Our Building Renovation Fund Chairperson Karen Gagliano and her committee, Janet Pollinger, have put together a beautiful basket with all kinds of great gifts in it which will be raffled off before Mother’s Day, so if you haven’t bought any tickets, please do so real quickly and get a chance to win. Our Sock Hop was a huge success and a special thanks goes out to Lucille O’Day, her committee and Janet Pollinger for the great decorations. Traces of Gold was at their best and the place was rocking! We had our Bravo Broadway show here with Linda Corrigan producing it and that was fantastic. Sorry some of you missed it. There was a singer who was in Danny and the Juniors and also The Dupree’s, Johnny Petillo. What a great singer and comedian. I’m trying to get him back here so keep checking the newsletter for upcoming events. Again, thank you Linda for bringing us another awesome show! By the time you get this, we will have already had our Vegas Night on April 30, 2016 and just from the presold tickets, I can tell you this is going to be a huge event! On to this month, May is looking awesome too! We have our Texas Hold’em Tournament May 7, which is always exciting. Please see Sandie or Jay if you are not in it yet. On May 14 “Pub Night “is back with SoulFire playing all the sounds of the 60’s,70’s & 80’s. You won’t want to miss this great band. Only ten dollars at the door includes free appetizers. Also remember all of our members who are in need of prayers. Remember “THIS IS OUR CLUB AND OUR FAMILY”. And I can honestly say this is the best club on the strip. Submitted by, Secretary Honora Giumenta (full set available in office) HERITAGE COMMITTEE Caterina de Medici In the past five hundred years, no woman in the world has wielded as much power as Caterina de Medici during the Sixteenth Century in Europe. She was born in Florence, Italy, on April 13, 1519, the daughter of Lorenzo II de Medici and Madeleine de la Tour D'Avergne. Both parents died the same year she was born. Of note is her last name, “de Medici,” not "di Medici." The latter denotes direct family lineage, while the former indicates her relation to the great Medici banking family of Florence. Her great-grandfather was Lorenzo the Magnificent and her great-uncle was Pope Leo X. She was raised by elderly aunts and later lived in the palace of her cousin, Pope Clement VII, who brought her to live with him. The Medici’s lent a great deal of money to King Francis I of France which he was unable to repay. To erase the debt, the King proposed a marriage of young Catherine to his second-born son, Henry, which was agreed to, but Catherine was still too young. When she reached the age of fourteen, she left Italy for Paris with a trousseau of over 5,000 dresses, and accompanied by 100 Italian cooks, two of whom were Sicilian to make cannoli and two to make sauces. Catherine found herself in a strange country, not knowing the language, and married on October 28, 1533, to a man she had never seen who ignored her for other female interests. For ten years she did not conceive, but later gave birth to ten children, seven of whom survived to adulthood. Circumstances changed when in 1536 Crown Prince Francesco died making Henry, Catherine's husband, the new Crown Prince and soon-to-be King of France. However, he died soon after in a joust as a result of a lance in his eye, and Catherine then became Regent for her three sons who each reigned as Kings of France, each dying in sequence while young. The first son to become King was the frail, 15-year-old, Francis II. When he died, Catherine successfully fought plots within the court to oust her other sons as potential rulers. Nonetheless, each son, as King, would not make a decision unless Catherine was consulted. Catherine introduced modernization into the primitive conditions of France. First, with her army of Italian cooks, she introduced fine dining. Secondly, she introduced the use of knives and forks as the French had been eating food with their hands, as had the English. Finally, she introduced women to the use of wearing underwear. In recognition of her efforts to promote fine cooking, the largest and most famous culinary school in the United States, the Culinary Institute of America, in Hyde Park, New York, named its premier, student-staffed, Ristorante Caterina de Medici. The Italian Government donated $5,000,000 for the pavilion in which it is housed today. Gaetano V.
