The SCAadian Little Red Hen - Barony Beyond the Mountain
The SCAadian Little Red Hen An Anonymous Anachronistic Parable One day a Little Red Hen thought it would be fun to hold an event. “Who will come with me to the Baronial Meeting to discuss this?” she asked. “Not I,” said the Keyboard Commando. “I have a dungeon crawl that night.” “Not I,” said the Grouchy Old-Timer. “Meetings aren’t run the way they used to be.” “Not I,” said the Perpetual Whiner. “It’s too inconvenient, and gas is too expensive, and …” “Then I will,” said the Little Red Hen. So she went to the Baronial Meeting, and found there the same few hens and roosters who always show up. They talked about it, decided to have the event, and got enough volunteers to get the ball rolling. “Who else will help me with this event?” asked the Little Red Hen on the Baronial email list after the meeting. Not I,” said the Keyboard Commando. “But here are ten pages of suggestions.” “Not I,” said the Grouchy Old-Timer. “I’ll be too busy reminiscing with friends about the Good Old Days.” “Not I,” said the Perpetual Whiner. “Nobody ever does what I tell them to, and my back has been hurting me, and …” “Then we will,” said the Little Red Hen and the Usual Volunteers. “But if you change your minds we’d love to have your help.” The day of the event dawned bright and clear. People from all over the Kingdom came to enjoy it, including the Keyboard Commando, the Grouchy Old-Timer, and the Perpetual Whiner. “That was exhausting but fun,” said the Little Red Hen. “Now who will help me clean up afterwards?” But there was silence from the Keyboard Commando, the Grouchy Old-Timer, and the Perpetual Whiner, for all three had left as soon as the event had ended. “Then we will,” said the Little Red Hen and the Usual Volunteers. And they cleaned up the site and brought the Baronial supplies back to be stored for the next event. Afterwards the site invited the Little Red Hen’s group back to hold more events, and many of the attendees wrote their thanks for the great event. But not everyone was satisfied. “You didn’t run things according to Proper Period Production Planning Procedures, which *I* once read an article on,” complained the Keyboard Commando. “You didn’t have the activities the event had in my day,” pouted the Grouchy Old-Timer. “Some of the Baronial officers didn’t volunteer enough,” groused the Perpetual Whiner (who hadn’t helped out at all). “So why don’t YOU step up and run an event the way YOU think it should be done?” asked the Little Red Hen. “Why don’t YOU volunteer to run the activities YOU want to see? Why don’t YOU run for Baronial office if you think you can do better?” “Outrageous!” exclaimed the Keyboard Commando. “I shared with you my superior knowledge. It is YOUR job to take care of the mundane details.” “The effrontery!” huffed the Grouchy Old-Timer. “The fact that you and your Usual Volunteers ran this event is clear proof that only a small cabal of newcomers is actually permitted to do anything in this Barony. I shall complain to the King at once! And to the BOD! I have connections, you know.” Continued on page 4 Baron & Baroness - Baron Dorigen of Lewes, bob.schlain@att.net, and Mistress Eloise of Coulter, krisbenysek@att.net Seneschal – Mistress Anarra Karlsdottir, t_neill@ hotmail.com; Deputy – Mistress Elizabeth Vynehorn, muirnesue@aol.com & Lady Leandra deLeon, leandrasuz@aol.com Chatelaine – Lady Gwenllian ferch Llewellyn, lisakat3@ sbcglobal.net Chirugeon - Lady Aurelia di Stellari, lady_aurelia@hotmail.com Chronicler – Lady Johanna de Glastingburi, janeofglastonbury@yahoo.com; Deputy - Lady Emme Attewater, mary@ikeepbees.com Company Captain of Archers –Siobhan inghean Chormaic, amc382@aol.com Exchequer – Lord Severin Festschdermacher, larry.laudenslager@att.net Herald – Baron Cormac MacEamon na Connemara, cormac_east@yahoo.com Knight Marshall - Master Frodo von Halstern, lordfrodo@comcast.net Marshal of Fence – Vacant Marshal of Thrown Weapons – Michael Christian Longstryde, michael.seneschal@yahoo.com Mistress of Arts & Science – Mistress Ana Ilevna, ilevna@hotmail.com Mistress of the List – Vacant Web Minister - Master Frodo von Halstern, lordfrodo@comcast.net Youth Marshal - Karrah the Mischievous, nightmaretoreality@yahoo.com Dragon’s Aerie - Master Frodo von Halstern, lordfrodo@comcast.net Ravenhill – Michael Christian Longstryde, michael.seneschal@yahoo.com Sundays, 1-4 p.m., Authur Murray Dance Studio, Glen Lochen Marketplace, 39 New London Turnpike, Glastonbury, CT. Continued from page 1 “Impossible!” snapped the Perpetual Whiner. “I’m a very busy person. You obviously have no regard for MY time and MY needs.” So the Keyboard Commando, the Grouchy OldTimer, and the Perpetual Whiner spent the next year writing letters and e-postings to all and sundry how the Little Red Hen was so inconsiderate and lazy and unwilling to listen to Good Advice, and they all felt very good about themselves. In fact they felt so good that they never noticed that the Little Red Hen never volunteered to run an event again. Reprinted with the kind permission of Lord Gideon haKhazar, Chronicler of “The Masthead”, Barony of Dragonship Haven Weaving A&S Day BBM is holding an all-day weaving workshop at the New Britain Public Library on Saturday, January 19. Ana Ilevna, BBM MoA&S ilevna@hotmail.com Simplefare Thanks Greetings, Everyone! Wow, Simplefare was great fun this year! We had a record number of fencers, lots of fun classes, great food and a whole lot of willing people pitching in for setup and clean up. Thank you to the staff and all the volunteers who helped. I had a great time; and in walking around I saw a lot of other people having a great time, too. Clean up was very well attended and for that I thank people especially! I have a knife that was found in the kitchen but does not belong to BBM. If you lost a knife at Simplefare, please contact me and describe it. Thanks. ~ Anarra, Seneschal I will echo our seneschal's words in expressing my sincere appreciation to everyone who worked in the kitchen before, during and after Simplefare, especially to my co-kitchen coordinator Lady Johanna of Glastonbury . She was with me every minute and she and her husband, Chris, hauled the entire kitchen collection of equipment and supplies in their truck back to its storage location on Sunday. Great thanks also to Baron Jehan and Master Luke and Hugh of Carolingia. Their service was invaluable in cooking, plating and serving the many dishes out to our diners on time and smoothly. Baron Salaamallah and his Lady Gwendollyn continue to be Simplefare stalwarts, shopping, baking desserts and designing recipes. With our wonderful kitchen staff, we were able to spell Salaamallah from working in the kitchen during the day to allow him some time to enjoy his true passion, playing and teaching board games. Retired Baron Dinsdale and Baroness Alfgifu were part of an incredible cleaning staff that had us cleaned, closed and out the door by 9:20 p.m. You are too many to name, and I confess, I don't know some of your names. But your dishwashing, drying, sorting, stacking and loading skills are commendable. It is often said that Simplefare is an event that runs itself. That can only happen with the help of the many volunteers who each play a part, no matter how small, to ensure that everyone has a good time. We hope the feast was to your liking and that you will join us again next Fall Simplefare. ~ Evaine fyrdd Brangwen Claire Bessette I just wanted to take a moment to express my appreciation for everyone who worked to make Simplefare a wonderful day. It was my first Simplefare out of the kitchen in… I don’t know how many years. At least thirteen. Probably more. Many people worked very hard to create a fun event. I know that I’m going to miss some – please don’t be offended. The day went by in a bit of a blur. In no particular order, specific thanks to: Lady Evaine for stepping up and running the kitchen. I missed spending the day with you. Additional thanks for letting me play through a few times, and understanding that I was missing my soup pot. Lady Johanna and her husband Cristofero for working non-stop all day in the kitchen. I know how hard you guys work hard every year – I appreciate it. I missed seeing you. Masters Luke and Jehan and Lord Hugh, who came down from Carolingia to help cook. A Simplefare with Master Luke in the kitchen just feels Right to me. Master Jehan – the service for high table was something to be proud of. It was truly a pleasure to be so well cared for at our first high table, and even more of a pleasure that it was arranged by such a good friend. Mistress Damiana, Lord Griffith (Griffyth? Gryffyth? Griffin? No idea…), Drogo (I hope I got your name right,) Lord Hugh, and any others who served high table. It was a lovely experience – you spoiled us all evening. Even if it did take me awhile to remember that I didn’t need to grab, chew, and bolt back to the kitchen. Drogo also deserves thanks for his assistance in the kitchen. Lady Leandra, for all of her behind the scenes work, and her patience with my nerves. Thank you for understanding. Many thanks to everyone who stepped up to compete in the two Baronial Championship tourneys. It was a pleasure to watch. Lord Gelleys, for going out of his way to find me so that I could come watch the heavy list tourney, and for holding it for fifteen minutes so that I could feed Charlotte some lunch. She and I both appreciated that. Don Wyatt – for good advice, good conversation, and the loan of a warm cloak. I felt terribly guilty about taking it, but I was clearly colder than I thought I was. Lady Aurelia, for watching Charlotte for close to the entire day. Thank you for not merely doing that, but for being wise enough to realize that I was going to need it and planning accordingly. I truly cannot thank you enough. Master Cormac, I would thank you for your assistance in helping me with court, except for your verbal replacement of my beloved husband with my esteemed father. We’ll chat about that later… :-) Lastly a huge thank you to everyone who made my first Simplefare as Baroness as memorable a good time as my very first Simplefare was, all those years ago. I didn’t get to spend nearly the time with people that I had hoped or planned to, but the time I did have was wonderful. ~ Eloise, Baroness Chicken and Cherry Pie I’ve always liked this pie from the day I first had it at an event. The late Mistress Minowara Kiritsubo no Ason, known far and wide as Kiri, in addition to being a Laurel for her Japanese research, a Pelican for her unending service and a Baroness of Dun Carraig, was an exemplarity cook. When I lived in Atlantia I was privileged to attend events where she was the head cook; and everything she made was awesomely delicious and well researched. We once hosted a redacting class at our house where another friend chose this recipe of Kiri’s to use as an example. It’s always very, very good. I wrote to her husband, Baron Philip of Gent , OP, for permission to print this recipe in the Chanticleer, which he graciously granted. Anarra Karlsdottir, OL CRUSTA EX CICURIBUS (Another Crust with Tame Creatures) From De Honesta Voluptate, by Platina: If you want to put pigeons and any other birds in a crust, first let them boil; when they are almost cooked, take them out of the pot, then cut them into nice pieces and fry them in a pan with a goodly amount of lard. Next put them in a deep dish or an earthen pot that has been well greased, and where a crust has been rolled out on the bottom. To this dish you may add plums and cherries or sour fruit without going wrong. Then take verjuice and eight eggs, more or less depending on the number of guests, if there are a few, with a little juice, beaten with a spoon; to this add parsley, marjoram and finely cut mint, which can be blended after being cut up, and put this all near the fire, but far from the flame. It must be a slow heat so that it does not boil over. All the while, it should be stirred with a spoon until it sticks to the spoon because of its thickness. Finally pour this sauce into the pastry crust and put it near the fire and when it seems to have cooked enough, serve it to your guests. It is very nourishing and slow to be digested. It has few harmful effects, checks the bile and irritates the body. Redaction by Baroness Minowara Kiritsubo no Ason, Companion of the Order of the Laurel, Companion of the Order of the Pelican: 2 lb. Chicken Pastry for a single crust 1 cup plums and/or cherries (if dried, soak in white wine until soft) 1/2 cup white wine 6 tsp. White wine vinegar (Or 1/2 cup plus 2 Tablespoons verjuice if you can find it.) 8 eggs 1 1/4 tsp. each of marjoram, mint and parsley 1/4 tsp. salt 1 pt. chicken stock 1/2 cup chicken stock 1. Boil chicken pieces in 1 pt. of stock until almost cooked. Bone the chicken pieces and brown in a little olive oil. 2. Line a deep dish pie tin with pastry, then fill with chicken and fruit. 3. Pour the sauce over the pie. Bake at 350 degrees until browned on top. Sauce: 1. Blend eggs, wine, vinegar and 1/2 cup of the chicken broth together. 2. Add finely minced parsley, marjoram and mint. 3. Cook over a low heat, stirring constantly, until thickened so that it clings to the spoon. Notes: 1. I used a mixture of white wine vinegar cut with a little white wine to approximate the verjuice that the original recipe calls for. 2. I used sour cherries for the fruit, which produced a good balance with the flavor of the chicken.
