuera de la cancha (pared, techo, etc.) Si a un jugador se le pega en la cabeza con una pelota ACTIVA, el jugador no será eliminado. El jugador que tiró la pelota NO será eliminado y no se le anotará “penalty”. LÍMITES Durante el juego, todos los jugadores deben permanecer entre las líneas limites. Los jugadores pueden salir de los limites de la cancha a través de su línea final solo para recuperar pelotas perdidas. Deben de regresar a través del final de la línea. Si un jugador sale de la cancha en cualquiera de su línea final, será eliminado. Si un jugador esquiva una pelota de un lado o brinca hacia atrás de la cancha mientras esta esquivando la pelota, también será eliminado. LA PRISA DE APERTURA El juego empieza al colocar las pelotas a lo largo de la línea del centro – tres (3) en un lado del centro y tres en el otro. Los jugadores entonces toman una posición atrás de la línea. Siguiendo la señal del Oficial, los equipos se acercan a la línea del centro para obtener las pelotas. Con esta señal oficialmente se empieza el juego. Los equipos solo recuperan las tres (3) pelotas para su lado derecho del centro. Una vez que la pelota es obtenida debe de ser tomada atrás de la línea de ataque antes que pueda ser lanzada oficialmente. MEDIR EL TIEMPO Y GANAR EL JUEGO El primer equipo que legalmente elimina a todos los jugadores opuestos será declarado el ganador. Se ha establecido un tiempo limitado de 90 segundos para cada concurso. Si ninguno de los equipos ha sido eliminado al final de los 90 segundos, el equipo con la mayoría de jugadores será declarado el ganador. En caso de que hayan quedado jugadores en números pares en la cancha, jugaran un periodo de (1) minuto más. El equipo que elimine a un jugador del equipo opuesto será declarado el ganador. 5-SEGUNDA VIOLACIÓN A fin de reducir estancamiento, se producirá una violación si un equipo líder controla seis (6) pelotas de su lado de la cancha por más de 5 segundos.
