MISSION
The Beaverdale Neighborhood Association
is neighbors working together to promote
the social welfare of the Beaverdale area by
bringing about civic betterment and social
improvements for the common good and
general welfare of the community.

engraved bricks are being installed in the Streetscape.
I see plenty of people using the Adirondack chairs
along Beaver Avenue. We’ve got color coming up
in our newly-planted flower beds and plenty of
color coming up in this, our first full-color issue of
the Beaverdale Sidewalk. Our brand new website
at www.beaverdale.org is looking pretty good too.
We’re happy to announce that the line-up of
musical acts for the Beaverdale Bluegrass Festival has
been finalized. We’re lucky to host Sans Souci, the
Maytags, Mr. Baber’s Neighbors, and Bassel and the
Supernaturals on July 23rd at Tower Park. Our joint
committee with the Beaverdale Betterment Coalition
diligently searched for some of the best bands in the
Midwest. All are major catches for the neighborhood
and we couldn’t be more excited.
As we discussed at the last quarterly meeting in
February, the members of the Meredith Neighborhood
Association have unanimously voted to request
to merge within our Beaverdale Neighborhood
Association. The Meredith boundaries are west of
Beaver Avenue, north of Douglas and Aurora, and
east of 51st Street. We’ve been looking through
Beaverdale’s collection of historical documents for our
upcoming centennial and were surprised to find that
much of this area actually used to be considered part of
our neighborhood.
We’ll be setting some more time aside to talk
about and vote on the request to merge in our next
quarterly meeting in May. Please note that the date
has been changed to May 11, 2016. The meeting
will still be at 7:00 PM and still at the Northwest
Community Center. We’ve also posted a survey at
www.surveymonkey.com/r/beaverdalemeredith for
people to give their opinion on the issue. If Beaverdale
approves, it would then be voted on by the city’s
Neighborhood Revitalization Board and then voted
on by the City Council.
Finally, one of the best things about being on
the Beaverdale board is all the events we get asked to
attend. I was more than happy to serve as a judge at
the Beaverdale Veterans of Foreign Wars chili-cook
off in February. I was a little intimidated to find that
Des Moines’ own George the Chili King was another
judge on the panel. I told him that judging a chili
cook-off with the Chili King was like judging a
debate with a Supreme Court Justice. I think he was
amused. The winner of the cook-off is below.

Neighborhood Association can do for you, don't
hesitate to let me know at

BEAVERDALE MEGA SCRUB
BEAVERDALE FARMER'S MARKET
SCRUB stands for Spring Cleanup to Reduce Urban Blight.
Last year, over 2,010 tons of trash, 1,242 tons of yard waste, 95
tons of tires, 1,866 appliances, 7 tons of household waste, and 7
tons of electronics were collected.
A Mega SCRUB Event is hosted by select neighborhoods within
their section of the City. The Beaverdale Mega SCRUB event will
be held on Saturday, May 21, 2016. Residents are welcome at all
of the other events as well. Again this year, there will be five Mega
SCRUBs scheduled for the third Saturday of each month through
November. Document shredding will continue at those locations and
appliances will be collected in roll-offs. For more information, visit
www.dmgov.org/departments/publicworks/pages/scrubevents.aspx.
The Beaverdale Farmers
Market opening day is
Tuesday, June 7 at 4:30 p.m.
at a new site on Urbandale
Avenue, between Beaver
and 42nd Street. Enjoy
musical entertainment by
Asphalt and Stained Glass.
We’ll feature many repeat
performers and vendors, plus
some appealing new ones for
the 15-week season.
Several
blocks
of
Urbandale Avenue will be
closed for a few hours for
the weekly market, but
access remains open for
residents and emergency
personnel. You’ll find most vendors along the north side of
Urbandale Ave., with some activities on the grass medians
and on 42nd Street by Acanthus Lodge. Customer parking is
available on-street and in the paved lots behind Acanthus, with
entry and exit from Beaver Avenue.
We welcome interested volunteers to contact us to help with
market operations. We are seeking a volunteer to expand our
social media efforts, especially on Instagram. Please contact Jane at
515-238-3245 or email us at info@beaverdalefarmersmarket.org.
Visit us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/BeaverdaleFarmFest),
where we keep up with community and food news. Our website,
www.beaverdalefarmersmarket.org includes a calendar with musicians
and Beaverdale happenings, the market map and list of vendors. Kerri
Photography will be on hand to snap photos on June 14 and will have
a booth on opening day. Check out her great photos on our online
photo gallery; she always captures the fun and delight of market days.
Join us as we ‘Plant the Seed!’ for another season of great food, local

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
TOM CADY SWIM LESSONS
A LIFELONG LOVE OF TEACHING
The saying goes, “When you love what you do,
you never work a day in your life.” This describes local
Beaverdale resident Tom Cady, a swimming instructor.
Cady has made a love of swimming into a life-long career, and at 86 years
of age, he’s not stopping. “I can’t imagine doing anything else,” said Cady.
Although Cady has used public pools for lessons, he’s also been giving
lessons in his own Beaverdale backyard for over 25 years. It was then that
he installed a stainless steel, two and a half foot deep pool in his yard, the
first of its kind in Iowa. Measuring 20’ by 40’, he says it was specifically
designed for teaching. “Most pools start at three foot, but this pool is
two and half feet,” Cady stated, “this makes it much easier for even our
youngest swimmers.” He also says they keep the pool at a cozy 90 degrees,
noting “the students are able to focus better when they’re comfortable.”
The swimming business has also been a family affair. All four of
Cady’s daughters were swim instructors at one point or another, and his
oldest continued to teach with him until retiring two years ago. Cady
said a majority of his students have come from one of our local schools,
Holy Trinity. The ages he’s taught range from two years old all the way
up to 70 years old. For the younger children, he says he likes to keep
WELCOMING
his classes small. Cady says the younger children are his favorite to
teach. “I enjoy helping them discover swimming for the first time,
finding the joy in it,” he admitted. As they grow up, the classes
grow a little larger, but he tries not to have more than 6 children at
a time. “A majority of children stop lessons once they reach high
school, unless they’re on the swim team,” said Cady.
Cady's swimming career started at North High School in the
1940s as a member of the Polar Bear swim team. He then continued
on to the University of Iowa where he also swam, as well as played
football and wrestled. Cady's adult life revolved around swimming. He
managed some of the local Des Moines public pools such as Holiday
Park Aquatic Center in West Des Moines and Wakonda Club for 12
years each. He’s also been a swim coach and instructor at some of the
local high schools. Besides teaching swimmers, he’s also been a swim
instructor with the Red Cross, where he’s held his certifications.
Besides the open lessons, Cady has also offered private lessons
in the evenings. These have been for adults wanting to learn to
swim better (including fishermen), competitive swimmers looking
to improve their form, and even tri-athletes. Cady has also been an
instructor for adult swim classes through the Des Moines Community
Education program. Cady will be offering classes starting the first
Monday in June, after school is out, through July.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
NOMINATIONS FOR ANNUAL RODINE MICKLE DINNER EVENT
RECOGNIZING EXTRAORDINARY NEIGHBORS & VOLUNTEERS
Des Moines Neighbors allows all the neighborhoods in Des
Moines to recognize each neighborhood's top volunteer, business,
and public employee each year. These individuals are then recognized
at an annual dinner at the World Food Prize for their contributions
to their respective neighborhoods and to the city at large.
The BNA nominates Eugene Buckmiller as our Citizen of the
Year. Eugene served a full six-year term on the board and is also a tireless
volunteer for the Beaverdale Fall
Festival. After growing up in Orient,
Iowa, and serving his country in the Air
Force during the Korean War, he moved
to Beaverdale and has become one of
our most active members. He directs
traffic at neighborhood SCRUB events,
builds the floats for the Fall Festival
parade (including a 6ft tall rocking
chair and 4ft tall Beaverdale brick),
helps with the highway clean-up, assists
with the annual flower plantings and

maintenance, oversaw the repair of the Beaverdale monument sign, and
secures the candy for the annual Easter Egg Hunt along with transporting
the Easter Bunny. He does all this and more with infectious energy and
enthusiasm for all of our neighborhood volunteers. He’s the first one to
give his time and he does it with passion. Beaverdale and the city of Des
Moines are better because of him.
The BNA also nominates Chef’s Kitchen as our Business of the
Year. Chef’s Kitchen gladly opens their doors for Beaverdale committee
meetings and neighborhood fundraisers. They also provide food for
our quarterly meetings. They’re well-known for hosting the Isiserettes
at Beaverdale’s National Night Out. Beyond the neighborhood
association, Chef’s Kitchen hosts a food bank drive and sponsors a
senior golf outing with proceeds going to the Drake Adult Literacy
program. They generously donate to local schools, churches, the United
Way, and the Animal Rescue League of Iowa and provide discounts
for our firefighters, police, and military. They also host dinners for the
Roosevelt football team, the Drake girls basketball team, and Iowa
Public Television. Des Moines is fortunate to have many great locallyowned business, but few give back as much as Chef’s Kitchen.

BEAVERDALE TURNS 100 YEARS OLD IN 2017
CENTENNIAL COMMISSION PREPARES YEAR LONG CELEBRATION
"Beaverdale really is a state of mind, has been for a long time. It
has no mayor, no council, it isn't incorporated. Beaverdale residents
themselves disagree about where Beaverdale begins and ends or
if, indeed, this blessed spot has geographical boundaries at all. Yet
Beaverdale people live first in Beaverdale, then in Des Moines. It's
always been that way." –The Des Moines Tribune, September 30, 1967.
One hundred years ago, the neighborhood we now know as
Beaverdale and much of Northwest Des Moines was actually named
Urbdandale. When the residents in the current city of Urbandale
incorporated themselves as a suburb of Des Moines known as Urbandale
Village in 1917, we knew we needed a new name. We sorted it out, as
we do now, with a neighborhood meeting. In 1917, we chose the name
Beaverdale because our area was near a stream known as Beaver Creek.
In 1967, a major event was held to celebrate Beaverdale's 50th
anniversary. With 2017 approaching, the Beaverdale Neighborhood
Association has created a Centennial Commission with the Beaverdale
Betterment Coalition, the Beaverdale Fall Festival, and the Beaverdale
Farmer's Market to prepare for a year's worth of celebration as we
turn the big one hundred in 2017. If you have any ideas for events
or promotions that you would like the commission to consider, please
email Sean Bagniewski at seanbagniewski@outlook.com. Stay tuned
for more details!

3 DEDICATED BNA BOARD

few have so many people staying on long enough to actually meet them.
Thank you to Eugene Buckmiller, Erik Reno, and Marlyn Freese for six
full years of dedication to the Beaverdale Neighborhood Association!
Your health is our
primary concern.

ANOTHER EXCITING EASTER
EGG HUNT IN BEAVERDALE
We had a great day for the Easter Egg Hunt this year! The rain held
off and the sun was shining, and, as always, we had a great showing of kids
and parents! We had just under 1500 total eggs spread out for the three
age groups. Within those eggs we hid 240 special tickets that granted the
receiver a special prize from the prize tables for their specific age group.
The majority of those eggs were filled (to the rim!) by the Drake
Women's Basketball Team– huge THANK YOU to them! Also, a
special thank you to Beaverdale Books and Beaverdale Confections
who helped us with prizes. This year, we also had donuts and coffee
for our volunteers and families. Thanks to Green Family Flooring
for providing the donuts and Friedrich's Coffee for donating coffee!
We also want to thank the many volunteers that came to help that
morning. We couldn't have done this event without you!

JOIN THE "LOST BEAVERDALE" FACEBOOK GROUP
IT'S BEAVERDALE NOSTALGIA AT ITS BEST!
More than 18,000 people are
members of the popular Facebook group,
Lost Des Moines. On that page, people
can share stories, memories, and pictures
of their favorite parts of the history of
Des Moines. Former members of the
Beaverdale Neighborhood Association's
history committee have saved boxes of
pictures and mementos just for Beaverdale.
The board also has a collection of articles
from the Des Moines Register and the
Des Moines Tribune preserved by the late
Delos Swanson. A Facebook page, Lost
Beaverdale, was recently created to share
all the pictures and articles in Beaverdale's
collection with all of our neighbors. Because
it's a group, anyone from the public can
post their own memories and their own
pictures of our great neighborhood. We'd
love to have you join the group yourself at

BNA QUARTERLY MEETING & NEIGHBORHOOD MERGER DISCUSSION
OPEN TO THE PUBLIC – WEDNESDAY, MAY 11TH, 7PM
The BNA Public Affairs Committee would like to invite you to our
second quarterly meeting of 2016 on Wednesday, May 11th, 2016. The
meeting will start at 7:00 p.m. and be held at the Northwest Community
Center, located at 5110 Franklin Ave. We will have a representative from
the neighborhood’s newest restaurant, Reed’s Hollow, to give a short
presentation and answer any questions. We would also like this meeting
to be used as a public discussion forum for the proposed merger of
the Beaverdale and Meredith Neighborhood Associations. The BNA
Board created a survey we would like our neighbors to complete at
www.surveymonkey.com/r/beaverdalemeredith. A link to this survey can
also be found on our BNA Facebook page and Beaverdale.org website.
