U.S. POSTAGE PAID Tampa, FL Permit No. 8035 Temple B’nai Israel • Clearwater, Florida – Volume 7 Number 3 MARCH 2015 Dear Congregants; You may notice that this Temple Tablet is a condensed version of our normal bulletin. We are experimenting with some changes to the way TBI sends communication to our homes. The plan is for you to receive a full version quarterly, with THREE months of information on events, programs, life cycle announcements, information from our affiliate groups and more. The months in between we will send an abbreviated edition similar to this one. It is our hope that while managing our costs, you will be able to see a bigger picture of your Temple activities in a more timely manner thus making it easier for you to plan to join us for events. Of course we will continue to use the Temple website, our weekly e-mail blasts, regular phone messages and periodic special mailings to help keep you “up to date” on all of the exciting things happening with your Temple family. We are continually working to improve the communication of information to you. Please feel free to share your thoughts on this new bulletin format after receiving the first quarterly bulletin in May 2015. Shalom, Your Temple Staff Save the Date!!! April 12—Congregational Meeting—9:15 AM Please join us for breakfast as we proudly review the “State of the Temple” for this soon to be passing fiscal year. As this may be the last meeting in our “present” Social Hall, we hope you will join us to hear about the final design plans, renovation updates and recognition opportunities that so many people have worked so tirelessly on this year. Included in the short 90 minutes will be financial updates and affiliate reports. Looking forward to seeing you there. Your vote is needed. PESACH PASSOVER NO MATTER WHAT YOU CALL IT, IT CALLS TO US! Due to the renovation/construction at Temple B’nai Israel, the service will be held at the Largo Cultural Center. Lyna Schaffer, daughter of Stephanie Van Zandt and Benjamin Schaffer will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on March 7th, 2015. Lyna’s life has been chronicled in all the events in which she has participated in at TBI, including her baby naming, attending preschool, religious school, and now her Bat Mitzvah. Lyna is a competitive athlete who plays club soccer but thrives on any team sport. She feels as comfortable on the mountains of Colorado snowboarding as she does in the water scuba diving with her Dad and brothers. Lyna spends her summers at URJ SixPoints Sports camp where she melds her Jewish life with her love of sports. Lyna’s family has been active at Temple B’nai Israel for over 20 years. Lyna follows her brothers, Justin and Jacob, in having their B’nai Mitzvot at TBI. The Klein family will welcome family and friends from around the country to celebrate this special event. WELCOME NEW MEMBERS Stephan Alpert Sheila Buchwalter Bob & Lois Kunkis WE MOURN THE PASSING OF OUR MEMBERS Lou Balogh The Lessons That We Can Learn From People. Let's talk about someone interesting: Fran Segall. For about the past two years, Fran Segall was a congregant here at Temple B’nai Israel. Did you know her? A slender, dark-haired woman, quiet, just about 60, a widow who recently moved to Florida and joined our congregation. As unassuming as her description may be, she did something remarkable to benefit us and future generations. Sadly, this past October, at barely 61 years of age, Fran died of cancer. But with true charity, we were informed that she left our Temple a percentage of her retirement account, a gift exceeding $100,000. Despite the fact that Fran has two adult children living elsewhere in other Jewish communities, her intent was to leave money specifically designated to the "Preserve Our Future" campaign. Fran knew the importance of the continuity of our Temple. She felt that the voice of Reform Judaism in central Pinellas County must be heard beyond her own life. In the two short years in which Fran was a member, she found TBI to be a place to find friends, make connections, and feel valued. Fran wanted to ensure that we remain a strong and loving community of families and friends bound together as Jews. Fran wanted to help ensure that others like her could come to Clearwater and find as vibrant a congregation as she did. Most importantly, she loved that our Temple provides religious instruction so that our children and grandchildren can build a strong foundation in Judaism and its’ values. Through her generous gift, Fran’s name will forever be remembered for a blessing. Whether you have been a part of this community for a long time or short time, we can all learn from Fran's generosity. Please consider what you can do that will have meaning in your life and beyond. You know that the Temple is here when you need us, but it's times like these where we have a unique opportunity to be there for our Temple, to be part of its’ current growth and expansion. We all have an opportunity to step up, like Fran did, as we strive to "Preserve Our Future".
