tidligere danske generalkonsul i Sankt petersborg H.H.
dansker, Hans Christensen givard, bar i lommen under den katastrofale færd over atlanten i 1912
(kat.nr. 290).

International Auction in the autumn
welcome to the first of this autumn’s international auctions. The fine art section includes
paintings and drawings by the golden age pioneer C.w. eckersberg from his travels to paris and
rome. included is a charming motif of a mother and her daughter, painted in paris around 1811-12
(lot 38). The golden age is also represented by two large landscapes by Dankvart Dreyer, who is
otherwise best known for his small studies (lot 34 and 51).
among the top paintings are a number of village pictures by l.a. ring and ten works by Kristian
Zahrtmann. They include religious, mythological, and historical motifs. among these we can
include the painting of queen Caroline Mathilde and the royal physician J.F. Struensee, which
gives a brief insight into the legendary royal love affair (lot 78-87).
if you are interested in antiques, be sure to have a look at the gold plated, russian, early 19th
century bronze chandelier (lot 167), and the cylinder bureau, made by empress eugénie’s
renowned cabinet maker, paul Sormani (lot 130). Both objects originate from the collection of the
former Danish consul-general in Saint petersburg, H.H. Schrøder.
on extremely rare occasions, one has the opportunity to acquire items which belonged to victims
of the Titanic disaster. However, now your chance, as we are offering the pocket watch which the
adventurous Dane, Hans Christensen givard, had in his pocket during the fatal journey across the
atlantic in 1912 (lot 290).
at the back of the catalogue you will find jewellery and wristwatches from prominent producers.
included are a number of brilliant-cut pieces of diamond jewellery from ole lynggard’s ”Blomster/
Flowers”-line (lot 422-424), and a diamond bracelet made from platinum by the famed French
jeweller Cartier (lot 379).
Some of you may notice the oriental antiques missing from this sale. This is deliberate, as we are
saving them for Thursday november 29th, when we are planning our large oriental Sale.
in addition to the ”Modern art & Design” catalogue, the department will publish two special
catalogues: one with the collection of the late ove Højgaard andersen; and one with fine modern
furniture celebrating Finn Juhl, who would have turned 100 this year.
enjoy!

hammerprice 6.000.000 DKK.
In the 1880ies the main topic for Michael Ancher's paintings were the fishermen and
their everyday life. The turning-point was "Vil han klare Pynten", exhibited in 1880. In the
1890ies a new motif began to interest Ancher, romantic sceneries with young beautiful
girls. He was inspired by the new type of summer guests visiting Skagen and also by what
his painter friend P. S. Krøyer painted.

"Stue. Kunstigt lys. Paa et rundt Bord staar to tændte Lys i Sølvstager.
Paa Bagvæggen en Birketræs-sofa. Tilhøjre et firkantet Bord". A drawing room with a round table with two candles in silver candlesticks.
Behind a birch wood sofa and to the right a rectangular table. 1909.
Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 58 x 82 cm.
Sophus Michaëlis and Alfred Bramsen, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works
of Vilhelm Hammershøi no. 325.
Provenance: The artist's wife Ida Hammershøi. On the stretcher Hammershøi's address is written: Strandgade 25. ABR auction 265, 1971 no. 45.
The well-known furniture from Hammershøi's home can be seen here as
well as the silver candlesticks that he often depicts in his paintings. They
have a distinctive place in for example the two paintings "The mint collector" owned by The National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design,
Oslo and "Five portraits" owned by Thielska Galleriet, Stockholm. The very
interesting oval framing of the motif has also been used in two paintings
from "Spurveskjul", a summerhouse Hammershøi rented.

Mother sewing and her little girl with a doll in the doorway near a bridge, Paris.
1811-1812. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 41 x 32 cm.
This charming scene was carried out during Eckersberg's stay in Paris 1811-1812. The
women's characteristic headdress and the walking woman on her way to the market are
seen in other works from Paris. Among others in the painting "Udsigt ved Pont Royal fra
Quai Voltaire i Paris" (View near Pont Royal seen from Quai Voltaire in Paris) and in the
drawing "Den romerske vandledning i Arcueil" (The Roman aquaduct in Arcueil), both at
Statens Museum for Kunst (National Gallery of Denmark).
Eckersberg returned to the special motif with a view through a door or gate many years
later in 1844 with "Trængsel i en dør" (Bustle in a doorway) and again in 1845 with
"Udsigt gennem en dør til løbende figurer" (View through a door with figures running).

The present painting was executed during Jørgen Roed's 5 year
long stay in Italy from 1837-1841, more precisely, on a trip to
Naples that he went on together with his painter colleague Constantin Hansen from April to September in 1838. Both painter's
works from that trip are among the best from their years in Italy.
The specific motif from Terracina was painted by both Roed and
Hansen, but only Roed also turned his sketch into an overhauled
work, namely the present one.

ELISABETH JERICHAU
BAUMANN
b. Warsaw 1819, d. Copenhagen 1881
A mermaid. Unsigned. Oil on canvas.
97 x 130 cm.
Provenance: "Store Kro" in Fredensborg.
Elisabeth Jerichau Baumann was one of
the most productive female painters on
the Danish and international art scene
of the 19th century. Her large figurative
motifs made her one of a kind. Elisabeth
Jerichau Baumann's mermaid paintings
are good examples both of her creative
mind and her capability to paint figure
compositions.
She painted at least four "Mermaids",
one is in the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek
bought in 1873 by brewer Carl Jacobsen
for the museum, another is in a private
collection in Austria.
71
70
The mermaid motif was popular in the
19th century. Both Elisabeth Jerichau
Baumann's husband, sculptor Jens Adolf
Jerichau, and a dear friend of the family,
Hans Christian Andersen, the fairytale
writer, worked with the mermaid theme.
The later even commented on Elisabeth's
mermaids: "Du raader over Farvernes
Pragt! Du Sjæl har i Havfruens Øjne lagt:
Et Blink fra dig selv, Fra Aandens Magt!
Min Tak her i fattige Ord er sagt". (You
know how to use the beauty of the colours. You have given the mermaid's eyes
life with a wink from Your eyes, from the
power of the spirit. I can only thank You).

125 x 100 cm.
After a painting by N. A. Abildgaard
dated 1793 with the measurements 129
x 108 cm, today at Ribe Kunstmuseum.
The weighing of the human race or the
weighing of the soul is an old motif in
literature and pictorial art. The Greek
poet Homer, who inspired Abildgaard,
describes Zeus weighing both the
Greek's and the Trojan's destiny and also
the result of the fight between Achilles
and Hector.
Zeus is the Greek name for the Roman
god Jupiter.

on panel. 125 x 175 cm.
Provenance: Kunsthallen auction 487, 1997 no. 188, reproduced p. 53.
Abildgaard's painting from 1775 with the measurements 123 x 173 cm, in the Statens Museum for Kunst (National Gallery of Denmark), was inspired by The Iliad by
Homer and Sophocles' tragedy of Philoctetes.
The muscular man is the gifted archer Philoctetes, who is in deep pain after a bite of
a poisonous snake during the Trojan war. He was left alone on the island of Lemnos.
It was foretold that the Greeks could win the war with the help of Heracles' bow,
inherited by Philoctetes, and therefore he was released.

"Harpens Kraft. Kompositioner til en Kæmpevise". The Strength of the Harp. Compositions for
a ballad. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 207 x 260 cm.
Exhibited: Charlottenborg 1916 no. 168, as one of five works.
The painting illustrates one of five scenes from the Danish ballad “The Strength of the Harp” (Svend
Grundtvig, Danmarks Gamle Folkeviser (Denmark's old ballads) no. 40).
The story goes: "Hr. Villemand skal fejre sit Bryllup. Da Bruden paa Vejen til Kirke rider over Blidebro, bliver hun røvet af Trolden i Aaen. Villemand, der kommer for sent til at frelse hende, lader sin
Trylleharpe hente, og med den spiller han Løv af Lindetræ og Bark af Birke, Hornene af det bøvende
Fæ og Knappen af Mari Kirke. Han spiller de døde op af Mulde og til Slut sin Brud og hendes Søstre
ud af Troldens Vold".
Mr Villemand is going to celebrate his wedding. When the young bride on her way to the wedding
is crossing the bridge Blidebro, the troll in the stream takes her. Villemand comes too late to save
her and fetches his magic harp. He plays the leaves off the linden trees, the bark off the birches, the
horns off the cows and the top off the St. Mary Church. He plays so that the dead people come back
to life and in the end his bride and her sisters are freed from the violence of the troll.

Provenance: Swedish private collection till 2012.
Two other larger versions of the painting are known, both c. 64 x 50 cm. One mentioned as no. 448 in Sigurd
Schultz, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of C. A. Jensen under "Portrætkopier efter andre Malere" (Jensen's
copies of portraits by other painters). That one in the Museum of National History, Frederiksborg Castle. The other
one sold at ABR auction 770, 2007 no. 328 for 90.000 DKK. That one had until then been in the Krieger family. It is
noteworthy that the two larger versions are unsigned, while the present smaller portrait is signed Jensen and also
dated. The date is nowadays difficult to read.
Admiral Johan Cornelius Krieger had a long and eventful career in the navy. For many years he was in French duty,
among others as second-in-command on "Docqyen" on an expedition to Morocco. For a period he was commander
of a division of smaller ships trying to block smuggling between the island of Ærø and Funen. Also, he was a captain of various ships of the line and in 1788 he united a Danish and a Russian squadron in Køge Bugt (Køge Bay) in
the war against Sweden. Krieger was on important boards related to the fleet and its defence of Denmark. It was
said about him that he was an esteemed and skilled sailor and officer.

Paul Sormani (1817-1877) was born in Venice. Having
trained as a cabinet maker he moved to Paris where he
opened his first shop in 1847. Later his business expanded and he moved to the rue Charlot in 1867. Napoleon III's wife the Empress Eugenie was particularly
fond of furniture in the Louis XV and Louis XVI style.
She decorated her home with both original pieces and
spectacular reproductions in these styles. Sormani
was a cabinet-maker who was able to meet the Empress's high standards. Paul Sormani was a maker of
fine "meubles de luxe", whose work was described in
the 1867 Exposition Universelle catalogue as "toute
premier ordre" The firm also made eclectic furniture in
contemporary styles. It can be difficult to date Sormani's work, as the firm produced furniture for nearly
ninety years. However, when Paul Sormani died (circa
1877), his wife and son took over the business and from
this date onwards pieces are normally signed "Veuve
Sormani & Fils". Literature: Denise Ledoux-Lebard: Les

southern Jutland, second half of the 18th century.
H. 261 cm.
Among the best-known of the North Schleswig clock
makers is Green of Aabenraa, or Apenrade, according to his inscription on the clocks. The family can be
traced back to the English clock maker Peter Green,
who emigrated with his wife and children from Liverpool to Aabenraa, Denmark, around 1745 and worked
there until his death in 1795. He had two sons,
William and Jonathan, who also became clock makers
in Aabenraa, and finally William had a son Jakob, who
continued making clocks until his death in 1847. In
other words, the Green clocks span a period of more
than a century, but only the clocks from the first 5060 years are of a high standard. See D. Yde Andersen:
Bornholmer og andre gamle ure (Bornholmer and other
old clocks).

Pocket watch
from Titanic
Hans Christensen Givard was a well-travelled bachelor who
grabbed the chances that life threw at him. As a result, he
enjoyed unique experiences far from Danish shores – as far
away as Argentina and America. He grew up on a farm in
Kølsen, a village just outside Viborg in Denmark. It was his
neighbours who first told him about America, instantly
rousing his wanderlust. For 3–4 years, he travelled back and
forth between Denmark, Argentina and America.
The encounter with the ship that could not sink
In spring 1912, he was on his way home to Denmark after
working for six months on a farm in the Danish colony Tandil
south of Buenos Aires. When Givard and his two friends, farm
worker Einar Windeløv and blacksmith Martin Ponesell, arrived
in Southampton in the south of England, everyone was talking
about White Star Line’s newest luxury liner “Titanic”, which
had just arrived from the shipyard in Belfast and was berthed,
ready for its maiden voyage across the Atlantic.
The three friends saw an opportunity and took it, changed
course and, a few days later, sailed out of Southampton on
board Titanic, headed for America. At that time, Givard was
a well-dressed young man of 27 who, consistent with his
social standing, was travelling second class. When the disaster
occurred on the night of 14 April and the Titanic sank, the
adventure came to an abrupt end for the three friends. Givard’s
body was recovered from the cold Atlantic and later buried in
Halifax, Canada, on 10 May 1912.
The gilded pocket watch
The mortician’s report gives the following description of Givard:
“No. 305 2nd class passenger. Male, estimated age 36. Very fair hair
and moustache. Dark brown striped suit, black overcoat, white shirt
labelled ‘D.M.’, no socks, a white shoe and pink underpants.”
In the pockets were found a savings book, keys, some cash in a
wallet, a compass, a passport and a home town certificate. The
gilded pocket watch up for auction was also found in Givard’s
pocket and bears traces of salt water corrosion.
All his belongings left behind after the shipwreck were sent to
his brother Hans Christian Christensen Givard in Denmark, and
it is his descendants who have now consigned the watch to
auction.
