The United News The United Church of Heyworth a United Methodist Church From the Pastor: October 2016 Can you believe that it is October? Where does the time go? This is my favorite time of year, when the leaves turn brilliant shades of yellow, orange, and red. The leaves will begin to fall. And there is a briskness in the air with fall smells of campfires, football games, pumpkin spice, cookouts, marshmallows roasting, pumpkin patches, apple orchards, and fall festivals. It makes us all stop and count our blessings. With Thanksgiving right around the corner, we are reminded just us how blessed we truly are to have a God who created such beauty, provided us with such a loving church, families and friends! And first and foremost, a God who loves us so much! We are the family of God! And we too, are creating lasting memories and traditions that bind us together as one. I am so thankful for each one of you and the opportunity to serve our great and holy God, as the body of Christ. I would like to share with you some of the beginnings of our journey together in some pictures from Back to Church/Sunday School and our party, among other glimpses of our wonderful family. Thank you all for your hard work in putting together our new Sunday school, and party Five Practices Charge Conference In October, we are beginning the “Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations,” initiative. I am asking the congregation to read the book as named above and order both this book and the “Cultivating Fruitfulness” devotional and prayer guide. We will begin this series on October 9. Mark your calendar for October 22 at 4:30 at the Church What is Charge Conference? Charge Conference: Annual meeting of a church where officers are elected for the coming year. It also receives reports, reviews and evaluates the total mission and ministry of the congregation, and adopts objectives and goals recommended by the administrative council, or the Administrative Board. It also recommends candidates for the ordained and diaconal ministry to the District Committee on Ordained Ministry or to the Conference Board of Diaconal Ministry. Members of the Administrative Council, or Board, are members of the Charge Conference. The district superintendent calls the meeting and presides over it. Anyone may attend the meeting. “The Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations,” are: Radical Hospitality, Passionate Worship, Intentional Faith Development, Risk-Taking Mission and Service, Extravagant Generosity. Each one of these practices is vital to the health of any congregation. And we need to continually be running them through every committee, council, and ministry of the church. During these five weeks, you will go through the devotional book as a family on each of these practices. You are asked to read one week ahead the chapter concerning the practice that will be preached on for that coming Sunday. Also, there are small groups forming to talk about each of those practices in order to study and brainstorm about how that practice will manifest in The United Church of Heyworth and the community. We will then come together to talk as a whole, brainstorm together, choose some goals for the church, and take steps to attain those goals. Then we will celebrate together our accomplishments. There will be regular brainstorm sessions to choose our next project. We need to know how many books to order, so there is a sign-up sheet in the library for both books. If you can purchase those it is appreci- The primary responsibilities of the charge conference in the annual meeting shall be to review and evaluate the total mission and ministry of the church (The United Methodist Discipline, ¶¶ Baptized On September 25th, Camden Beckett Brown, son of Jeff and Megan Brown, was baptized during Partners in Healing Every month, churches throughout our area pray for the patients and staff of Advocate BroMenn Regional Medical Center and Advocate Eureka Community Hospital.
