JACK GRUNDFEST

Nathan, to the now famous “My Fair Esther” Purim schpiel
written by Andy Lawton and performed by a Temple allstar cast, to Megillah reading with Rabbi Harry Danziger,
to the Purim Carnival brought to us by LaFTY, to Miriam’s
Seder led by Sisterhood, to cooking at Our House, all the way
to the All Debbie All Music Membership Shabbat — March
was an absolutely wonderful month here at Temple! Thank
you to everyone who worked to make it happen. Our Temple
volunteers are truly the backbone of this Congregation. I believe
it was Winston Churchill who said “You make a living by what
you get. You make a life by what you give.” We have so many
congregants, both the volunteers and the beneficiaries, whose
lives are so much richer because of all the active volunteering
that takes place here at Temple.
April kicks off with Super Seder Strategies and More than
Matzah Balls Workshop, part of our LLL Holiday Experience
Workshop Series, on Sunday, April 1st. Our Temple Second
Night Seder will be on Saturday, April 7th. On April 8th we
will kick off a new session of Adult Religious School with two
classes: Middot-Jewish Moral Values taught by Annabelle Tuck
and The Torah of Your Life taught by Andy Lawton.
On April 13th we will recognize our Religious School Faculty
at Shabbat Under the Stars with special guest star and Jewish
musician Julie Silver. Shabbat Under the Stars was scheduled
on an earlier date this year to ensure that we have as many
Congregants as possible to show our appreciation to the
Religious School Faculty. Julie Silver will also be with us
for Shabbat services Saturday morning, April 14th and for
Religious School on Sunday, April 15th. There is a very special
event with Julie Silver planned for Saturday evening, April 14th.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR PASSOVER
Sunday, April 1
Passover Holiday Experience Workshop
10:00 – 11:00 Super Seder Strategies by Lynn Greenberg “My
intention for my workshop is to present the evolution of the
Greenberg family Haggadah and our Passover observance.”
I. A brief description of what is actually required to observe
the holiday: telling the story and eating the matzah
II. Our journey to create our own Haggadah: evolution from
the Maxwell House Coffee edition to our Arkansas Family
Haggadah (with samples of each phase)
A. Maxwell House Coffee edition (including an anecdote about its use in the Obama White House)
B. Modern Haggadot (including the most recent addition to the versions edited by Jonathan Safran Foer - The New American Haggadah)
C. How to create your own Haggadah with personal touches.
III.Turning the house over for Pesach: Getting rid of hametz;
changing dishes; preparing special foods; inviting guests
IV. Making Passover relevant in every generation...we WERE
there with the Israelites, we ARE there with everyone
seeking freedom, and we WILL BE there for everyone
seeking freedom through the ages.

Seniors Passover Holiday Lunch and Learn
11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m It’s a special luncheon for seniors, their
friends and families. Rita, Jo and their B’nai Israel crew will
cook and serve a tasty Passover lunch, and Jerry Jacobson will
croon lots of familiar tunes. You’ll want to hum along! Call the
office to RSVP and request transportation by Monday, April 9.

megawatt smile for nearly twenty years.Julie’s melodies are tightly
woven into our Shabbat services – especially “Sim Shalom” and
“Shir Hadash”. She’ll lead us in prayer and entertain us with her
music and enthusiasm for life.

TRANSITION TRANSMISSION
A note about Shabbat Services and the
first night of Passover/First Seder...
Please note the following change for Friday, April 6 only.
Due to the beginning of Passover/First Seder falling on
Shabbat, the schedule has been modified. The Service will
begin at 5:45 (NO Kabbalat Shabbat) and Kaddish will be
recited at approximately 6:15. This will allow Congregants
to attend First Seder. The Congregational Seder at Temple
will be Saturday, April 7. See below.

President's Message Continued...
On April 22, we will have our congregational Mitzvah Day
followed by a congregational meal for all the folks involved in
Mitzvah Day. Rabbi Harry Danziger will be with us again the
weekend of April 27th. Please look elsewhere in this edition of
the Chronicle for details about any of the events mentioned above.
I also want to let you know that the Rabbi Search Committee,
under the direction of your Administrative Vice President,
Janet Korenblat, has, as of this writing, received eight resumes
from interested candidates for the interim rabbi position.
The Committee met in late March to begin reviewing the
applications and weeding that number down. The Committee
will be scheduling interviews with select candidates during
the month of April. It is our objective to have an interim rabbi
in place by July 1.
I also want to add a special thanks to all the folks who are
assisting during the transition--particularly our Transition
Committee Chairs, Emily and Rich Lewis, and our Friday
night lay leader, Andy Lawton. Thanks to their leadership,
congregational life is running smoothly and we have had good
participation at services, classes and programs. If you haven’t
spent any time with us at Temple recently, and even if you
have, please join us for all the opportunities during April!

the rabbinic hiring process or anything else going on at

A big thank you to everyone who worked so
hard to ensure that Joan Nathan’s visit to B’nai Israel was
such a wonderful event. Jo and Rita planned a spectacular
vegetarian buffet using only Joan Nathan recipes. Their
crew put it all together for a fantastically delicious
supper. They baked Joan’s favorite beignet recipe. The
hamantaschen were spectacular; some think that they are
the best ever baked! Even Joan was duly impressed. Todah
Rabah once again to the Storthz Education Fund, CrainMailing Center of Jewish Culture, and the Ottenheimer
Brothers Foundation for their support of this program.

Sisterhood Speaks
Sisterhood ran a very successful BOOK FAIR in March,
organized by Lynn Greenberg and Corky Schroeder.
Others who contributed their efforts are Bonnie Jacobson,
Janice O’Shea, Rhonda Redwood, Helen Benes, Meg
Marion, Muriel Lederman, Doris Krain, Amos Lassen,
Susanne Roberts, Gina and Chuck Kokes, Wilma Diner,
Ruth Fein, Van Gates, Keith Nigro, Steve Weinstein, Scot
Goldsholl, Monty Fein, Janna Ragsdale, Paul Schroeder
and James Birch. We especially thank the Schroeders for
their contribution and the Sol Alman Company for storing
the books we didn’t sell. We hope to have another sale in
the early Fall.
Several Sisterhood women participated in training for the
reading-to-children project at Our House.
Thank you Annabelle Tuck for bringing this program to us.
During Mitzvah Day on April 22nd,
Lynn Greenberg will be running a project in the Library to
organize and catalog the books we have.
Please come and join in.
We will need volunteers to work in the Judaica
Shop at the Food Festival on Sunday, May 6th. Please contact
Bonnie Jacobson if you can help. (247-4050)
Sisterhood will be sponsoring another
Shabbat Service on May 11, Lag B’Omer.
The text of the service will be based on Abraham Joshua
Heschel’s The Sabbath. Anyone (male or female!) who wants to
be involved in creating the service or participating in it, please
let Muriel Lederman know ASAP the times when you can meet.
She will be organizing a meeting for the second week in April.

semester in Israel, which was partially funded by Men’s Club
and Sisterhood.

(The Passover Haggadah)
The Jewish people celebrate the first festival of the Jewish calendar on the 15th of Nisan, which comes on Friday, April 6 this year.
On this night, Jews all around the world will sit around the dining table with friends and family to retell the story of the Exodus
from Egypt. We look within ourselves and think about our modern time. What are the things that enslave us now? What fears
or false gods do we worship that tie us down?
THE TEMPLE CHRONICLE
Passover Seders take many forms and are conducted in many languages along with Hebrew, but they almost always follow the order
articulated in the Haggadah. The Seder developed soon after the destruction of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem in 70 CE. The Seder
form, with reclining guests and many courses of dipped foods, copies the Greek symposium. The Seder has evolved through times
of exile from Israel and oppression in the diaspora. The Haggadah has evolved through the centuries with themes that vary from
freeing Soviet Jews, to Vegetarian to Kabbalistic, from Feminist to Gay, Reform, Reconstructionist, Ashkenazic, Sephardic, Hasidic
and Yemenite, just to name a few, but common to them all is the theme, “In every generation, each individual should feel as though he
(or she) had gone out of Egypt.” We are enjoined to participate in conversation whose purpose is to build us up to hope and provide
strength needed to struggle for a brighter tomorrow. Children are encouraged to participate and adults are encouraged to teach
according to the understanding of the children. The Haggadah’s four questions illustrate that children should be engaged enough to
become curious and ask questions.

LAFTY REPORT
We had so much fun last month planning and putting on the Purim Carnival. It was a huge
success! Thank you to all of LaFTY and the eighth graders for your hard work. Thank you also to
the parents who helped and to everyone who attended the Carnival. On March 23-25 we attended Spring Conclave in
New Orleans, where we experienced Judaism through our senses. It was a lot of fun.
