We will continue to build strong relationships, set high expectations and focus on academic achievement. We will begin hosting monthly Parent Workshops designed to support parents in helping their children with reading and math at home. These meetings will support our English Learner families and translation services will be available; please look for additional information that will include the monthly meeting dates. Please support the effort of our community leaders and join us for the monthly PTO meetings that take place the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 PM in the media center. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns, my goal is to support the needs of all of our families. Until next month….WE ARE HARWOOD…WHERE IT IS GREAT TO BE A HAWK! ~Corey Tremmel 2 Child Custody District counsel has advised us that school administrators must make decisions regarding release of children to custodial and non-custodial parents based solely on the documents and information they have before them. Thus, it is the responsibility of the parents to provide the school with the most recent court orders and other documents related to custody. Additionally, the custodial parent should file a statement with the school at the beginning of the school year and/or designate on the emergency card those individuals who may pick up the children after school. However, remember that if a court has prohibited one parent from access to the student, it is the custodial parent’s responsibility to provide the most updated documentation to the school for placement in the student’s file. Without this information, the school may be required to permit access to and/or release the child to either parent. Remember to take your things home The custodians have been told not to open classrooms for Harwood students and/or parents after dismissal at 3:59 p.m. Please make sure that they have everything they need - especially homework before leaving at the end of the day. School Pictures School pictures will be taken on Thursday, October 6, 2016 during the school day for Kindergarten through Grade 5. Choice selection envelopes will come home before the scheduled picture day. These are to be completed and returned the day pictures are taken (Oct. 6th). The students are to give these envelopes to the photographer when they have their picture taken. All Students will get their picture taken regardless if they are ordering pictures or not. There will also be a separate order form if interested in purchasing a yearbook. Ready to be Responsible HARWOOD BIRTHDAY TREAT SCHOOL-WIDE POLICY We recognize how special birthdays are and know how excited students are to share their special day with their classmates. However, we do ask that you follow the school-wide birthday treat policy when sending in treats to honor your child’s special day. The Following will NOT be accepted: Cupcakes or cake Pizza Flower/Balloon Deliveries Homemade Baked Goods Suggested/Acceptable Items: Packaged Snacks Non-food Items (Pencils/Stickers) Student Safety/School Security-Arrival & Dismissal Your child’s safety is Harwood’s primary concern; therefore, we need your cooperation in the parking lot. Like most elementary schools, the parking lot can be a problem if the rules are not followed. We need all parents, students and bus drivers to practice good safety habits so that students are safe at all times. Busses Only will use the front circle drive at arrival and dismissal. Parents who drop off or pick up a student must follow the parking lot traffic patterns. The drop off area is located on the south side of the building. Signs designate this area. If you are entering the lot from Southlawn, follow along the south side of the school and look for the signs. If you are entering the lot from Gunther, drive east in the lot until you see the new fire hydrant (we will also be adding arrows) and turn left to get into the drop off lane. Kindergartners will enter near their rooms. We do not want children walking through the parking lot by themselves. They must be escorted by an adult or cross at a designated area patrolled by a safety. Kindergartners will go directly to the classrooms. We will have adults and safety patrol members out and about to help in the parking lot. Let’s all work together to help make Harwood a safe place for everyone. If you have any questions, please contact the office (586 825-2650). 4 Harwood Elementary PTO Greetings Harwood community! This means federal funds will be allotted for extra services for any “at risk” children in any of the core academic areas. Under Federal Law, you as parents may request the following specific information about the professional qualifications of your children’s teacher: 1. Whether the teacher has met the state qualifications/licensing for their grade level/subjects. 2. Whether the teacher is on a temporary permit or waiver. 3. The teacher’s majors, graduate certifications/degrees, and discipline field. 4. Paraprofessional services and qualifications. For further information, please call (586) 825-2650. LATCHKEY Before-school Latchkey is designed for families who need childcare before school starts each morning and is available at all elementary locations. Latchkey opens at 6:45am and runs until the start of school. Students must be registered in grades K-5 to attend before-school Latchkey at their home school. The cost for attending before-school Latchkey is $7.00 per day for each child who attends. Discounts for families with multiple children are not available. Parents are responsible for providing transportation to their registered beforeschool Latchkey site. AFTERSCHOOL LATCHKEY PROGRAM Students who attend Harwood Elementary School will be transported to Angus Elementary, 3180 Hein, Sterling Heights 48310. Parents are responsible for picking up their children by 6:00pm. The cost is $7.00 per child per day. To register and for more information visit our website at: www.wcskids.net/latchkey. Bus Transportation There are articles not permissible to transport on school busses. Backpacks on wheels, musical instruments that do not fit down aisles and can be held on students’ laps, are a few of these items. Public Act 187257.1865 Section 65 (4c) speaks very clearly to this issue. “The school bus is not to be used for transporting freight, goods, or merchandise other than that which is carried on the laps of individual passengers.” We appreciate your support in enforcing this statute so that we can maintain the safest environment possible for our children. Transportation: 586-825-2960 6 Plan Ahead Please have children prepare for school the night before. Be sure lunch or lunch money, homework, books, gym shoes, and musical instruments are in or near back packs, so they are not forgotten. We are trying to promote student responsibility. Phone calls home for missing papers, gym shoes, lunches, etc. will not be allowed— only for sickness and emergencies. Service Squad Many of our fourth and fifth grade students have signed up for the 2015-2016 Harwood Service Squad. These students give valuable time and service to the school. Please be aware of them helping teachers and students in the classrooms, on the corners near our school, in the parking lot, and in the lunchroom. These students serve under the direction of Ms. Rosati and Mrs. Cusmano. F.Y.I to Parents/Guardians Please note the necessity of making the office aware of any changes in your child’s emergency card telephone numbers (additions or new), health issues, caretakers, etc. Also, work numbers are very important---your child’s safety is our main concern!
