THE MOST HOLY TRINITY
Three fishermen lived in a faraway Island in Russia. Years
ago some missionaries went there, preached the gospel
and all three became catholic; nobody ever went there for
many years. However, one day the bishop of that area decided to make a short visit to the island and learn more
about their life. But when he arrived he discerned that they
did not know even the Lord’s Prayer. So he spent all his
time and energy teaching them the Our Father and then left them, satisfied with his pastoral visit. But when his small ship had left the island
and was back in the open sea, he suddenly noticed the three fishermen
walking on the water – in fact they were running after the ship. When
they approached it, they cried out. “Dear bishop we have forgotten the
Lord’s Prayer you taught us, “will you say it one more time for us”. The
bishop, overwhelmed by what he was seeing and hearing asked them,
”But dear brothers, how then do you pray?” They answered, “We just
say, we are three you are three, have mercy on us.” The bishop, awestruck by their sanctity and simplicity said, “Go back to your island and
be at peace. Recite the same prayer” (Adapted from Leo Tolstoy- “The
Three Hermits")
This Sunday we celebrate the feast of the Holy Trinity; it is a doctrinal
feast and a great mystery. The mystery of the most Holy Trinity is a
basic doctrine of Faith in Christianity, understandable not with our
heads, but with our hearts. It teaches us that there are three distinct
Persons in one God, sharing the same Divine Nature. Our mind cannot grasp this doctrine which teaches that 1+1+1 = 1 and not 3. But we
believe in this Mystery because Jesus, who is God, taught it clearly, the
Evangelists recorded it, the Fathers of the Church tried to explain it and
the Councils of Nicaea and Constantinople defined it as a dogma of
Christian Faith.
God is always a mystery beyond human perception and comprehension. It is our human tendency to test and prove everything scientifically
and believe it. But God cannot be explained by laboratory experiments.
God is to be understood only with faith because God is a mystery. How
then do we follow a God who keeps such a deep mystery?
Thomas Edison, the inventor, once remarked: "We don't know what
water is. We don't know what light is. We don't know what electricity is.
We don't know what heat is. We have a lot of hypotheses about these
things, but that is all. But we don't let our ignorance about these things
deprive us of their use." The truth of that statement is real. Most of us
do not know how an electric light works, how a telephone or a TV
works, but this does not prevent us from using them. Though we do not
know how the electronic equipment works still we use it and we believe
it, because of its outcome and effects. Though we do not know the
engineering and science behind every piece of equipment, we never
say that I am going to stop using my TV or refrigerator. So we need to
apply the same common sense to our Faith in the doctrine of the Trinity. Though we do not know the theological and philosophical side of
God still we need to believe in God because of God’s work and his
grace that we see in everyday life. God is invisible and beyond our
comprehension but we experience his presence and grace. The whole
creation and all created things in the world are clear proof that there is
a creator who is God. So let us have a look at the world and see how
marvelous the creations of God are. Therefore with simple faith let us
believe in God looking at the whole creation of God.
Have a Great week

No podemos comprender

OPEN LETTER TO OUR CONFIRMANDI
OF SAINT TERESA, SAINT ROSE AND
SAINT MARTIN
Now that the confirmation masses for our
parishioners have been completed with
last Thursday confirmation mass at St.
Rose of Lima, I would like to offer this
message specifically to our Dear Confirmandi.
It is a pleasure to greet you, on behalf of your family and friends,
and the entire Catholic Community here in Kankakee, a sincere
congratulations for the landmark that you have achieved – your
sacrament of confirmation! When I visited your classrooms, I
talked with you very closely about what I believe are the implications of receiving such a beautiful sacrament.
FIRST, I said that Confirmation marks the beginning of maturity
in one’s faith. When you were baptized, most of you had no idea
what you were receiving. Confirmation is the sacrament that
seals your commitment into the faith that you received, now that
you are aware and empowered to choose God in your life. Now,
you can say, “This is what I truly believe in!” and it is yours forever.
SECOND, confirmation is a declaration of your LOVE OF GOD.
Through prayer and regular participation in mass, we express
this love and we deepen our spirituality. Yes, as you receive the
fullness of God’s Spirit in Holy Confirmation, you are called to live
it out well and express it in every aspect of your life – that is your
spirituality, true spirituality.
THIRD, loving and choosing God means loving and choosing His
Church. We have a clear historic claim that Jesus was the one
who founded the Church, which we know today as the Catholic
Church, the true Christian Church founded through the apostles
and spread to the ends of the earth, as Christ envisioned it. It is
the Holy Spirit that has guided the Church through the centuries,
and will see it through to the end of time. I invite you now, as
mature and able Christians to have passion for God’s Church, to
love the Body of Christ, and to do your own part to make it known
today.
And FOURTH, Your confirmation is about you, responding to the
call of excellence. Because the Spirit of the Lord is in you, you
are now fully ready to live a holy life. Praise the Lord! Your family and friends, and the entire Church, is excited to witness your
excellence. Show us how you do it! For your own sake, take to
heart what you have received. May it inspire you, and challenge
you to be the best version of yourself, ever! God bless you always!
With you in the same Spirit,
Fr. Sunny Castillo
