Quote of the Day Cocos (Keeling) Islands News (cont’d) Berita Pulu Cocos (Keeling) (seterusnya) Health is a state of complete
physical, mental and social wellbeing, and not merely the absence
of disease or infirmity. ~ World

GONG-GONG TAGGING
Thought for the Day "You are what you say and think
daily, if only you keep at it. Great
men always have a starting point,
from their heart via their lips to their
lives." ~ Unknown
The Department of Fisheries kindly asks for the support of the Cocos community with ongoing research of
the Gong Gong (Lambis lambis). In late April, researchers tagged a small number of Gong Gong with
uniquely coded resin tags (see picture below) to help study movement and growth rates of the species
around Cocos. If you see or catch a tagged Gong Gong can you please note the following details and return
it to the water where it was caught:
1. Tag Number
2. Date
3. Location (Lat/Long or an approximation using the map below)
Please provide details to Scott Evans: scott.evans@fish.wa.gov.au or (08) 92030183
Jokes of the Week Two kindergarten kids are
talking while having a lunch
break.
Girl: What is the capital of
America?
Boy: Washington D. C.
Girl: No! "A" is the capital of
America. You already forgot our
lesson: capitalize proper nouns!
A little boy, at a wedding looks
at his mom and says, "Mommy,
why does the bride wear white?"
His mom replies, "The bride is in
white because she's happy and
this is the happiest day of her
life."
The boys thinks about this, and
then says, "Well then why is the
groom wearing black..."
Two men were walking their
dogs together. The first guy with
a Chocolate lab and the second a
Chihuahua.
The first guy says, "Hey, you
want to get something to eat?"
The second guy replies, "Yeah,
but they all have signs that say
'No Dogs Allowed'."
The first guy with the lab puts
sunglasses on and hands the
other guy a pair. "Follow my
lead," he says.
As he walks into the restaurant a
waiter stops him and says, "Sir,
no dogs allowed."
The man replies, "It's O.K., this
is my seeing eye dog." The
waiter apologizes and leads the
man to a table as the second
man enters.
The same waiter stops him but
the guy says, "This is my seeing
eye dog. I'm with the other guy."
The waiter replies, "Sir, you
can't fool me, you have a
Chihuahua."
The man freaks out and says, "A
Chihuahua? They gave me a
Chihuahua?!"
“TAGGING” GONG-GONG
kembalikan ditempat dimana dia didapat:
1. Tag Number
2. Haribulan

News from
Geof’s Bird’s
Nest
This Forktail Swift is an amazing bird as it never stops flying except when it nests. It can fly nonstop for a year catching bugs as the smaller picture shows. They follow storms and use the winds to glide on.
Four birds are here at the moment and came in on the northerly rain storm we had mid May. The only time they stop
flying is when they nest which they have to do on a cliff or tall building as they need to jump off to get airborne. Their
feet are so small they cannot get airborne off the ground.

Cocos (Keeling) Islands News (cont’d) Berita Pulu Cocos (Keeling) (seterusnya) Green Living Tips Tips to Saving Water in the
Garden
Plant selection
Consider not only your area's
current rainfall, but what's
projected for the future.
Sprinklers
1 in 10 adults and 3 in 10 children get the flu each year…..what is the flu?
Many people confuse a “cold” with the ”flu”
Look to buy a sprinkler that
throws water closer to the
ground in large drops.
Both are caused by viruses that are spread easily by close contact with an infected person or object.
Drip irrigation
A cold is caused by viruses that occur at any time of the year. Generally people have good immunity to a cold
virus because they have been exposed to it before. They have milder effects, and get better soon.
Drip irrigation consists of a
series of pipes with drippers
hanging off them that deliver
water directly to where it's
needed.
The flu is caused by seasonal viruses that change every year. Often people have not been exposed to these
viruses and have poor immunity. Effects are more severe and can lead to complications like pneumonia,
especially for the elderly, very young, or people with poor health.
What can you do to protect yourself and your family?
Stay in good health:



eat healthy ie: 2 fruit/5 veg
get a minimum of 7 hours sleep per night
exercise 20 minutes per day (even a 20 minute brisk walk)
Good hygiene:



Irrigation timers
If you use an irrigation timer, set
it to run half the normal time,
but run it a second cycle a
minimum of half an hour later.
Watering time
The best time of the day to
water is either just on sunrise or
just on sunset, as this minimizes
water evaporation.
Mulch, mulch, mulch
cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough
dispose of tissues after use
wash your hands
Mulching retains water. Mulching
is one of the most effective ways
to reduce water needed in a
garden - up to 50%.
Consider a rainwater tank
Get an annual flu vaccine:
Flu season in Australia is from May to October. Vaccines are available from May. The 2016 price is
$21.00 and offered free to people who are likely to have complications ie: very young, elderly or
people with poor health.
Some employers offer free flu vaccines to their employees as part of their pandemic planning.
Contact the health clinic on WI 9162 6655 or HI 9162 7609
Given the amount of water
gardens require; consider adding
a rainwater catchment system to
your property - it can help act as
added insurance for a reasonable
supply of water during the dry
months or when your local
authorities
introduce
restrictions.

Cocos (Keeling) Islands News (cont’d) The IOTs are home to a large number and diversity of land crabs,
especially Christmas Island which is well known for its endemic red
crab (Gecarcoidea natalis) and their annual migration. Research
indicates that there are up to 20 species of land crabs found on
Christmas Island and at least 10 on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. On
top of this remarkable diversity not matched anywhere in the world,
over 100 crab species have been recorded from the reefs and
shallow waters around the IOTs and form an important part of the
coral reef ecosystem.
Berita Pulu Cocos (Keeling) (seterusnya) Under the proposed recreational fishing rules for the Cocos (Keeling)
Islands, mud crab species in the genus Scylla will have a bag limit
of 2 per day. This means that a person may not take more than 2
mud crabs per day. Berried (egg-carrying crabs) are totally protected
and may not be taken so they can breed.
Feel free to contact Kim Boothman, Community Education Officer for
the IOTs, at any time on Kim.Boothman@fish.wa.gov.au or Work:
9203 0345 / Mobile: 0418 915 281.
Crabs can be divided into two groups – the suborder Brachyura or
‘true’ crabs and the suborder Anomura. True crabs such as the red
crabs have greatly reduced abdomens which fold beneath their
heads. This group includes Mud crabs which are present on the
Cocos (Keeling) Islands in low numbers. It also includes many
species found on the coral reef, shore crabs and ghost and fiddler
crabs.
The other group of crabs, Anomura, has larger abdomens and their
last pair of legs is greatly reduced in size. Included in this group are
the squat lobsters (actually crabs), porcelain crabs, the infamous
robber crabs (Birgus latro) found on Christmas Island and Pulu
Keeling, and the closely related hermit crabs, often seen in hundreds
on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. Hermit crabs are often used as bait
on Cocos, so the pressure on these crabs is increasing and there are
reports of localised depletion.

Cocos (Keeling) Islands News (cont’d) Berita Pulu Cocos (Keeling) (seterusnya) Kepiting
laporan kekurangan mereka ditempat-tempat tertentu.

Public Notices Notis‐notis Umum Dodgy property spruikers promise the earth but deliver thin air
You might have seen or heard ads from property spruikers currently travelling around Australia claiming to
be ‘wealth creators’. The type who offer ‘free’ seminars which can include free meals, catchy chants,
expensive wine give-aways to a lucky participant, and all sorts of gimmicky amusing add-ons.
Well, there’s an old saying ‘There’s no such thing as a free lunch’ and these seminars prove the point.
Seminar participants are put under incredible pressure to sign on the dotted line or miss out on the ‘deal of
a lifetime’.
Sure there are some companies out there who offer realistic property investment opportunities, but it’s not these guys. They’re rogue operators who
use high pressure sales tactics to get people to sign up before getting proper, independent advice. If you sign up at these seminars you’re more likely
to lose money than make it.
Consumer Protection suggests you don’t bother getting information or attending these seminars. The spruikers pretend to be financial advisers who
can help you make lots of money through property investments with low risk, but this definitely isn’t the case. The sad truth is they are just in it for
themselves, accept generous commissions once the deal is done, and leave investors with a dud deal.
We’re joining other Australian states in a national campaign fronted by Paul Clitheroe. We advise you always get independent professional advice,
identify realistic returns and know the legal and financial risks associated with any investment before signing a contract. In particular always be wary if
a seminar promoter, or other property advisor:
-
advises you to buy an investment property you can’t see/ hasn’t been built;
plays down the risks and costs, and side-steps questions;
gets you to buy expensive courses, books and DVDs to learn their ‘secrets’ (promotional material that doesn’t mention goods will be sold and
offer a 10 business day cooling off period breaches consumer law);
offers loans so you can sign up for more investment courses; or
pressures you into signing up on the day.
In particular avoid rent-to-buy schemes. These target people desperate to get into the housing market or who are finding it difficult to sell their home.
Rent-to-buy contracts require you to pay a deposit as well as a premium on top of rent in the hope of purchasing the property at a later date. All this
can be lost if, in the end, finance can’t be raised to eventually complete the sale.

Penipuan pembujuk harta menjanjikan sedunia tetapi memberikan setipis angin saja
investment sebelom menyain kontrak. Selalu berhati-hati jika penganjur seminar, atau penasihat harta lain:
-
menasihati kamu untuk membeli harta investment yang kamu tidak boleh lihat/belom lihat dibuat;
memainkan risiko dan ongkos, dan mengelakkan soalan;
apa yang dijual dan menawar masa 10 hari ‘cooling off’ pelanggaran undang-undang pengguna;
Khususnya hindari skema sewa-untuk-membeli.
menyelesaikan jualan.

Public Notices (cont’d) Notis‐notis Umum (seterusnya) Family law I – you must try to negotiate about some family law disputes before you can apply to the Family Court of WA
These are short articles about legal issues that may interest you. They are not legal advice. You should always get individual legal advice for your
situation.
This article and the next article will deal with the requirement for separated couples to try to negotiate about their dispute about property settlement or
about children before either of them can apply to the Family Court to ask the Court to make orders.
The requirement to negotiate does not apply in cases of divorce or child support applications. There are also some situations where you will not need
to comply with the requirement to negotiate.
The requirement to negotiate also applies to other people (for eg, grandparents) who are significant in children’s lives and are having a dispute with a
child’s parent or parents about their role and ability to develop a relationship with the child.
The requirement to negotiate about disputes about your property settlement after you separate
A “property settlement” is the division of the property of a relationship after a couple (married or de facto) separates. It is in the form of orders made by
the Family Court. The orders are intended to end the financial relationship of the separated couple.
Where you and your ex-partner agree on your property settlement, you can ask the Family Court to make orders to reflect your agreement. This is
called an application for orders “by consent.” It is done by filing a Form 11 Application for Consent Orders (see the Family Court of WA website) with
the Family Court.
In cases where you cannot agree, the Family Court generally requires you to comply with the “pre-action procedures” before you are allowed to file an
application in the Family Court to ask the Court to make orders for property settlement. The idea behind the pre-action procedures is to try to get people who have separated to make a genuine effort to resolve their dispute before they are allowed to apply to the Family Court.
To comply with the pre-action procedures you must send the other party a copy of the pre-action procedures, investigate what alternative dispute
resolution services are available and invite your ex-partner to attend family dispute resolution with you. The procedures then set out what happens
next if the other party refuses to attend dispute resolution with you or you do not reach agreement. The procedures are available on the Family Court
of WA website.
There are exceptions to having to comply with the pre-action procedures. You usually won’t be required to comply with them where:
there is a risk of family violence,
there is a risk of fraud
a time limit is close to expiring
the other party has refused to negotiate
you could be disadvantaged if the other party knew you wanted to start family proceedings
the matter is urgent or
you have filed an application about the same problem in the last 12 months.
You should get legal advice if you think you do not have to comply with the pre-action procedures.
The requirement to negotiate about disputes about your children after you separate
Except in certain circumstances, the Family Court requires that parents must first try to negotiate an agreement before they are allowed to file an application in the Family Court to ask the Court to make orders about the arrangements for their children. This process is called “Compulsory Family
Dispute Resolution.”
So if you want to file an application for parenting orders (Form 1 application), you must also file one of two things with your Family Court application:
A certificate from a Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner (a “FDRP”); or
An application for an exemption from having to have this certificate.
You would normally only file a Form 1 application for parenting orders if:
family dispute resolution has been unsuccessful; or
you want to be exempt from having to take part in family dispute resolution and having to get a certificate.
If your family dispute resolution has been successful you may be filing Form 11 Application for Consent Orders or have entered into a parenting plan.
You can file an application for an exemption from having to have a FDR certificate if:
There has been child abuse, or a risk of it;
There has been family violence, or there is a risk of it;
The matter is very urgent;
There has been a serious breach of Family Court orders that were made in the last 12 months;
It is not possible to participate in family dispute resolution.
It is usually best to get legal advice before you file an application for an exemption. There are different requirements as to what else you need to file
with the Exemption Form depending on what ground of exemption you are relying on.
The Family Court of WA has an Exemption Form kit on its website that can help you fill in the form and tell you any other documents you need.
In the next article we will talk in more detail about the FDR process and getting an FDR certificate for parenting disputes.

Public Notices (cont’d) Notis‐notis Umum (seterusnya) Undang-undang Keluarga I - kamu mesti mencoba untuk berunding tentang berberapa perselisihan undang-undang keluarga sebelom
11 Application for Consent Orders (lihat di website Family Court of WA) dengan Family Court.
Aturan disediakan
di website Family Court of WA.
“Compulsory Family Dispute Resolution.”
Jadi kalau kamu mau melaporkan untuk pemerintahan ibubapak (Form 1 application), kamu mesti melaporkan satu diantara dua perkara kepada
lamaran Family Court kamu:
Telah ada penyiksaan anak-anak, atau ada risiko ia terjadi;
Pernah ada kejadian keganasan keluarga, atau ada risiko ia terjadi;
Perkaranya sangat penting;
Telah ada pelanggaran perintahan Family Court yang serius yang telah dilakukan dalam 12 bulan yang lewat;

Let’s discuss some of the most
common exercises that are
suggested for the lower back
pain.
 The most common cause of
lower back pain that is
noticed in lots of people is
the muscle strain or some
injury, the best treatment for
the back pain that is caused
due to this reason is rest.
Don’t keep a posture for a
long time and try to take as
much rest as you can. Because
resting will give comfort to
your muscles and this
relaxation will also decrease
their inflammation that is
actually causing this pain.
 People should try to stay
active in their daily routine
because their slow pace is
causing back pain.
ROUND 11
North Melbourne V Richmond
Many times the medical
treatments are suggested for
such pains but I must tell you
that there are many exercises
that can give you even better
results than the medicines.
7mate
11.30am LIVE
 The complete exercises to
lower the back pain are
pretty simple and easy to do
at home; if you are not aware
of them then you can over the
internet.
 Deep breathing has been
found to be very affective for
the body muscles, for the
back pain, lay down on the
floor and raise your hips as
much as you can. While the
hips are in the air practice
the deep breathing and stay
in this form as much as you
can.
 Stretching is also useful for
your lower back pain, to
stretch up the muscles of your
lower back lie down straight
on the ground and relax for
some time. Now raise both
your legs towards the sky and
raise them as much as you
can. This is a good stretching
practice for the lower back
muscles which will effectively
relax them.
So these were some of my
suggestions regarding the lower
back pain, I know the pain really
becomes too severe but these
simple things will help you to get
yourself out of that situation
without the aid of medicines.

The month of May is almost gone and already we have seen signs that the Trade
Winds are coming.
We've had some steady breezes, the highest being up to 61 km/hr on 2nd May at
11:37am during a rainfall event. Our only thundery weather so far this month
occurred on the 18th, from the morning and into the evening.
The most rainfall we received was on 13th-14th May with over 100mm in the gauge to 9am on Saturday 14th
(19.2mm on 13th, 94.8mm on 14th). We had another soggy day in 24 hours to 9am on the 19th, with 30.8
mm. Our rainfall (at the 23rd) sits at 231.8 mm for May 2016, bringing our yearly total so far to 1378.8mm.
Temperatures might have felt a little milder with only a few days this month reaching over 30 degrees, the
warmest of those days being on the 19th with 30.4 °C. Nights have been a little cooler as well with several
evenings dipping below 25°C – the coolest temperature was 24.2 °C read during our heaviest rain event this month.
Our winds have remained fairly Easterly/South Easterly with a little bit of northerly occurring between 13th & 18th as the Low pressure system
that brought us all the rain moved away from our vicinity.
