I Didn’t Know That!” Interesting Military Facts The US military has a secret, nearly silent type of Velcro, which reduces the ripping noise by over 95% On February 24, 1942, the US Military ordered a total blackout of Los Angeles and fired 1,400 anti-air artillery and thousands of .50 caliber shots at a hovering object for 1 hour. In 2010, the U.S. government used 1,760 Sony PlayStation 3’s to build a supercomputer for the Department of Defense. Their reason was that it was more cost efficient and “green.” The United States Department of Defense is the largest employer in the world at 3.2 million people. Walmart is number 3. The United States Army has not had a 5 Star General since Sept 22, 1950. The reason many U.S Army helicopters are named after native-American tribes is because the first U.S Air Force bases were located on Native-American reserves. The U.S. military originally planned to provide personnel, vehicles, and costumes for the film ‘Independence Day’, but backed out after producers refused to remove the script’s Area 51 references. When worn on deployment, US Flag patches on uniforms are infrared so soldiers can be identified as friendly by others looking through night vision goggles. The 442nd Infantry Regiment, composed of largely Japanese American unit that served during WWII, did so while their families were held in internment camps. Their motto was “Go for Broke” and they were the most decorated unit in U.S. military history.
