LEGISLATIVE REPORT
Our state seminar will have come and
gone by the time you read this and I
sure hope it was even bigger than the
last 2 years with more first timers and
younger people/members. In attendance.
Not much going on as sessions have not
started as of this writing.
I haven’t heard anything from the S O S
office on possible language change on
mc definition.
S O S has finally come out with their
AUTOCYCLE license plates and they
firmly state AUTOCYCLE at the bottom of it. There is no mistaking them
for mc plates.
As of Jan 1, 2016 AUTOCYCLES will
have their own little box to check on
Illinois accident reports.
March 2nd is our Legislative Day and
the Illinois Primary Election is March
15. I believe we will have a bigger turnout of legislators coming over for it as
there are a load of targeted races on both
sides of the isle and they will be looking
for their constituents.
Please be there at all costs as we need to
make a great showing and to be there
for those that support us. Each chapter
should have no less than 2 members for
each representative district. If you have
volunteers to go reach down in your
pockets at you chapter meetings and if
each member donates a few dollars for
their gas and some light lunch or even
help them with a night’s stay after the
reception we can achieve those #’s.
The State House Inn ph# is (217) 5281500. We have a block of rooms set
aside, Just ask for the ABATE of Illinois block of rooms. The rooms are for
Mar 1st and March 2nd, 1 or both nights
Even if your current legislator is not
running again we need to make the best
appearance to them for all their help
over the years and they can fill in their
replacements on what we can do for
them when they take office. What we
can do is to help get them elected and
“Never Cost the State Money”. All current legislators love that about us.

WASHINGTON TRIP
April 24-30, 2016
Many times former legislators go back
home and become county and/or municipal officials and we need their help at
times. Keeping them happy can go a
long ways for our local successes.
Another thing to help draw more current
legislators to our reception is with their
own band scheduled to play, “The Boat
Drink Caucus”. This is made up of State
Sen. Don Harmon (39th), and State
Reps Chad Hayes (104th) and Mike
Tryon (66th). They have 4 back-up
players and their own sound and lighting man as well. I know you will enjoy
them and they won’t cost us a penny.
The D.C. Trip is April 24-30. If you are
interested in going go to our State Web

questonaire and fill it out and send it in
to me.
Elizabeth Winters and Rich Kinkade
have done a great job tweaking the web
site so this is all possible. Making the
web site easier and more productive for
us all has been Rich’s main focus since
he took over the position.

the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield. We have several vendors lined up
but we still have plenty of room for more.

crowd the morning of March 2nd. Legislative Day is one of our most important
events.

Those vendors that rent a booth at regular
price at the swap meet get the same size
booth for half price at the state party in
June. Vendors will be allowed to set up
from 2pm till 7pm Saturday February
20th and from 7am till 9:30am Sunday
morning. This year the entrance fee for
the bike show has been reduced from $20
to $10 and admits 1 person into the swap
meet. All vendors and bike show participants are required to stay until 3:30pm.
There will be drawings for door prizes
throughout the day with concessions
available.
Legislative day is March 2nd, please put
this on your calendar and plan to attend.

willing to take on this office in the upcoming year. This can be an individual,
couple, team, or whatever it takes. By
doing this, we hope to give the individual/individuals an opportunity to see what

Things may look

the voters guide in. It is in the center of the paper so that you can easily remove the pages and
take with you when you vote.
If you like chili or like to shoot pool with a
broomstick then you are in luck. Read thru all
the articles for information on these evets . Several chapters are having chili cook-offs and
broomstick pool tournaments in February and
March. If I noticed it in your article I put it on
the calendar.
Review the calendar closely for your chapter
meeting dates. I collected forms at the last BOD
meeting that the State Board Reps completed
with chapter meeting dates. If your meeting
date is not listed then I did not get the form
back. I can send it to you be email if you want to
complete it. Let me know by email.
I hope I had a chance to visit with you at the
seminar. Maybe I will see you at the Swap Meet
on the 21st.

MARVELS OF MARVEL MYSTERY
OIL - A SECRET MUST FOR MOTORCYCLE WINTER STORAGE
When it gets so cold out you know you
will not be riding for a few weeks, stop by
an auto parts store or a Walmart and get a
quart can of Marvel Mystery Oil. Pour
almost the whole can in the gas tank (save
about 4-6 tablespoons for later), and then
fill the tank up completely with fuel. The
Marvel Mystery Oil will act as an upper
cylinder lubricant. (This stuff has been
around since the 30s, and I still don’t
know how it works. Air cooled air plane
engines love the stuff. And we all know
that the airplane guys got the idea for
aircraft engines from us motorcycle guys.
If you want to unstick some valves or lubricate sticking valves, this stuff works
like magic. Paul Romine, the guy who
remanufactured Ford engines for Ford in
the midwest and a NHRA Champion,
swears by the stuff, and that’s enough for
me. -Rod)
Remember that 4-6 tablespoons of Marvel
Mystery Oil we held in reserve? Now
comes the time to use it. Pull the spark
plugs out of the engine, pour a tablespoon
of Marvel Mystery Oil in each cylinder,
and turn the engine over by hand several
revolutions in order to spread the Marvel
Mystery Oil around the cylinder walls.
Reinstall the spark plugs. Simple steps
like these will keep your bike ready for
this spring and many more to come! Especially if you own a shovel.

MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR
MINUTES
(We have had a series of questions about
minutes of board meetings. What follows
is a discussion of the issues confronted by
boards and board secretaries. Let us have
your comments and feedback. -Rod)
Q: Our local ABATE chapter has had
some discussion recently over how we
should take minutes. Someone told me
A: Fir st, look to your bylaws for guidance. Often times, the bylaws will specify
what type of minutes to use. If you have a
choice, there are two choices a board secretary can make regarding minutes. They
can either record every word, or record
summaries of the conversations. Each has
its benefits and drawbacks.
Robert’s Rules generally favors a showall, tell-all approach to Board Minutes.
Certainly that makes life easy when all
that is done is to record exactly every
comment and then show the struck language that is not part of the approved
minutes. Only Board members should be
privy to the "draft minutes" and then when
the "draft minutes are approved" those
minutes are published and made available
to the members. These rules regarding
minutes are simple and easy to enforce.
However, these kinds of recordings may
chill candid ramblings that would be inappropriate for publication – even if shown
as stricken – and may contain legal issues
that need to be protected. For example,
what if libel, slander or politically sensitive remarks, etc. are recorded with no
way to edit or redact the comments?
Those type of comments could come back
to haunt the organization in the future or
cause divisions within the organizations.
The summary approach also has considerations which recommend it. It allows
brutally honest exchanges between board
members, – even inappropriate exchanges
– without chilling what some folks really
think. It makes the lawyers sleep better
without worrying about libel and slander
suits. It allows ABATE to put its best
foot forward in the final minutes as approved by the Board. Since we as an organization are somewhat political this
may be the best choice, unless we want to
run the risk of causing divisions within
the organization.
Q: A fr iend of mine at wor k was going
north on Route 57 from Kankakee, IL.
Right before the Manteno exit, a State
trooper had someone pulled over. My
friend didn't change lanes when approaching the trooper. All of a sudden, the trooper pulled out right in front of him and
gave him a citation for violating the
"Scott's Law." What is this law, and is
there any defense? A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois
Member (Also remember last month’s
article about a similar situation involving
David Hendy, long time ABATE of Illinois member.)
A: Anybody who's ever heard me speak
at one of the state seminars knows that I
think everybody should have a will. They
don't have to be complex, and they don't
have to be expensive. And remember, we
do wills for ABATE members for free!
When you are ready to make a will, there
are several things you will need to think
about such as:
- Who should receive my property?
- Who should take care of my minor
children?
A: The law definitely exists, and can be
found for Illinois at 625 ILCS 5/11-907.
Other states have similar provisions
(Indiana at IC 9-21-8-35 and Ohio at ORC
4511.213). The Illinois statute requires
that:
(c)
Upon approaching a stationary
authorized emergency vehicle, when the
authorized emergency vehicle is giving a
signal by displaying alternately flashing
red, red and white, blue, or red and blue
lights or amber or yellow warning lights, a
person who drives an approaching vehicle
shall:
proceeding with due caution, yield
the right-of-way by making a
lane change into a lane not adjacent to that of the authorized
emergency vehicle, if possible
with due regard to safety and
traffic conditions, if on a highway having at least 4 lanes with
not less than 2 lanes proceeding
in the same direction as the approaching vehicle; or
proceeding with due caution, reduce
the speed of the vehicle, maintaining a safe speed for road conditions, if changing lanes would
be impossible or unsafe.
...
(d) A person who violates subsection (c)
of this Section commits a business offense
punishable by a fine of not less than $100
or more than $10,000. (emphasis added)
Because the summary approach does not
record perfectly the words and expressions involved during a board meeting,
board members can be accused of inappropriate editing. In other words, the
Board is reserving the right to "clean up"
irrelevant comments that may or may not
be appropriate. It then becomes important
for the secretary to be judicious in deciding how the board discussions are to be
summarized.
The statute is less than clear as to
when a motorist is required to move over.
It is clear that the statute requires that a
motorist either change lanes or slow
down. It's still up to the officer to decide
if the motorist exercised "due caution,"
but the police officer is only one-half of
the story. The charged person may have
believed that a lane change was unsafe. A
judge or jury would be the final word.
In general, given the sue-everybody mentality that seems to be running amok these
days, it may be that adopting summary
minutes may afford the best for ABATE
boards and their members.

Q: I want to do my will, but I' m not
sure what I should put in it or what I need
to consider when I'm doing my will.

- Do I need to create a trust for my
spouse or minor children?
- Do I want to make any charitable
gifts?
- Should my life insurance go to a
trustee or directly to the beneficiaries?
- Who do I want to administer my
will?
- What about taxes?
If you already have a will, you should
review it to make sure it is up to date and
reflects changes in your marital status or
changes in the beneficiaries you named.
And by the way, there are several requirements that have to be met to ensure that
the will is valid. In general, the will has to
be made by someone over 18 and of
sound mind and memory. Also, it must be
in writing, signed by the maker, and witnessed (with signatures) of two disinterested persons (not anyone who would
benefit from or is named in the will). Upon the death of the person who made the
will, the court will make sure it is valid
and provide appropriate orders to insure
the will’s instructions are carried out.

By-Law Proposal
I would like to submit a change to the ByLaws of A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois Inc. I think a
change to Article 2—Section 1 on Membership of the Corporations would be beneficial to
our organization.
Section 1. Classes of Members
All members of the corporation shall be of two
(2) classifications, That of individual members
who vote at the chapter level and those who
vote at the Board of Directors meetings as the
state representative of that chapter. Only the
chapter representatives shall vote at the Board
of Directors meetings.
The change in the By-Law that I am proposing
is that there be three classifications of members of the corporations and read as such.
All members of the corporation shall be of 3
classifications:
1. That of individual members
who vote at the chapter level.
2. Those who vote at the Board of Directors meetings as the state representative of that
chapter. Only the chapter representatives shall
vote at the Board of Directors meetings.
3. A nonvoting, sustaining members, that
can be either an individual or a group.
The rational for this By-Law change is that by
offering a sustaining membership we will be
able to spread or message and influence overs
a wider portion of the motorcycling community. By offering the Fraternal riding organizations, riding clubs, off road riding groups and
motorcycle clubs the chance to be a part of our
organization not only will we open an avenue
to inform them of what actions we are involved in politically but also bring much needed revenue into A.B.A.T.E. Of Illinois. Be
sending then several copies of our newsletter
we will increase the possibility of these groups
participating in our chapter activities. We can
also claim more influences and supporters to
politicians as we add the membership numbers
from these other organizations to our voting
blocks. If the Board of Directors sets the annual dues from these sustaining members at
$100, with only 100 memberships we will
have added $10,000 to our budget annually.
There are well more than 100 groups that may
be interested in the form of membership.

Greetings from your new N.W. Region
Co-coordinators Sandy Murrell and Bud
Lein. We are excited about this new journey and our goal is to give 100% of ourselves and do the best that we can.
We want the people of our region know
we are available to them if they need us.
Our goals are to come to each chapters
meeting at least twice a year and to participate in your events as much as we can.
We strongly feel that each chapter should
support each other and we encourage you
to attend other chapter events, and yes,
their chapter meetings as well. This is a
good way to meet new people, talk with
them and maybe you will come away
with some good ideas from them. We all
know our state membership is down.
What are each of you doing to promote
A.B.A.T.E. when you talk to them and
get them interested in joining our organization? This is where a better communication between chapters come into play.
Go to another chaper meeting and talk
with them, find out what they are doing.
Maybe what works for them will work
for you.
One of our “projects” is to have a calendar with each of the chapter events that is
going on for that month in each monthly
state paper. We will need a contact person from each chapter that we can contact
to get this info from. If we haven’t talked

all sorts of weather to deal with. Maybe it
will be a bit more normal this month.
Guess we’ll just wait and see.
Our December meeting/Christmas potluck
was held at Dave & Kats’ in Ohio on the
13th with 22 members attending. It was a
rainy day with spurts of downpours. We
all enjoyed Christmas cheer and great
food! Thanks to Dave & Kat for hosting
again this year. The meeting was called to
order and the October minutes were read
and approved. We voted to donate items
for the ABATEPAC & FEDPAC auctions
that will be held Friday and Saturday
nights at the State Seminar. We also voted
to once again donate $250 to the hospitality room at the seminar, and also to be a
Gold Sponsor of the seminar. Our Election of Officers was held as follows:

The New
Year is upon us and here’s hoping that we
all can ride more in 2016. As we all start
another new year, let’s keep in mind what
we stand for in ABATE - know your
rights, educate yourselves so you can educate others, sign up those new members
just waiting to be asked.
Open Roads Chapter members have many
events planned for 2016 - pool tournament, chili cook-off, book run, windshield
washing, motorcycle awareness events,
bike safety programs, bike shows, and
much more.
EVENTS:
Christmas Party - Our Christmas Party
was Saturday, January 9, at the Plano
American Legion (510 E. Dearborn Street
in Plano). The chapter provided the meat
and table service with members bringing a
dish to share. Many members came out,
met new officers, shared delicious food,
good friends, and holiday cheer.
Membership Meeting - Next membership meeting is Saturday, February 27, 6
pm, Plano American Legion. Time for
cabin fever so come to the meeting and
have a great night out.
Chili Cook-off and Pool Tournament Saturday, February 27, at Plano American
Legion. Pool Tournament begins at noon

February 6, 2016 at the VFW in Dixon,
IL is the NW Region Chili Cookoff. We
are in need of people to help work this
event. It can’t happen unless you step up.
Watch for an email from us on signing up
for different spots. We need head judges,
mild chili judges, hot chili judges, people
to work the front door, bake sale, 50/50
and the silent auction. Anybody willing
to help set up is appreciated too.
On Sunday, January 1, 2016 we attended
the Big River Chapter ABATE meeting
at the VFW in Savanna, IL. Big River
was struggling to retain membership and
the chapter was to the point that they
might fold and no longer be a chapter.
They reached out to their members via
mail/email to have them attend this meeting to determine their fate. We are excited to inform you that they voted to
remain a chapter. They voted for their
officers at this meeting and will continue
to move forward. We have committed to

Laurie reported that we have 104 members. Mike has taught 149 students at 3
schools. Kat has ABATE caps for sale for
$15 and also the “distress” bandannas.
Our chapter has “cash raffle” tickets for
sale at $1 ea. or 6 for $5 to help fund our
30th anniversary party in 2017. The donation drawing was won by Pam Rossler and
she donated it back to our anniversary
fund. Thank you Pam!
We voted to donate $100 to have our
chapter name listed on the State Bike Raffle Trailer. We have 4 of our members
mark your calendars now for the pool
tournament - prizes, $$, socializing, fun,
and sharing your expertise. Chili cook-off
is from noon to 3 pm. Other chapters are
invited to join us as we challenge you for
the best chili around. Have your chili at
the Legion by noon so everyone can sample it. Winners will be announced at 3
pm. Sounds like a full day planned for
YOU. Let’s join together and show our
communities that ABATE is alive and
strong.
Book Run - A book run is in the works
for the upcoming season. Chapter members - Sharyl Mataya, Steve Gaw, Bill
Kolb, Belinda Lein, Todd Glover, and
Linda Oleson - are working hard on coordinating a run to share with all ABATE
chapters. They are excited in bringing
enthusiasm and excitement to members as
this is a way to network with other chapters, organizations, and communities and
to get members riding. The run will have
approximately 50 stops which include
bike dealers, places of interest, and bar/
grills from the area from I80 to the Wisconsin border and Route 47 to the Mississippi River (there will be a few stops out
of this area). Dates are from April 1
through September 30 with a post party at
the Plano American Legion on October 1.
Points for each stop will be determined at
the party and cash prizes will be awarded.
Books will cost $10 each.

A little about Sandy:
I live in Freeport, IL and belong to the
Freeport Chapter and have been a member since 2010 and have served as their
treasurer since 2013. I have been a BOD
rep for my chapter for the past 2 years
and was voted as Member of The Year
2014 by my chapter, which is a great
honor to receive. After attending the
BOD meetings for the past 2 years and
getting better educated about ABATE, I
wanted to get more involved. After
thinking pretty heavily about the NW
Region Coordinator position and talking
quite intently with “Cleaver” who was
our region coordinator at the time, I decided to run for it. Luck has it, our region
has 2 coordinators. We both feel we have
a lot to offer and plan on doing the best
we can and look forward to working together. On a personal note, I
have two daughters- Melissa,
her oldest, lives in Machesney
Park, IL and Sarah, her youngest and her husband live in
Muscatine, IA. One exciting
event Iam looking forwards to
in 2016 is that I am going to a
first time grandma in July of
2016. I look forward to workthat wish to be listed on the “Downed
Rider” road service booklet for ABATE.
We wish to thank Kevin B., Fred M.,
John Smith, and Denver R. for your willingness to come to the aid of your fellow
riders who have had a breakdown.
We will once again join with IDOT to
help promote Motorcycle Awareness, by
washing windshields on I-80 on the projected date of May 15th. More information to follow as details are finalized.
The 10th annual Chili Shootout will be

with DuKane than with Open Roads. I
was like most of you just watching
from the wings. I made a few life
changes and decided to get more involved and got elected as V.P. in
Open Roads, a position I still hold. I
saw first-hand how hard our officers
worked for you and when the position
for NW Region Coordinator was open
I felt I could do more. I look forward
to working with Sandy in that position
and also look forward to meeting each
chapter, maybe you can teach an old
dog new tricks!

well. Tom Chiado passed away suddenly
on January 7th. Condolences to Tom’s

Hello Blackhawk this is Brian Enburg
returning as your president for 2016 year.
First off I would like to thank the 2015
board for continuing on the fight for your
rights this past year.
Now down to business, we have assembled a very strong board this year to
work for you and to continue to protect
your rights as a motorcycle rider and
ABATE member. We are in an election
year so we will have our work cut out for
us getting the correct folks elected. You
may get asked or called to help out with
campaign handouts or supporting candidates that vote motorcycles. We hope
you get involved.
To keep you up to date on our meetings
and times I have listed them for the entire
year here. We will continue to meet
where we have for the past 7 years. The
name has recently changed, but the location has not. The Former PK Dugan’s is
now the Red Angus Bar and Grill, 1443
1st Street Silvis, right on the Silvis border and across from Green Chevrolet.

Jutti hosted our annual Christmas party. As
always a good time was had by all. We
also had our chapter meeting before the
festivities. Elections were held and Bob

Koeller (that's me) is now our Public Relations person as well as taking on the newsletter. Tracy Borgen stayed in her position

We had our elections, and it went as follows: Jim (Ozzie) Rathburn is our new
president; Mike McCunn is our new vice
president; Angel Miller is our new secretary; Alisha Moore is our new Treasurer,
and Membership person; Shawn Keane is
our new legislative coordinator; Steve
Bailey is our new Safety & education representative; Nick Promenschenkel is still
our events coordinator.
And below is the Starved Rock Chapter
Christmas Party on Jan. 9, 2016 had 97
people in attendance!
Our Chili cook-off, and broomstick pool
tournament will be on February 13th, at
Johnnies Tap in Fulton, Il.. The cook-off
will start at 11:00, and the pool tournament will begin at 12:00.
Our next meeting will be Sunday, February, 3rd, at the Savanna VFW.
A.B.A.T.E. of Iowa, District 21's Chili
cook-off will be March, 19th, at Shaggy's
in Goose Lake Ia.

We have an idea and the board has
agreed, on a survey for all our members.
We currently have around 89 members
and would really like to talk with them
and get their input on getting more participation in meetings and activities. I am
limiting the questions to basically yes or
no with only 10 questions. I will ask for
any comments and or criticism from the
membership to find out what activities
and direction they would like to see Thunder Rock take. Some suggestions have
already come up about having more family outings, such as picnics and more destination rides vs just poker runs. If any oth-
er chapters have ever done anything like
this, I would appreciate hearing from you.
We have started our new year of cities
and towns books. Maybe announcing the
places we will be visiting will prompt
some to come on the rides just to fill the
books! Looks like we will be having several members going to the state seminar
this year. I hear it's a good time, maybe
have to jump into that too!

FRIENDS AND ACQUAINTANCES
As I start my 29th year with Abate
South Suburban, I remember all the good
times I have had through all these years.
How a “grass roots” organization comes
into its being, it’s own and it’s future.
Way back we joined for there were enemies at the gate. Uncaring politicians
who were more concerned with helmet
laws to control after a catastrophe than
education to put control in the minds of
riders / voters. We came together and
said in unison “What can WE do?” We
did have more time then, put together
meetings and parties so like minded individuals had a place to discuss what WE
For 2015, Will County’s Safety and Education program gave our presentation to
just over 1700 students, including several new driver’s education teachers from
Olivet Nazarene University. I don’t
know for sure, but that may be a record
number of students for the chapter.
Thank you to everyone who helped make
this possible. It’s a good feeling knowing that so many students and teachers

go outside. Pick up your tickets at the
next meeting or from Harlem Addison
Auto. Let’s make this party better than
any other Chili Party.

The Chicago Motorcycle Show started in
the late 60's or early 70’s by a motorcycle club, as a neutral event where clubs
of all colors could come and sell their
wares, parts and such. It was at the Chicago Amphitheater. 32 years ago it started at McCormick Place Chicago by J &
P Cycle, and is the only legendary event
in the Chicago Land area. It’s a show
and swap meet, with cash prizes and trophies. Some of the things that took place
were: Motorcycle Stunt Show, Freak
Show, Burlesque Show, Comedy Show,
Live Music, and vendors from all over.
This event monetarily supports Charity
Organizations of US Veterans. We
would like to thank everyone who came
out to volunteer some of their time to
help us out at our vendor booth. We
signed up new members, talked about our
June 5th Topless Tour as well as providing information as to what ABATE is all
about.

This is how acquaintance became a friend
and soon you and your wives made a date

bar hopping to put up fliers for the next
Abate run. Soon wrenching on bikes at
the house with the most tools became the
norm. Before the party, phone calls were
made to others who might like to hear
some common sense, and soon 2 tables
were filled with lively conversations and
laughter.
There were many smart and resilient leaders then. Todd Vander Myer,
Little John Harris and many others wrote
about us as a voting block; slaying
DRAGONS in our voting booths; their
articles in the state paper made me feel
like a Hero!! Abate seemed on top of this
political game where voting numbers
meant everything is on the table. No secrets, just truth, justice and the AMERICAN WAY. Meetings and Parties at the
Legion Hall were overflowing, the treasury was there also to help encourage several new chapters and help other organizations; Toys for Tots, Freedom Run,

Hello fellow Freedom Valley members.
Hope you have gotten 2016 off on a good
note. The chapter has voted and we are
delighted to bring into the Rally In The
Valley fold Freebird chapter, to help the
other three chapters out with more man
power and also more ideas as to how to
make Rally In The Valley more successful. We have decided to have our annual
Broomstick Pool and Blind Darts in
March, at Cue n Brew, date not yet set.
Also our Valentines Dance has been
set, but you will have to see your newsletter for the exact date. We also would
like to welcome Birdman and AR15 as
our Membership reps and Pat and Deb
Diaz as our Sponsorship reps. The month
of January will begin the planning phase
of Rally In The Valley 2016. I will post
the place of the meetings in next months
letter. Hope everyone had a good and
safe New Years Eve and day. Be safe out
there, watch for distracted motorists. If
you ride during the winter, be sure to
keep careful watch for vehicles. Also, be
sure to clean your bike as salt residue
will form on your bike from riding any
roads that have been treated with salt or

Cap and I met about 10 years ago at a

one of my brothers that day and that

Cap was a wonderful loving friend and
mentor to many .He always had a shoulder to cry or lean on no matter how big
or small the problem. His memories and

Last month while I was typing this little
blurb for you (yes, this is all for YOU!) it
was almost 70 degrees outside. What a
difference a month makes! In two days
the high temp is supposed to be 16 degrees! YIKES! I guess we have to look
at the positives here…every day is one
day closer to spring!!
I am typing this prior to our January meeting and prior to our bowling party. I will
have to report on both of those next
month. There really isn’t a lot going on
right now. We do have our chili cook off
set for March 13th. Again, this is just a
fun event. Bring your best pot of chili
and you may win a prize! At the very
least, you get to hang out and have few
adult beverages with your ABATE fami-

& coffee. We have been reflecting on
the winter so far and how nice it is has
been to see so many motorcycles out on
the streets this time of year. If you are
venturing out this winter, ride smart and
ride safe, and have fun! Remember winter riding conditions can be twice as dangerous when you have half the wheels as

We are hoping to do some riding together
this year. We have not actually scheduled
any runs, but I am hoping that we can get
some large numbers of us together to attend other rides or just put together a spur
of the moment lunch run or supper run…
or whatever the hell we wanna do run.
Please feel free to come to a meeting and
present any ideas you have for a ride. We
will hope to show our support for other
Chapters and Clubs in the area as we have

The Chapter membership numbers are
holding steady at around 135 active members. There are still a lot of non-renewals
who we would love to have back. If you
know someone who has not renewed, ask
them to come to a meeting or to an event
and check things out. Maybe we can restore their faith in the Chapter. Our fight
for our rights has not lessened, but our
member numbers have. Even if you can’t
make it to the meetings or the events, or if
you just simply don’t want to make it to
an event…if you still ride and enjoy the
freedom to do so without a lid, without a
bright yellow vest, and without the fear of
being pulled into a motorcycle only
“roadside safety check”, write a check for
your dues and know that your voice as an
active member will be heard. Pass that
message along to those who may have
The only thing I have left is to relay the
total numbers for the Safety & Ed program. I was able to visit the local Driver’s Ed classes a total of 14 times this
year and spoke to 317 students about motorcycle safety and awareness. I received
a lot of good feedback and had some great
interaction with the young drivers you
will likely be sharing the road with this
summer. If anyone is interested in joining
me for a class, I am always open to having a visitor.

hope you are enjoying this above average weather we
been having and hope all is well at your homesteads.
At our last meeting held 1/7 we discussed the events
we will be planning along with some nice scenic
rides. Some of the events are the Polar Plunge, IGA
Cook Out, Easter Egg Hunt and Membership / Awareness Drives. More events are in the works and will
be announced during the year. Like always you can
also find info on our ABATE Facebook page and at
Loie's Custom Bike Shop 725 N Sherman St. in Lincoln. A big thanks to the shop for displaying the info
and our Salt Creek products for sale along with new
membership forms for our chapter.
The new officer patches and copies of the new by-lays
will be available at our next meeting Feb 4th and to
all our new members it's always the first Thursday of
the month and held at Logan Lanes, officers 6:30-7:00
all members 7:00-? and thanks for attending, A BIG
thank you to Ron Thornton for all the members he
has signed up in the last couple of months. Coffee is
on me my brother.

How’s everyone enjoying this crazy winter? We had a couple of riders who braved
the cold for a New Year’s Day ride, Phil
and I were not among them because it was
too cold for us. My New Year’s Resolution is to get an article for our chapter in
the newsletter each month. We are going
back to our roots as we will be focusing on
our friendships and enjoying our down
time until we have a new battle to
face. Although we do not have any major
fights going on when it comes to our rights
it is still important that we stay active with
our chapter so when the fight does arise
we are already united and well-informed.
Our meetings will be the first Saturday of
the month at 1pm located at Lovington
Legion. Remember ABATE is ran by our
members not our officers, who are only
there to keep some sense of order but for
those of you who have been to our meetings know we not only get off track a lot
we also tend to be extremely infor-
mal. We need our members to let us know
what your interests are and what you
would like to see more done. We have
also decided that on nice days we will be
going for a ride after our meetings for
those who wish to join in on a fun ride
with good friends.
It is time for our most important event of
the year and that is our Broomstick Tournament. We enjoy not only seeing our old
friends but making new as well so be sure
to bring your friends and introduce them to
ABATE. I know it’s been a long time
since we have really connected with all of
you but we are looking forward to getting
back out into the real world. We have our
Broomstick scheduled for February 27th at
Kel’s Place in Atwood. We will begin our
festivities at 4pm with sign up from 5-6
and the tournament starting promptly at
6pm. We ask that you bring your favorite
Chili/Soup and register by 5pm the winner
this year will be receiving a plaque with
our infamous Broomstick on a motorcycle,
although some of you have renamed it a

In our continued attempt to find a good
day and time for our meeting, they have

What is going on?
On Saturday, February 6th our neighbors
to the east, Liberty, will be having their
anniversary party. It starts at 5PM at “the
Local on 45”. It is always fun with drawings, silent and live auctions, great food
and socializations. It is one of their big fun
-raisers and fundraisers. Please consider
giving them your support.
Wednesday March 2nd is our Legislative
Day. It is an excellent opportunity to meet
and chat with your lawmakers in Springfield, both in their offices and in the evening reception.

night. Plaques with infamous Broomstick
on a motorcycle will also be given out for
first and second place winners of our
Broomstick Tournament and first place
will also receive a cash pay-out of
$50. We will be holding a tub raffle that
will be drawn after the next to last round
of the tournament. If you have anything
you would like to donate to our tub please
give it to anyone of our officers or bring it
that night. Our 50/50 raffle winner will be
announced after we have our winner of our
Broomstick Tournament. We will also be
passing out prize boxes to those who either
join or renew their memberships that night
and will be entering your name in a drawing for a bigger prize, which will also be
announced with the Tournament and 50/50
winners.
As in the past we will be running around
Shelby County in March and April reaching out to each of the mayors in Shelby
County so that they, like our governor can
proclaim May as “Motorcycle Awareness
Month”. In 2015 100% of the Shelby
County mayors cooperated with that
awareness program. Good job to those
who went riding with a purpose (Rick
Wiley) and if you get a chance, thank your
local mayor.

courthouse. I am hoping to see friends

There is usually a run that can be joined
after the blessing.
Our chapter is in jeopardy of folding if we

friends, family, co-workers, etc. about the
importance of ABATE of Illinois and how
we ensure our rights and freedoms not
only as motorcyclists but in other aspects
of freedom such as ATVs and other offroad bikes. I’m sure we all know farmers
and hunters that could be affected by the
loss of ABATE fighters. So I look forward to seeing you all at the Broomstick
Tournament and if you have anyone that
cannot make it but wish to join feel free to
bring their membership in that night.
In May we will be joining us with Crossroads and Liberty for “Operation Windshield Wash”
The State Party will be held June 23rd 26th. It is always a good time.
You can also attend the monthly meetings.
They are held at the Sit-n-Sip in Shelbyville on the first Wednesday of the
month at 7PM.

End in Campus on Sunday January 8th at
1:00pm with 12 members attending. After
calling us to order, Brian led us in the Pledge
of Allegiance.
The December meeting was held at
too late of a date for the meeting minutes to
make the paper.
Brian gave the Treasurer's Report.
He talked to Sonny, who said the taxes have
been filed. The Treasurer's Report was accepted.
Brian gave the Legislative Report.
The ABATE State Seminar is next weekend,
January 15th and 16th. The ABATE Of Illinois Swap Meet is on February 21st at the
State Fairgrounds. Legislative Day is March
2nd. Motorcycle Awareness Rally is on May
1st. The State Party is at the Menard County
Fairgrounds in Petersburg from June 23rd to
26th. Tom Bennett stopped by to thank us
for our sponsorship of the Town Hall meeting last fall. The majority of the work at the
capitol rright now is on the budget. Tom
asked us to submit suggestions on bills that
we would like to see introduced. He talked to
the mayor of Pontiac about the use of land
by the prison for an ATV park. He did not
talk to DNR, not sure who has jurisdiction.
The Legislative report was accepted.
Brian gave the Safety And Education Report. Brian talked to Bernie. He said
he couldn't set up any Motorcycle Awareness
Presentations because he had the flu. Prairie
Central High School contacted Bernie requesting a presentation. The Safety And Education Report was accepted.

mysteriously taken down. The Activities

We now have 105 members. We had 2 members transfer to Eastern. The Membership
Report was accepted.

Under Old And New Business, the
food pantries in Dwight & Livingston county
each sent us Thank You letters for our donations. We might get the raffle bikes & set up
a booth at the races in Fairbury. There is a
list of activities for this year on the last page
of the state paper. The chapter voted to buy
some raffle tickets to support the East Central Region party, to be raffled off later.
There was some discussion about buying a
billboard at Fairbury Fairgrounds to help get
our name out there, Mark to get a quote on
the cost.
The chapter thanks JP Trails End in
Campus for hosting our meeting.

At our Jan meeting Bruce ran the show
for the first time as our President.
All minutes, budget and BOD reports
were accepted.
We spent some additional time discussing the BOD meeting, and Iron Riders
activities for 2016. We need to keep our
numbers up and there are several folks
who need to get signed back up.
We are talking about having one big
ride for the veterans run, and the Bruce
WE HAVE RAFFLE TICKETS, contact Mikey D and get some to sell. The
current ticket selling champion Bruce
has pulled a hamstring, and won’t be
performing as in years past, he needs
our help.
The next Iron Riders meeting is March
5th at the Sit N Bull in Hudson Il.

HB4320 has been proposed because the
state does not have a budget. The bill
would release funds for the motorcycle
rider training. Currently, no one is scheduling classes because there is no money.
Legislative Day is March 2 in Springfield.

Gary said he is going to work to get more
ads for our website.

Welcome to 2016! Hope everyone had a
great Christmas and New Years. Our year is
starting off on the run with new officers
bringing in fresh thoughts and ideas. January
10 was our first event of the new year... the
Annual Snow Ball Run. A hearty high of 20
degrees, strong winds and snow the night before... what more can you ask for. There were
a lot of cars and trucks on this run.
As I write this, I am getting ready and looking
forward to the state seminar-seeing everyone

The January 2016 meeting of Shoal
Creek ABATE was held on Sunday, January 3, 2016 at the Vandalia VFW.
Meeting called to order by President
Nordyke. Pledge was led by Sergant at
Arms Al McDowell.
Secretary’s report was read. No Treasurer’s report was given. Legislative report
was given with updates on legislation.
Legislative day is March 2, 2016.
Fayette County is working towards offroad licensing permit requirements.
Membership reported that on current
member totals. Safety & Education re-

port by Jamie Ward that she did 2 presentations at Vandalia High School. BOD
rep Sam Robinson reported that all chapters are in compliance. Products reported
State bike tickets are available for sale.
Public relations had no report. Newsletter had no report.
Activities report was given by Eric Ward.
On Sunday, February 14th, our annual
Chili Cook off will be held at the Greenville VFW starting at 1 pm. The cook off
is the major fundraiser for the Toy &
Food Run. An entry fee of $5 per class
of chili to enter the cook off. We are also
in need of items for the silent auction.
2015 Hard Ass awards were presented.
Brady Torbeck won 1st place with 8,980
miles, Dale Nobbe was 2nd with 4,188
miles and Jim Pryor was 3rd with 3,885
miles. The Hard Ass Contest will run
from the Chili Cook off start date through
December 31 every year.
Fallen Riders committee reported Hog
Roast tickets are still available.
South west region report stated that Marble Run books will be available at the
February meeting.
Unfinished business consisted of whether
to still do the Ride and Roll books for
2016. It was decided we will continue
for this year. Depending on sales and
participation, this may be the last year for
the book.
New business consisted of the annual
attendance drawing for 2015 will be at
the February meeting. Reminder to all
members if you sign up 10 new members you get one free annual membership. Also turn all membership renewals and new applications into Tammy
Nordyke, membership chairman.

“Pendulum
swings like a
pendulum do.” That’s half a line from
one of my favorite Roger Miller songs.
As the pendulum swings it means time
marches on. As time marches on things
change and sometimes we don’t want or
want to accept the changes. I think as I
get older I get worse at accepting
change but “They “say the first step at
solving a problem is admitting you have
a problem. Now is it change or not getting my way of keeping things the way
that I got use too and change is now
forced upon me? Now I get angry because change is forced on me. Such is
the way things change in ABATE. Majority rules and if my argument can’t
sway your and other point of views then
change is going to take place. Such is
the case with the lawyer fiasco. I don’t
want to see ambulance chasers on every
ABATE flyer, article or news letter I
pick up but if that’s the way the majority wants it then so be it.
Last month I wrote that we were going
to do a June Marble Ride possibly. Sheila had the idea to move it to May as this
May will be our Chapter’s 25th Anniversary. This is up for discussion at an
upcoming meeting soon. We still have
about fifteen of our original thirty-five
members by the way. We held our organizational, first meeting at Sandy’s
Runway by Scott Air Force Base in May
of 2001. That bar has changed a lot of
hands over the years and just recently
has again. St Clair ABATE member and
one of our news letter advertisers Kim
Schwee, owner of TR’s recently pur-
chased it. It’s called South Gate now
and speaking of advertiser’s I took my
New Year’s Day ride out to Sit N Bull
in New Memphis. Stan Denton the owner, ABATE member, supporter of the
chapter has all you can eat chicken every day of the week for $8.95. It is also a
Marble Run stop so plan accordingly for
a good ride. Eat To Ride-Ride To Eat?
By the time this is published our only
fund raiser for ourselves will have come
and gone. This is the fourth year we
held our Annual Meat Shoot on MLK
weekend. When we started this Thunder
Alley had their swap meet the first
weekend of January and that was the
only thing going on. The ABATE State
Seminar is on MLK weekend and we
don’t know when Thunder Alley will
have their swap January meet and now,
yes now, Thunder Roads Magazine is
putting on a swap meet that same day.
At the February meeting we will be discussing moving our meat shoot to October or November as we can’t and won’t
attempt to compete with other motorcycle groups or organizations on events.
Also if we have it at the end of the year
we have a better idea how to budget our
chapter in the upcoming year.
Our chapter meetings are always on the
2nd Thursday of the month at TR’s
Place at 7:00pm. If you haven’t been to
a chapter meeting in a while then you
should stop by and check out how we
are running your ABATE chapter.

Hi My Brothers & Sisters, Winter finally arrived and with a vengeance, colder
than a well diggers a** while last week
it was flooding. But before long it will
be riding season again so it's time to get
the work started on those little improvements we all know that just got to be
done. One of A.B.A.T.E.. of Illinois
most important days is coming up on
March 2nd. It is our Legislative Day at
the Capital, a chance for us to get up
close and personal with our Legislators.
This being an election year they will be
more receptive of the needs of the voters. It is way cool to see a bunch of Bikers walking the Halls of the Capital
buildings and then a lot of the politicians come over to our reception that

always the 1st Wednesday of the month

VFW for allowing us to meet there each
and every month. Hope to see a lot of
old and new faces at the meetings in

Hi All, Winter is here and it sucks just
like I remembered. We drew the winner
on our TV raffle, it was Brian Johnson
and his wife chose to take the money
option. We will be deciding what to raffle off for 2016 at the February meeting.
Which will be at the AmVets on the 6th.
At the meeting we will also have presen-
tations for the "Pay It Forward" event in
July. We had The Amy Center, CASA,
& ARC brought up as possibilities, voting will be at the March meeting on the
5th at the Sportsmen's Club.
We had 38 members and 1 guest at our
January meeting at the American Legion
in Mt Vernon. We passed out copies of
the 2016 Calendar. On February 20th we
are having a Broomstick Pool Tourna-
ment at the American Legion in Mt
Vernon. Sign up will start at 4pm with
first game at 5pm. then on February 7th
we will have a "Cager Scavenger
Hunt" On March 12th we are going to
have a Hot Dog Roast out at Truman
Sellers place out in the country.
Me & Arley spent an afternoon getting
the paperwork for the Jefferson County
Raffle and Poker Run permits and the Mt

evening to get their picture taken on our
raffle bike with folks from their districts. Democracy in action is something
to see. I would like to see several from
each of the Chapters in our region at
this event.
