! FAT QUARTER NEWS ! QUILTS BY THE SEA 2011 QUILT SHOW CATEGORIES ! The Quilt Show will have ONE new category for 2011. To encourage our youth to start quilting we have added the Mentored Youth group. A member must have helped the 18 and under youth to piece and/or quilt the quilt. It can be of any size and ! the member will fill out the entry form for the youth. The quilts will receive st nd rd participation ribbons and 1 , 2 , 3 place ribbons to encourage the art of quilting. The rest of the categories will remain the same. Each member will have to choose which category best fits their quilt. The hanging committee may decide to combine categories if needed. Here is a list of the categories: VOLUME XXIIII, Issue 4 May 2011 Medium Quilts, assembled by exhibitor, quilted by a professional or other second party 150-274” outside dimension. Pieced - predominant construction technique Appliqué - predominant construction technique Small Quilts, assembled by exhibitor, quilted by exhibitor or professional, less than 150” outside dimension. Pieced - predominant construction technique Appliqué - predominant construction technique Hand Quilted – Pieced and/or appliqué Group Quilts assembled or quilted by 3 or more people, such as block exchange quilts, group hand quilted quilts (Bayshore, Knotty Ladies, etc.). Miniature Quilts, NOT just a small quilt, but a miniature version of a larger quilt. If blocks are used, they must not be larger than 4”. Not to exceed 120” outside dimension. Large Quilts, assembled and quilted by exhibitor, (non-professional), 275” and larger outside dimension. Choose one category. Her trunk show of art quilts will walk us through the evolution of creating a work of art from fabric. Phyllis has had her works shown at major quilt shows throughout the US, including Paducah, KY. She has been teaching her methods for many years in the Eugene area. Phyllis has developed some interesting ways to create illusions that are her very own. Come to the meeting for her fun and inspiring program and then take her class on Friday. You’ll be working outside the box and exercising your creative muscles. Her workshop on Friday will include a kit of materials that you will need to make your project; the cost of the kit is included in the price for the workshop. Phyllis is preparing the kits now so don't postpone signing up this month. It’s time to play with crayons and fabric!! Our workshop for May will feature Terrie Kyger and her coloring techniques on fabric. Terrie will soon have her first book published by Martingale, and is coming to present her workshop on the Melt-N-Blend method of coloring with crayons. A full kit is included in the cost of the workshop, $58. The workshop will be held at Atonement Lutheran Church on Saturday, May 14, 9:30 - 4:30 pm. Come join us and play a little!!! The quilt show is fast approaching and a lot of projects and boutique items are being completed. PLEASE BE SURE TO CHECK THE COPYRIGHT INFORMATION on patterns before entering or selling items in the show. The Special Awards will be similar with couple additions: Best of Show- Quilt chosen from all the 1st place winners. The judging will be done before the set-up day this year to solve the stress and problem with finishing on time. The location will be determined soon and the day will probably rd be Wed, Aug 3 . We will be using experienced sewing and quilting volunteers with our guidelines similar to previous years. Members will continue to drop off quilts to the depots and pick up from depots like usual. Please stop by the Quilt Show table at the next meeting (or contact Jane Szabo) to get the new rack cards and flyers for distribution. Most stores love our professional flyers and are happy to display them. Let’s make our 21st quilt show one of the best, with lots of beautiful quilts and lots of member participation. Jane, Virginia, and Yvonne QUILT SHOW HELP WANTED: We still need some help in a few areas. 1. Distribute flyers right before the Quilt Show to hotels, restaurants, tourist spots. Exciting New Quilt Show Sponsored Ribbons! This year the Quilt Show Co-chairs are encouraging members and others to sponsor their "own special award" at the Quilt Show. These Sponsored Ribbons will be in addition to our regular categories. Members and non-members can create their own category or theme award and then choose the quilt that wins this award (not your own or a family member). The cost to create an award is $10 for members and $15 for nonmembers, which includes one day of admission to our 2011 Quilts by the Sea. The sponsors will select their winner after the hanging on Thurs, Aug 4, or Friday, Aug 5th, 9 am till 12pm. Some ideas for categories are, Best Children's Quilt, Best Patriotic, Best Use of Batik, Best Use of Red, Pure Joy, Best Border, So far we have these awards: Twinkle, You Made Me Say WOW, “A Look Back”, 30’s fabric. The deadline for these awards will be the June meeting so we will have time to prepare your special award ribbon. Let's make this a really fun addition at our show. SMALL QUILT AUCTION FOR THE 2011 QUILT SHOW We are once again asking for small quilts donation by OCQG members for the fundraiser silent auction at our Quilt Show. Half of the proceeds will go to the charity that we’ll choose in a special drawing and half will go to our guild. We want quilts that represent your very best work so that bidders will say, “I want that quilt!” The quilts must have a total perimeter of no more than 120 inches. They can be any style, embellished or not, hand or machine quilted (no tied quilts). You must put on a hanging sleeve and label. The turn in date for the quilts is the JULY meeting. Any questions please contact Karen Oetjen or Paulette Stenberg. 2. Make some inside signs for the Quilt Show for new categories and directing people to back gym,etc. 3. Plan and set up OCQG table and display for the Show which would include community quilts, workshops, activities, and membership. Other volunteers will man this at the Show. 4. Helping to make more wood bases for the hanging poles. This is probably our husbands or sons, HELP please!! Many hands make light work. Please contact Jane Szabo to help. QUILT SHOW GRAB BAGS There will be a box at the meetings from now till the quilt show to collect any small items for the quilt show grab bags. Please check your closets and bring items that are lying around that are no longer needed. OCQG MERCHANDISE CHALLENGE QUILT TURN IN INSTRUCTIONS All new guild merchandise is available at every general meeting. A new specialty item is a fleece jacket in a variety of colors with the ship embroidered on the left crest. The jackets are $40-$45 and can be preordered through June. ...Please tell us by the May Guild meeting, May 12, 2011, that you will be entering your quilt in the challenge. It would be best to e-mail or call (Kathy or Sarah) - there will be a list at the May meeting, but we still would prefer an e-mail or phone call. ...Add the 4" hanging sleeve - directions are on the guild’s web site. ...Fill out the quilt show insurance waiver form. Add "2011 Perfect Block Challenge" after your quilt name on the label and receipt form. Attach the label to the back of your quilt as per the entry instructions. Besides the paper label, it’s a good idea to have your name on a separate label that you sew onto your quilt back. Do not put your name on the front of the quilt! ...Attach a 3X5 card with your quilt name and/or block name to the front. ...Bring your quilt to the June Guild meeting in a plain bag. Also include in the bag 3 separate 2"X6" strips of fabric you have used in your quilt. If you are unable to attend the June meeting, please make arrangements to have someone else bring it for you or call us to make arrangements. I will sign your receipt when you turn in your quilt - and you will need to show the receipt when you pick up your quilt after the show. ...The quilts will be judged at both the June and July meetings by members of the Guild. Gales Creek Camp Raffle For kids with type 1 diabetes. Each raffle ticket is $5. A $25 donation is greatly appreciated. Raffle tickets will be sold at the May luncheon and winners chosen during the May potluck. Prizes include fabric, gift cards, machine quilting certificates, and much more. 100% tax deductible ~Jennifer Reinhart LIBRARY CORNER A guild member suggested we purchase the book Mystery Quilts by Rita Fishel, and we did. It features instructions for 15 quilts in the format of mystery quilts: the first half of the book explains the basic fabric requirements and color/value needs and clues for each quilt. The second half features further fabric and batting needs and pictures a completed version of each quilt. Anne Hendrickson Pat Laub HOBO QUILTS by Debra G. Henninger This is a great fun book that brings back many memories for me. Did you ever see marks on your grandparent’s house or fence? My grandparents lived in-between 3 sets of railroad tracks. I did see the markings on the fence, and waved to many hobos as they went by on the trains. When I first saw this book, I was excited to see that someone had written this history down. In this book, you see the secret language of the hobos made into a quilt. Anne and I thought that this would be a great book for our library; we love the history. President Jackie Stankey called the meeting to order at 6:30. Quilt Show flyers and posters are available for distribution to area quilt shops and businesses. A variety of volunteer posts are available. Sponsored ribbon awards are available for $10 each. A new award category has been added “Mentored Youth” for quilters 18 & younger mentored by a guild member. Merchandising “Quilt Shop Navigator” books featuring our 2011 raffle quilt on the cover is available for $7. Jen Reinhart is holding a fundraiser raffle for Gale’s Creek Camp with many quilt-related prizes. Space is still available for the September 18-21 quilting retreat. Quilt Fest in Toledo will be May 7th and Monica Lyons requests quilts for display at various locations around town. Our Documentation group is participating. Open House – Jean Amundson reported that we had 63 non-member attendees, of which 2 joined the Guild as new members. We netted over $300 for the event. Roundabouts Program focused on four types of embellishment: Piping demonstrated by Laura Martin, Beading by Heidi Ware, Circles by Helena Roberts and Embroidery by Toni Brodie. Drawings for various raffle and participant programs were held with the respective prizes awarded. The Show and Share session followed. Upcoming programs and workshops were announced. Members are encouraged to check the newsletter for dates and topics. The meeting was adjourned at 8:55. Travel Reimbursement Policy – Jen Reinhart requested reimbursement for her travel costs to venues on behalf of the guild to the Portland and Coburg shows. The Board formalized a new policy. Travel further than a fifty-mile radius from the member’s home on Board approved Committee or Guild business will be reimbursed at the then current Federal Government rate per mile. The funds will be drawn from the Committee budget incurring the expense. Increase Guild Portion of boutique sales from 10% to 13% to better offset the increased bank fees/charges for credit card acceptance at events. A notable portion of boutique sales at Open House and Quilt Show are by credit card. Cautionary wording regarding the use of copyrighted patterns for making multiple items for the boutique will be added to our quilt show entry forms. Committees reporting included: Finance – Members are reminded to turn in funds and any unsold raffle tickets in a prompt manner. Merchandising –The Board approved the donation of a logo project bag for the silent auction at the Coburg Show in recognition of their low vendor fees. Programs – Planning is in progress for 2012 presenters. Both Linda Ballard and Nancy Chung have signed contracts with us. Retreat – Openings are available for this fall’s retreat and payment plans are available. The meeting was adjourned at 11:40. Respectfully submitted, Becky Mershon, Secretary Minutes of Executive Board Meeting April 21, 2011 GUILD RETREAT 2011 THE RESORT AT THE MOUNTAIN IN WELCHES, OR President Jackie Stankey called the meeting to order at 10:00. Present at the meeting were 17 members making a quorum. The February minutes printed in the newsletter were accepted as amended. The Treasurer’s report was accepted as clarified. September 18-21, 2011 Old Business Audit – Karen Donobedian drafted a brief write-up on the financial responsibility of a committee chairperson. After amendment, the information will be provided to all chairs and placed in each committee’s binder. Tax-exempt status (C7) with the IRS was applied for and not yet finalized. Need an update from Finance at next meeting. New Business Financial Outreach - Funds available after the annual budget is closed will be donated to worthy causes beyond our annually scheduled donations. We have $760 available. Membership will be asked to endorse giving $50 to Pacific NW Quilters Assn, $200 to Latimer Textile Museum and $100 to Coffee Creek Prison quilters’ group. The balance Hold your spot with a deposit of $75! Prices vary depending on how many people stay in a room: $375-$305 per person - This is a great deal for just about $100 per day you get everything provided to you! INSTALLMENT PAYMENTS ARE ACCEPTED This is a beautiful resort located at the base of Mt. Hood. Come join us for three full days of quilting and camaraderie. There will be games and activities and plenty of time to either sit by the pool or take a nature walk! Do you have a friend who is not a guild member but loves quilting as much as you? No problem! Japanese-Style Party Mix (courtesy of Judy McCoy) Adapted from “Steve’s Often Copied, Never-Duplicated, Furikake Chex Mix” http://www.food.com/recipe/steves-often-copied-never-duplicatedfurikake-chex-mix-360282 This is a sweet and savory variation of a very rich party mix. The added Japanese flavors are soy sauce, Japanese rice crackers, and furikake. Furikake is a dry mixture of various ingredients usually sprinkled over hot rice or used to embellish dishes such as seared ahi tuna or sushi. The variation of furikake used in this recipe is “nori komi,” roughly translated as “seaweed taste.” Ingredients of nori komi furikake include toasted white and/or black sesame seeds, black and green laver seaweed, sugar, and salt. Japanese rice crackers are made with mochi (pounded glutinous rice), usually flavored with soy sauce, and also called “arare” (hailstones) or “kaki mochi” (fried glutinous rice) and come in different shapes and sizes. Arare is usually roasted, not fried. You can buy furikake and arare from Asian grocery stores such as Mai’s in Newport or Rice n Spice in Corvallis. 2 cups Rice Chex 2 cups Wheat Chex 2 cups Corn Chex 2 cups Honeycomb cereal (optional, though recommended) 2 cups pretzel sticks 2 cups dry roasted peanuts 2 cups arare (see note above) 1 cup butter 3/4 cup sugar 3/4 cup light corn syrup 2! tablespoons soy sauce (Kikkoman is recommended as it has a richer flavor) ! cup vegetable oil (Steve’s recipe listed " cup, but I reduced this) 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 10 drops Tabasco sauce 2 (2-ounce) bottles Nori Komi Furikake (see note above) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F. Mix together all the cereals, pretzels, and peanuts in a large baking pan (The tin foil ones that you can buy from the store to roast turkey works really well!). Divide the mixture evenly between two pans. In a medium-sized saucepan, melt butter. Add corn syrup, soy sauce, oil, Worcestershire sauce, and Tabasco Sauce. Stir until sugar is dissolved and everything is blended well Pour over cereal mixture, one pan at a time, and mix well. Put into the oven. After 10 minutes, remove from oven, and add one bottle of furikake to each pan. Mix around to evenly distribute furikake and sauce from the bottom. Continue baking for about 1 to 2 hours, stirring every 10 to 15 minutes. The cooking time fluctuates depending on how crispy you want it, and how humid it is (making this in 90% humidity is a nightmare!). Cool, then break apart if necessary. (The mix should fall apart easily, otherwise roast in oven a few more minutes.) Store in an airtight container. NOTE You can substitute other types of cereal for any of the Chex cereals, as long as the amounts are equivalent. For example, you can use Crispix instead of rice, wheat, or corn Chex. You can also add things such as goldfish crackers in place of the cereal or arare, although the arare has a unique flavor. If you use bagged instead of bottled furikake, use ! cup to 1 cup of it, adjusting to taste. COMMUNITY QUILTS With everyone’s help Community Quilts donated 25 quilts to the Olalla Center in Toledo. The children were delighted to have quilts to snuggle with while at the center. Community Service donated 60 pillows to the Newport hospital. A few of the donated pillows are sold in the Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital gift shop. The hospital auxiliary uses profits from gift shop sales to fund various programs, buy equipment for the hospital, and to fund scholarships. The majority of donated pillows are given for patients to use after surgery and to make patients more comfortable during their stay. Thanks to everyone who helped make pillows! Community Service meets every Tuesday at Wilma’s studio (834 SW 13th St. Newport) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This month we will be tying quilts on the first Thursday in May at Quilter Cottage (355 N. Main St., Toledo) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Join us sometime…we have lots of fun visiting and laughing while we work on quilts. All skill levels are welcome. We received very nice thank you notes from various groups and individuals such as Sylvia Smith, Lincoln County Children’s Advocacy Center for the quilts donated with a special thank you to Toni Brodie for making the quilt and Jennifer Reinhart for machine quilting the quilt donated to the center to use as in a raffle later this year, and Lincoln County Foster Parents Association.
